Another year another successful SigEp presence at the Rider Reunion Weekend event This year over 20 SigEps gathered for what has become the annual Wiffle

Ball game transitioning from the old-school softball game

Wiffle Ball was held behind Sweigart Hall and the Moore Library where benches and shade provided a delightful ambience for brotherly love and some athletic competi-tion Frank Romanorsquos team shot ahead to an early lead through several innings led by Chris Greene and Jason Kanterman but opposing captain Kevin Whiteheadrsquos team came back to win the friendly matchup with help from Sean Feddema and Adam Brooks in particular Kevin was selected by the AVC as this yearrsquos MVP

In addition to Wiffle Ball the majority of those present earlier in the day also made it over to the big tent Garden Party hosted by the University Open bar and great com-pany ruled supreme providing an awesome time for all who attended

Please visit the AVC website for more pictures and thanks to Chris Manning and Tony Whalen for putting that together

We look forward to seeing you in November for Home-coming

Celebrating milestones is a part of our purpose in life to mark the passage of time and commemorate events like the end of a

school year your birthday an anniversary the 4th of July

Our April 2nd Rider SigEp Foundersrsquo Day Event and Alumni Volunteer Corporation (AVC) Meeting marked our founding of our NJ Zeta Chapter in a fun and social way at the local watering hole Killarneyrsquos Publick House in Hamilton NJ

The event was well attended by Brothers throughout the ages with many local Brothers attending also to watch basketball

It was hard to hear everyone on the phone as the venue filled up but we had another

productive meeting showcasing our new alumni website sigepnjzavccom designed and donated by the illustrious Wright Seneres 13 who also is editor-in-chief of The Lantern our regular alumni news in an attractive online format and updates on Carlson Leadership Academy which was well attended by under-grads and alumni alike

Killarneyrsquos was a good venue a good time and was a convivial social setting with various groups of alumni coming and going in peace love and harmony

Debt Buyers A Scourge of Our TimesNearly every one reading this has been in debt or will be at

some point for a variety of reasons It is therefore import-ant to know how this slimy business operates Why does it

matter Because knowing the debt buyerrsquos game enables you to beat them nearly every time In three years and dozens of cases no debt buyer has gotten a dime out of one of my cli-ents Now the usual disclaimer that this should not be consid-ered legal advice but rather is an overview to make you aware of this problem in case it becomes relevant to you or someone you know If you get into a legal problem contact a lawyer if you donrsquot know what to do (even if you think you do you still should probably contact one)

A debt buyer is not the original creditor from whom you borrowed money or whose credit card you used but rather someone who bought your debt They buy the right to collect on the debt for pennies on the dollar and take as much care as you would expect for that price Up until this point there is nothing unusual or unethical about what they are doing but it gets better

Debt buyers usually get next to no information or supporting documentation along with their purchase of your debt No card member agreement little to no account statements and no proof that they actually bought your account This is big because they buy them in huge lots and rarely can prove which accounts were in those lots They also happily buy debts that are defective or past the statute of limitations In New Jersey thatrsquos a debt that is more than six years old or four in Penn-sylvania They canrsquot even imply that they will sue you over this so-called ldquozombie debtrdquo but that doesnrsquot stop them from tricking you into thinking you have to pay them If you pay them a single dollar on the debt it restarts the statute of lim-itations and then they can sue you again Be extremely careful about agreeing to pay anything on old debts Payment plans are not always your friend

When it comes to lawsuits their game is to file as many as possible and hope you donrsquot fight them One popular debt collection mill testified that their attorneys spend less than five seconds on each complaint (prepared by God-knows-who) These boiler plate complaints are almost always facially defective easily beaten and unethical I literally have a stock set of objections to each company because they donrsquot change anything from complaint to complaint Most of these lawsuits canrsquot even show that they own the debt theyrsquore suing you for How then is this an effective business model you might ask They pay so little for the debts that if they can convince 1 in a 100 to pay or not fight the case they make money They prey on the fact that people donrsquot understand the rules or wonrsquot

Brandon Copeland 158 is a staff attorney at MidPenn Legal Services He is responsi-ble for all stages of client representation in a variety of areas in law including mortgage foreclosure landlord-tenant consumer law (credit card defense repossessions sheriff sale defense and utility terminations) unemployment compensation protection from abuse custody and other areas as needed

fight the case Those too overwhelmed or ignorant of the system get taken advantage of over and over again This is allowed to contin-ue because debt buyers have money and those they target donrsquot so there is no regulation of this industry

So what should you do if you have to deal with these people Identify who is contacting you If it is an original creditor they will probably be able to prove what you owe and you will lose (assuming you actually owe it) Talk to a

lawyer before you agree to pay anything The debt may not be enforceable If you are sued do not ignore it because legal problems donrsquot go away and the deadlines are not negotiable Fight If you put up a fight most of these com-panies will run and hide Even if they do keep fighting most of them wonrsquot be able to prove anything They bear the burden to prove every element of their case so concede nothing and hold them to that burden

productive meeting showcasing our new alumni website sigepnjzavccom designed and donated by the illustrious Wright Seneres 13 who also is editor-in-chief of The Lantern our regular alumni news in an attractive online format and updates on Carlson Leadership Academy which was well attended by under-grads and alumni alike

When it comes to lawsuits their game is to file as many as possible and hope you donrsquot fight them One popular debt collection mill testified that their attorneys spend less than five seconds on each complaint (prepared by God-knows-who) These boiler plate complaints are almost always facially defective easily beaten and unethical I literally have a stock set of objections to each company because they donrsquot change anything from complaint to complaint Most of these lawsuits canrsquot even show that they own the debt theyrsquore suing you for How then is this an effective business model you might ask They pay so little for the debts that if they can convince 1 in a 100 to pay or not fight the case they make money They prey on the fact that people donrsquot understand the rules or wonrsquot

fight the case Those too overwhelmed or ignorant of the system get taken advantage of over and over again This is allowed to contin-ue because debt buyers have money and those they target donrsquot so there is no regulation of this industry
