Is Innovation Nurtured in your RTO?

Innovation is more than another word for creativity or problem solving. Innovation can be

defined as a new idea; a new use for an old idea; or an idea that can be implemented and

adds value. So, innovation involves creative thought, but for an idea to be considered

innovative it needs to be usable and add value.

Innovation is essential to thrive in today’s environment of rapid change. There are many

ways that an RTO can nurture, support and manage innovation including:

investigating and finding new ways to deliver training, conduct assessment or manage

RTO functions

building new types of collaborative relationships with other organisations, businesses,

government and communities

embracing new technologies such as social media, online learning platforms,

gamification of learning

develop new courses to meet an emerging demand

deliver courses for new target audiences using innovative delivery models

develop strategic partnerships with other organisations or RTOs to access different

industries or take advantage of a new opportunity

Completing this Self-Assessment Tool can help you identify:

the extent to which your RTO demonstrates innovative behaviour and

your readiness to respond to new and emerging opportunities.

The Self-Assessment Tool

Instructions for Using the Tool

The tool has been built around Tina Seelig’s

Innovation Engine 1 This provides a useful

framework to consider how to create these types of

environments and encourage innovative practice.

The three categories listed around the outside of

the model describe the characteristics of an

innovative environment. These are habitat, resources and culture.

The middle 3 factors – imagination, knowledge & attitude are the elements of creativity and

innovation that we can each cultivate within ourselves to develop more capacity for

innovation and creativity.

1. Review the list of statements listed for each of the categories and factors from this model and make a judgement about your RTOs current position. Use the headings in the table to help you make this judgement. If you can’t answer, talk to your staff to canvass their opinions!

2. Identify areas where you need to improve or focus on.3. Plan how you will address each of the identified areas.

If you start this process and realise that you need help, please contact us at [email protected] or 0431 139 306 and we can provide consulting support.

We embrace new models of operating. We test new ways of delivering training and assessment in a careful and considered manner, learning and adapting as we test these new ways of working. There is a strong commitment to training and development of people across the entire RTO.People work well together across departmental boundaries. There is sufficient flexibility in our system for development to allow small 'fast track' projects to happen. We work well in teams across the RTO.We use feedback and other forms of measurement to help identify where and when we can improve our innovation management.Develop our capacity for imagination

We think ‘outside the box’

We find new ways to achieve results where the current methods aren’t working or where change is requiredWe provide reflection time for our staff to help them imagine and create! Our RTO regularly identify new courses, services and business processes before our competitorsDevelop ideas and knowledgeThinking outside the box is encouraged. We encourage all staff to adopt an open mind for new ideas and canvass a range of perspectives.

We draw on ideas, alternatives and a range of perspectives. We have a documented process for idea capture, assessment development and implementation. We have a structured process to trial new ideas and approaches. We have processes in place to help us implement new ideas effectively from initiation to launch. We have a portfolio of innovative ideas ranging from newly developed ideas to those that are about to launched in the RTO?Our RTO is good at capturing what we have learned so that we can make use of it.We have a supportive climate for new ideas so that people don't have to leave the organisation to make them happen.Adopt a positive and confident attitudeWe regularly introduce new courses or new ways of operatingWe have effective mechanisms for managing process change from idea through to successful implementationWe have a well-developed risk management strategy for new idea development and implementation so we can be confident of success at the time of launch. We look ahead in a structured way to try and imagine future threats and opportunities

We take time to review our projects to improve our future performance. We learn from our mistakesWe work closely with our stakeholders in exploring and developing new conceptsWe measure impacts and outcomes of our innovations to inform future practice.Continuous improvement and innovation is part of everyone’s job

Planning for innovation in your RTO:

Review your ratings and identify the key areas that you would like to address to build an

environment and culture that fosters innovation. You could choose to focus on areas that

you have rated in the following columns:

Column 5: This is not happening in our RTO or Column 1: Aspirational, we want to do this well or Column 2: Emerging, we’ve started but need to do this more.

Now set some goals related to each of the areas of focus using the table on the next page.
