Winter 2018 Find us on Facebook and Twitter!
The Knight In Wonderland 2018 The Knight In Wonderland was a huge success this year!
Over 500 guests came to enjoy this elegant evening. It
was a record-breaking Knight, as we raised over
$325,000 for GICC! It was a great night for GICC and a
great night for the Grand Island Community.
The Alice In Wonderland theme
created a fun but elegant atmos-
phere for the evening with top-hat
cakes and black and white décor.
Co-chairs Jean Hamik and Kellie
Weyers did an amazing job of set-
ting the scene with attention to
every detail! The live auction
items this year ranged from trips,
to guns, to Mass with the Bishop!
Tom Noble (pictured with Mike Hamik and Tom Dinsdale) was the big win-
ner of the night when his ticket was drawn for the brand new 2018 Hyun-
dai Santa Fe AWD vehicle! Thanks to Tom & Kim Dinsdale, Dinsdale Au-
tomotive and Mike & Jean Hamik, U-Save Pharmacy for their generous do-
nation!
Thank you to all who at-
tended and/or donated to
this important event! We
are truly grateful for the
support of our GICC family
and the Grand Island Com-
munity! We are already gearing up for next year here in
the Foundation office!
We are excited to announce our chairs for next year, Greg
and Lisa Rerucha and Dr. Steve and Karla Schneider.

A Word From Dr. Hehnke
Grand Island Central Catholic students are very blessed to have supporters who have invested in the future of GICC students by establishing twelve scholarships to be awarded to graduating students. The GICC Foundation provides the op-portunity for students to have access to these funds through an application process which is communicated to Seniors in December with appli-cation deadlines of March 1. These scholarship funds are managed by the GICC Foundation with the goal to ensure that students have an opportunity to use these scholarships for their future endeavors. From an educator’s point of view, and from one who works to assist and guide students to be successful towards reaching the goals each has set after 13 years of education, there can be no greater gift given than the support for one’s future education. Establishing a scholarship for GICC students to achieve future educational goals leaves a legacy for those who are committed to GICC as well as strengthens the GICC community. The Pat Kayl Science Lab
This year our Fund an Item at The Knight was the renovation of the GICC science lab. Over $48,000 was
raised to help with the renovation. The main science classroom here at GICC is original to the school and
is in dire need of updating, not only to bring the classroom up to code but to advance our science curric-
ulum as well. With the planned changes, our science teachers will have the ability to give our students a
more hands-on approach to learning science, as well as a more
advanced science curriculum. This new science lab will be dedi-
cated to the memory of Mr. Pat Kayl, who served our science
department for over 30 years. He touched the lives of many of
our students and staff. We are sure that he would be humbled by
this honor. If you would like to donate to the Science lab in
memory of Pat Kayl, please contact the Development Foundation
office.
The current science classroom is shown here. With the help of
the Fund an Item donations, the original glass block windows will
be covered by drywall and painted over. Old cabinetry will be
refinished, repaired, and updated. New tabletops will be added
as well as a new floor and 3 new lab tables, new sinks, and a
safety eyewash and shower station.

You can shape Grand Island Central Catholic’s Future!
Your legacy support for Grand Island Central Catholic will make an impact to help shape the future of
GICC!
Consider including Grand Island Central Catholic in your will—perhaps as the recipient of a small per-
centage of your estate or of a stated dollar amount.
Or you might consider assigning GICC as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, a CD or a part of
your IRA.
Contact GICC Development Foundation for more details about planned giving.
All School Reunion and Hall of Fame
Come one… Come all… Come meet your friends and classmates.
The ALL SCHOOL CLASS REUNION will be held on July 27, 2019. The evening will begin with Mass, fol-
lowed by Social Hour and Dinner. During this event the new inductees to the Hall of Fame will be honored.
PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDAR TO SAVE THE DATE– AND NOTIFY ALL THE FELLOW CLASS-
MATES THAT YOU STAY IN TOUCH WITH. We hope to see you next summer!!!!
Now accepting Hall of Fame Nominations GICC is a special place. We have awesome supporters—special staff– and many successful alumni who
were greatly impacted by their experience at Central Catholic. Each year we traditionally honor several
nominees who exhibit the strong characteristics of a Crusader by inducting them into the Hall of Fame.
Is there someone you believe should be honored? Someone you would like to nominate? Perhaps this is
a fellow class member, or a staff member that made a real difference in your life. Please share your
thoughts and stories by nominating that special person.
The following guidelines should be used when you submit your nominations. The nominee should be any
one or more of the following:
An alumni (graduate) of Saint Mary’s High School or Central Catholic High School (Alumni Hall of Fame)
or a person that did not graduate from GICC but has positively impacted Grand Island Central Catholic
(Honorary Hall of Fame).
Hall of Fame candidates will be selected by a vote of the Alumni Committee. Individuals selected to the
Hall of Fame will be recognized with a photograph and biographical sketch.

