For thousands of years before JohannesGutenberg invented the printing press, books were printed and illustrated by hand— a painstaking process often completedwithin the confines of monastery walls.

The St. John’s Bible, a modern version ofthat ancient practice commissioned by St.John’s Abbey and University, depicts the firsthandwritten illuminated Bible of a monu-mental size commissioned by a BenedictineMonastery in more than 500 years.

The original volumes are housed at theHill Museum and Manuscript Library on thecampus of St. John’s Abbey and University inCollegeville, Minnesota.

But 299 reproductions of the work havebeen made, and two volumes are on loanthis year to Saint Leo University, Holy NameMonastery and Saint Leo Abbey.

The illuminated volumes and other reli-gious artworks were the focus of adiscussion led by the Rev. Isaac Camacho, abbot of Saint Leo Abbey, which is aBenedictine community of monks in St. Leo.

The abbot’s talk, “The Art of Spirituality,”covered not only the use of art to inspirespiritual understanding and growth, but alsothe artful pursuit of the spiritual life.

“Who created me? What is there afterlife? What is God? How is God?” Camachosaid. “God’s beauty does not remainwrapped up in himself.”

Through his creation of the universe, theabbot added, “our God has already demon-strated that natural things are fundamentallygood.”

Art is an expression of mankind’s cre-ative nature, he added.

“Every single human being knows thatthere is something creative inside of us andart is an expression of that,” Camacho said.“We cannot deny that art will lead us to tryto understand that there is beauty beyondourselves.”

He also believes that being artistic is anintrinsic part of being human.

“If you say you are not an artist, you arelying to yourself,” Camacho said.

For some people, the art can be as sim-ple as a stick figure. For others, it can be apoem.

Pursuing that artistic expression, andusing it to help express spiritual discovery, helps people feel more connected to theirspiritual life, the abbot added.

He encouraged people to feel free tomark up their Bibles with illustrations orother notations, to help make it truly theirown.

“Your spiritual journey will be nourishedwhen you discover something beautiful,”Camacho said.

The St. John’s Bible was completed by ateam of calligraphers led by Donald Jackson, the calligrapher to Queen Elizabeth II. The

calligraphers collaborated with 80 contem-porary artists who illuminated the work.

The volumes are made from traditionalmaterials such as calfskin, ancient ink, goldand silver leaf. Calligraphers used quill pens, fashioned from goose, turkey and swanfeathers.

The reproductions on display at the uni-versity’s library are two of the sevenvolumes of the Heritage Edition of the St.John’s Bible — a limited edition of full-sizefacsimile reproductions of the original work.

The public is invited to see the sacredworks of art, which are on display in thelobby of the Daniel A. Cannon MemorialLibrary, on Saint Leo University’s campus at33701 State Road 52 in St. Leo.

The two volumes that are on display in-clude the first five books of the OldTestament and the Gospels of Matthew,Mark, Luke and John from the NewTestament. Pages of the text are turned on aregular basis to new illuminated passages inthe volumes.

Saint Leo abbot discusses the art of spirituality

Reproductions of two volumes of the St. John’s Bible are on display at Cannon MemorialLibrary at the University of Saint Leo this year to help celebrate the 125th anniversary ofSaint Leo Abbey, Holy Name Monastery and the university.

When visitors drop by downtown DadeCity, its stately historic courthouse, uniqueshops and good restaurants likely will im-press them.

But there’s so much more to Dade City’sstory, and Madonna Jervis Wise has capturedthat through 200 photographs of the peopleand places in this city that initially wasknown as Fort Dade.

Wise began working on the volumeabout a year ago. She’d done another bookcalled “Zephyrhills” for Arcadia Publishing, and the South Carolina publisher ap-proached her to see if she had an interest inwriting a book about Dade City.

Wise wasn’t sure initially if she wantedto take it on. But her family encouraged herto pursue the opportunity, and Wise decidedto meet with some local leaders to see ifthey’d like to have a book about their com-munity published.

John Moors, the executive director of theDade City Chamber of Commerce, greetedthe idea with enthusiasm and set up a meet-ing for Wise with the city’s developmentdirector. She also met with the Dade CityPreservation Advisory Board, which encour-aged her to write the book and providedinvaluable suggestions, she said.

