Howard G. AdamsH.G. Adams & Associates Inc.

Howard G. Adams is Founder and President of H.G. Adams & Associates, Inc., aGA based consulting company that provides human development services andproducts to educational, governmental, and industrial organizations. He is a leadingexpert on mentoring and mentorship development and has consulted extensivelyon mentoring as an effective strategy for professional, educational, and personaldevelopment. Dr. Adams has spoken at over 500 colleges and universities, andnational conferences, and conducted training for a number of fortune 500companies. In 1989, President Reagan appointed Dr. Adams to the U.S.Congressional Task Force on Women, Minorities and the Handicapped in Science& Technology. In 1996, President Clinton awarded Dr. Adams the PresidentialAward for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. In1999, Black Issues in Higher Education named Dr. Adams “20th CenturyOutstanding Educator”. John N. AustinDelaware State University

John Austin is Professor in the Department of Social Work and serves in the capacityof Director of the Office of Sponsored Programs at Delaware State University. Inaddition to facilitating the acquisition and management of grant and contract funds,Dr. Austin’s office is responsible for the University’s oversight committees on bothhuman subjects and animal care. Dr. Austin’s specialty in his chosen area of socialwork is macro-practice—primarily in the areas of health and prevention withcommunity and community development as the foundation. Dr. Austin has recentlycompleted a major community study of a low-income community in thesouthernmost county of Delaware. His leadership initiative led Delaware StateUniversity to establish and build the first community center in a low/moderateincome community in Dover, Delaware. He has been successful in acquiring fundsfrom the US Department of Housing and Urban Development to providefurnishings for the community center, to provide pre-and post-homeownershipcounseling and rehabilitation of housing to code in this community. In addition,the funds have also supported training for those residents desiring to start theirown businesses and providing support for family and youth programs—particularlyin the area of computer literacy.

Karen BallThe Leadership Alliance

Karen Ball is Manager of Finance and Administration for the Leadership Allianceexecutive office and organizes the annual Leadership Alliance National Symposium.Prior to joining the Alliance executive office staff in 2004, she served as assistantto the director of Brown University’s Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity inAmerica. Karen has held a variety of administrative positions at Brown since 1990,including assistant to the Senior Vice President for Academic Outreach andAffiliated Programs, and coordinator of the Coalition of Essential Schools RegionalCenters Project. Karen has a B.S. in Psychology from Oberlin College.

Anika BissahoyoThe Leadership Alliance

Anika Bissahoyo recently received her Ph.D. in Toxicology at the University ofNorth Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Bissahoyo received her B.S. degree inBiochemistry from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County where she was aMeyerhoff Scholar. Her dissertation work focused on characterizing susceptibilitydifferences in gene expression and tumor development of mice exposed to thecolon carcinogen, Azoxymethane. She currently serves as Scientific ProgramAnalyst at the Leadership Alliance, assisting with writing of grant proposals andpublications as well as providing staff support for various special initiatives andpipeline transitions at the post-doctoral and faculty levels. After working with theLeadership Alliance for a year, she plans to pursue post-doctoral training in cancerpathology and toxicogenomics.

Roi C. Blackwell is the Special Project Assistant at Howard University, Office ofthe Provost. Blackwell serves as the Howard University Leadership Alliance Liaisonwith Dr. Alvin Thornton (Associate Provost) Coordinator. She works as a studentcase researcher and liaison, special event planner and performs benchmark researchand data analysis. Ms. Blackwell plans events and speakers for special event suchas Howard University Leadership Alliance Summer program SR-EIP and HowardUniversity Faculty Orientation. Travis D. BoyceOhio University

Travis D. Boyce is Graduate Associate for Multicultural Recruitment and a secondyear doctoral student in the Cultural Studies program at Ohio University. He hasserved as graduate teaching assistant for the History Department at Ohio Universityas well as Graduate Associate for the Office of Student Activities. He was a 2001Leadership Alliance Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP) fellowat Yale University under the direction of Dr. Liza Cariaga-Lo. Mr. Boyce’s researchis on African American educational pedagogy and history during the twentiethcentury. Prior to beginning his doctoral work, he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degreein History, graduating “summa cum laude” from Claflin University in 2002 and aMaster of Arts in History from Ohio University in 2004. He holds membershipsin the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, NationalCouncil for Black Studies, Pi Gamma Mu International Social Science HonorSociety and other professional organizations.

