Doing Good Quality ELT Research Prof Simon Borg

09.30-16.30hrsProf Simon Borg

What does ‘good quality’ ELT research look like and what steps can we take as researchers to maximize the quality of the work we do? These are the central questions that this workshop will focus on. We will break the research process down into three distinct components – planning, doing and reporting – and consider ways of enhancing the quality of each. By the end of the workshop (which will be suitable for novice and more experienced researchers) participants will be aware of the criteria against which the quality of ELT research can be defined and in a stronger position to plan, conduct and publish good quality ELT research themselves. Specific issues we will discuss are:

• The good researcher• Dimensions of research quality• Quality in planning research• Objectives and research questions• Research design• Quality in conducting research• Enhancing quality in data collection & analysis• Quality in reporting research• Criteria for assessing research quality

Reflections on how to be a highly effective teacher

In this talk we will take for granted that teachers need to be confident in their subject knowledge and skilled in the craft of teaching in order to achieve desired curriculum outcomes. Instead we will aim to explore the more intangible personal capacities, attitudes and beliefs that make for highly effective teachers who have a profound influence and make a long-lasting difference to the lives of their learners. We will consider the role of the teacher as educator in fast-changing social and technological times. We will also discuss a notion of professionalism that supports learners as citizens in both a local and global context. Among the areas we will investigate will be self-awareness, personal development, emotional intelligence and engaging with other people. There will also be opportunities to reflect on your own ideas about what it means for you to be a highly effective teacher in your context.

About CarolCarol Read has over 30 years’ experience in ELT as a teacher, teacher trainer, academic manager, materials writer and educational consultant. She has taught students of all ages, from very young children to adults. Upgrade! Demand High to Bring a Grammar Lesson Alive

How can every teacher get more out of routine coursebook grammar exercises? This lively and involving talk demonstrates really practical everyday techniques to get away from ritualised coursebook use, to help engineer a deep engagement with grammar and to make learning more visible, challenge students and nudge them to achieve more than they thought possible.

This session uses techniques associated with “Demand-High”, the proposal that contemporary teaching can be more active, interventionist and challenging. DH proposes that a teacher can be a “teacher” again.Demand high! Aim for upgrade!

Six reasons why language teachers should love lists

I love lists, and I think I’m not alone in this. To-do lists, top ten lists, shopping lists, best of lists, worst of lists, lists are everywhere - particularly so in the information age. In this lively and practical talk we’ll look at the popularity of lists and the different genres of lists. We’ll examine the linguistic features of lists. We’ll go over some of the most important lists in our field. And we’ll cover some practical activities you can do with lists in the language classroom. Think we can get through that list in our session?

About LindsayLindsay Clandfield is an award-winning writer, teacher, teacher trainer and international speaker in the field of English language teaching. He has written more than ten coursebooks and is the main author of the adult course Global (Macmillan). SATURDAY 25 OCTOBER

10.15hrs - Plenary 4 - Prof Simon Borg

Inspiring Teachers through Teacher Research

This talk examines how teacher research – inquiry that teachers do in their own classrooms – can inspire teachers to take charge of their professional development. Teacher research can also enhance teachers’ enthusiasm, confidence and sense of professionalism. And, most importantly, it can improve the quality of teachers’ work. I will first discuss some common misconceptions that ELT professionals have about the relevance of research to their work, then define what teacher research is and illustrate its value with examples from a range of international contexts. I will conclude with some observations about how ELT professionals can be supported in becoming teacher researchers. Through this talk my aim is to demonstrate that teacher research is a feasible and valuable professional development strategy that English language teachers can engage in and which can contribute to improvements in the quality of the educational experience they provide for their learners.

From monologue to dialogue

The teacher’s voice is the most valuable source of language input in the classroom. As we all know, however, it can be easy to overuse it. In this practical talk, we will focus on teacher-led storytelling as a means of preparing and developing our teacher talk. We will consider how a short narrative can be turned into a whole-class discussion with language learning opportunities along the way. In doing so, we will touch on teaching skills which are vital but often overlooked (teacher-to-student questions, presentation techniques, working with emergent language, etc.)

About JamieJamie Keddie is a teacher, trainer, writer and presenter who has shared his ideas with educators all over the world. His areas of interest include the use of visual materials and storytelling in the classroom. Jamie is the founder of Lessonstream.org, and the winner of a British Council ELTons award. He is also the author of Videotelling, a teachers’ resource ebook which is available at Videotelling.com.

Digital Literacies, Teachers And Learners

This talk examines how the traditional ‘three rs’ (reading, writing and arithmetic), long considered the cornerstones of basic literacy/numeracy, have changed as we advance into the digital age. We will discover what it means to be digitally literate today, explore the new types of literacy that have emerged alongside the advent of Web 2.0 and analyse why it is important to work with these literacies on a daily basis in our teaching.
