Everyday as we educate the young men and women who are central to the LCDS celebration, we invoke both miracles metaphorically. The military miracle, with its grand strategies, corresponds to the left brain—logical, sequential, and linear. The oil miracle, with its spiritual overlay, corresponds to the right brain—imaginative and holistic, illuminating connections and navigating meaning. We need both to inspire the whole mind. In A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future, Daniel Pink argues persuasively that moving from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age demands a Lehrman education with our sublime Lehrman teachers (though he doesn’t exactly use those words). In this Conceptual Age, information is increasingly a commodity, but the ability to create connections and meanings becomes even more valuable. The left brain may be the locus of CoreKnowledge, Hebrew, foreign languages, and our intensive math and science curriculum. But the right brain infuses our classrooms, arts and music studios, sports fields, and chesed service activities: as our students learn and play together, they build community within a framework of empathy. Our integrated Jewish/general studies offerings encourage symphonic thinking. The culminating activities in which our students engage after each unit emphasize collaboration and putting content in expressive contexts. We expect our students to graduate “high tech” and “high touch,” not only able to manage information but also capable of making fresh connections, among data - and with people. “Remember the days of old, consider the years of ages past; Ask your father, he will inform you, Your elders, they will tell you.” (Deuteronomy 32:7). Grandparents & Special Friends Day Edition!

Dear LCDS Family,The continuous LCDS Hanukkah celebration—a

fusion of music, lights, and food - is further enhanced on this morning by the presence of our grandparents and special friends. We welcome this extra energy, as we mark two miracles: the vnjkn xb, nes milchamah, the military miracle of the few over the many, the weak over the strong, and ina xb, nes shemen, the miracle of one day’s portion of oil burning for eight.

An education that renders immediate ukkv ,urbv, Ha-Nerot Hallalu, these are the candles we light, is an education that teaches each student how to write the narrative of a purposeful life. A value system that emphasizes, in an inclusive pluralistic setting, Sabbath reflection and holiday joy, and kavod haberiyot (respect for others) and mitzvot, and justice and tikkun olam, is all about human relationships. Right-brain aptitudes help prepare our young people to be heroes in their 21st Century encounters. At LCDS, nurturing those aptitudes is a family tradition.

Chodesh Tov, a good month of Tevet, Chag U’rim Same’ach, a happy (remainder of) Hanukkah, and Shabbat Shalom.

InitiativeHorizon Psychological Services, as part of the Ezra Consortium initiative, facilitates monthly meetings with principals and counselors of day schools in which salient psychological and academic topics are ad-dressed and challenging cases are present-ed so that counselors can learn strategies in dealing with these issues.

The first meeting topic was “Motivational Challenges: Assessing and Intervening with Students Who Are Not Motivated to Per-form,” with a particular emphasis on Middle school students. We discussed ways to approach the student and resources that are available. Strategies for motivating students included:• Becoming a role model for student interest.• Getting to know your student.• Using examples freely.• Using a variety of student-active teaching

activities.• Setting realistic performance goals.• Being free with praise, and constructive in

criticism. • Giving each student as much control over

his or her own education as possible.Nicole Abelson MS, DTR