Liza Cariaga-LoYale University

Liza Cariaga-Lo is Assistant Dean at the Yale Graduate School of Arts & Sciences andthe Director of the Office for Diversity and Equal Opportunity, as well as ClinicalProfessor, Child Study Center at Yale School of Medicine. She received her master’sand doctorate in Education and Developmental Psychology from Harvard University.Besides teaching courses related to minority health and developmental psychology,Dr. Cariaga-Lo has also taught African American Studies and Asian American Studiescourses and consults widely on cultural diversity and multicultural education issues.Her areas of research include education program evaluation, minority studentdevelopment, ethnic minority health care, and public policy affecting children andfamilies. She has just completed work on a book about the identity development ofAsian Americans and is working on a children’s book about growing up in amulticultural environment.

Juan J. CarmonaHarvard Medical School

Juan is entering his third year of graduate study in the Division of Medical Sciencesat Harvard Medical School, where he is a Howard Hughes Predoctoral Follow. Hisresearch interests are in the molecular basis of aging, which drew Juan to the world-renowned laboratory of Dr. David Sinclair. In 2003, Juan graduated summa cum laudefrom Auburn University and was selected for the prestigious USA Today All-USACollege Academic First Team. While at Auburn, Juan served as president of threehonor societies, was a teaching assistant in biology, and played violin in the Auburn-Community Orchestra. Since college, Juan has been active in biomedical research. Atwo-time Barry M. Goldwater Scholar, Juan participated in research programs atPrinceton University and at the Summer Honors Undergraduate Research Programat the Harvard Medical School. Among his awards, he was 1st Place Presenter inCellular Biology at the 2002 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for MinorityStudents, and he received the Comer Medal for Excellence, given to the top graduatingsenior at Auburn. Juan plans to pursue a biomedical research career.

Mary CroweXavier University

Mary Crowe is Director of Xavier University of Louisiana’s Center for UndergraduateResearch. After obtaining her PhD from Northern Illinois University in Ecology, Dr.Crowe began a tenure track position at Coastal Carolina University, Conway, SC.During the nine years she was at CCU she involved numerous undergraduate studentsin her research on the behavior of ghost and fiddler crabs. Dr. Crowe has been atXavier for just one year and is enjoying working with faculty and students across alldisciplines discover the joys, trials and tribulations of undergraduate research.

Françoise FreyreWeill Graduate School of Medical Sciences

Françoise Freyre is Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at the Joan and Sanford I.Weill Graduate School of Medical Sciences. Ms. Freyre joined the Weill GraduateSchool in 1993 as the Administrative Manager, having previously worked for theWeill Medical College in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy and theDepartment of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Over the past ten years, Ms. Freyre hasadministered a summer program for students traditionally underrepresented inthe sciences. Francoise Freyre received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology/Education from Hunter College of the City University of New York and a Master ofArts degree in Higher Education Administration from New York University.

Dr. Michael S. GainesUniversity of Miami

Michael Gaines is Professor of Biology and Assistant Provost for UndergraduateResearch and Community Outreach at the University of Miami. He teaches coursesin introductory biology, genetics and research design at the undergraduate level.Dr. Gaines is director of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute UndergraduateEducation Program. The major goal of the program is to increase the number ofdisadvantaged students in biomedical research careers. He also directs an NIHBridge Program between the University of Miami and Miami-Dade College. Itsaim is to increase the number of community college students who areunderrepresented minorities in the sciences transferring to research universitiesand completing baccalaureate degrees in biomedical fields. Dr. Gaines has beenrecognized as an outstanding teacher. He has won every major teaching award atthe University of Miami, including a prestigious university wide Excellence inTeaching Award. Dr. Gaines’ research interests are focused on the ecologicalgenetics of endangered small mammal species in South Florida. The NationalPark Service and the U.S. Geological Service are supporting his current research.

Sharon GambleColumbia University

Sharon Gamble is Director of Minority Affairs and Special Programs at ColumbiaUniversity. She is responsible for developing and directing programs to increasethe number of doctoral candidates at the Graduate School from racial, ethnic andgender groups currently underrepresented. One of the programs she coordinatesis the GSAS/Leadership Alliance Summer Research Program (SRP), which allowsstudents to conduct independent research with Columbia faculty for eight weeksduring the summer. Ms. Gamble works closely with faculty and departments torecruit and retain underrepresented doctoral students for GSAS programs. Shealso administers several fellowship programs that support the Graduate School’srecruitment and retention goals. Ms. Gamble received her baccalaureate from BardCollege and a Master of Arts in English from The City College of New York.

