2. THE STORY OF THE LEMON THIEVES

It’s Pancake Day and Clive Custard, the famous television chef, is

presenting his special pancake programme when there is a technical

problem. Clive leaves the studio for a moment and Lucy enters – she

takes the lemons from Clive’s pancake ingredients. Lucy hides the

lemons before Clive comes back and he finds her in his studio. After

a confusing conversation she says goodbye and leaves.

Clive starts his pancake presentation again but he soon sees that the

lemons are missing. The stage manager tells him to call the police.

Frank Peel, Detective Chief Inspector of the Very Serious Fruit Crimes

Department, arrives at the television studio. Frank Peel asks Clive

lots of questions. We find out that Frank is bored of police work and

that he wants to be a game show presenter.

Clive tells Frank about Lucy being the possible “lemon thief” and so

Frank calls for Pablo, the police artist, to come to the studio. Pablo

arrives and Clive gives him a description of Lucy. Pablo draws the

description and the picture is made into posters which are put up in

the town. The crime is also the headline news in the newspaper, on

the television and on the radio.

Mrs Pears, who is shopping in the market, sees the “lemon thief” at

the fruit stall and reports this important information to Frank Peel.

Frank Peel goes to the fruit market and works undercover. He

dresses as a greengrocer and looks out for anything strange.

•Does Frank Peel catch the “lemon thief”?

•Why does Lucy steal the lemons?

•Does Clive Custard finish his pancake show and make pancakes?

•Does Frank Peel become a game show presenter?

•Do you like cooking?

5. FRANK PEEL’S SONG: A STAR LIKE YOU!

The life of a policeman is a lonely one, sometimes it feels like I’m the only one.Rolling up my sleeves and catching “Lemon Thieves”,believe me Mr Mustard, it’s not any fun. There’s so much more that I can do,I could be a star like you!

There’s so much more that I could be,I could be an actor on TV,I can be good,I can be bad,I can be happy,I can be sad,I can be young,I can be old,I can be hot,I can be cold,I can be big,I can be small, but believe me Mr Mustard, that’s not all. There’s so much more that I can do,I could be a star like you!

I can clap,I can slap,I can whip,I can strip,I can swim,I can ride,I can run,I can hide.There’s nothing that I can’t do,I want to be a star like you!

I can dance,I can sing,I can do everything and I’ll do anything. If you help me make my dreams come true,I want to be a star like you!

But there is one thing I want to be the most, the one thing that can bring me satisfaction.I want to be a game show host!Light! Camera! Action!

11. YOU’RE ON TV!

*prop: an object used by actors when performing a show. e.g. a bowl, a wooden spoon.

You’re going to create a television cookery show and

present the show to your class.

Getting started

•In groups, make a list of things you know how to cook. For

example: scrambled eggs, Spanish omelette, lemon mousse.

•Choose which dish you want to make on your television show.

•Decide on the role each person in your group will have:

‒the show director

‒the stage manager

‒the script writer

‒the person in charge of props*

‒the chef

‒the chef’s assistant

Putting the show together

•Make a list of the ingredients.

•Write down how to make your dish and help the script writer

produce the script for the show.

•Make a list of the utensils and any other props you need. It will be

good if you can bring the utensils to school but you can pretend to

have real ingredients.

•Work together and rehearse your show.

•Be creative! What’s the show’s name? What’s the chef’s name? Is

he or she clumsy, bossy, or forgetful?

Tips

•Use the recipe for trifle and The Pancake Song to help you write the

method for your recipe.

•Don’t choose something too complicated. It’s better to choose

something simple and do it well.

•Put on a great show for your class!

12. CELEBRATIONS

Guy Fawkes’ Night

In Britain, 5 November is Guy Fawkes’ Night or Bonfire Night. In the evening there are bonfires and fireworks in gardens and parks.

Pancake Day

Pancake Day is Shrove Tuesday - the day before Lent starts. Lent is the six weeks before Easter. For Christians, Lent is a time of giving up things and remembering the time when Jesus went to the desert and didn’t eat for 40 days. Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to use up all the rich food in the house for example eggs, milk and sugar, which are forbidden during Lent. Pancakes are an easy way to use up all these ingredients. In Spain, and in many other countries, a carnival marks the beginning of Lent.

Notting Hill Carnival – celebrated on the last weekend of August.

People from the Caribbean Islands have lived in Britain since the 17th century. Notting Hill is a part of London where were black and white communities have lived together for many years but there were conflicts and riots, especially in the 1950s. After the riots people started to talk about the importance of living together in harmony. In 1964 a procession was held with a Caribbean steel band playing its distinctive music on the streets of Britain for the first time.

Since the 1500s, there have been two kinds of Church in Britain: Roman Catholic and Protestant. Guy Fawkes was one of a group of Catholics who felt that Protestant, King James I was treating Catholics unfairly. In 1605 they planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London, and to kill the king and his men. They hid barrels of gunpowder in a cellar under the Houses of Parliament. But on 5 November 1605 the plan was discovered and Guy Fawkes was arrested by the king’s soldiers. He was tortured and executed.

To celebrate his survival, King James I ordered that the people should have a great bonfire on the night of 5 November each year.

The procession was a huge success and was enjoyed by everyone who lived in Notting Hill. This success was important in helping people from the Caribbean to start rebuilding pride in their heritage*. The Notting Hill Carnival is now the second biggest carnival in the world, a London tradition and a symbol of London as a successful, multicultural city.

Page 15: THE LEMON THIEVES WORKBOOK - Look Outlookoutcompany.com/panel/res/THE LEMON THIEVES WORKBOOK.pdf · THE LEMON THIEVES Play written and ... sprinkle squeeze Art portrait still life

In groups, decide which celebration you want to design a poster for:

•Pancake Day

•Guy Fawkes’ Night

•The Notting Hill Carnival

You can use the information you already have and look up more information on the internet. The internet is also a good place to find pictures, or you can draw your own pictures.

Materials you will need:

•sheet of A3 paper

•coloured pens and pencils

•glue

•scissors

•pictures

Remember to include:

•the name of the celebration

•the date and time (Note how dates are written in English.)

•where it will be held

•what will happen at the celebration

•who is organising the celebration

Ask your teacher if you can put the posters up in your classroom.