Wise said her husband Ernie played aninstrumental role, too.

The book includes photographs of every-thing from old railroad depots to statelyhomes, from ballet dancers to orange pack-ers. It includes photographs of the sons anddaughters of Dade City, who shaped thecommunity and played an instrumental rolein Pasco County and beyond.

“Dade City is a rich historical hub,” Wisesaid. “For many, many decades, this countywas run by Pasco High graduates.”

The book showcases the community’sdiversity, covering the history of the African-American community and its migrantfarmworkers.

Wise used information and photographsshe gleaned from a multitude of sources. JeffMiller of the West Pasco Historical Societyprovided about 3,000 photos for her to con-sider from his collection.

She also used photos from the collec-tions of Helen Eck Sparkman and of Oliverand Barbara DeWitt, who provided them toEddie Herrmann, one of the authors of “TheHistoric Places of Pasco County.”

The Pasco County Genealogical Society

and the Tampa-Hillsborough County PublicLibrary System’s Genealogical Collection, aswell as the librarians, were invaluable re-sources for the work as well, Wise said.

She used photographs from The MemoryProject, produced by the Florida govern-ment.

The book’s photographs convey thecity’s history through its people, residences, churches, social and civic clubs, and com-merce. It points out that Pasco Packing, laterknown as Lykes Pasco, was the largest or-

ange packing plant in the world, in the daysbefore freezes, blight and developmentwiped out much of Florida’s citrus industry.

The photographs also show homes ofearly residents, with many of the structuresstill standing today.

“My husband photographed many of thehouses,” Wise said, noting some of the pho-tos had to be taken more than once, to besure that alarm signs and air conditionersdidn’t show up in the frame.

When they were out in the neighbor-hoods taking the photographs, peoplewould approach them and ask what theywere doing, Wise said. When she told themabout the book, she said, “they would addother pieces to the story. It was great. It wasjust great.”

The actual work of culling photographs, writing captions and arranging the layoutwas a gargantuan task. But Wise enjoyedlearning about Dade City’s history andspending time with the people who helped

on the project.Besides Herrmann, other primary

sources included William G. Dayton and J.Thomas Touchton.

“I probably talked to Eddie (Herrmann)nearly every day,” Wise said. “And Bill is a realstoryteller. He can give you the feel for thedifferent eras. He knew a lot of the inside ofwhat was going on.”

Touchton, a Dade City native and leaderof the effort to establish The Tampa BayHistory Center, also provided valuable in-sights, she said. Touchton has aninternational reputation for the collection ofmaps he’s acquired, and has fond recollec-tions of Dade City.

“He told me the most fabulous storiesabout growing up there,” she said.

As she conducted her research, Wise wasstruck by the realization that Dade City re-mains a cohesive community, somethingthat’s not all that common in the 21st centu-ry.

As people page through the volume,Wise hopes it will inspire them to learnmore about Dade City.

“The book is intended to be an invitationto learn more about Dade City and serve asan enticement to walk through ChurchAvenue, visit the historic courthouse, dine ina vintage café, or visit the Pioneer FloridaMuseum and Village,” Wise writes in the ac-knowledgements section of the book.“History must be shared to pass it on to thenext generation.”

Try a hearing aid for 30 days throughGardner Audiology’s field study

By Mike MatthewSpecial to The Laker / Lutz News

Jodi Conter is a certified audiologist withGardner Audiology in Zephyrhills. She’sworked there with Dan Gardner, the founder, for 29 years. Dan opened the doors to hispractice 31 years ago and now has offices inZephyrhills, Tampa, Pasadena, Iverness,Crystal River and Carillon.

“Our goal is to help peoplehear better,” says Jodi. They’ve set up a field studywith Starkey Hearing, thelargest manufacturer of hear-ing aids in the U.S., to enablepeople to try out a hearing aidfor 30 days, risk free.

“This field study is open toanyone, whether they’veworn a hearing aid before ornot,” says Jodi. “Noisy envi-ronments are one of thebiggest challenge for wearersof hearing aids.”

Gardner Audiology haspartnered with Starkey Hearing to bring tomarket the latest technology for noise man-agement in hearing aids. “People used toturn down or turn off their hearing aid innoisy environments,” says Jodi. “Currentresearch is finding new techniques for han-dling noise. These new hearing aids canautomatically adjust to the particular envi-ronment.”

