The Communicator Knights of Columbus
Immaculate Conception Council 11991, Goose Creek, SC
Volume 21, Issue 2 Senior Editor: Lenny Tittle August 2018
Grand Knight’s Message
Hard to believe that this is the start of the second month of the New Year for Council
11991. There is so much in the future for the Council that it seems cannot be done in one year.
Maybe, just maybe I will start a trend.
We do have to look at our recruitment hard. I see a lot of baggie pants and droopy eyes at
each meeting. It is time that we look at the new generation for – not only support – but for new
blood to keep us going. Yes, a subject that has been addressed before and will continue to be a
topic of interest. We have a new dedicated Recruitment leader, but we must support him. Do you
carry a form 100, If not with you – WHY? Do you realize that for every form 100 – there is
actually 3 possible applications there. Each sheet is designated for a location, but remember it is
only the start of the process. Take full advantage of what we have.
I think it’s time “we” start thinking outside the box. You’re walking down the street, maybe
for solitude time, maybe taking the dog for a walk. You know how those thoughts jump into your
head. OH Yes! We all have them, and what do we say I’ll write that down when I get home.
Sometimes we can’t remember why we left one room to another. Personally, I carry a note pad
with me all the time. Enuff of this.
What do we have coming up. We have our standard meetings 1st Thursday – Business, 3rd
Thursday – Social. Hey, let’s do a pot luck for that one. Bring your favorite recipe. 4th Thursday –
O & D meeting. Brother’s this is not just for the Officer’s, it is for anyone in the Council to
express their idea or suggestion(s). If not here, then it cannot be address to the floor at the
Business meetings. Sorry – Robert’s rules for meetings.

Grand Knight’s message continued…
OK! Back on track. On August 8th, Father Lawrence will be celebrating his 40th in the
priesthood. He will celebrate the 5:00 PM evening mass at ICC and then have a reception after in
the St. Francis Caracciolo hall at 7:00.
Week of 12 – 18th is Family week. We have to get the new mayor of Goose Creek to sign
the proclamation – all is invited.
Also, at the Social we will be supporting St John’s Catholic School in Hanahan. Be
generous with school supplies – The school counts on us….. Amen. 17th to the 19th is scheduled
for the next Tootsie Roll drive at the “Big” Walmart. Be generous with your time. Larry Rocco
and Tootsie Ann can use your time and help. It’s our only means to generate monies for the State
Columbus HOPE Foundation and the charities this Council supports!
Also on the 18th Pawley’s Island is having a second and third degree. Remember yours –
didn’t think so. Do yourself a favor and renew your pledge with the candidates. Oh! Almost forgot
– I’ll be sailing ( 17-27 ) the wonderful seas with my wife for a week 😊
Say “Goodnight Frank” Good night and God Bless us all.
Your Grand Knight

An appeal from Grand Knight Frank Strunk’s wife Carol…
“Our first project we can do as a group is to support the Felician Sisters in Kingstree. They
help the poor and needy people in the Kingstree area. The Knights throughout the State are one of
their greatest supporters. I am asking for Gift Cards of $10.00 from Bi-Lo and health items, such as
toothpaste, tooth brushes, and mouthwash, body wash & shampoo. We plan on taking these
donations to the Center sometime at the end of August. Thank You for your support…

District Deputy’s Message
Brothers, Vivat Jesus!
It appears to me that this year is going to pass by very quickly – so no time for naps for me.
I will be doing a little more traveling until a District Deputy is assigned to District 9. I will be
working with the 5 councils there and insure that they have someone available to observe and
confer their 1st and 2nd Degrees. My goal during this period is to NOT miss any Business Meetings
for District 13. So what does this mean in simple English??? It means I will be busy and possibly
not as available as normal.
Please make sure I know if you are planning to hold a degree as soon as you can. This will allow
for me to better serve both Districts. I put all of this info into my planner to (I hope) cover
everything. Presently I have only 1 degree on my schedule - it is an Admission Degree at 6726 on
9 AUG.
And while I am on the subject of degrees – the Creekside Team (Dist. # 13’s own Formation/2nd
Degree team) started off the new fraternal year with a degree on the 7th of July at IC. They did a
great job!
Since I have been talking about degrees – what are your personal plans about recruiting? Supreme
is offering some prizes for bringing in new men-it might be a really good time to corner your
Grand Knight and learn all about this. Because the only way that our councils will make their
goals is for us to all bring more men into our order. And I know that with everyone help this will
happen.
YOU make a difference.
Pat Davis Vivat Jesus! District 13

