A new piano on the Black Watch for Kirker Music Festivals at Sea

This year we have invested in a fine new piano for our Music Festivals on board Black Watch. We asked piano dealer Andrew Giller to search out a new piano for us and at an auction early in 2016 he did just that. Our Yamaha boudoir grand will grace the stage in the Marina Theatre where our private concerts are held. The piano was made in the Yamaha Hamanatsu factory and is described by Andrew as “having an unusually warm and rich tone and a highly responsive action.” The pianist always has the lion share of the musical programme on board, so we know they will all be even more keen to join one of our Music Cruises in the future. The piano will be tuned at every major port throughout the cruise to keep it in tip top condition for the duration of the holiday.

KIRKER MUSIC FESTIVALS AT SEA2017

Welcome to the 2017 Kirker Music Festivals at Sea brochure. We look forward to welcoming both new and regular travellers on board Fred. Olsen’s Black Watch. Each Music Cruise itinerary combines a voyage to fascinating ports with a series of exclusive on-board concerts, talks and shore excursions planned by Kirker’s Director of Music, renowned violist and composer Simon Rowland-Jones and Barry Cheeseman, our Cultural Tours Senior Executive.Black Watch is a traditional ship with a distinctive British character, an intimate atmosphere and excellent on-board service. It is also blessed with a charming theatre which has an excellent natural acoustic for chamber music, and forms the social and cultural hub of our Music Cruises. This year we have also invested in a new grand piano for the theatre, which will form the centrepiece of many of the concerts. The internationally-acclaimed musicians have been selected from a mixture of old friends who have performed at Kirker Music Festivals before, and new artists. Not only are they invited for their exceptional musicianship, but they must also be sociable – as one of the greatest attractions of these cruises is the opportunity for clients to meet the musicians informally at dinner or in between concerts and spend time talking to them before and after performances. The musicians themselves enjoy playing to the same audience over several evenings, creating a rapport which you do not get from individual concerts, and passengers appreciate the fact that the concert hall is never far from their cabin or the bar. As one of them once memorably said - “The thing I have enjoyed so much about this cruise is that the music has come to us.”For 2017 we will be embarking on three sailings, two from Dover – to Norway for midsummers, and then to the spectacular lochs and islands of Scotland – and one from the port of Rosyth near Edinburgh, travelling through the Baltic to St Petersburg. Norway is the perfect destination to visit by ship, and we will be joined in the fjords by the Doric String Quartet and young Scottish pianist Alasdair Beatson. On our return to Dover we shall set sail the same day for our second cruise, which travels around Britain exploring the lochs and isles of Scotland. Soprano Lisa Milne and selected members of Ensemble 360 will perform – and for those who cannot decide between the two, why not stay on board for both cruises in succession? We will cover the cost of your car parking or a return train ticket from your local station if you join us for both cruises. The third Music Festival at Sea will be our first to set sail from Scotland and includes stops in three of the great Baltic cities: Helsinki, Tallinn and majestic St Petersburg. We are joined on board by a host of musicians including the Carducci Quartet who have received rapturous receptions at recent Kirker events, pianist Paul Janes, the Ferio Saxophone Quartet, and two singers: Joshua Ellicott, tenor and Monica-Evelin Liiv, mezzo-soprano, who will be looking forward to a return to her native Estonia. Please call 020 7593 2284 to speak to a Music Cruise expert.

THE FJORDS OF NORWAYA SEVEN NIGHT HOLIDAY | 4 JUNE 2017

Dover – Eidfjord – Hardangerford – Flåm – Aurlandsfjord – Bergen – Dover

THE ITINERARYTraversing the North Sea from Dover to Norway, our first landfall will be the stunning scenery of Lysefjord – a beautiful fjord which is accessible only to smaller ships such as ours. As we sail up the fjord we will approach the Pulpit Rock – a dramatic flat-topped cliff with a sheer drop of more than 600 metres down to the water below. Later that same day we will sail through the Kamsund Strait where just 175 metres separate Karmoy Island and Haugesund, a test of skill for the captain. Next we sail along two of Norway’s most famous fjords - Eidfjord and Hardangerfjord. Simon Rowland-Jones was so taken with the beauty of Eidfjord that he composed a piano trio named after it – which will be performed on board. Hardangerfjord also has a musical connection: this is where the fiddle of the same name – now the national instrument of Norway – first originated. The fjord is lined by glistening, vertiginous waterfalls, forbidding glaciers and towering mountains.Later we shall reach Flåm, a place of great rural charm where the landscape softens into verdant orchards and farmland. From here there is an opportunity to travel on the thrilling Flåm railway. Another dramatic and even narrower fjord at Naeroyfjord, top of the list in National Geographic’s list of national heritage sights, appears at first to be a dead-end: an image created by the twisting and turning of the fjord as it cuts inland. The cruise ends with a voyage back down the coastline towards Bergen, city of Grieg and Ole Bull – whose houses we will visit on an optional shore excursion exclusive to Kirker. Bergen is one of the most spectacularly situated cities in Europe with bays, fjords and mountains surrounding a charming waterfront of old wooden warehouses.

