Customer Service:Be Memorable - For the Right Reasons

We tend to remember positive and negative experiences more vividly than average day-to-day ones. Try to make every customer’s experience a positive one that they’ll remember and talk to others about.

Be helpful, be courteous and polite – give a little extra if possible, even if it is just some advice or extra information about the book or video they are checking out.

A happy, satisfied customer is likely to return and/or tell others about the good experiences that they had when dealing with our Library – word of mouth recommendations from friends and colleagues are very valuable.

The Importance of Preventative Health Care

The adage "an ounce of prevention isworth a pound of cure" is especially true when applied to health care. But each year, millions of Americans choose to skip routine examinations, allowing preventable diseases to end hundreds of thousands of lives.

Immunizations, vaccines, check-ups, routine physicals--they're all essential to good health. Almost one out of every two adults has at least one chronic illness. Most of those can be prevented.

When it comes to treating potentiallyserious conditions, early diagnosis is key. Generally, the earlier you begin treatment for a condition, the greater your chancefor a full recovery.

Even if you're in the best shape of your life, a serious condition with no signs or symptoms may be lurking inside your body. X-rays, blood tests and other routine screenings are among the only ways to detect the early warning signs. If a specific condition runs in your family, like colon cancer, it's even more important that you get screened early and often to keep healthy.

Better health and wellness starts with preventing problems in the first place.Visit www.timewellspent.anthem.com/prevention/ to become empowered toask your doctors and other health care providers any questions to help you livewell and stay productive.

If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be?I would say 45, our family spent some time at Silver Beach on Lake Michigan. This was just before my girls got married/ or moved out. It was a special summer.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?I don't know, maybe learn about photography. I love to take pictures of the sky, trees, birds in winter (Cardinals, blue-jays).

If you had to work on only one project for the next year, what would it be?Crochet a blanket to cuddle up with while reading a good book!

If you were reincarnated as an animal, what would it be?If I believed in re-incarnation, which I don't, it would be great to be a sand-hill crane or a monarch butterfly, flying over so much beautiful landscape.

When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time?Usually playing piano. It's relaxing for me.

If you could have dinner with only three people (real or fictitious/from any time period/dead or alive),which three people would you choose and why?I would say my paternal grandparents and my uncle George. I didn't really get to know them like I would have liked to.

What is your idea of fun? If given a chance to skip work for a day, how would you spend the entire day?Having a "Girl" day with my daughters (shopping in Nashville, eating lunch together, etc.)

If you were stranded on a beach alone, what are five things that you would want to have with you?A good solid shelter, (for hurricanes) a camera, (for breathtaking sunsets), and enough food and water to survive.

What was your favorite musical group in middle school?None really, but when I was younger, (back in the 60's) I spent alot of time with my aunts who liked Motown and early Beatles and that has stayed with me.

Name one thing you miss about being a kid.Riding a bicycle with my sister all over Boone county. Stopping at a pharmacy to buy a bag of candy. We would spend all day out and then come home for dinner. It was safe to do that back then.

Do you have any phobias?Insects.

What types of food do you NOT eat?Limberger cheese, braunschweiger, liver, etc. (you get the picture!) Gross stuff!

Staff ShowcaseBeginning this month, the Library Scoop will include “STAFF SHOWCASE.” This section of the Scoop will highlight recommendations by fellow staff members for books, movies, restaurants, vacation spots, shops, etc…. The LSC staff has shared their favorites for March. Enjoy!

