We will journey with the “Fourth Wise Man”, Artaban (Artie, for short) to Bethlehem as he goes in search of the newborn King of kings. Along the way, Artie is joined by an angel who helps him on his quest. During their journey, Artie and the angel meet some people in need, and Artie misses the birth of Jesus. Yet, he learns some important Biblical truths on the journey – including some of the most important Biblical truths ever!

Saturday, December 29th at 5:30pm Sunday, December 30th at 9:30am (note, no 8:15am worship this day)

No Worship or Community Supper Wednesday, January 2nd!

Every month throughout our congregation and our community, a ministry of visitation takes place. It may be in a hospital room, or to one of the many care facilities in our area, or perhaps to a person in their own home. Sometimes it is just to visit, often it will include a devotion, and for many the sacrament of Holy Communion is shared. There are a number of people at Christ the King who have discovered the joy of being one of those who visits others. On Sunday, January 20th there will be a meeting in the Fireside Room at 9:30am for all those who have been a part of CTK’s Visitation Ministry Team, to catch up and share some stories about how God is at work in this wonderful ministry. It is also an opportunity for anyone to come and inquire about becoming involved in some way. Perhaps you know of someone who would benefit from a regular visit from either the pastoral staff or from one of the Visitation Ministry Team members. Please come and sit down for an hour and be blessed by the news of this grace-filled ministry at Christ the King. Any questions can be directed to Pastor John at 345-5056, ext. 24.

The Call Process The ELCA churches use the call process to fill pastor positions for its churches. Other traditions like the Roman Catholics and Methodists pastors are assigned by the

local bishop. After the current pastor resigns or retires, the Synod office meets with the Church Council or Senior Pastor. An Interim Pastor is usually selected by the Council to help with the church and the call process. Call committees are set up by constitutional guidelines. At Christ the King, the Call Committee is to be seven members elected by the congregation. The election of the 7 occurred in December. They are: Ann Stewart, Carrie Kijenski, Travis Lupke, Matthew Birkmaier, Michael Much, Jeri Retzlaff, and Kathy Brozik. Our two alternates are Julie Hatleli and Beth Krusemark, with Shannon Sinning stepping in as our Council liaison.

The first task of the call process is to fill out the Ministry Site Profile of the church. The profile is a ‘snapshot’ of Christ the King Lutheran Church and the Mankato community. In this process is the discernment of what is God up to and calling CTK to do in God’s kingdom. This then helps to determine what skills that the new pastor needs to have.

After the Ministry Site profile is done by the Call Committee it is approved by the Church Council. The Site Profile is then sent to the South East MN. Synod office. The synod office staff will try and match candidates that fit the site profile. A list of candidates will be sent to the Call Committee. The Call Committee will review the list and interview candidates. The Call Committee shall recommend one person to the Associate Pastor position. Per the constitution, the Church Council will review the recommendations of the Call Committee and forward the approved candidate to the congregation for authorization to issue a letter of call. The congregation will have a special meeting to vote on the candidate.

If approved by the congregation, a letter of call is issued. The candidate has 30 days to respond to the call. If the

candidate is in a call, they must give a 30 day notice to their current congregation. Dates are established for ending the

Interim pastor and dates are set up for the start of the new pastor. What is hoped for and desired is that the Holy

Spirit to help, to lead, and to guide the whole call process. God knows who he would like to have as the new pastor of

CTK, but God won’t be sending an email to tell us. So we have a call process to help us select the new pastor.

Pastor Cheryl

New Prayer Article Series submitted by Pastor Donohue Sarff With Christ in the School of Prayer by Andrew Murray (from the Introduction – page 5)

“Of all the promises connected with the command, ‘Abide in Me,’ there is none higher, and none that sooner brings the confession, ‘Not that I have already attained or am already made perfect,’ than this: ‘If you abide in me, ask whatsoever you will, and it shall be done unto you.’ Power with God is the highest attainment of the life of full abiding. And of all the traits of a life Like Christ there is none higher and more glorious than the conformity to Him in the work that now engages Him without ceasing in the Father’s presence – His all-prevailing intercession. The more we abide in Him, and grow unto His likeness, will His priestly life work in us mightily, and our life become what His is, a life that ever pleads and prevails for humans.” (Note by Pastor Donohue Sarff: These are the first words in Andrew Murray’s book. There’s no big clue on what makes for great praying … other than, the life of healthy prayer begins with “abiding in God.” There will be no

prayer without that solid foundation!)

With stricter Hipaa privacy laws in place, we don’t always know who, from our membership is in the hospital. If you know you are going to be hospitalized and would like a pastor visit while there, please contact Amy in the church office. If you enter the hospital through the emergency room, you will need to contact us if you would like a visit.
