Opening sequence creativityMax Dandy 12S

The moment I saw these thumbnails on http://www.artofthetitle.com/, I knew I would enjoy the opening sequence. This is due to the colours used and the design of the illustration. The illustration is designed in a very basic yet interesting way. It conveys messages to the audience with out being to complex. The army style colours relate heavily on the themes of the clip. These are war, violence and general conflict.

As soon as the Universal declaration begins to play, a light brown filter is edited on top of the clip. This sticks throughout. I found this interesting, as the filters are normally put on when the official film begins. But in this instance, it is placed on earlier. It caught my eye as the colours used on this Universal advertisement are usually brighter.

The next aspect of the clip that I found creative was that this timeline format has been used. This allows the audience to gain knowledge of the era it was set and may also convey the message that the audience will be moving in time.

The illustration of the people riding horses pans in and then a graphic match is used to create a transition to this video of men riding horses to the left of this information.

An image of some Arab men has been used very creatively to construct the typography used in the Film name, The Kingdom. Furthermore, this allows a swift transition to occur between each shot. Although the opening sequences is a combination of real footage, images and graphical computer illustration, different shot types are still involved.

My favourite aspect of the entire opening sequence is this use of facts conveyed through the use of graphic computerised illustration. It creates realism and gives the sequence a contempary style. Also, in the word oil the I has been replaced by a leaking oil mine. This is called typography replacement., because the words have been replaced by symbols or images that allow the word to still be read but contextually fit in and make sense. I generally like this basic, stencil themed graphic design as it is very effective, simplistic and generic.

This timeline/diagram shaped design work is shown continuously throughout the sequence. This is creative as it may link to the military aspects shown throughout in the way that military operations are well planned out and simple, as is this shot. In addition, the colours used are very successful and creative as, especially in this shot, are not block colours, they are more textual and interesting.

I also find the fact that the designers behind this opening sequence thought it would be effective to create computerised illustration of the images, In this case of Osama Bin laden. This may be due to the fact they dont want to be conformist and would like to create something new and interesting. To add, the high central background of the image uses various rough layers to create a complex concoction of textures. This is very effective.
