The Legend of the DOGWOOD

There is a legend, that at the time of theCrucifixion the dogwood had been the size of theoak and other forest trees. So firm and strong wasthe tree that it was chosen as the timber for thecross. To be used thus for such a cruel purposegreatly distressed the tree, and Jesus, nailed uponit, sensed this, and in His gentle pity for all sorrowand suffering said to it:Because of your regret and pity for My suffering, never again shall the dogwood tree grow largeenough to be used as a cross. Henceforth it shallbe slender and bent and twisted and its blossomsshall be in the form of a cross . . . two long andtwo short petals. And in the center of the outeredge of each petal there will be nail prints, brownwith rust and stained with red, and in the centerof the flower will be a crown of thorns, and allwho see it will remember . . . that it was upon adogwood tree I was crucified and this tree shallnot be mutilated or destroyed, but cherished as areminder of My death upon the cross.