John Fitzgerald GatesHarvard University

John Fitzgerald Gates is Associate Dean for Administration and Finance at HarvardCollege, the undergraduate division of Harvard University. Mr. Gates was SpecialAssistant to the President and the Provost, and Lecturer of Higher Education, atthe University of Vermont. He advised UVM’s executive leadership, oversaw theDiversity and Equity unit and University Events, participated on the MasterPlanning Counsel, and represented the University to its publics. For nearly a decadeprior, Gates served New York University in numerous capacities, including asExecutive Director of Global Operations with oversight of NYU’s campuses in GreatBritain, Italy, the Czech Republic and Argentina. He also served NYU as AssistantProvost, Associate Director of the Africana Studies Program and The Institute ofAfrican-American Affairs, and Associate Director of the Faculty Resource Network.He is a Fellow of the British-American Project, National Moderator for the AnnualBiomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS), and has servedon numerous organizational boards. Gates holds a Bachelor of Arts degree inEnglish from Morehouse College, a Master of Arts degree in Higher EducationAdministration from New York University, and soon will complete his Ph.D. inorganizational leadership at the University of London.

Kay Johnson GrahamNational Institutes of Health

Ms. Kay Johnson Graham is Senior EEO Specialist for the National Institutes ofHealth (NIH) under the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity Management.She recently ended her position as Equal Employment Opportunity Officer andManager of the Minority Outreach and Student Research Training Program fortwo sub-agencies at the NIH in the Department of Health and Human Services(DHHS). Ms. Graham’s eighteen-year experience with the NIH began when sheassumed the position as Biologist in the Laboratory of Experimental Carcinogenesis.Throughout her course at NIH, Ms. Graham has also served as the chairperson ofseveral minority health projects addressing strategies to combat thedisproportionate burden of morbidity and mortality rates that minority anddisadvantaged populations face. Her most known work involves facilitating healthseminars and fairs by coordinating with community settings, minority and majorityhealth care settings, and medical and nursing personnel to promote healthylifestyles for all persons. Ms. Johnson Graham is also currently serving as managerof a student research training program entitled, “The Partnership Program”, whichpromotes research opportunities for students of color, women and persons withdisabilities. She received her B.S. degree from the University of Maryland at CollegePark. Currently, she is pursuing an advanced degree in Public Health.

Louise HainlineBrooklyn College

Louise Hainline is Dean of Research and Graduate Studies at Brooklyn College,and a Professor of Psychology whose research interests are in the development ofvision and problems of vision in early infancy. She also does research on howpeople learn in higher education. In addition to her formal administrative duties,she heads several of the College’s programs in support of minority student training,notably the Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) program and the ResearchInitiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) program. Her undergraduate degree,in psychology with honors, is from Brown University, and her M.A. and Ph.D.degrees in Developmental Psychology from Harvard University.

Robert L. HarrisCornell University

Robert L. Harris, Jr. is Vice Provost for Diversity and Faculty Development at CornellUniversity and Professor of African American History in the Africana Studies andResearch Center. As author of more than fifty published articles, book chapters,and dictionary entries, he has published the monograph Teaching African AmericanHistory for the American Historical Association (3rd edition, 2001) and is co-authorwith Rosalyn Terborg-Penn of the forthcoming Columbia Guide to AfricanAmerican History Since 1939 from Columbia University Press. Dr. Harris earnedhis B.A. degree and M.A. degree with honors from Roosevelt University and Ph.D.degree in History from Northwestern University. He has held postdoctoralfellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation, W.E.B. Du Bois Institute at HarvardUniversity, Ford Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities.

Mark HernandezUniversity of Colorado

Mark Hernandez is Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering at theUniversity of Colorado at Boulder and the faculty co-Director of the ColoradoDiversity Initiative. His research interfaces classical industrial hygiene and sanitaryengineering with recent advances in molecular biology. He is a recipient of aNational Science Foundation Early Career award, and the Water EnvironmentFoundation’s Canham Award. Dr. Hernandez teaches courses in environmentalengineering and applied environmental microbiology. He has been the leadacademic advisor for numerous graduate students from socioeconomicbackgrounds that are underrepresented in engineering.