Our Field Agent’s Message
Our Guarantees Set Us Apart
Knights of Columbus life insurance offers something precious few other financial products can –
guarantees. As long as you pay your premiums, the policy proceeds will be there for your
beneficiaries should something happen to you. That’s peace of mind, and that’s what we offer with
every product in our portfolio.
We guarantee the cash value in your whole life policies will be there. We guarantee the rates on your term insurance. We guarantee the rate and your principal in our retirement annuities.
On top of those product guarantees, I guarantee that I will offer professional, high-quality service
that you would expect from our organization. Our Order is among the highest rated life insurers in North America. AM Best has rated the
Knights of Columbus, “Superior” for 40+ consecutive years. It’s a testament to our track record
for excellence and security.
I would suggest that a principal reason that we were able to achieve those accolades is because we
remain steadfastly committed to the vision of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney by
providing life insurance by brother Knights for brother Knights.
That commitment is an essential core value of the Knights of Columbus, and our core values
permeate all levels of our organization. We pledge to serve our brother Knights, and their families,
according to our Golden Rule: “In all my professional relationships, I pledge myself to the
following rule of conduct: I shall, in light of all conditions surrounding those I serve, render that
service which, under the same circumstances, I would apply to myself.”
Let’s talk soon to discuss how our products can bring that peace of mind to you and your family.
Yours in Christ Brandon Chambers 843-224-3022

These events serve to qualify members for earning their Ace Wings Award!
The ACE wings award program has been established to recognize those brother Knights and some
community members who publically advocate for the rights of unborn children. ACE is an acronym for
Pro-life without Apology, without Compromise, and without Exception. To be eligible to receive the ACE
award brother Knights must participate in a minimum of 5 public events supporting a culture of life. 4 of
the 5 events must have to do with protecting the unborn and include events like: Pro-Life Sidewalk Counseling Youth/Family Rally
Volunteer Work at Women’s Center Christian Service 4 Life
40 Days for Life California Pro-Life Lobby Day
West Coast Walk for Life Standing for Life Banquets
Host a Pro-Life Rosary Participate in Pro-Life Parades
The 5th event can either be an event supporting the unborn or an event supporting a culture of life. Our
Holy Father called us to protect life from conception to natural death therefore we must include those who
are forgotten and left to die or are neglected. Special Olympics events qualify as the fifth because many
abortions are performed once it is discovered that the baby might have Downs Syndrome, or some other
defect. Example events include: Special Olympics Volunteer
Working/volunteering at a hospice, nursing home, or veterans hospital
Providing entertainment for the residents of a hospice, nursing home, or veteran’s hospital.
Private events do not qualify. All events must be in a public forum.
Brother Knights may request a second set of ACE wings for their Spouse.
Councils may recognize a non-knight once per calendar year by submitting an ACE Wing award
application and a written justification outlining the reasons the council believes the non-knights deserves to
be recognized by the Knights of Columbus as a strong support of a culture of life. The non-knights must be
a strong supporter of the right to life for the unborn.

If you are imperfect, go often to Communion that you may amend your faults.”

