ii. They have thick elastic walls.iii. Pulse can be felt in arteries.iv. They generally carry oxygen mixed pure blood except the pulmonary artery.

b. Functions of the veins:i. They carry blood towards the heart.ii. They have thin walls.

iii. They generally carry carbon dioxide mixed impure blood except the pulmonaryvein.

c. Capillaries have very thin walls through which oxygen, digested food, carbon dioxide and otherwaste products are exchanged between the blood and the surrounding cells. Arteries branch intocapillaries and again the capillaries join up to form the veins.

6. If you observe a drop of blood under a microscope, which cells would you see? What are the functionsof these cells?

a. If we observe a drop of blood under a microscope, we would see RBC’s, WBC’s and platelets.i. Function of RBC: They contain a red coloured protein called haemoglobin, which

absorbs oxygen and transports it to the cells all over the body.ii. Function of WBC: They fight against diseases by destroying harmful bacteria and

other foreign materials.iii. Function of platelets: They help blood to clot whenever there is a wound on the body.

7. With the help of a labeled diagram trace and explain the path of blood circulation in the human body.a. The blood enters the right side of the heart and is pumped to the lungs where it gives carbon

dioxide and takes up oxygen. This oxygen rich blood travels back to the left side of the heart. Itis again sent to all other parts of the body and the process is repeated again and again.(Draw the labeled diagram)

8. Draw a labeled diagram of urinary system yourselves.9. What process takes place during the period when the blood enters the kidneys till the urine leaves

the body?a. The blood gets filtered through the nephrons. They filter out excess water, salts and urea from

the blood as it passes through them. The clean blood leaves the kidneys and continues itscirculation in the body. The wastes removed by the kidneys from a liquid called urine. Itpasses from the kidneys through two tubes called ureters into an elastic sac called the urinarybladder. The bladder stores the urine until it is excreted from the body through the urethra.

Explain with reference to the context.Cousteau went to the railway station at Bandol, to collect a wooden case sent from Paris. In it was adevice—compressed air-diving lung—the result of years of struggle and dreams. This was inventedby a friend of his and himself.

2. Describe the device that arrived in the wooden case.a. The device consisted of three moderate sized cylinders of compressed air linked to an air

regulator about the size of a alarm clock. From the air regulator were two tubes, joined to a mouthpiece.

Read and Answer1) How is the sea……

a. The underwater of the oceans carries the sounds made by fish, like their grunts, coughs andchicks. Sounds travel very well under water, so fish use sound to communicate. That is why, although the sea is deep and dark, it is not silent.

2) What problems are….a. Marine animals are facing problem of underwater noise pollution.

3) What are the sources…..a. Human activities are the cause of noise pollution in the oceans shipping, boat traffic, port

construction, oil and gas exploration and underwater activities and anti-submarinemeasures, create underwater noise pollution and can be detrimental to marine life. Modernpropeller driven ships and smaller vessels are very noisy and are increasing rapidly in manyparts of the world especially around highly populated areas like European, south-east Asianand USA’s coast.

4) How have military…..a. Marine life has suffered much disturbance due to military and anti-sub marine measures.

They generate very loud short impulses of sound. Some animals have suffered damage notonly to the brain and other tissues but also to other parts of the body. Another cause forconcern is the displacement of animals during military operations, forcing them to abandonimportant foraging habitats.

5) How has oil……..a. Oil and gas and other oil-sea mineral exploration uses seismic surveys which create ripples

of intense noise. Its transmission is recorded through the rock strata in order to find newmineral reserves. Sea animals are displaced by these seismic survey activities, which canlast for several weeks in a given area.

6) Why have today’s…..a. Small trawlers and fishing boats have been replaced by large ships that capture and process

extremely large amounts of prey at any given time. These ships use sonar instruments totrace large schools of fish. Fishing lines with thousands of large hooks are used. These hugetrawling ships use massive nets with a capacity to pull the weight of a medium-sized plane. They can store large volumes of fish. These ships also have several plants on board forprocessing and packing fish in large freezing systems. They have fish meal processing andpowerfull engines that can carry this enormous fish gear around the ocean. Since, theseships have all the equipments necessary to freeze and tin fish, they only need to return totheir base once they are full. They spend a long time at sea which have an adverse effect onmarine life. This is why, the author refers to them as ‘giant factory ships’.

7) How are fishing equipment…….a. Fishing gear and machinery can crush everything in their path, destroying fragile corals,

smashing rock formation and killing several tons of fish and animals, including marinemammals and sea-birds. Studies reveal that, for every ton of prawn caught, three tons ofother fish are killed and thrown away. Apart from the natural balance, the evolutionaryprocesses of these marine animals are also being altered. As predators diminish, thepopulation of smaller escalates as they were earlier the food source of the bigger fish. Inaddition, disappearance of these species affects many other species, like sea birds and seamammals which are vulnerable to the lack of food.

B) Answer the following questions with reference to context1) These sounds……

a. These lines refer to the grunts, clicks and calls that fish use to communicate with each other.b. Fish need to communicate in order to navigate, avoid predator, forage for good and find

mates.2) It is as if they live in……

a. They refers to the fish.b. They live under the sea in their natural habitat.c. A rising tide of man-made noise is disrupting the lives of marine animals. The noise made is

similar to the sounds heard in a crowded noisy city. That is why, their habitat is comparedto it.

3) As more noise is created…..a. The noise in the sea is man-made. Shipping, boat traffic, port construction, oil and gas

explorations, military operations and under water seismic testing for mining create noise inthe sea.

b. Sea water is absorbs less sound as carbon-dioxide from the fossil fuel burning seeps into theocean and acidifies it. This makes the sounds travel better, making it detrimental to theaural senses of fish.

4) Therefore a lot more time………..a. The giant trawlers spend more time in the sea.b. The giant trawlers have the capacity to drop hundreds of fishing lines, clean and pack the

fish and freeze them for commercial use. These processes take a long time, that is whytrawlers are required to spend more time at sea.

c. The noise pollution created by the trawlers with their heavy machinery and motorsadversely effects the hearing of marine life.

5) In this world, where sounds……..a. The ‘silent world’ under the ocean is being referred to here.b. Man-made sounds like those caused by oil, gas and mineral explorations, seismic recorders,

mining and military exercises breach the harmony.c. Under sea harmony can be maintained by reducing these man-made sounds. Explorations

should be at the minimum. Fishing should be made a more responsible industry. The use ofhuge trawlers which impact undersea corals and marine life should undergo stringentchecks. Fish species and their numbers should be protected.
