Principal’s Update: It was a great week to celebrate academics. With the Nobel Prize winners announced along with

the Geography Bee winner, it is easy to see why this school is fantastic! Our students really shine

and know their stuff…

I have been reminding students on the morning announcements they are all starting this semester

with perfect scores- When they started up the week, they all had everything turned in that was

due…which was nothing because we are starting fresh. I like to remind students it is much easier

to keep an A than it is to chase it all semester long. Please check with your students to be sure they

are completing their work and TURNING IT IN! (Yes, they do forget to turn in completed work!).

Also, please reinforce the idea I have been expressing that if their teachers offer a retake of a test

or assignment, students should take advantage of it! There are many ways to succeed.

Around School:

Our Schoolwide Geography Bee took place on Thursday. The winner goes on to compete at

the state level. Parents are invited to attend on Wednesday starting during 3rd period 10:15-

12:00 in the MPR. Please check in at the office before attending. Congratulations to Bryan

Elks Hoop Shoot County Champions Thank you to all finalists who showed up to compete

in the Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw County Championships last Saturday at Cuesta College!

And the county winners were…...

12 year old boys: Joe Simard 3rd place

12 year old girls: Maddy Baird 3rd place

13 year old girls: Tori Killian 2nd place

Our Lancers were well represented and did great! Way to represent us Lancers! :)

The 8th grade girls basketball team won the Mesa Middle School tournament this past

weekend. The girls had to beat a very good Judkins team to make it to the finals. They then

won their next two games and met Judkins in the finals. Our Lancers fought from behind to

finally beat Judkins by 3 points in the last minute of the game!

Nobel Prize Finals Congratulations to Wesley Weisenberger, Jason Lucero, and Connor Borges for being chosen as

this year’s LAMS Nobel Prize winners. Their presentation on Wi-fi Attenuation was informative,

entertaining and left many in the audience counting the layers of drywall between their router and

their receiver! Their names will be added to our perpetual plaque in the front office.

The judges’ decision was not easy, however, as we saw 11 outstanding presentations on Friday. All

who attended had a great time learning about everything from how our brains interpret optical

illusions to how graphene may change the world. We are proud to have so many great scholars in

our midst!

Student Recognition Lunch!

PTA NEWS Just a reminder that our Flapjack Fundraiser originally scheduled for tomorrow

Learn to GOLF! Walk on over to Laguna Lake Golf Course and join the junior golf program offered to middle

school students. Clubs are provided for lessons, or bring your own. Beginners and intermediate

levels.The course will teach the FUNdamentals, course play, etiquette, a few rules and much more.

Taught by former Director of Junior Golf in Sweden.

SLO YOUTH BASEBALL REGISTRATION! For more than 60 years, San Luis Obispo Youth Baseball has been bringing the joy of America’s

Pastime to our local youth. SLO Youth Baseball is the oldest non-profit local youth sports

organization in the county and registration has begun for the 2016 season. SLO Youth Baseball

serves children from 5-12 with 4 different divisions depending on age and ability. The cost is $125

($90 for ages 5-8 in the Collegiate division). Scholarships are available. To register, go to

Tech Trek Were you once that young person with a passion for Science, Math and/or invention? Help fuel that love by donating to Tech Trek. The camp, sponsored by American Association for University Women (AAUW), sends select, motivated females to a week-long camp at UC Santa Barbara in the summer time. They are able to explore the world of coding, forensics, experiments, inventions and more. The cost is $900 per camper, however donations of any amount are appreciated. A check of any amount can be mailed to my Tech Trek co-chair Susan Updegrove at 1307 Kentwood in San Luis Obispo, California 93401. The check should be made out to AAUW with "Tech Trek" written in the memo line. The donation is indeed tax deductible.

The donations will benefit, very specifically, seventh grade females from Laguna Middle School in San Luis

Obispo. The enthusiastic, young scholars will be selected by their Laguna Middle School Science teachers.

I love it when our middle school students step up to help each other! Just this morning I observed

library and another helping with the formatting of a Google doc. And, I cannot forget to mention

Anthony who paused to hold the door open as students poured out of the library after lunch. Thank

Instructional Materials Review Committee Seeks Parent Input

San Luis Coastal Unified School District has formed an Instructional Materials Adoption Panel

(IMAP) to review sixth-eighth grade mathematics textbooks for possible adoption. The committee

is requesting community input in this process. Interested parents and community members are

invited to visit San Luis Coastal Unified School District Office, room F3 during regular business

hours to review math textbooks and complete a School Community Evaluation forms. Textbooks

and materials will be on display from January 15-February 29, 2016. We encourage you to

participate and value your input. All completed School Community Evaluations will be reviewed by

the IMAP prior to making a recommendation to our School

El Distrito Escolar Unificado Costero de San Luis ha formado un Panel sobre la Adopción de

Materiales Instructivos (IMAP) para repasar libros de texto para sus posibles adopciones para la

matemática del sexto a octavo grados. El comité está pidiendo contribución de la comunidad en

City Farm Our Global Family Village Event Cancelled

The good news is that we are getting plenty of rain this week, including Friday and Saturday. The bad

news is that the event at City Farm Our Global Family Village this Saturday, January 23rd. The land is

so saturated that it is nearly impossible to gain access to the farmland. (Again good news and bad

news!) The Worm Tea application will reschedule in a couple of months.
