PRINCIPAL’S REPORTBook Week 2018 This year’s theme is “Find Your Treasure” and this theme will certainly be touched upon during our Term 3 research hub lessons. Book Week will be celebrated

at our school from Monday 20 August until Friday 24 August and includes a free Book Week Performance on Tuesday 28 August. The Library Committee has organised a lot of exciting activities during this time.

During Week 5, we would love to share some bilingual stories with our students in the library during lunch times. If you would like to read a favourite story to our students, please contact Mrs Rimmer (teacher librarian) or Mrs Rush (in the office).

Education Week – NSW Public Schools – “Today’s schools – creating tomorrow’s world” Thank you to the many parents who came out to our open day last Wednesday. The day was a great success and I spoke with many parents on the day who not only communicated positively about the opportunity to see their children in their working environment, but also how much they love the school, its culture and atmosphere and the respect they have for our teachers. Also, make sure you check out our Facebook page for the videos and slides to our Growth Mindset session if you missed it.

Staff Masterchef Most of you know that we were running a staff Masterchef challenge for Education Week Morning Tea. For those of you that would like to know the results, here they are: 1st Place – Mrs. Shama Wood (Salted Caramel Slice) 2nd Place – Mrs. Julie Rush (Chocolate Tarts) 3rd Place – Mr. Michael Duffy (Spinach Triangles) 4th Place – Miss Helen Chan (Earl Grey Tea Cake)

Equal 5th place – Mrs. Sonia Lopes (Portuguese Tarts) and Mrs. Nicole Harvey (Brownies & Rocky Road). All entries were of a particularly high standard, so well done to all chefs! Thanks for being part of a bit of delicious fun!

Closing the main school gate If you are visiting the school during school hours and coming through the main school gate, please make sure the gate is closed behind you when you enter and when you leave to avoid a quick and easy exit for some of our younger students. We have a student in our school who is a flight risk, so this issue is very important !!! Also, we are keeping the pool gate near the Uniform Shop closed as well – please ensure when you walk through it, you close it behind you !

Community Celebration Day You are cordially invited to our annual Community Celebration Day on Wednesday 26 September 2018 in week 10 of this term. This year’s theme is “It’s a wonderful world”. We look forward to seeing many parents at what is one of our most exciting days of the year. Our fantastic committee, led by Mrs. Pisano, Mrs. Tokyurek and Mrs. Wehbe, are planning a great extravaganza for your viewing pleasure and for those who can’t make it on the day, we are having the event professionally filmed and we will produce a DVD as a result, that will be sold for a nominal price. Thank you in advance to our wonderful P and C team who give so much time and effort to make this day so successful.

Our Spectacular This exciting event takes place at the Opera House on Monday 10 September. Parents of students taking part should have received a note advising you of your success in purchasing tickets for this event. Please ensure that this money is paid as soon as possible. As a school community, we have booked buses for parents and students travelling to and from the event.

Dress like a Farmer Day & Sausage Sizzle Thanks to our wonderful SRC team, led by Ms. Ward and Mrs. Harvey, and our generous P&C, we will be running a Mufti Day next Wednesday 22 August, where the children will dress like a farmer for the day for a gold coin donation. As well, the P&C will be running a pre-paid sausage sizzle for $3 in which all proceeds will be directly donated to the drought relief campaign. When you think about the $3 for the sausage sizzle and the potential $2 gold coin donation for mufti day, we could contribute $5 per child for our farmers out west that are doing it very tough. Please support this desperate cause.

St George Eisteddfod Firs time we have entered into anything like this and what a fantastic result! Our students performed with great energy and enthusiasm and many people there thought that our children were the most engaging act there. There were many other schools there, including one school who had 5 or 6 dance troupes (all taught by Natalie Ettingshausen who owns a major dance studio!), but despite all of that, our team got a highly commended and best costume award – in our first attempt. A huge congratulations and thank you to Miss Clift, Miss Mo, Mrs Kim and Mrs Herkes for their time, energy and great skill. Thanks also to Mrs Argyropoulos for highlighting the competition to us and getting her husband to make our yellow submarine (which looks fabulous!). Thanks to the parents that showed up to support our team!

Stage 3 Camp vs High School Orientation Something has just been noticed and that is that the Stage 3 camp has been organised for Monday 3, Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 December – this directly clashes with the High School Orientation Day on Tuesday 4 December. We are very sorry about this, but so many high schools now have orientation days other than this one slated, so matter which dates we have chosen for our camp, we were bound to clash with something. We have 140 places available for camp (an expression of interest hasn’t been sent out yet – coming soon)

but with 210 students in Stage 3, some will be able to choose between the camp or high school orientation.

High absences – Term 3 It was noticed by myself and a lot of teachers, that there were a lot of students away on the last day of term 2, and now, several families taking holidays in the middle of Term 3. Fair enough if your child was sick on the last day or there is someone fatally ill overseas to take the trip, but did you know, that because it was the last day of term was followed by holidays, parents need to produce a medical certificate for that absence ?? Or, did you know that if you are overseas for more than 50 days, I can terminate your enrolment at the school? If your child wasn’t sick, please don’t make this type of thing a habit, or even letting your children have a day off on their birthday – every day at school is important and every day something new is learnt – don’t deny your child these opportunities. The picture below explains the detrimental effect of not sending your child to school regularly. Make a positive decision for your child’s future and send them to school every day.