George C. HillVanderbilt University

George C. Hill is the Levi Watkins, Junior, Professor of Medical Education in theDepartment of Microbiology and Immunology, and Associate Dean for Diversityat Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, TN. Dr. Hill is activelyresearching the electron transport systems in African trypanosomes and has heldNIH RO1 grants and trained Ph.D. students, M.S. students and post-doctoralfellows. Dr. Hill was recognized as a “Giant in Science” by the Quality Educationfor Minorities Network in 1999 for his commitment to motivating minority studentsto pursue the sciences. Dr. Hill has served NIH and NSF in many capacities, mostrecently as a member of the NIGMS/NIH Advisory Council. He is Vice-Presidentof the National Foundation of Infectious Diseases Board, and was elected to theInstitute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 1998. Dr. Hill hasheld a Professorship in Microbiology and served as Vice President for SponsoredResearch at Meharry Medical College, where he also served as Dean of the GraduateSchool, Director of the Division of Biomedical Sciences, and Associate VicePresident for International Programs. Dr. Hill obtained his B.S. from RutgersUniversity, M.S. from Howard University, and Ph.D. from NYU and was an NIHPostdoctoral Special Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge, Great Britain.He has also been a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and Fellowof the Academy of Microbiology.

Judy JacksonUniversity of Pennsylvania

Judy Jackson is Administrative Director for Biomedical Graduate Studies at theUniversity of Pennsylvania, where she has worked for 19 years. She oversees theday-to-day aspects of an interdisciplinary, university-wide doctoral program for 675students and 550 faculty, including student recruitment and admissions, studentrecords, course management, publicity, and special events, as well as a summerundergraduate research program and a post-baccalaureate research program. Shereceived her B.A. degree in Social Sciences from the University of Pennsylvania.

Alfred C. JohnsonNational Institutes of Health

Dr. Johnson is an Assistant Director in the National Institutes of Health Office ofIntramural research. He also serves as the Deputy Director of the Office of LoanRepayment and Scholarship (OLRS), and is an Adjunct Investigator in theLaboratory of Molecular Biology at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Hisresponsibilities include planning, directing and management of NIH loanrepayment and scholarship programs in conjunction with the Director, OLRS. Hehas been a researcher in the molecular biology of cancer arena for more than 19years and has trained numerous students, especially minority students, andpostdoctoral fellows in this area. As Deputy Director, he directs the NIHUndergraduate Scholarship Program for students from disadvantaged backgroundsand serves as a primary contact for the NIH intramural loan repayment programs.Dr. Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Albany State (GA)University and a doctorate degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University ofTennessee-Knoxville. His current research focus is on regulation of epidermalgrowth factor receptor gene expression in cancer cells.

Marcus JonesInstitute for Genomic Research

Marcus Jones is a post-doctoral fellow at The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR)in Rockville, MD, where he is investigating intracellular gene expression of thebacterial pathogens Bacillus anthracis and Francisella tularensis. Dr. Jones beganhis Ph.D. program in the fall of 2000 at the Sackler Institute at New York UniversitySchool of Medicine. While at NYU School of Medicine, Dr. Jones was co-Presidentof the Graduate Student Council, a student member of the Graduate AdmissionsCommittee at NYU, and a founding member of the Advisory Board to the Office ofDiversity Affairs. In May of 2005, he completed his Ph.D. in Microbiology andInfectious Diseases. Dr. Jones’ dissertation involved the study of quorum-sensingin the bacterial pathogen Bacillus anthracis, and the effect of inhibitors of quorum-sensing on Bacillus anthracis growth and gene expression. Dr. Jones graduatedfrom Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, LA in May of 2000where he earned a B.S. in the Biological Sciences concentrated in microbiology.

Wash A. Jones is Director of the University Scholars Program at Prairie View A&MUniversity, Prairie View, Texas. A native of St. Matthews, S.C., he attended theUniversity of Missouri-Columbia and received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoraldegrees from Texas A&M University in College Station, in agricultural journalism,educational administration and agricultural education, respectively. Barbara KahnLeadership Alliance

Barbara Kahn is the national coordinator of undergraduate research and graduateprograms for the Leadership Alliance. In this capacity, she coordinates the combinedapplication process for the nineteen undergraduate summer research sites,supervises the Alliance summer research program at Brown University, andoversees the Schering-Plough dissertation fellowships for the Alliance. Prior toher appointment with the Leadership Alliance, Ms. Kahn was part of theprofessional development team at Brown University’s Annenberg Institute forSchool Reform, a center promoting quality education for disadvantaged children,especially in urban communities. She came to Brown University from Chaffee &Partners, a public relations and advertising firm in Providence, RI, where sheworked for nine years. Ms. Kahn holds a B.S. in education from Boston University.

