From the Rector’s Desk From the Rector’s Desk From the Rector’s Desk From the Rector’s Desk It’s hard to believe that by the time you get this we’ll almost be into the month of June. We have just switched the

church from heating to cooling! The last few months seem to have gone by quickly, but now summertime is upon us.

We are in search for people to fill two very large vacancies. Jeff Fazio, our beloved “Rex Festivus” or “King of all Festi-

vals,” is hanging up his apron. He has served as chair of the Hospitality/Fellowship Committee and has done very

well. A quote from St. Peter’s Commissions descriptions will tell you what they do: “This group is dedicated to plan-

ning and staffing our times of fellowship and celebration. Organizing coffee hours, lemonade Sundays. Maintains

kitchen inventory and supplies. Publicity and food planning for special events such as Wedding Reenactment, Garden

Tour, Progressive Dinner, Harvest Feast, Sweetheart Banquet, Stewardship and Annual meeting luncheons and oth-

ers.” It’s a large group of folks who now find themselves in need of leadership. Might you be the one?

Nancy Goodman is laying down her pen as facilitator of the Pastoral Care Commission. Here’s what that Commission

does: “This ministry will provide pastoral care to parishioners in need at St. Peter’s. St. Peter’s members experiencing

short-term needs, such as cooking meals, running errands, hospital visitations, emergency babysitting and transporta-

tion to medical appointments, even visits to shut-ins.” There are also four sub-groups:

1. Funeral Assistance - This group will be responsible for assisting families with coffee or receptions in the Parish

House in the event of a funeral. Coordinate with [Building and Grounds] for parking shepherds and other support.

2. College Students - Also a part of this ministry will be regular correspondence to St. Peter’s college students with

special notes, cards and packages, keeping up with their addresses and up date with events happening at St. Pe-

ter’s. When students are home for vacations, extend special invitations of any special events or functions so that

they may attend. Jessica Evelyn continues to carry out this ministry.

3. Christmas Baskets for Shut-ins - Baskets are filled with goodies for St. Peter’s shut-ins who are unable to get out.

Items such as stamps, note cards, fresh baked goodies, a FORWARD DAY BY DAY booklet of daily readings and other

donated items are collected and delivered to the individuals prior to Christmas.

4. Birthday & Special Occasion Cards - Cards are sent to those celebrating birthdays and special occasions (e.g., anni-

versaries, births, or graduation).

Another group in need of leadership. Might you be the one?

Our one-service-at-ten-o’clock summer Sunday worship schedule begins May 26, Memorial Day weekend. This year it

will run through September 22, which will also be Restoration Sunday. The third Sunday in September (the 15th this

year) is traditionally Restoration Sunday, but it’s also the date of the Bishop’s visit, so the Restoration Committee has

graciously offered to move Restoration Sunday to the following Sunday, September 22. One odd thing this year is that

the Bishop’s visitation will be an afternoon visitation, not a morning visitation. You’ll hear more about this later.

It has been two years since I joined the Vestry. Time has flown by for several reasons, with the failure of the HVAC system near the top of the list. At my first Vestry Retreat, in February 2011, I was selected to take over the commission of Buildings and Grounds. In March, the oil-fired boiler failed and the renovation process began. The extensive project was headed by Ken Rubert and our then Senior Warden, Bill Lindsey. After several months, the church had a new energy efficient two-LP-boiler system with all new piping.

Two years later, one of our boilers wanted to make sure it had not been forgotten. An internal leak devel-oped in the #2 boiler. Many folks may not have known of the failure because of the design of the new system. We have a two-boiler system, in which they share the load most of the time. When a problem arises, one boiler can run the entire system; however, it is not as efficient when running on just one boiler. Ken is facilitating the warranty process and a new re-placement boiler should be installed this summer.

St. Peter’s boiler system design seems to reflect the dynamics of our church. The truth is that be it the Vestry, Altar Guild, Youth Mission Trip, or any other group within the church, we do not have to share the load to get things done. However, the most effective and efficient way to do so is by relying on others and working together.

Bear ye one another's burdens,

and so fulfill the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:2

Faithfully yours,

Tony Wood Senior Warden

Church School News

Many thanks to those who supported the 2013 Lenten Project, "Nets for Life." With your help, we were able to raise over $1,000 to help purchase treated nets to aid in preventing malaria! The children worked very hard during Lent preparing crafts for our sale! As always, we had some great items. Thanks also to those who contributed a baked item for this sale. I now have a nice walkway of stepping stones to mark the many years we have been doing them as a Lenten Project. How time flies!