How about a hearing aid made for aniPhone? An app on the iPhone allows thewearer to control, modify and adjust thehearing aid to fit specific situations and envi-ronments. It also geo-tags the location andautomatically changes the setting for thatenvironment as soon as you arrive.

“Hearing loss is a challenge,” says Jodi.“People don’t accept hearing loss as easily asthey accept vision loss. The technology hasgreatly improved. Hearing aids are muchmore comfortable and noticeably smaller to

the point where they’re almost invisible.”Most people don’t see one day and not see

the next. It’s the same with hearing. It’soften gradual. People can lose hearing forparticular sounds, such as consonants. Theymay lose the ability to distinguish particularpitches or frequencies.

“People often complain about mumbling, thinking that’s the reason they’re not hearing

well,” says Jodi. “That’susually a sign that they’velost hearing for a particularpitch. Today’s hearing aidscan be programmed to fitthe exact type of hearingloss the person is experienc-ing.”

“Our biggest challenge isgetting people in the door,”says Jodi. “My greatest joyis seeing the expression ontheir face when I turn onthe hearing aid and theybegin to hear sounds theyhaven’t heard in years.”

“Research has shown adirect connection between hearing loss andmemory loss such as dementia andAlzheimer’s disease,” says Jodi. “Lack of stim-ulation causes the brain to shut down.Getting a hearing aid is critical in the earlystages of memory loss.”

“Some of the same issues that cause hear-ing problems may affect balance and dizzi-ness,” says Jodi. “Everyone should have abaseline hearing test done. Then when theycome back, we can tell if they’re experiencinghearing problems.”

The human brain is an amazing organ. Itadjusts and compensates for hearing loss quitewell, up to a point. The only way to be surethat we’re hearing as well as we could be is toget a hearing test from a certified audiologist.

At least they know where they stand. The Zephyrhills Bulldogs are a very good

football team, as evidenced by their firstthree games — winning by a combinedscore of 146-44.

But they’re clearly not the class of theirdistrict after taking a 45-10 loss at home todefending Class 5A-District 6 championSouth Sumter. And according to Head CoachReggie Roberts, the Bulldogs definitely arenot the kind of team that can hurt them-selves and expect to beat a school of thatcaliber.

“We knew that we can’t make mistakeswith that team and survive, and we didthat,” he said.

The Raiders had a strong start againstZephyrhills, building an early 21-point lead. But the Bulldogs fought back, scoring atouchdown and getting in position to scoreanother. Instead, they settled for a field goal, later gave up the ball on a muffed punt, andallowed another touchdown before half-time.

That took them from a more manageable21-14 or 21-10 halftime deficit, to insteadtrailing 28-10 at the break — a big blow in agame marked by poor weather.

“That’s tough to do against a very goodfootball team,” Roberts said. “I think that wasa turning point.”

While it’s tough to lose a district game,it’s also disappointing to see some playersnot bring their best to such an importantcontest, Roberts said. Yet a few did answerthe call and gave their best in difficult condi-tions. Players like offensive linemen AustinLarkin and Jonah Thomas caught the coach’seye for their effort the entire game, and sen-ior Jaylen Pickett was singled out for hismental and physical toughness, and effortsto motivate the team.

“I saw him all game trying to get theguys up,” Roberts said of Pickett. “He’s acompetitor.”

While bouncing back after a tough lossisn’t easy, Roberts isn’t giving the team anyother option. Zephyrhills had some goodpractices following the loss, and are work-ing to get back to the dominant play theydisplayed earlier in the year. And with therest of their district games coming up in

consecutive weeks, there’s no room forerror — and not much time to right theship.

“We have to roll from here on out,”Roberts said. “We can’t lose anymore.”

The Bulldogs also can’t dwell on the loss. They have to have a short memory andfocus on the opponents in front of them,Roberts said.

And if the team finds their early-season

form and gets back to their winning ways, the coach doesn’t rule out a rematch withthe Raiders down the road. It will take aconsistent, strong effort, fewer mistakes, anda winning streak, but the postseason and an-other shot at South Sumter is possible.

“That’s the moral of the story here. Wehave to play hard,” Roberts said. “That’s agood football team. If we continue to winand don’t lose again, we’ll see them again.”