2018 Prayer Intentions of Pope Francis: August 2018: Universal – The Treasure of Families
“That any far-reaching decisions of economists and politicians may protect the family as one of the treasures of
humanity.”
Membership: The next Fourth-Degree Exemplification is scheduled for the coastal area on October 27th to be held at St.
Andrews Parish in Myrtle Beach. Now would be an ideal time to talk with our Third-Degree Knights and encourage them to
join the ranks of the Patriotic Degree. Since we are already asked to carry a copy of the Form 100 with us at all times, we
may want to consider carrying a Form 4 as well (right next to our Rosary).
Personal from the Color Corps Commander: Marshall (M) Michael Cousino and I (CCC) will be conducting training sessions for the Color Corps (CC); that is the Honor
Guard (HG) and Color Guard (CG) on Monday evening August 20th at 7:00 pm in either the CC or the AMC (TBD).
Training sessions will be per the new Color Corps Drill Manual in order to practice our commands and movements and
familiarize everyone with the changes. Training will consist of uniform drill procedures, Color Corps protocol, individual
drills, marching in step as one unit, basic facing movements, silent orders, obstacle training, and manual of the sword. Bring
chapeau, service baldric, sword and gloves. Formal dress is not required but we recommend you wear your regalia shoes. It
is difficult to conduct facing movements in rubber-soled sneakers without doing a face plant or wrenching a knee joint.
Whoever has an interest in becoming a part of either component you are strongly encouraged to participate and train along
with others. Particularly, we strongly encourage those who are certified Color Corps members to attend in order to help
cross-train our “probies.” If you do not have regalia, we do have some extra regalia that has been loaned to others and can be
shared in time of need. We have Sir Knights that personally have their own who hopefully would loan or sell theirs for the
Good of the Order.
Intentions are to meet monthly until we have a good grasp on showmanship. We are good but let’s be Great and be noticed.
Please reply if interested. There is always room for improvement, and always room for more.
Yours in Christ,
Steve Gearhart PGK, PFN

intentions to FN Frank DeAsis or the Commander and help us grow!
Adoration of the Holy Eucharistic: Every Monday through Friday from 9am to 6pm; every Friday following the 6:30pm
Holy Mass until 8am Saturday; and every First Friday following the 6:30pm Mass the Most Blessed Sacrament is present for
public Adoration in the Immaculate Conception Church Adoration Chapel. All are invited and encouraged to give Our Lord
at least one hour each week.
Friday-Saturday, August 24-25th – Knights scheduled Eucharistic Adoration at ICC from 11pm to 1am. Minimum two
Knights are required. Come and spend some quiet time with the Lord.
Veteran’s Victory Home, Walterboro: To honor our continuing patriotic commitment, we ask that all continue to bring
toiletry articles to any of our meetings and socials throughout the year. These items will be collected and shared between the
Walterboro Veteran’s Victory Home and the Felician Sisters in Kingstree. The Veteran’s Victory Home also asks for craft
items, books (prefer large print), periodicals and newspapers. Some of these items are used in their therapy sessions. The
adult coloring books with colored pencils are exceptionally popular.
Our Lady of Joyful Hope: The Felician Sisters in Kingstree continue to help those in desperate need with the basics of
food, clothing and shelter, and humbly ask for help in replenishing their pantry with food, toiletry and hygiene items. We
will continue to collect toiletry and hygiene items to help with restocking. Therefore, at each meeting, social or gathering we
will have a box available in which to put any donated items. The Felician Sisters at the St. Anne Felician Center remain
humbly thankful for our donations and support.
Respect Life!
As of August 1, over 9,397 babies have been saved!
Every 30 seconds, a baby’s life is taken by abortion.
Human Coalition – We continue to include articles intended to provide scientific, rational and ethical information rebutting
arguments for abortion. The articles by Brian Fisher are very extensive and are based on a global solicitation for comment
and opinion. It will be published monthly with the following individual topics.
Rape/Incest
My Body/My Choice
Life of the Mother
Personhood
The Unborn Child Is Unfit/Unwanted
Abortion Is Already Legal — Stop Trying to Change It
“This month we editorialize the topic of Personhood.
The fourth most common pro-abortion argument you face deals with personhood. Here are some of the comments:
“It’s not a person yet.”
“It’s a potential life.”
“It’s a blob of cells.”
The “blob of cells” argument is uniformly refuted by science. At the moment of fertilization, a zygote is created. The
zygote has DNA provided by both parents and, therefore, all of the genetic information to develop into more mature stages.
The zygote period lasts about four days. He or she develops into a blastocyst for some 14 days, and then develops into an
embryo. After nine weeks post-conception, he or she is termed a fetus. From zygote to delivered baby, he or she is a human
being. There is no point during development when he or she matures into a human or somehow “turns human.” He or she is
a unique human being from the point of fertilization.
Page - 11
Though there are numerous definitions of what it means to be “alive,” the most common criteria scientists use to determine
life are if something has the capacity to grow, metabolize, respond to stimuli, adapt, and reproduce. Thus, from the time of
fertilization, the zygote is alive because he or she possesses all of these qualities. The baby’s sex can be derived as early as
five to nine days after conception. His or her heart beats around day 24, and brain waves can be detected as early as day 43.
There is no point during development when he or she is an inanimate blob of cells.
This brief biology lessons also refutes the “potential life” argument. Emily Letts, the 25-year-old woman who recently
filmed her own abortion, pronounced, “Yes, I do realize it was a potential life. I have a special relationship with my
ultrasound.” Her statement is confounding and paradoxical. The idea of “potential life” is folly. We are either alive or
dead. We are not “potentially” alive any more than we can be “potentially dead.” We either exhibit the qualities of living
beings or we don’t. Letts willingly killed the life inside of her and instead has a “special relationship” with the sonogram
picture of her now deceased child. The idea of “potential life” presumes that something has the ability to, at some point in
the future, become alive. But as our brief look at the zygote confirms, he or she is alive at the point of conception. Through
internal self-direction, he or she is growing, metabolizing, responding to various stimuli, adapting to the environment, and
already has the necessary genetic material in place for reproduction.
“It’s not a person yet.” The question of personhood is really the crux of the pro-abortion argument. But if you run across a
pro-abortion advocate who brings up this claim, just ask this simple question: What is the distinction between a person and a
human being? Using Scott Klusendorf’s SLED examples, here are some typical responses and refutations to the various
personhood arguments:
1. When a fetus gets to a certain size, they are now a person. Since when does size (S) determine value? Is a toddler worth
less than a teenager because the toddler is smaller? What size determines our personhood and who determines that?
2. We can abort a fetus before he or she feels pain. We agree that fetuses are less developed than we are. But should we kill
them because they are so? People in their sleep, on anesthesia, or with certain health conditions don’t feel pain. Can we kill
them? Why does level of development (L) determine value?
3. When the baby is born, they are now a person. Since when does location determine value? Am I worth more inside a
house than I am outside on the lawn? There are many pro-abortion advocates who believe we should value the baby in the
womb — but only at a certain age. So, which is it? Inside or outside of the womb? Why does environment (E) determine
value?
4. Before a baby reaches viability, they can be aborted. Does degree of dependency (D) determine value? Infants are
completely dependent on others for sustenance. Can we kill them because they are dependent on us? Why does viability
outside the womb determine value?
Morally speaking, there is no difference in value between a zygote and an adult. There is no distinction between a person and
a human being. The pro-abortion industry uses the personhood argument because science has proven beyond all doubt that
zygotes are members of the human race. So pro-abortion advocates had to come up with some other reason to kill unborn
babies that wasn’t based on science. They made arbitrary (and frequently changing) definitions of personhood in order to
advance their abortion agenda. Don’t get caught in that trap. In the words of the immortal Dr. Seuss, “A person is a person
no matter how small.”
With unwavering hope, FOR LIFE! We continue to affirm that abortion will not be ended in the Courts – It will be ended in
our Culture!”