Edward KimLeadership Alliance

Edward Kim is the Technical Specialist at the Leadership Alliance, where he providesadministrative and technical support to the Executive Office staff. Mr. Kim helpscoordinate the planning and implementation of the Leadership AllianceSymposium and numerous other meetings during the course of the year. Craig T. Love is Senior Study Director at WESTAT, and also manages the data-coordinating center for the Center of Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) Dr. Loveis also developing the Federation of American Scientist (FAS) in Indian Country.Over the past 30 years, Dr. Love has conducted research and evaluation studies onNative American populations, AIDS prevention, and treatment and prevention ofdrug and alcohol abuse among prisoners and other criminal justice settingsincluding drug courts. He is currently participating in a study on barriers NativeAmericans face in gaining funding from Health and Human Services (HHS)programs. As Study Committee member the National Academy of Sciences project,he has studied the same issues in National Institute of Health (NIH) trainingprograms for students and faculty from underrepresented minorities in science.Dr. Craig Love received his B.S. in Psychology and M.A in Experimental Psychologyfrom the University of Kentucky, and his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology fromTemple University. He received a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Alcoholand Addiction Studies at Brown University and has held teaching positions atBrown University and at Harvard University.

Maaza MehzunDartmouth College

Maaza Mehzun is a graduate student at Dartmouth College currently pursuingher M.S. in Biochemical Engineering. A Chicago native, Maaza obtained her B.S.in Bioengineering from Dartmouth College in 2004. She participated in theLeadership Alliance program in 2003 where she worked with a Dartmouthengineering professor, Dr. Tillman Gerngross. Her research was in biotechnology,specifically protein expression in a novel bacterium. The relationship she developedwith this professor led her to pursue her M.S. degree in his lab following graduation.Maaza has also developed an interest in business and currently plans to pursue acareer in biotech/big pharma business.

William E. Moore is Professor of Chemistry at Southern University Baton Rouge.During the course of his 38-year career, Professor Moore has held the positions ofdepartment chair for six years and chief academic officer of three institutions for13 years. He has served as chair of an NIH study section, lectured at the PasteurInstitute in Paris, France and mentored more than 25 undergraduates who wenton to receive doctorate degrees. In 2001 he was one of fifty Americans selected toparticipate in the Project Kaleidoscope – Sigma Xi Roundtable on the Use ofTechnology in teaching Science and Mathematics in the 21st century. In 2004,Professor Moore was selected as on of the first seven persons to be honored by thePurdue University Chemistry Department as distinguished alumni. Subsequentto that honor, he was given a three-year appointment to the chemistry department’sadvisory board at Purdue University.Professor Moore holds a B. S. degree in chemistry from Southern University anda Ph. D in Biophysical Chemistry from Purdue University. He was the first AfricanAmerican to receive a Ph. D. in chemistry from this institution.

Joel OppenheimNew York University School of Medicine

Joel Oppenheim is Senior Associate Dean for Biomedical Sciences at NYU Schoolof Medicine, a position that oversees all student research (PhD, MD/PhD, theHonors Program in Medicine, and all summer programs) and postdoctoral training.He also serves as Director of NYU’s Sackler Institute of Graduate BiomedicalSciences, the largest PhD granting division of NYU’s Graduate School of Arts andSciences, and is active on the Medical School’s Academic Affairs, Curriculum,Housing, and Residential Life Committees. He is the founder and director of NYU’sSummer Undergraduate Research Program and is also responsible for recruitingstudents to all NYU School of Medicine programs. Dr. Oppenheim received hisB.S. degree in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin, his M.S. and Ph.D.degrees in Microbiology from Loyola University School of Medicine, and was aNIH Postdoctoral Fellow at NYU School of Medicine.

