    When the new princess is born,the court is excited that this is the child who will save them all from theevil force that threatens to vanquish the kingdom. The king asks his threefavorite aunts to be godmothers to his daughter, Elise. A fourth aunt,Malicia, who has harassed the king’s family for years, shows upuninvited at the christening, causing a scene which ends with deadlycurses. To protect the child, whom they call Rose, the three kindlygodmothers take her to live in a secluded forest cottage until after her16th birthday, when the curse will expire. Meanwhile, Malicia plots tofind the girl so the curse can be fulfilled. Malicia’s two thugs, Dagmarand Horace, eavesdrop on Prince Michael, who is in love with Rose, as,unknowingly, he directs Dagmar and Horace to the cottage. Through aslip of the tongue and Dagmar’s lies, the princess and her protectorsleave the safety of the forest and proceed to the king’s castle, a day tooearly to avoid the curse. The crazed and powerful Malicia arrives at thecastle making demands and threats, knowing that the time is right forfulfillment of the curse. Michael also arrives at the castle where hisnewfound love has fallen victim to Malicia’s curse and is sleeping in anisolated tower. In his search for Elise, Michael confronts Malicia. Shecurses him, but he overcomes the odds and finds his dear Elise asleep.Michael awakens Elise, proclaims his love, and together they overcomethe curse and fulfill the legend.

(KING starts to in ter rupt.) Please. I am sure the in vi ta -tion just got lost in the mail. Does n’t mat ter. I am herenow. I am so de lighted to be here.

    EVELYN. Yes. And we are just thrilled you are here.GERALDINE. Could n’t you wear some thing a lit tle more

    fes tive.MALICIA. For me, black is fes tive.QUEEN. Malicia, why must you cast your shadow on this

    joy ous day?MALICIA. Joy ous! You say that as if I don’t know what

    the word means.KING. You don’t. You al ways man age to cloud any thing

    happy. You have been giv ing my fam ily trou ble foryears.

    MALICIA. Years? You make me sound pos i tively an cient.(Crowd laughs.) Si lence. Or I shall turn your chil dreninto mice. (Crowd is si lent and shrinks from MALICIA.)

    GERALDINE. Malicia, please. We are here to cel e brate the child’s birth.

    EVELYN. And to be stow our gifts. So just, just…well, just be nice.

    MALICIA. I will surely try. (Stands aloof and alone.)KING (at tempt ing to re cover and gain con trol of the sit u a -

    GERALDINE (ap proach ing). Your Majesties. I love mylit tle grand niece more than I can say. I wish her all thehap pi ness in the world. As a sym bol of my gift I of ferthis golden heart. May this child love truly and rec og -nize true love.

    QUEEN & KING. Thank you. Thank you, dear AuntGeraldine.

    EVELYN. Queen Margarette, Rudy, I mean King. KingRudolph. Many bless ings on my grand niece. I pres ent to her this golden star, a sym bol of my gift of health andbeauty.

    KING (QUEEN nods thanks). Thank you, dear AuntEvelyn.

    EVELYN. Oh look, she’s asleep. Sleeping Beauty. (ToMALICIA.) You are next. Be have.

    MALICIA. Yes, I know. I even brought a baby gift.(Moving to ward the child she pro duces a crys taldagger.) It is a gift. A beau ti ful crys tal dagger. (Crowdgasps.)

    QUEEN. What kind of gift is that? A knife is no gift for achild.

    EVELYN. What is wrong with you? You should knowbetter than that.

    MALICIA. Fine! I will take back the pre cious crys taldagger. I will make a spe cial gift of it when she is older. How much older? How about when she reaches her six -teenth birth day. Yes. I will just hold onto it un til shereaches her six teenth birth day.

I give the child a haunt ing mel ody and Iprom ise you, Queen Margarette and King Rudolph, your in sults will be re warded by a curse. On the day ofElise’s six teenth birth day, she will prick her fin ger onthe spin dle of a spin ning wheel and she will die.

    ISABELLE. She will not die. She will not die. This is thelow est thing you have ever done. Your Majesties. Elisewill live. Here is my gift: a coun ter curse! The child will not die but sleep un til she is awak ened by a kiss fromher true love.

    KING. Oh, thank you. Thank you.QUEEN. You vile crea ture. Even as you have cursed my

    child, I curse you. May you be vic tim of one of yourown curses; may your own words de stroy you. And thatis a mother’s curse and as strong as any of your magicspells.

    EVELYN. The queen is right. There is no curse stron gerthan a mother’s curse.

    MALICIA. Well… We shall see. (Re gaining her com po -sure.) We shall see in about six teen years!

    QUEEN (to KING). What are you go ing to do?KING. Elise will never prick her fin ger on a spin ning

    wheel be cause there will be no spin ning wheels. Guards! Sub jects! Gather all the spin ning wheels in the cas tle, inthe town, in the king dom, and burn them. Burn them!

    MALICIA. Be on your guard. This cas tle will not be safefor her. No place will be safe for her. Six teen years! Six -teen years! (Exits.)