FRED BELLET/PHOTOZephyrhills kicker No. 15 Zach Gleaton punts as he gets protection from Bulldog’s Lorine Parker, 32, as he blocks South Sumter’s CarsonWells during game action Sept. 19 at Zephyrhills. South Sumter was up at the half, 28-10.

“They don’t want to be second toDisney,” Sheffield told a group of businessleaders recently at a Greater Wesley ChapelChamber of Commerce economic develop-ment meeting. “The problem they arehaving is that the fans coming to the gamesthere are not Braves fans. They are there forDisney, and that is a problem for them.”

The Braves have played spring training atESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex nearDisney World in Orlando since 1998, buthave been unofficially considering other op-tions in recent months since their leasethere is set to expire in 2017.

Wesley Chapel could be perfect for theteam, Sheffield says, since many might con-sider the Interstate 75 trip between thereand Atlanta a straight shot. It also makessense as a second home for the team with-out making it inconvenient for its fan base.

“That is an easy commute for them,”Sheffield said. “All those fans could comestraight here, plus go to other places like

Disney and Clearwater Beach, since theywould be close by. That is a possibility that ispretty much there for the taking.”

The sports complex was proposed byJames Talton, owner of Blue MarbleStrategic, and would supply 20 baseball andmultipurpose athletic fields, as well as dor-mitories for players and other amenities. It’sa way to tap into the lucrative youth base-ball market, he said.

Talton is raising $54 million in privatefunding, and looking for $11 million fromPasco County tourist tax money, to makesuch a project a reality.

Even without a major stadium compo-nent, Talton feels his sports complex couldplay a role in creating 8,000 jobs in thecounty, and produce $318 million in annualeconomic impact, as well as a direct rev-enue stream of $9 million each year to thecounty government. But if the project couldattract a Major League team, there’s notelling how big of an impact that wouldhave in the Wesley Chapel area, Talton said.

Creating a separate field for spring train-ing would not be anywhere near the

headache the Tampa Bay Rays are experi-encing with its efforts to get out ofTropicana Field in St. Petersburg. In fact, spring training fields are typically muchsmaller than regular season venues, Taltonsaid, where average attendance usuallyholds around 6,700.

“We would want to put in up to 12,000seats, but that could be a little ambitious,” hesaid. “A lot of what we hear from the leagueis that they want to have no more than8,000 seats, because they want to make surethey are filled.”

Yet, just from his own youth baseball op-erations, Talton believes he can fill 3,000 ofthose seats with his players and families thatmight be using the rest of the facility duringspring training time. He wants to be openfor business by January 2017, which wouldbe just ahead of when the Braves’ lease withDisney expires.

But are the Braves even looking to stay inthis part of the state? Braves president JohnSchuerholz told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in March that staying in CentralFlorida could be tough.

Many teams that used to participate inspring training are looking for other parts ofthe state, especially south, and it could betough for Atlanta to travel around.

The Braves want to stay in Florida, how-ever, and have waved off any suggestionsthe team could move to the other popularspring training state of Arizona. But if theAstros move out of Kissimmee, and theWashington Nationals leave their home inViera, that could leave the Atlanta teamrather isolated in Lake Buena Vista.

Yet moving to Wesley Chapel could be agood move in that respect. The Tigers wouldstill be available in Lakeland, joining fiveother teams in quick driving distance — theNew York Yankees in Tampa, the Blue Jays inDunedin, the Philadelphia Phillies inClearwater, the Pittsburgh Pirates inBradenton, and the Baltimore Orioles inSarasota.

The Braves also would be a lot closer tothe Tampa Bay Rays, who play spring train-ing games in Port Charlotte.

A request to the Braves for comment isstill pending.

The team, she said, is her family. “Eversince I started, they’ve accepted me likenothing was ever wrong.”

Being an athlete might be a challenge forTaylor physically, but it’s also in her genes.Vanessa Sanders was a softball player in highschool and college, and still competes tothis day. Her father, Scott Sanders, was agolfer in college. Disability or not, they want-ed Taylor to experience the camaraderie ofteam competition, and the benefits and chal-lenges that come with competing in sports.