BergenOur excursion in Bergen will include visits to the homes of two great Norwegian musicians who both were born and died in the city - the composer Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) and the virtuoso violinist Ole Bull (1810 - 1880). We will visit the charming house at Troldhaugen where Grieg lived with his wife Nina and enjoy a piano recital of his music there. Later we will go to the delightful island of Lysoen where Ole Bull

built a flamboyant house overlooking the fjord. A curator at the house will give a talk on the violinist’s colourful and dramatic life. Lunch will be included.

Meet the ArtistsAlasdair Beatson, pianoThis young Scottish pianist is well established as one of the most thoughtful musicians of his generation, always pushing musical boundaries and never allowing himself to be categorised. This fresh approach to music-making is greatly

helped by the fact he works with an ever-changing group of musicians in his chamber music performances. He is busy both as a chamber musician and as a soloist and enjoys a special collaboration with The Scottish Ensemble and other groups and orchestras in his native Scotland. He appears at all the established UK Festivals, notably in Bath, Aldeburgh, Plush and North Norfolk. He has given six solo recitals at Wigmore Hall.

The Doric String QuartetAlex Redington & Jonathan Stone, violinsHelene Clement, viola John Myerscough, celloThe Doric String Quartet was introduced to Kirker audiences back in 2005. Since then they have performed on many of

our exclusive Festivals both on land and at sea. They memorably played Walton’s String Quartet at the Kirker Ischia Music Festival at La Mortella in Ischia with Susana Walton being visibly moved sitting in the front row.Today, they are amongst the most sought after quartets in the world playing at concert halls and in festivals around the world so it has been hugely rewarding for everyone at Kirker to witness their rise to stardom. They play at every major festival around the world, have a series of several concerts at Wigmore Hall each season and continue to add to their already extensive discography. They have performed at the North Norfolk Music Festival every summer since the first festival in 2005 and play regularly in the USA – on 27 February 2017 they make their debut at Carnegie Hall.

THE SCOTTISH ISLANDSA TEN NIGHT HOLIDAY | 11 JUNE 2017

Dover – Dublin – Loch Fyne – Fort William – Skye – Kirkwall – Invergordon – Dover

THE ITINERARYWaving farewell to the White Cliffs of Dover on board Black Watch we will look ahead to our 10 night cruise which will take us first to Dublin and then up the West Coast of Scotland, through the islands of the Inner Hebrides. Only when we reach Kirkwall in the Orkneys, do we turn south again, calling in at Invergordon before sailing down the east coast of England and back to Dover.A day in Dublin is guaranteed to get the cruise off to a lively start with so much to see and do. Choose between the National Gallery of Ireland, The Book of Kells at Trinity College, The Irish Museum of Modern Art at Kilmainham or go to the GPO on O’Connell Street to learn about the 1916 Easter Uprising, which took place here 100 years ago. Reaching Scotland we will cruise on Loch Fyne – famous for its oysters – and see the romantic ruins of Robert the Bruce’s 14th century castle. Catch a glimpse of Ben Nevis from the calm waters of Loch Linnhe and enjoy the spectacular natural setting of Fort William encircled by mountains. We sail past the eerily beautiful Fingal’s Cave: immortalised in music by Felix Mendelssohn who was captivated by it in 1829. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting the many sea birds, including majestic sea eagles, on the peaceful waters of the Firth of Lorn. Sailing past the seat of the Maclean clan, Duart Castle on the Isle of Mull, we reach the Small Isles, an archipelago in the

Inner Hebrides: the narrow Loch Hourn and Loch Nevis are reminiscent of the dramatic fjords of Norway. We stop at Portree on the lonely Trotternish peninsula on the Isle of Skye and later see the impressive landscapes of Lochs Torridon and Shieldaig. Cruising round the far north of Scotland we will reach Kirkwall with time to explore the Orkney Islands’ neolithic sites. Our last port will be Invergordon in the heart of the Highlands, a romantic land of legends and castles, including historic Cawdor and Dunrobin.

Optional Shore ExcursionsArranged exclusively for Kirker clients, further details and prices available late 2016.

DublinWe will visit two of Dublin’s most important cultural institutions – The National Gallery of Art and The Dublin Writers Museum. The third visit of this tour will be to the General Post Office where a new permanent exhibition to mark the centenary of the 1916 Easter Uprising was opened in 2016. These three visits will take you to the heart of Ireland’s cultural history and help visitors understand more

about the country’s growing desire for independence from

the British Crown in the 19th century and the subsequent development of one of the world’s most colourful and best-loved nations.

