KOTRC CLUB MEETING

March 13, 2012

Meeting brought to order by President Tom Collier at 7

PM

Pledge of Allegiance by all members

No Guests

Show & Tell

Eric Rule showed short kit of Dale Kirn’s Tourquette.

This model will be used in a “One Design” Contest. The

KOTRC will purchase the short kits and sell them to

interested members for $ 19.99 as a Fund Raising pro-

ject.

Howard Doering showed a selection of Steve Wilks

Carbon Fibre Speed props. He had them in one of his

father’s old oil paint box that Howard had sectioned to

contain the props, spinners & wrenches.

Joe Orzek brought a Sterling S1 Ringmaster and of-

fered it for sale @ $100.00

Warren Walker showed a Brodak .25 which he got on

one of Mike Fox’s “Rain Checks” from the Christmas

Banquet draw.

Bob Werle had plans for 2 1/2A flying wings that he

suggested would make a great Core-O-Plast project.

He also had 3 plans for Scientific Bipes.

New Business

Mike Ross asked members for suggestion to improve

his ARF Tudor which had way too much pull. Sugges-

tions included moving the lead outs to 1” behind the C/

G, taking out the rudder offset and removing the en-

gine angle plates from behind the mounting lugs.

Mike Alurac brought a catalog for proposed KOTRC

hats.

Howard Doering suggested that the club needed to ad-

dress sealing the repaired cracks at Whittier Narrows.

A suggestion was made and agreed upon that the club

members would do this the first weekend in April (7-

8th) so that the field surfaces would be ready for the

speed and Palmer contests.

Randy Heydon announced that the Fullerton Airport

Days would be held in the Fall of 2012. The folks at AFI

have again requested that the KOTRC have the “Kids

Fly for Free”.

Mike Fox proposed that the club purchase a “Tumble

Drum” for use with the draw. A couple of members

said that they had something of the sort at home and

would bring it/them in for Mike to use.

Old Business

Warren Walker (CD) announced that the sanction for

the Palmer had been sent to the AMA. He also advised

that the reservation for Whittier Narrows had been

made to the county and the required fees paid. He

then asked for judges, and other workers. A number of

members agreed to help at the event.

A discussion was held on how the prizes were to be

awarded. It was the general agreement that 1 draw

ticket would be given to each contestant for each event

entered. 1 ticket for each person who worked at the

event will be given out. Mike Fox suggested that War-

ren use a deck of cards to select the prize awarded.

There will be a prize draw each day of the Palmer Con-

test.

Food will be available from the Rangers.

Fees to be $15 for 1st event and $10. For each addi-

tional with a maximum of $35.00 ONLY FOR PRE

EVENT ENTRIES.

Fess at the day of the contest to be $20 for 1st event

and $10.00 for each additional event with no maxi-

mum.

Appearance Points on Sat will be awarded prior to

Classic. On Sunday the judges will award the points

prior to the first flight in each event.

Draw held by Mike Fox at 8:25 PM after which the

meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted by Eric Rule for Larry Renger.

Thinking Safety

Hi Knights,

I am sure anyone who has spoken with my

friend John is aware that I am wearing a cast on my

right arm. Therefore this month’s report will be short.

First, let me offer my condolences to the family

of our beloved member and friend, Dale Kirn. He will

be greatly missed by the modeling community.

For our safety discussion I would like to ad-

dress an issue, seldom reviewed; starting procedures.

After properly choking our engine, it should

ignite with one flip. However occasionally this desired

result does not occur. If more priming is required, we

sometimes get impatient and simply pour more fuel in

through the exhaust without removing the glow driver.

This can be dangerous. The glow plug is quite hot at

this point and a fire could result. Although this is a rare

occurrence, I have seen engines catch fire under these

circumstances.

I realize the frustration of removing the glow

driver each time; however it is the safest way.

Until next month fly safely.

