the legend of the leprechaun

The Legend of the Leprechaun If you’re going to try and catch a leprechaun, there are a few things you should know before getting started. Leprechauns are small, about two feet high. Pictures of leprechauns usually show that they are bearded men, but there’s no proof that they’re only males. Leprechauns like to be alone, and they usually live in wooded areas. They earn money by making shoes, which requires the use of tiny hammers. If you’re walking along in the forest on a quiet evening and hear a tiny tapping sound, it might be a leprechaun finishing a day’s work. Leprechauns must be honest. Part of the legend of the leprechaun is that each one is in charge of guarding a pot of gold. This gold has been well hidden. But if you are lucky enough to catch a leprechaun, ask him or her where you can find this gold. The leprechaun must tell the truth, and will want his freedom in exchange for the information. Leprechauns are smart and quick, and even though they must be honest, they can be tricky. The other part of the Legend of the Leprechaun is about how tricky they can be! A man caught a leprechaun and asked where his gold was hidden. The leprechaun had to tell the truth, and led the man to a bush under which the gold was buried. The man had to get a shovel so he could dig for the gold, and he tied a red piece of cloth to a branch of the bush so he would know where to return to start digging. He made the leprechaun promise not to remove the red cloth. When he got back with the shovel, he found that the leprechaun had tied a red piece of cloth to hundreds of other bushes, too! Finally, keep careful watch over your leprechaun. If you take your eyes off your leprechaun for even a second, he will vanish! _____________________ ©Kelly Wilson, 2010 Teaching Resource Center, www.trcabc.com