Roosevelt Ratliff, II is Director of the Leadership Development Center, UNCF/National Merit Scholarship Coordinator, and Leadership Alliance InstitutionalCoordinator. Since 1998, Dr. Ratliff has served as Professor, Assistant Vice Presidentfor Leadership Development and Research Facilitator for Claflin University,Orangeburg, South Carolina. Dr. Ratliff also serves as Co-Chair of the NationalEmerging Leaders Workshop (Roanoke, VA). For the Leadership AllianceConsortium, he serves on the Program Advisory and the Summer SymposiumPlanning Committees. David Redman is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Princeton University, aposition he has held since 1987. Prior to 1987, Dr. Redman was the AssistantDean of the Graduate School (Budget and Financial Planning, Student Affairs andHousing, and Foreign Students) and Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs for thehumanities and social sciences. Dr. Redman earned a B.A. in English from WilliamsCollege and a B.A. with honors in English from Worcester College at Oxford. Hereceived his Ph.D. in English Literature from Yale University.

Erica RiddleStanford University

Erica Riddle is a graduate student at Stanford University working in the laboratoryof Dr. Sheri Krams to investigate the biochemical pathways of cell death, orapoptosis, associated with liver transplant rejection. Erica’s dissertation projectproposes to block these cell death pathways using gene therapy, thereby prolongingliver transplant survival in their rat model of liver transplant rejection. Shecompleted her Bachelor of Science in Honors Biochemistry in May of 2000 at TheUniversity of Michigan where she participated in the Undergraduate ResearchOpportunity Program, conducting research on obesity and cardiovascular diseaserisk for two years. She also did honor’s thesis research in the pharmacologydepartment, studying the signaling pathways associated with adrenaline. Erica iscommitted to working with university administrators and policy makers to helpensure that graduate programs in biomedical sciences are attracting and trainingtop scientists from diverse backgrounds. Eventually, she would like to directgraduate education programs at agencies such at the American Association forthe Advancement of Science (AAAS), The National Science Foundation (NSF) orthe National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Pamela E. Scott-JohnsonMorgan State University

Pamela E. Scott-Johnson is Chair and Associate Professor in the Department ofPsychology at Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Scott-Johnson hastaught Introductory Psychology, Industrial/ Organizational Psychology, Theoriesof Learning and Behavior, Sensation and Perception, and Cognitive Psychology.Dr. Scott-Johnson’s research seeks to understand the spatial and temporalorganization(s) of the olfactory system and examine fear- and-anxiety- relatedbehaviors in the presence of the predatory and non- predatory odor stimuli. Dr.Scott-Johnson has been an active participant with the American PsychologicalAssociation Education and Science Directorates, Project Kaleidoscope / Facultyfor the 21st Century, and the Southeastern Psychological Association (Committeefor Equal Opportunities). Prior to her academic affiliations, Dr. Scott-Johnsonworked in the food industry as a senior research scientist examining the neural,physiological, and behavioral bases of taste and smell related to food products. David Slocum is an Associate Dean in Office of Academic and Student Life at theGraduate School of Arts and Science at New York University. He is the director ofNYU’s Summer Research and Early Identification Program (SR-EIP) in theHumanities and Social Sciences. Dr. Slocum’s research involves the history andsociology of media, with special interests in media violence, comparative andintercultural analysis, and interdisciplinary film history; he teaches in the CinemaStudies Department and Art & Public Policy Program at the Tisch School of theArts. Dr. Slocum is also the founding co-director of the Diversity Studies Programjointly offered by NYU and the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Cynthia Neal SpenceSpelman College

Cynthia Neal Spence is Director of the UNCF Mellon Programs. These programsprovide fellowships for students interested in becoming college professors in theareas of the humanities, physics, mathematics, sociology, anthropology and otherdisciplines employing philosophical or historical analysis. The primary goal of thePrograms is to increase the number of faculty of color. In addition, the UNCF/Mellon Programs provide fellowships for dissertation completion for facultymembers in selected disciplines and support domestic and international facultydevelopment initiatives. The UNCF/Mellon Programs are housed at SpelmanCollege. At Spelman College, Dr. Spence has served in the capacities of AssistantDean for Freshman Studies, Associate Academic Dean and Academic Dean from1985 to 2002. Dr. Spence’s teaching and research interests include sociology,criminology, law, and violence against women.

