  • Introduction

What you will be reading in this book is a collection of letters written by Clarence E. Johnson to his friend, and later wife, Verna May Johnson. Clarence wrote these letters to Verna while he was serving in WW1. The letters portray a man that tells of his love and aection for his family and his time spent in the war. I have compiled these 56 letters by scanning each one and creating a book with them.

My connection to Clarence and Verna is by relation; I am their great, great granddaughter. Ive created this book to preserve my familys history. I might not have ever known them, but after reading these letters I have a better understanding of my great, great grandfather, great, great grandmother, and part of their life. Clarences letters date back through the years 1917-1920.

I hope after reading this, others will be inspired to venture into their own family history and nd things they can preserve and share with the world.

TH' QUEEREST thing about th' war, a l fur as I can see, Is th' way th' mothers carry on-they kind

0' tickle me. Each one has certain noti ons that her own

boy ought to git Th' best bed in t h' ba rracks an' th' onl y food

that's fit. ' Leastways that's how it sounds to me when

I hear Raymie's Ma A-shootin' off her troubles from th' trenches

in her jaw. Says she-'twuz )ust this momin' while she

put her hall' in comb: " He never peeled p'taters when he lived with us

    at home! " ,

I KIND 0' guess that Raymie knows th' way sh e carries on A-judgin' from th' letters that he writes since

he's been gone. He tell s her a ll th' f unny things a soldier

to heaven's dom e : "He never peeled p'tater when he lived with

    us at home!"

    "HE'S policeman in th' citchen!" I explained what K. P . mean.

But she didn't stop to list en- she had other woes to vent.

Then she held a lof t a pic ture, one from "Over There" some pla e,

'Twuz her boy a-peelin' 'taters with a gas mask on his f ace.

Folks, I couldn't help a -Iaughin', though to laug-h wuz kind 0' mean,

When she thought it was a false face like they wear on Hollow en!

"But," says she, "there ain't no telJin'-once a boy begins to roam

Our copies of The- Hatchet we have read from end to end and a few of our impressions to the editors we send. The Wood Pile page is full of pep, the sporting page a treat; and the way you handle local stuff is pretty hard to beat. In fact we like The Hatchet from the handle to the blade. We like the men- who make it arid the ship where it is made. If you should ever need our help to keep it sharp and bright, we'll help you with our intellect, our money or our might.