Your Safety Officer,

JOEL CHESLER

VSC XXIV

By John Wright

(Drum Roll)(Western Music) They come out of the

west, the Knights, Andy, Larry, Stan, John and Gary,

to fly the VSC once again. We were blessed with good

weather for four of the 5 days. The fifth day got

windy toward the end. Since the turnout was lower

this year, the flying was over before noon every day,

as only one round is flown each day.

Andy brought his Humongous with a Super Cyc 60,

and has it dialed in pretty well. Stan also flew it in

spark OTS. Although there was no hardware brought

home, they both put in respectable flights and we can

expect more and improved flying from this effort.

In glow, I had to fly my trusty 24 year old Barn-

stormer/McCoy 40S21 as my new Big Job met an un-

timely end due to an improper glue joint at the stab/

fuse joint two weeks before the VSC. It was on its

13th flight when the mishap occurred. Stan flew his

Adams’ Special/Brodak 40. And Larry brought his

Baby Clown/ diesel 061. Larry’s engine run left

something to be desired and could not post the kind

of score he desired. Stan flew well but in this compe-

tition, good doesn’t get you very far. John did better

and managed a 7th place. Complete results are

posted on the web in various places. So at the end of

Wednesday, the OTS machines were put away and

the Classics were brought out.

As I mentioned, the weather was great for the first

two days of classic. By this time Andy and Jackie had

headed home and Gary and Pat Akers had arrived.

Gary had fought many demons just getting there and

arrived in a rented car and with just a OS LA46. He

proceeded to buy an Oriental ARF already built, and a

handle, borrow lines and a prop and got it all together

in time to fly Thursday. Stan flew his new Skylark

with a GMA JETT 50. The first day he put up a 544.5.

I flew an Ares/OS35S built by the late Jim Armour.

Besides the usual popped covering, the nose ring

came off during a practice flight and I spent the eve-

ning doing repairs. I left out a maneuver that first

day and didn’t even realize it until I picked up my

score sheets. Larry had bad luck with his own design

Terror from his MIT thesis. The nose fell off and he

had to bring out the Baby clown. The next day I

made up for lost time with a 547, but I would have to

rely on the third day score to redeem myself. Gary

was still sorting out fuel consumption issues and had

some over/under runs. The third and final day of clas-

sic brought in the wind, mild at the beginning of the

day but steadily increasing. I didn’t hold out much

hope with my flight order of 18th, but with 10 no

shows in front of me I flew 8th in about a 10 mph

breeze and got a respectable score. Stan got blown

out due to high winds and Gary due to under runs,

but we all came home with whole aircraft. I have

since stripped all the covering off and will recover

with poly span. As for scores, they were all high this

year. It took about a 570 average score to place 10th

in Classic. Former Knight Bob Whitely finally won an-

other VSC, and by 1/4 point over Bob Hunt. See the

internet for a full accounting.

I highly recommend going to VSC if at all possible.

There are great old friends to see and new ones to

make. The swap meet up along the bluff is another

reason, the evening parties, and many other sights

that you just don’t get around here. Kathy and I

usually take in the view at Gates Pass and Lookout

Mountain. See you all the next year.

(Continued from page 3) Aircraft:

Flat plate airfoil only. Any design, any size. Kit or

“homebrew” designs are OK.

Power is any single engine .061 c.i. or smaller.

Flight:

The maneuvers are the same as the PAMPA pattern

and in the same order. However,

there are no intermediate laps, and only one repeti-

tion is required.

Judging:

The flights will be judged as a whole, rather than indi-

vidual scores for each maneuver.

Scores will be from 1 to 10 for the entire perform-

ance.

All contestants will judge all flights (except their own,

of course). The scores of all the judges will be added

and the highest total for one flight determines the vic-

tor.

Kwikee Stunt Results

What is Kwikee Stunt?

Kwikee Stunt is the brainchild of our one and only

Larry Renger. The idea behind this event is to just

have fun with the least complex airplane.

This event is designed to be flown with the simplest

of engine/aircraft configurations. It

is intended for fun-fly contests. The flights are very

short, and the judging is simple. The flight becomes

a total performance rather than an assembly of ma-

neuvers.