The Issues That Matter to Us: South Carolina Citizens for Life, Inc., is a non-profit, single issue, right-to-life organization
devoted to restoring legal personhood to the unborn and to protecting innocent human life by eliminating abortion,
infanticide, and euthanasia from our society. Our success has depended on maintaining our single-issue focus on life. By
focusing on the single issue of life, we have been able to bring together a broad base of people – who may disagree on other
important issues in our state, but who are dedicated to ensuring that the protection of our laws is extended to the most
vulnerable members of society: the unborn, the elderly, the medically dependent and persons with disabilities.
You can look in the Yellow Pages under the heading "Abortion Alternatives," or call, toll-free, 1 (800) 848-LOVE, any time,

National Right to Life - Quick Facts
Just over five decades ago, a movement began to take shape. Doctors and teachers, lawyers and homemakers, men and
women of diverse backgrounds, different faiths and opposing political viewpoints all came together united by one common
belief: that taking a human life through abortion was anathema to American values. As pro-abortion forces began pushing
for changes in state laws, those dedicated pro-life activists rose up and became a powerful voice against those who viewed
human life as expendable. Even as pro-lifers were securing victories in the late 1960s and early 1970s, two court cases—one
challenging Texas’ abortion law, the other challenging Georgia’s abortion law—were working their way to the Supreme
Court.
In its twin Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions, which were handed down on January 22, 1973, the Court federalized
the issue and legalized abortion for any reason. Tragically, 45 years later, National Right to Life estimates that over 60
million unborn children have lost their lives as a result of those decisions. Just one abortion is a tragedy—not just
because an innocent child died, but because of the lasting impact the abortion itself had on the mothers of those children.
However, the right-to-life movement has remained undeterred. Through our determination to protect mothers and their
children, we continue to see evidence that our efforts to educate our nation about the unborn child’s humanity, and our efforts
to enact protective pro-life legislation, are having a tremendous impact in moving our nation away from Roe and Doe’s
deadly legacy.
We will continue to do battle on behalf of the unborn at every turn.

40 Days for Life:
40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities
the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. It puts into action a desire to
cooperate with God in the carrying out of His plan for the end of abortion. It draws attention to the evil of abortion through
the use of a three-point program:
Prayer and fasting
Constant vigil
Community outreach

PRAYER FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST:
Immaculate Heart of Mary
The Catholic Church dedicates the month of August to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Immaculate Heart is often
venerated together with the Sacred Heart of Jesus (the devotion we celebrate in June), and with good reason. Just as the
Sacred Heart represents Christ's love for mankind, the Immaculate Heart represents the desire of the Blessed Virgin to bring
all people to her Son. There is no better example of the Christian life than that offered by Mary. Through the following
prayer, which helps to deepen our devotion to her Immaculate Heart, we can join the Mother of God in drawing closer to
Christ.
This Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary illustrates perfectly the Marian doctrine of the Catholic Church:
We do not worship Mary or place her above Christ, but we come to Christ through Mary, as Christ came to us through her.
In this prayer of consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we dedicate ourselves to follow the example of the Mother of
God. The Blessed Virgin desires nothing other than the Will of her Son; we ask her to intercede for us, that we may know His
Will and live it in our lives.
Prayer of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart
“Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, and tender Mother of all people, I consecrate myself to your Immaculate
Heart, and recommend to you my family, my country, and the whole human race. Please accept my
consecration, dearest Mother, and use me as you wish, to accomplish your designs upon the world. O
Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of Heaven and earth, rule over me, and teach me how to allow the Heart of
Jesus to rule and triumph in me and around me, as it has ruled and triumphed in you. Amen.”

PRAYER REQUESTS FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER:
On behalf of the family of Barbara Schattle who passed away recently we offer the following. Barbara was the widow of
deceased SK Lee Schattle PGK:
“May the poor whose lives you have touched and changed
be the first to meet you at the hour of your death.
May they sing and dance with you all the way to the Throne of God,
And may you hear the voice of your Savior say
‘WELL DONE GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT.
ENTER INTO THE JOY OF YOUR LORD’”
Anonymous prayer provided by SK Gene Alaura.

Pray for all those others sick and in distress, relatives, friends and associates, and for all Knights.
“When we do all we can, then God will do what we cannot."
PRAYER FOR OUR CITIZENS: Continue to pray for our citizens, for those misplaced or injured due to the massive wild
fires blanketing the West coast, and for an end to the continuing, seemingly escalating, senseless violence in our country.
Also, pray and for the safety of all members of Law Enforcement, Fire Service and Emergency Services. Let us also pray
that our national leadership will make decisions supporting religious freedom and Right to Life with positive effects on our
entire Country.
PRAYER FOR OUR RELIGIOUS: We ask for your continued prayers for SK Jerry Caoile and SK James Baker as they
continue their studies for the Diaconate program, and for our Adorno and Diocesan Seminarians and those other young men
and women progressing in their religious discernment and studies.
PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS: Continue to keep our military servicemen and women - those who are now where many
of us once were - in your thoughts and prayers, as well as those in public safety.
“Protect them from the physical and moral dangers of military life. Keep them close to You and help them live
the Commandments. Lord Jesus, give them courage to serve their Country with honor and dignity. Be with
them when they are in danger strengthening them when they face hardships. And Lord, grant that, when their
service is finished, they may return to us sound in mind, body and soul. In particular, we remember those who
made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their fellow man and Country. Amen.”
“It is a great time to be a Catholic and always a great time to be an active Knight.” We ask all Sir Knights to keep
actively recruiting our patriotic Knights.