Laurel SouthardCornell University

Laurel Southard is Director of Undergraduate Research in Biology at CornellUniversity. She directs the Cornell Hughes Scholar Program, the LeadershipAlliance Summer Program, the Honors Program in Biology and anything elsethat sounds like fun! She grew up in the mountains of Northern New Mexicosurrounded by lots of animals, plants, and open skies. She was destined to be abiologist! Dr. Southard did her undergraduate work at the University of New Mexicoas a biology and art double major. The highlight of her time there was theundergraduate research she did with Dr. Alexander Kisch of the University of NewMexico School of Medicine. His belief in her unproven abilities inspired a lifelonglove of infectious disease and her recognition of the power of mentoring and facultysupport. Based on her work with him, she went to Tulane University to studyparasitology and tropical medicine. Finding the south a little too humid for herdesert rat physiology, she eventually found her way to Cornell University whereshe worked for many years before being accepted into the graduate program inBiochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology. She did her thesis work on retrovirusparticle formation in the laboratory of Dr. Volker Vogt. Several years later she wasnamed the Director of the Cornell Hughes Program.

Jocelyn SpraggHarvard University

Jocelyn Spragg is Faculty Director of Diversity Programs and Special AcademicResources in the Ph.D. programs office at Harvard Medical School. Prior to 1990,her research interests as a Harvard University faculty member included mediatorsof inflammatory reactions, biochemistry of the kallikrein systems, clottingmechanisms and related areas. She is an author of over 50 research papers. Since1990, her career interests have focused on career and academic counseling andthe development and administration of programs and curricula to encouragewomen and members of under-represented minority groups to consider careersin sciences. Dr. Spragg is the developer and director of the Summer HonorsUndergraduate Research Program and the faculty administrative advisor to theFour Direction Summer Research Program. She received a B.A. from SmithCollege, Ph.D. from Harvard University in Bacteriology and Immunology, andEd.M. in Academic Counseling Psychology from Boston University.

Susie Valaitis is Program Officer with the IGERT National Recruitment Office.IGERT is a program of the National Science Foundation, which provides fundingfor 125 interdisciplinary PhD programs in the STEM disciplines at 80 universitiesaround the country. The Recruitment Office works to broaden participation andincrease diversity in these programs by finding students whose interests andabilities match IGERT opportunities. Before joining IGERT, Susie was executivedirector of Medomak Valley Land Trust, a small nonprofit dedicated to landconservation in the Medomak River Valley.

Peter VelazquezNew York University School of Medicine

Peter Velazquez is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Skirball Institute of BiomolecularMedicine, at the New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Velazquez is also acouncil member on the Dean’s Council for Diversity at NYU School of Medicine,identifying issues and forming recommendations to help facilitate the success ofunderrepresented groups in biomedical research and medicine. Dr. Velazquezobtained his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, where heinvestigated lymphocyte development and function to understand mucosallymphocyte homeostasis and mechanisms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Catherine L. Valerie Petit WilsonLeadership Alliance

Valerie Petit Wilson is Executive Director of the Leadership Alliance and ClinicalProfessor of Community Health at Brown University. As of August 15, 2005 shewill also be Associate Dean of the Graduate School at Brown University. As ExecutiveDirector of the Alliance, she is responsible for leading the 31-institution consortiumdedicated to improving the participation of underrepresented students in graduateand Ph.D. programs and ultimately, into the professorate and leadership positionsin academic, public and private sectors. From 1998 to 2003, she was Deputy Director,Center for Bioenvironmental Health, and Clinical Professor of EnvironmentalHealth Sciences, Tulane University. Prior to these academic appointments, Wilsonheld senior-level positions as the National Academy of Sciences, and the US PublicHealth Service, Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Wilson istrained as a molecular biologist and has published research in molecularhematology and virology; however, her more recent intellectual interests have beenin the area of biomedical and environmental ethics. She lectures on K-12 scienceeducation issues, women in science and academic career paths for studentsunderrepresented in science and engineering fields. She is the recipient of severalawards from the Public Health Service, DHHS, citations from the Surgeon Generalof the U.S., and the National Academy of Sciences. Diedra WrightingHarvard University

Diedra Wrighting is a Ph.D. Candidate in Genetics at the Andrews Laboratory inBoston, MA where she is studying the relationship between two proteins HFE andhepcidin. Mutations in both the HAMP (hepcidin antimicrobial peptide) and HFEgenes cause Hereditary Hemochromatosis (HH), a prevalent iron overload disordercharacterized by chronic iron absorption, tissue iron accumulation and ultimateorgan dysfunction and failure. Diedra received her B.S. in Biology at HowardUniversity in 1997. Her immediate goals are to complete her doctoral studies andcontinue to a postdoctoral fellowship. She would eventually like to have her ownlaboratory where she can continue research that contributes to basic scientificknowledge and to the clinical treatment of disease.
