The Kingdom of Protista

Scott MayerMarch 28, 2010Biology Period 6

What is a Protist?• Protist-Eukaryotes

that are not members of the kingdoms plantae, animalia, or fungi.

• A protist is any organism that is not a plant, animal, or prokaryote.

• Most protists are unicellular, but few have hundreds or even thousands of cells.

Evolution of Protists

• Protists were the first eukaryotic organisms on earth which first started appearing 1.5 billion years ago.

• Some organelles in eukaryotic cells were once symbiotic prokaryotes that lived inside other cells.

Types of Protists• Animal-like:

assembles cytoplasm to help wrap around prey

• Fungus-like: contains hyphae to look like fungi, also acts as decomposers by releasing enzymes.

• Plant-like: They can make their own food (autotrophs)

Protist Classification

• Biologists have called protists the most diverse organism on the planet.

• Protists either obtain food from the sun (photosynthesis), or from external digestion (decomposers).
