His vast and varied repertoire includes the east coast blues traditions, old-time white hillbilly music, medicine show entertainment tunes and ragtime. MICHAEl ROACH, Guilill Michael Roach has had years of experience organizing concerts, directing festivals and conducting workshops. Upon moving to Britain in 1995, he has travelled extensively for the visiting artist- in·the·school programs throughout Europe. With three CD albums to his credit, the latest release Good News Blues, Michael has firmly established himself within traditional music circles. His class is for beginners and intermediate guitarists. He will teach basic chord progressions, rhythm, and playing alternating bass patterns in country blues. MICHEL LELONG, GUitill Michel Lelong, from Tours (France), started playing guitar at the age of 13 after hearing a recording by John Jackson. He was influenced by his older brothers who were ail fond of American tradition al music. ln 1996, the Paris music publisher "editions Guitar Connection" released the first of Michel's IWO educational videos on Country and Blues Styles. Michellater released a country blues guitar method book of 75 pages with CD where a large range of techniques is explained in;detail. For Blues Week, Michel will teach beginner to intermediate students focusing on alternating bass fingerpicking styles. JOHN MILLER, Guilill John Miller was inspired to take up the Country Blues guitar after seeing Mississippi John Hurt at the 1963 Philadelphia Folk Festival. He taught himself to play guitar by listening to records and recorded his first album in 1973. Since that time he has come to be recognised as one of the foremosl authorilies on country blues guitar. He has recently released 3 instructional videos for Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop focusing on the music of Furry Lewis, Bo Carter, and Robert Wilkens. John's class will focus on learning country blues guitar by ear. This will provide students with the tools needed to figure out the songs you would most like to learn from recorded sources. LOUISIANNA RED, Guilill Louisiana Red is one of the artists that were active during the formative years of blues music. Born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in a career spanning Over half a century, - Louisiana Red not only plays the Blues, he lives it through his guitar and his singing. When Red performs, the songs are often only a launching pad for expressing his immediate feelings in the almost lost tradition of spontaneous composition that goes back to the original Delta Blues artists. ln 1983, he won a W.C. Handy Award for Best Tradilional Blues Artist. If you ask Red about his past successes, he would much rather talk about his latest CD project, a new song or a new guitar lick. Red's slide class is for intermediate to advanced students. MICHAEL MESSER, Guilill Michael Messer is a sOde guitar master. His obsessive appetite for knowledge of the art is virtually unequalled. He has an outstanding reputation amongst musicians and generally people regarded to be 'in the know', without ever having had the proper support necessary to introduce his music to a wider audience until he signed to Catfish Records and released the highly acclaimed album, King Guitar, last year. Newtone Strings in conjunction with National Resophonic Guitars have a Michael Messer brand specifically made for the National steel guitar, which reflects the esteem in which he is held. For Blues Week, Michael will conduct a 'master class' on bottleneck styles for beginner to advanced students. PHIL WIGGINS, HillmOnicii Blues Week welcomes the return of Phil Wiggins, from Washington, DC. He is the leading practitioner of the east coast country blues style. A creative songwriter and harmonica virtuoso, he forms haIf of the great partnership, Cephas & Wiggins. ln 1987, they won two W.C. Handy Awards from the Memphis Blues Foundation, Best Traditional Album of the Year and Blues Entertainers of the Year. Now on Alligator Records, Cephas & Wiggins have been together for 25 years and they are still in demand. Phil's class will focus on harmonica techniques of the east-enast country blues style.