The Our Faith Our Hope Our Future campaign has been a great success! We are
so blessed to have raised over $1.6 million!
The renovation will begin the day after school is dismissed and everyone at
Central Catholic is excited! Thank you to everyone that has volunteered and
supported the campaign. Campaign co-chair Kristen Maser summed it up per-
fectly, “We have been overwhelmed by the vast outpouring of support we have
received from not only the catholic community but the Grand Island community as a whole. We couldn’t be
happier with how this campaign has been received, and we look forward to announcing the status of the
campaign in mid-January.”

GICC Student Spotlight
Megan Woods, Class of 2019
Megan Woods has been recognized in many areas of her high school athletic, aca-
demic, and fine arts experiences. But she is most well known for her big smile, pos-
itive attitude, and great example of humility.
Megan participates in volleyball, basketball, tennis, choir, and musical. She is on the high honor roll, has been named the Omaha World Herald All-State Volleyball First Team and the 2018 Grand Island Independent Athlete of the Year. She has achieved all of this while staying strong in her Catholic faith and setting an example for those around her. A strong witness to this is Mrs. Zavala’s description of her, “Megan is an outstanding athlete with a strong work ethic and great values. Her leadership is outstanding and her commitment to her school and family is evident in everything she does.”
When asked about the role GICC has played in Megan’s achievements, she responded once again with
humility, “GICC has taught me the importance of academics and how to be self-sufficient. This school
has helped me grow in my faith by keeping Christ at the center of my life. I feel prepared for life after
high school because of the lessons and habits I learned at Central Catholic.”
Megan will be going to University of Nebraska Omaha next year to play volleyball and to pursue a medical
career, majoring in Biomechanics. We are all anxious to see what Megan will do next!
Alumni Spotlight
James Riordin, Class of 1963
James graduated from GICC in 1963. After joining the Peace Corps in 1966 and
spending 2 years in Brazil, Jim returned to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln to finish
his degree. Having fallen in love with the Brazilian culture, he returned to Brazil to
continue his work and went on to build a career in Brazil
at the ACBEU (American Brazilian Cultural Institute),
where he worked for over 27 years. He advanced quick-
ly and eventually became Director of Courses. He
worked with colleges in the United States to bring Amer-
ican students to Brazil, to be immersed in the culture
and language of the region. Although James passed
away in 2016 from cancer complications, he was recently honored by the
ACBEU in their 75th Anniversary publication. According to the article,
James was “the ‘calling card’ for the institution that he helped transform
into Bahia’s biggest and best English-language school with his charisma,
wisdom, joy, competence, and enterprising spirit.” He will be missed
greatly at ACBEU, as “halls and classrooms will never cease to give off the perfume of his elegance or
reflect those many unforgettable lessons of balance and peace.” This is a true testament to the differ-
ence our GICC graduates make, not only here in Nebraska but even as far away as Bahia, Brazil.
2018 Fall Activity Accomplishments
Boys Tennis- The boys tennis team was 3-4 in duals for the season and 18th at state overall. Eli Fox at
#2 in singles placed 7th at state. Another great season for Boys tennis!
Cross Country- Overall it was a good season for all middle school and high school runners! Molli Turek, a 3-time state qualifier, finished 62nd out of 144 runners at state this year!
Football- The Crusader 15 game losing streak was broken in the opening game of the 2018 season! The
boys played hard all season, ending with an overall record of 5-4, a huge improvement over the last cou-
ple of seasons! A big highlight for this year’s season was junior kicker Dietrick Stolz breaking the Class
C1 record by completing 12/15 field goals!
Ladies Golf– A great season overall, with Natalie Kleint qualifying for the state tournament after a cold
and rainy District Tournament! This is the toughest district for ladies golf and the girls barely came up
short to make it to the state tournament but they had an amazing season!
Marching Band- After taking a year off, the GICC Marching Band was back in action this year with Drum
Major Faith Koralewski in the lead. They marched in 4 parades, including Grand Island’s Harvest of Har-
mony and the Minden Band Fest where they earned a ranking of Excellent! Not bad for their first season
back!
Softball– This year’s softball team ended up with a record of 18-13 for the season, which included the
Lou-Platte Conference Tournament championship. Of note was Kiernan Paulk breaking the school record
for home runs in a season!
Volleyball- Staying true to the Legacy, GICC’s volleyball team made it to the state tournament, this time
with a season record of 30-5. In addition, senior Megan Woods broke the school record for Kills in a ca-
reer with 1,618 kills!
Class of 1991– Mari Lliteras– Accepted a promotion as a Grants Management Specialist at the USDA
Forestry Service office in Lakewood, Colorado. She is enjoying living in the big city again!
Congratulations!