As we wind down another year of Church School, I must thank the dedication of the following people who have given of their time to work with our chil-dren: Karen Moore, David and Kristin Swynford, Thomas and Carrie Evelyn, Kim and Steve von Hi-tritz, and Bill Lindsey. I would especially like to thank Steve von Hitritz for the many years he has worked with our high school students. Steve will as-sist the adult class next year!

I hope you will all join us Sunday, June 2, as we honor St. Peter’s graduates! This is a wonderful cele-bration as we hear from our graduating seniors. This year we will be treated with special homilies from both Kelly Gellings and Ashley Pierce. Please come and support our youth!

Have a restful summer and we will look forward to seeing you in Church School next year!

VBS 2013 - Kingdom Rock

Don’t forget VBS is going to be held July 29

through August 2, from 9 am to 12 noon. We are

gearing up for a wonderful week where we will

Stand Strong for God with our Kingdom Rock

theme! VBS is a week where children participate in

many activities like crafts, games, snacks, movie

time, and of course Bible studies. This is open to

all children from rising pre-schoolers to children

preparing to enter 6th grade. Older children are

encouraged to help out by volunteering as much

as they can!

Once again this year, we are participating in the

Operation Kid to Kid program which ties in with

our VBS materials. We will be sending GOD’S LOVE

FOR YOU booklets to children in India who are at

risk for being trafficked, maimed, or otherwise

abused. Our children will be learning about the

geography of where India is in relation to us, how

they live everyday, and what we can do to help

them learn about God’s love. In addition to fund-

ing the booklets, half of the proceeds raised during

the week will be going to Matthew’s Haven to pur-

chase supplies for their Back to School Fair.

A sign-up sheet and VBS registration forms will

be available in the Parish House foyer very soon.

Please prayerfully consider how you could best

volunteer your services this year! We have several

positions that still need to be filled. If you have

any questions or if you would like to volunteer,

please contact Stacey Wood by phone at 804-932-

9516 or by e-mail at [email protected].

~ Stacey Wood, VBS Director

Matthew’s Haven

Matthew’s Haven Denim & Diamonds “Chair”-ity Auction will be held at Royal New Kent Golf Club on Saturday, June 8, starting at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $27 and they are available from Catherine Pierce, Ann Bradshaw, Joyce Peterson, Sue Sitterson, Martha Danielson, Marianne Powell, and Joyce Molina or online at www.matthewshaven.com.

Admission includes hors d’oeuvres, beverage tickets, and the opportunity to bid on more than 50 fabulous items of all sizes and values. A sample of auction items includes 15 themed chairs, artwork from local artists and craftsmen, golf packages, an airplane ride, and a chance to bid on the use of a pontoon party boat at River’s Rest Marina, along with dinner. Please encourage your friends and neighbors to join us and help Mat-thew’s Haven continue its work to help change the lives of local children in need.

Our volunteers have worked very hard and spent much time and effort into achieving donations, advertising, ticket sales, as well as other tasks. We are positive this event will be an exciting evening!

A huge thank you to Joyce Molina, Joyce Peterson, Ann Bradshaw, Sue Sitterson, Martha Danielson, Carolie Kay, and last but not least, Mark Whidden.

Matthew’s Haven continues to grow and evolve. In addition to all of our regular annual programs, we have recently added a few more services to assist the needs of our clients. We are pleased to announce that we have added Books for Babies, an early literacy program for infants. In cooperation with Heritage Public Library and Healthy Families, Matthew’s Haven will provide a kit which includes a hard board book, bib, and information for parents on how to interact with babies to in-

troduce literacy. Upon bringing the appropriate information to the library, they will issue the child’s first li-brary card. Heritage Public Library has agreed to introduce this program to parents and their babies during their summer reading program. It will kick off the week of June 17. A Story Time specifically designed for babies and their parents will be held prior to the regular story time program on Fridays during the summer. This program is designed for any baby and family and does not specifically need to be for an at-risk child or child in need; however, this will be our focus. If you know of someone who may be interested in this fun kit, please have them contact Matthew’s Haven and we will be happy to provide them free of charge.

In addition to the Books for Babies program, we have developed Baby Bundles. These bundles include many layette items as well as diapers, toiletries, etc., all designed for newborns. These bundles are purposely planned to suit a baby boy or girl. So when there is a need to provide these items for a newborn, they are ready to go, all packed together in a small laundry basket with a blue or pink ribbon. Stop by the Matthew’s Haven room and see our current Baby Bundles! (Thank you, Carolie Kay.) We will gladly accept donations for this project: size 1 diapers, wipes, small/trial size powder, shampoo, baby wash kits, onesies, bath towels, crib or bassinette sheets, and more. Remember, any contribution to Matthew’s Haven is tax deductible and a re-ceipt will be provided upon request.

