Tours at the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum in Allentown

Discover how Native Americans, Pennsylvania Dutch settlers, and later city dwellers used local resources to meet their needs and wants. Explore an electric map and experience hands-on activities related to food, clothing, and shelter.

Coming to a New Land 3-8 1¼ Hr. Year-Round Role playing, crafts, & a tour introduce students to emigrants from different lands. Explore the lives of early Pennsylvania Dutch settlers, later arrivals from Eastern Europe, and more recent emigrants from around the world.

A New Look at Thanksgiving All 1 Hr. Year-Round

Learn how Native Americans and early European settlers gave thanks for the harvest. Hands-on activities include role plays, grinding corn and much more.

Native Americans & Archaeology of Pennsylvania Explore Pennsylvania Indians from Paleo times to the arrival of European settlers as you view 200+ authentic artifacts. Learn about Native American culture, lifestyles, food, and tools through engaging interactive activities including a simulated archeological dig.

American Presidency Students tour this exhibit, filled with authentic presidential images and campaign memorabilia, to select their nominee for “Best President.” The class learns about

elections and the democratic process as they elect a nominee as “Best President.” Cost: just $7.50 per child per tour. One adult FREE with every 10 students.

Historic Trout Hall, 1770, Allentown All 1 Hr. April - Oct. Built in 1770, Historic Trout Hall is a colonial stone mansion built by James Allen, son of Allentown’s founder. Step into the world of colonial America. Grades K-3 explore the family’s daily life, while grades 4 and up also learn about patriots and loyalists in Revolutionary War-era Pennsylvania. Students can practice colonial manners or write with a quill pen.

•Regular Tours: Available April - October Experience life on an 1842 Pennsylvania Dutch farm as you try a butter churn, explore folk remedies, and discover farm tools. The farmhouse dates to 1756.

•Holiday Tours: Available ONLY December 10 - 13, 9:30, 11:00, and 1:00 Costumed guides portraying members of the farm family from 1842 teach about Pennsylvania Dutch holiday customs of that era. Hear holiday tales, decorate a tree, play with old-fashioned toys, and learn about period cooking. This tour is not designed or structured to promote or inhibit any culture or religion over another. Nor is it designed to have students participate in a holiday celebration. It is designed to teach and educate. Historic Haines Mill, ca. 1850, Cetronia All 1 Hr. April - Oct.

•Students Preschool- Grade 3: The Little Red Hen Students practice ELA skills and develop their understanding of economics as they experience the story of “The Little Red Hen” first-hand, handling grain, using old-fashioned farm tools, touring the mill, and even grinding their own wheat.

• Students Grades 3 & up: Miller’s Math & Science Your tour takes you back to the 1920s, introducing you to the miller’s son, Wilbur Haines. Includes STEM concepts as students tour the mill’s simple machines and experience hands-on wheat grinding & sifting.

Historic Lock Ridge Iron Furnace, 1868, Alburtis

All Grades

1½ Hr. April - Oct.

Twelve-hour shifts, hot dangerous work, and company houses tell the story of the Industrial Revolution. Take on the role of a 1910 ironworker as you tour the grounds of an iron furnace and company town from another era. Includes STEM and map skills.

Cost: just $7.50 per child per tour. One adult FREE with every 10 students.

In-School Programs Your students can experience history right in your classroom or auditorium with these innovative, exciting, and educational in-school programs. Many presenters wear period clothing, and all bring hands-on items and/or participatory activities. Programs are available year-round, last approximately 1 hour, and cost $7.50/student/program.

Living History Dramas •Pennsylvania German Immigrant: A colonial Pennsylvania German relates the adventures of early German immigrants to Pennsylvania, showcases their traditions, and highlights chores done by each member of the farm family. Serves any age or group size.

•Revolutionary War: A Revolutionary War soldier or civilian discusses the local war effort during the American Revolution. Learn how the home front aided the war effort; hear stories of the Declaration of Independence and the Liberty Bell’s travels; and discover the effects of the war on the lives of military personnel. Accommodates any group size; best for grades 4 & up.

Classroom & Assembly Speakers •WWII B-17 Pilot: WWII comes to life as a speaker with period pilot’s attire introduces students to the bombing campaign in Europe. Students will explore the trials of becoming a pilot and the leadership he must use to develop the teamwork necessary for an effective bomber crew. The combat conditions crewmen experienced will also be presented. Accommodates any group size; best for grades 9 up. •Navajo Code Talkers: Learn about the Navajo Code Talkers, who used their native language to create an unbreakable code that helped win WWII. Students practice using the code. Accommodates any group size; best for grades 4 up. •Lehigh Valley in the Civil War: A speaker brings the era to life with primary sources from the time period, including songs, photographs, and letters from local Civil War soldiers. Accommodates any group size; best for grades 4 up. •A Day in the Life of a Colonial Child: A speaker wearing colonial-style clothing uses a PowerPoint presentation, activities, and artifacts to compare a Pennsylvania German farm child’s life at the Troxell-Steckel House with that of a wealthy child of British descent at Trout Hall. Adaptable to any grade; best for groups of 60 or fewer.

•Underground Railroad: Students explore music and other primary sources to discover how small networks, consisting mainly of African Americans, helped slaves escape bondage in the South. Accommodates any group size; best for grades 3 up.