While she enjoys the competition, hercerebral palsy has made Taylor used to morepainful challenges outside the pool. Her hipswere growing at the wrong angle due tolearning to walk in an unorthodox way, andshe would fall up to 10 times on a dailybasis. But two surgeries in the past year hashelped reduce her pain, limited her falls dra-matically, and allowed her to live somewhatmore comfortably.

The only drawback in Taylor’s mind? Itset her back in the pool, and her timesaren’t where she wants them to be.

“Because of my surgeries, I’ve kind ofstarted back to day one all over again,” shesaid.

But Hannah Cutkomp, a teammate andcaptain, is impressed with how far Taylorhas come in her time with the team.

“There’s been a drastic change fromwhat I’ve seen from last year. She’s swim-ming so much better,” Cutkomp said. “She’san amazing teammate.”

If Taylor is focused and determined whileswimming, she’s just as tenacious when she’son dry land. She plays guitar for fun, butgraphic design and animation is her calling.

The sophomore already is accumulatingcollege scholarships with an eye on the bestschools to help her with that career. Sheeven wants to raise money for a trip toCalifornia to visit legendary graphic studiosDreamworks Studios and Pixar AnimationStudios to get real-world perspective on theindustry.

That kind of focus is just part of who she is.“When I find something I love, I run with

it,” Taylor said. And her parents are proud to see the re-

sults of raising her without words like“can’t” in her vocabulary. They’re also vocalsupporters at her swim meets, with hermother getting overwhelmed seeing Tayloraccomplish so much when doctors warnedthem to expect so little.

“I cry every single time,” Vanessa Sanderssaid. “Every time.”

of Crist. “The first two years, he was chasingthe vice presidency and not focusing on thestate. The second two years, he was runningfor a United States Senate seat. And he is thefirst governor in the history of Florida to notrun for re-election. That is how much hecared about being governor.”

Lopez-Cantera was a member of theFlorida House representing the Miami areaduring Crist’s time in the governor’s office, and said he withdrew support of the gover-nor almost from the beginning, despite thetwo being members of the same politicalparty at the time.

“I have known Charlie for almost 20 years,

and I really got to know him when I was anew member of the Florida House,” Lopez-Cantera said. “That’s when I lost faith in him.”

The lieutenant governor said problemsstarted for him when then House SpeakerMarco Rubio wanted to pass a much moreaggressive property tax bill that would pro-vide larger exemptions on the first$200,000 of a home’s value, and then 15percent beyond that. Crist, however, “want-ed a simple property tax bill, and that isunfortunately what the citizens of Floridagot.”

Lopez-Cantera and Rubio, however, would vote for Crist’s version of the bill in aspecial session, using a property tax exemp-tion method still used today.

All of Scott’s decisions “have not been

popular,” either, Lopez-Cantera said. “But theyhave been the right decisions for the state’seconomy.”

If Scott is re-elected, Lopez-Cantera saidresidents can expect another $1 million intax cuts, and another $120 million assessedthrough cellphone usage.

Lopez-Cantera assumed the lieutenantgovernor’s office in February following theresignation of Jennifer Carroll, Crist’s origi-nal running mate in 2010. She resigned lastyear after she was questioned about her al-leged involvement in pushing moneytoward Internet cafes, which some say arefronts for illegal gambling in the state.

“I talk to the governor all the time aboutthe turnaround here in the state,” Lopez-Cantera said. “I’ve only been here for eight

months, but I get to take credit for all hishard work. This is the hardest-working gov-ernor that I have ever seen, and I servedwith three governors.”

chamber members already contribute a lotthroughout the years, especially throughsponsorship. We wanted to find a way to dothis without having to pass around the hat.”

When people visit the newly designed

office, it might be hard to tell the building is60 years old. Originally a Bell Telephonebuilding, the chamber office is in the heartof Zephyrhills’ main street — and its history.

The Woman’s Club building is just acrossthe street, its stone façade gracing FifthAvenue for decades, while the Jeffries House— home of the founder of Zephyrhills —

sits next door to it. The entire stretch of Fifth Avenue, in-

cluding the businesses along it, are part of aCommunity Redevelopment Agency dis-trict, where future tax revenues collectedthere will be returned to that districtthrough various economic development im-provements.