Please stay tuned for future announcements regarding Matthew’s Haven as we will be sharing even more ex-citing news soon!

12th Annual St. Peter’s Golf Tournament

Our 12th Annual Golf Tournament was not only successful but we all had a fabulous time! And the weather was absolutely perfect! We raised over $12,000 for youth mission and outreach pro-jects such as Habitat for Humanity and Matthew’s Haven--a special 12th Annual indeed!

The winning team was Team Files (Alan Files, Cam Frostick, Scott Pearson, TJ Pearson). Team Files scored a 13 under par 59 to win the tournament. Congratulations Team Files! Robert Hatley made a hole-in-one on hole #17 and won the cash prize of $168. Clayton Evelyn was our youngest golfer ever to participate. And Paul Rowles’ team, Mulligan Four, did NOT come in last place!

Support for our tournament was outstanding from our five main sponsors, 55 hole sponsors, team sponsors, prize contributors, golfers, and volunteers. Our five main sponsors were Willie & Deb Downs, CRH Catering, Evelyn Logging, Say Cheeez! Photography, and Charles City Timber & Mat. Without our main sponsors, we wouldn’t be able to make such a significant contribution towards our mission/outreach projects.

Thank you to all of our volunteers who remained enthusiastic and positive, which made the tournament so en-joyable! Three volunteers served as terrific beverage cart “ladies”: Catherine Pierce, Stacey Wood, and David Swynford who preferred the name, “Cart Bartender” over “Cart Lady.” Kathy Lindsey and Cynthia Rowles worked the Power Ball Hole #15 and raised a sizeable amount of money for our great causes. Julie Vaisvil helped register all of the golfers. Austin Pierce stayed all day and performed any task asked of him. Brian and Jon Gellings placed the 55 hole sponsor signs around the course. Wil Miles and Jon Gellings donated their time since they were home from college. Kelly Gellings came early to assist with the preparation of our dinner. And, of course, Ann Bradshaw was busy taking photos of all the teams during the tournament. Thanks, everyone!!

Thank you to the Peterson Girls (Joyce and Patty) for organizing the dinner with Nancy Goodman’s guidance. Special thanks to Charles Evelyn for donating the barbeque and thank you to Catherine Stanley for making the baked beans. Also, thanks to our dessert makers: Evelyn Waring, Julie Vaisvil, Ann Bradshaw, Kathy Lindsey, Cynthia Rowles, Sandra Gellings, Debbie Gentry, Lisa Lumpkin, Kim von Hitritz, Kim McLean, Traci Carlson, Shirley Meyer, Mava Miles, and Emily Clay Evelyn. Special thanks to the Youth Mission Trip team, headed by Adriane Marshall, for helping with the dinner and serving, and to Torun Carlson and Austin Pierce for recording the team scores.

I can’t say thank you enough to the ladies on the 12th Annual Committee who made all of this happen. Kristin Swynford gave so much of her time and effort in securing prizes for our tournament. She goes to great lengths to get the best prizes for our tournament! Patty Peterson and Traci Carlson brought in 55 hole sponsors – our most ever! And, a big thank you to our newest member, Joyce Peterson, who hooked up with Patty Peterson to provide another yummy dinner!

Annual Parish Picnic – August 4

Annie and Boogie Davis, along with their families, have once again invited St. Peter’s to their beautiful Pamunkey River home for the Annual Parish Picnic on Sunday, August 4.

The service of Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 11 am, with a shared lunch and afternoon of fun fellow-ship to follow. Everyone is asked to bring one or two dishes to share, and blankets or chairs. Plates and utensils, tea and lemonade, ice, and fried chicken will be provided.

Please bring swimsuits, sun screen, towels, and water toys. Boats and kayaks are welcome as well. Life pre-servers are recommended. You may want to bring coolers with ice for food left over from lunch—in case you want to stay long enough to eat again!

As a reminder, EVERYONE’S help is needed to take down tables, to clear trash, and other clean-up details following the day’s activities. Helping with clean-up

is a great way to say thank you to the Davis family

for their very generous hospitality.

Directions to the Davis Farm will be available in the Parish House foyer. Please call the church office or Kristin Swynford (557-3533) if you have any ques-tions. In the event of inclement weather, there will be a message on the church voice mail.

Travel by car or boat and enjoy worship and a won-derful day on the beautiful Pamunkey!