Isle of Skye Dunvegan Castle and lunch at the award-

winning Three Chimneys RestaurantTake a journey across the wild and haunting landscape of the Isle of Skye to The Three Chimneys Restaurant. Despite its remote location, such is the reputation of the restaurant that it is regularly included in the list of the world’s Top 50 Restaurants. This is a testament to the mantra of Eddie and Shirley Spears, the owners, that both front of house service and culinary genius are of equal importance. Chef Scott Davies will prepare a special seasonal menu using ingredients from the rich contents of Scotland’s natural larder to be served in the restaurant’s private dining room. Our excursion will also include a visit to Dunvegan Castle, the seat of Macleod of Macleod, Chief of the Macleod Clan and inhabited continuously for more than 800 years.

OrkneyOur day in Orkney will include a visit to St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall and a concert being given as part of the annual St Magnus Festival, which is held every June. Details of the concert will be available in the spring of 2017. The tour will also include a visit to the delightful town of Stromness. We’ll enjoy some of the most stunningly beautiful sea and landscapes in Europe on our drive.

General InformationThe ShipFred. Olsen’s ship Black Watch has a relaxed, stylish atmosphere that harks back to cruising in a bygone age. She is a world-class cruise ship where you will feel a warm sense of hospitality from the very first moment you step aboard, with broad teak decks, generous promenades, elegant décor and bright, spacious public areas. The cabins are a good size and most have a sea view (see cabin prices on page 14 for full details). With just 435 cabins, Black Watch has been designed with a generous amount of space for each passenger. On board it is always easy to find a quiet corner - and you certainly won’t find yourself having to compete for space with hordes of other passengers. There are a number of dining options ranging from the main Glentanar Restaurant to the more intimate Orchid Room, and the relaxed informality of the delightful Braemar Garden Café, or the Poolside Café or Marquee Pool Bar for a snack in the sun.All meals on the Black Watch are included (drinks payable on board). Kirker clients and artists will all dine together in a specially reserved area of the Glentanar Restaurant after each evening’s performance.Guests may choose from a selection of contrasting bars including the nautically-themed Lido Lounge and popular Scottish Piper’s Bar, or you may elect to retreat to your favourite corner in the Braemar Lounge or the Observatory. Other on board facilities include two swimming pools, a fitness centre, a health and beauty salon, deck sports, library, indoor games, internet access, casino, cabarets and shows.

DiningThe Kirker party, including the musicians, will dine at the second sitting each evening, which is scheduled to start at 20.30. We will be seated together on Kirker-designated tables in The Orchid Room and on tables close-by. Special arrangements have been made for our clients to be able to sit at different places within the designated dining area – this means that you may choose to dine with different people each evening if you wish. If you do not want to wait for the second sitting, you can dine in the Garden Café which will be open after the concerts finish. Seating here is usually unreserved but please note that on certain evenings when there is an Indian or Chinese buffet a table reservation is required – please see the Daily Bulletin on board for more information.

Shore ExcursionsIt may not be possible to reserve a place on our exclusive shore excursions after we have set sail so please call the Kirker office on 020 7593 2284 to make your reservations as soon as possible. If you wish to discuss our excursions on board, please speak to Barry Cheeseman – the Fred Olsen shore excursion desk does not handle these bookings. For your information, Fred Olsen will send you details of their shore excursions approximately four weeks prior to departure. These are available to all passengers, not just to Kirker guests. Should you wish to join any of the excursions offered by Fred Olsen, you must book these directly with them.

The MusicThe music programmes have been carefully created and arranged by violist and composer Simon Rowland-Jones in close association with the musicians and will be hosted by Barry Cheeseman of Kirker Holidays. After many years of experience we have learnt that on a music cruise our clients wish to discover new works as well as enjoy some familiar favourites. Getting the mix just right is an integral part of Simon Rowland-Jones’ work when planning the programme and we are confident that everyone will find something of interest in each of our concerts.Although the Black Watch carries between 700 and 800 passengers, the Kirker Music Festival’s private concerts are restricted to Kirker guests (we anticipate approximately 60-90 participants) and will be held in the Marina Theatre, ideal for listening to chamber music. Concerts will take place on most days of the cruise and will be complemented by a number of informative talks and interviews with the musicians, as well as a programme of shore excursions. In addition to the Kirker programme, two further concerts will be given in the Neptune Lounge for everyone on board to enjoy.

15% deposit due at time of booking; balances due 14 weeks prior to departurePrices for other cabins available on request

Our prices are per person and are based on specially reduced Fred. Olsen fares. Unlike many prices quoted for cruises, they will not be withdrawn from sale closer to the departure date, however the Kirker Music Cruise is restricted to a limited number of places, so we do recommend you book early to avoid disappointment - especially if you would like to book one of the top cabins as these tend to sell out first. Please telephone one of our expert cruise consultants if you would like to discuss your cabin requirements.Guests must be in possession of a valid passport with at least 6 months' validity remaining and be covered by travel insurance (please ask if you would like us to recommend a suitable insurance provider).

Prices include full music, concert and lecture programme and all meals on board.

Cruise Prices

The cancellation policy applying to our cruises is as follows: Cancellation up to 98 days before the departure of the cruise: loss of deposit. 98-57 days: 60% of the holiday cost. 56-21 days: 85% of the holiday cost.

Less than 21 days or failure to travel: 100% of the holiday cost.