“For us, the scope is not just member-ship-based, but this is a community-centricchamber of commerce,” Mikkelsen said. “Notonly are we servicing our members and thepublic at large, but we are working veryclosely with other groups on formulas thatwill support our existing businesses, and thekind of businesses we can attract here.”

By Helene RubensteinGrand Horizons

On Aug. 14, we had a full dayplanned as we had reservationsfor the Fort Hays Chuck Wagonand Dinner Show. It consisted of anine-hour narrated tour, plus twomeals and a show.

We started at 7:30 with a break-fast of pancakes at the ChuckWagon. We then boarded thecoach with stops and a narrationat Mount Rushmore Memorial. This is quite a site, and we sawvideos of the work that went intothis great monument. We wereable to take a walk to view MountRushmore up close. It was a sightthat we won’t forget. The entiremonument was created in granite.

We went back to the bus and went tothe following — Lincoln Borglum Museumat the Mount Rushmore site, Pigtail Bridges, and scenic tunnels. The scenic tunnels werea real treat. From these tunnels we could ac-tually get a beautiful picture of MountRushmore that looked framed. The tunnelswere actually built with this in mind.

The bus then took us to see the CrazyHorse Memorial. This is a work in progressand was started on June 3, 1948. It is theworld’s largest sculptural undertaking bycarving a memorial Lakota leader, CrazyHorse.

The 1948 dedication blast took off just 10tons, but millions of tons have been removedsince. Back to the bus, and we passed bySylvan Lake and eventually arrived at CusterState Park.

In Custer State Park, buffalos have theright of way. The massive beasts freely roamthe parks thousands of acres, along with elk, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, coyotes and many other wildlife species.

The towering pines sheltering the road-way, the swift flowing creeks with their clearsparkled waters, the massive cliffs and rock

ridges, is nature at its best.Custer State Park covers 71,000 acres in

South Dakota’s Black Hills. In 1913, the parkwas created, but in 1919 the reserve be-came known as Custer State Park.

We arrived back at Fort Hays at 5:30 p.m.,to browse around the different pictures, props and movies. Then we enjoyed a ChuckWagon supper and a musical variety show. The show had loads of toe-tapping foot-stomping, belly-shaking laughter and more.

The following day we went on theWildlife Loop Road as we were quite anx-ious to see more wildlife. This road twistsand turns its way through the prairie andpine-studded hills that harbor many of thepark’s wildlife species.

Now, let me ask you a question. Do youlike trains? If you do, then let me tell youabout the state railroad museum where wewent. At the South Dakota Railroad Museumthey had a 70-foot mural of the history ofSouth Dakota and American railroad history.A very nice and informative video also wasthere for our viewing. There were antiquetools and equipment, plus scale modeltrains.

Off to Four Mile Old West Town. This was

featured in two parts. The first part had uswalking through an old west town that in-cluded many features such as a newspaperoffice, a sheriff’s office, a saloon which haddisplays of women sitting on the bar, an oldschool house, the blacksmith, an ice compa-ny, a sweet shop, jeweler, a doctors officeand more. It was a complete town withmany shops.

There was also a cemetery of the town’smost notable citizens.

All the buildings had artifacts from theturn of the century, while the jail had theoriginal furnishings from long ago. The jailwas built around the time South Dakota wasknown as part of the Dakota Territory. Theold wooden door showed the carving of anescaped prisoner.

The second part of Four Mile Old WestTown was a one-hour melodrama where theaudience interacts with Old West characters. The entire performance was very good andthe audience was laughing and enjoyingthemselves.

Late in the morning on Saturday, wewent back to the 1880 train and took thetrain ride. Here we got to see the Black Hillsof South Dakota by rail. We experienced ahistoric, breathtakingly scenic, relaxing vin-tage train ride. This was a two-hour ride anda 20-mile round trip to Keystone.

While we saw much scenery, we alsosaw the vistas of Harney Peak, which is thehighest point between the Swiss Alps andthe Rocky Mountains.

Later in the afternoon, we went to theCircle B ranch and enjoyed watching the lit-tle ones trying to rope a steer (fake ofcourse) and ride a pony, and we also got tosee many horses. There was a shootout andafter this, we entered the Chuck Wagon hallfor dinner and a show. It is here that westepped back in time and enjoyed anevening of Western hospitality and familyentertainment.