I enjoyed watching “While We’re Young” this month. It was a funny look at the hipsterish-lives of folks in NYC and learning about really what matters in your life as you age. – Lisa ”City on Fire” by Garth Risk Hallberg (available from JCPL in print and e-book). If you read only one 965-page novel about punk rock, fireworks, insider trading, and the New York blackout of 1977, make it “City on Fire.” - Davin

Audiobook by Rob Lowe—”Stories I Only Tell My Friends” and “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” series. Both are AWESOME!!!! – Wendy

“Let's Pretend This Never Happened: (A Mostly True Memoir) and Furiously Happy” byJenny Lawson. My husband thought I was losing my mind at how often I laughed out loud while reading this book. Totally made me realize life is not as bad as you think and we are who we are and that’s ok. –Amber

I took my husband to see “Deadpool” for Valentines, a little raunchy, but lots of laughs (not to mention, Ryan Reynolds ) –Amber

“Salmon Fishing on the Yemen” - Bobbi “Trumbo” - Bobbi “Love & Mercy” - Bobbi “The Wrecking Crew” (are featured in Love & Mercy) - Bobbi “Truth” - Bobbi “Infinitely Polar Bear” - Bobbi “Man on a Wire” (One of the best documentaries I’ve seen. It is a quality standard I use when screening Heartland Film Festival documentary submissions. - Bobbi A fictional feature, “The Walk,” is now out in theatres; watch the doc! The real Philippe Petit is an amazing, inspiring force to be reckoned with. - Bobbi

“The Martian” (*watch on the big screen!) - Bobbi

Hoopla: “Get Up!: Why Your Chair is Killing You and What You Can Do About It”by James Levine - Bobbi

I haven’t been out to many new restaurants in the area. But have recently tried each of the new one’s downtown as they opened here in Franklin. - Bobbi • Gigi’s Sugar Shack: Recently opened and is full of baked sweets. The chocolate mousse they made for me…YUM! • Suzy’s Tea House: Quiche with mixed greens side salad • Court Street Café: Berry Avocado Chicken Salad • Benjamin’s: Cranberry Crunch Salad with grilled chicken • Ann’s Restaurant: The Franklin Favorite breakfast. Biscuits & Gravy. I also recommend the Cranberry Chicken Apple Wrap. • For tea lovers – consistently well made iced tea: Benjamin’s & Ann’s Restaurant.

The bottom line is -- we sit too much! We sit at meals, we sit in the car, we sit at work (most of us!), we sit watching tv, we sit while waiting for appointments. The admonition to be active is nothing new, but endocrinologist James Levine, a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn, has spent years studying the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle. Although rest is important, the body wasn’t meant to be idle for long periods of time during our waking hours.

Studies have found that sitting for more than half your day can double your risk of diabetes and cardiovascular problems. In a November 2014 article in Scientific American, Dr. Levine states that “lack of movement slows metabolism, reducing the amount of food that is convertedto energy and thus promoting fat accumulation, obesity, and the litany of ills – heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and more – that come with being overweight. Sitting is bad for lean people, too. For instance, sitting in your chair after a meal leads to high blood sugar spikes, whereas getting up after you eat can cut those spikes in half.” Studies have also shown that long hours of sitting can increase your risk of developing certain types of cancer, regardless of the amount of time spent exercising.

But never fear! There are numerous ways to easily add standing to your daily routines and ward of some of the sitting blues. One way is to stand while talking on the phone, answering emails, or during the commercials of your favorite tv shows. You could use an activity tracker to alert you to times when you are too idle. Plan a “walk and talk” meeting instead of the traditional seated meeting. Look for ways to get up during the times you are usually sitting, even if only for a few minutes. Your body will thank you!

Your SWAT committee recognizes the seriousness of this “sitting disease,” as it is sometimes called, and wants to help you get out of the habit of sitting. We have designated the SWAT theme for the year to be “Stand Up! For Your Health” During the year, in addition to our annual wellness

Stand Up! For Your Healthchallenges, we are implementing the “SWAT BINGO Challenge” to encourage everyone to stand up more often. This contest will challenge you to do various activities, such as taking a walk at lunch, visiting a park, standing during a meet-ing, and other healthful activities. Completing a bingo on the card will make you eligible for a fabulous prize at the end of the year, and if you complete every space on the card you will be rewarded with a bonus prize! Watch for more information!

Get ready to StandUp! For your Health.
