The NFL handed down suspen-sions yesterday to four New Orleans Saints players for their participation in the “bounty-gate” scandal where there was apparent bounties put on heads of players from opposing teams. The league has already sus-pended former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams indefinitely while suspending head coach Sean Payton for the entire 2012 season. Assis-tant coach Joe Vitt (six games) and GM Mickey Loomis (eight games) were also suspended. The actual players suspensions included former Saints An-thony Hargrove and Scott Fu-
jita received three games while current Saints defensive end Will Smith received four games and linebacker Jon Vilma was banned for the entire season after it was determined that he helped coordinate the program. Pittsburgh Steelers’ lineback-ers LaMarr Woodley and James Harrison have already chimed in on twitter expressing their disapproval with the most recent ruling. For the most part, I agree with Woodley and Harrison. Whether commissioner Roger Goodell likes it or not, profes-sional football is a violent game that takes a uniquely violent individual to play. I don’t see
how a few thousand dollars on “someone’s head” would mo-tivate a player (who is already making millions of dollars to begin with) to hit someone harder than he already would have without the bounty. NFL players are wired different than most and are taught to hit their opposition as hard as they can because they know the same is coming their way. What the Saints are really guilty of is making the NFL look barbaric and very few people take their PR as seriously as the NFL. Simple case of wrong place, wrong time.