Many parents of late, have been applying for Exemption from Absence. This means that if you have a very, very, very good reason for going overseas, I can approve the leave so the absences do not count against your child. Most of the time, the reason you provide isn’t good enough (according to the Department of Education) and I cannot approve the exemption. This doesn’t mean you can’t go – parents make that decision – all it means is that the absences accrued by your trip will be marked as unreasonable excuse for being away from school (A) and the absences will count. Lately, parents have been applying for big blocks of leave – most between 30 and 40 days, one or two have been for over 50 days. For your knowledge, an absence from school for over 50 days means that your child will

Page 4: The - lidcombe-p.schools.nsw.gov.au · 4th Place – Miss Helen Chan (Earl Grey Tea Cake) Equal 5th place – Mrs. Sonia Lopes (Portuguese Tarts) and Mrs. Nicole Harvey (Brownies

be de-registered at the school. That is a Department of Education rule that we must follow. When you come back from your trip, sure, you can re-enrol your child, however, if you live outside the school’s drawing area, you will have to apply as an “Out of Area Student”, and with numbers increasing rapidly, the answer could very well be no. Please think very carefully as to why your child is missing school and if you are taking a trip overseas, how long your child will be absent from school and how much learning they will missing. We strongly recommend against taking long trips.

The Game Changers Wow ! What an exciting venture that was. In the first instance, we had only heard about The Game Changers in week 5 of last term. Miss Hendy, Mrs Pant and our intrepid team of heroes – Simona, JiWoo, Samet, Eddie, Justin and Amanda) got together a response in only 2 weeks to submit to the Game Changer committee. It was fabulous news that we were selected as one of 8 primary school to make the finals. The team spent 3 nights away from home, learning about new educational trends and their engaging tools to further inspire them to think of a creative future. They didn’t win the final pitch, but they certainly represented our school in the highest way possible. Very, very proud of all of them ! Thank you to Miss Hendy for her outstanding skills and energy, Mrs. Pant for her leadership and organisation and to our parents, for not only allowing them to go along but for also creating very creative children ! (Apples don’t fall too far from trees !)

Enrol now for Kindergarten 2018 Does your preschool child turn 5 years of age before 31 July 2019? Have you enrolled your child at Lidcombe Public School for next year? Now is the time to fill in your application. Please call into the office for

an enrolment form as soon as convenient or arrange for one to be sent home with an older brother or sister.

Our 2018 Kindergarten Transition program has changed dramatically and this will be the fourth year of its implementation. We will begin with Kindergarten Orientation Night (Thursday 27 September 2018, starting at 6.00pm in Larcombe Hall), then we will start our transition days in Term 4, running from 9.00am to 11.00am in the mornings on the following days:-

Thursday 18 October 2018 Thursday 25 October 2018 Thursday 1 November 2018 Thursday 8 November 2018 Thursday 15 November 2018 Thursday 22 November 2018 Thursday 29 November 2018 Thursday 6 December 2018

There will be a number of great activities for your child and you as their parent that will not only strengthen your bond, but also familiarise and build confidence in your child about their classrooms, teachers and other students.

If you have already completed an Application for Enrolment form for your Kindergarten child you will automatically receive further details about these sessions as they become available. If you would like to read some general information about enrolling in a NSW public school please refer to the Department of Education and Training website link:- www.schools.nsw.edu.au/media/downloads/gotoschool/enrolment/detsef.pdf

Kindergarten students will start school on Wednesday 6 February 2019. Of course, parents and Kindergarten students will be called in before that for their Best Start Interview – times to be announced.

Premier’s Sporting Challenge The Challenge includes a range of initiatives with one common purpose - to have more students, more active, more of the time! The Premier's Sporting Challenge aims to engage young people in sport and physical activity and encourages them to lead healthy, active lifestyles. Sport plays an important role in developing regular physical activity, provides positive health outcomes and is a fun and healthy way to connect with your local community. We invite students to take up the Challenge - and take the path to a healthier life.

Students can strive for the Bronze Award (210 minutes a week or 30 minutes a day), Silver Award (315 minutes a week or 45 minutes a day), Gold

Page 5: The - lidcombe-p.schools.nsw.gov.au · 4th Place – Miss Helen Chan (Earl Grey Tea Cake) Equal 5th place – Mrs. Sonia Lopes (Portuguese Tarts) and Mrs. Nicole Harvey (Brownies

Award (420 minutes a week or 60 minutes a day) and Diamond Award (560 minutes a week or 80 minutes a day). Students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 only have to colour in a picture to register that they had been physically active for the day. For our school, we will start to collect how many minutes we have been active for (inside and outside of school) in Week 6 of this term. We hope to replicate the success of last year by attaining a DIAMOND AWARD again. Even the staff will be participating in the staff challenge – we will let you know the details of our end of year event very soon! (More details later). Get out there boys and girls and get active! Last few weeks !!! Kindergarten to use canteen in Term 4 In order to prepare Kindergarten for future success, we have decided that they will be permitted to use the canteen in Term 4. This will be supported by our wonderful canteen owners who will open up a special Kindergarten Canteen window and display visuals of what money they might have (say a picture of a $2 coin) and pictures of what they can buy with that, to help their decision making. I personally think that they should be given no more than $2 to buy something at the canteen. Please assist the children by making them wear a zip pocket to keep their money safe and saying to them, “It mustn’t be taken out of your pocket until you are at the canteen window” or “Do not give this money to anyone else but the canteen workers” should be the scene you set for them so they can access the canteen without losing their money. In other Kindergarten news, they are all very excited about going to Calmsley Hill Farm next Monday 20 August. Money has been slow in coming in, so if you can get in by this Friday (17/8), it would be greatly appreciated. Congratulations ! Congratulations to Aryan Singh, who at the end of last week, went down to Melbourne to partake in the National Ju Jitsu championships. Not only did he participate, but he ended up coming 2nd in the U10’s 28-30kg Wrestling division losing out to someone who is a 2 time world champion ! What an amazing effort – now all Aryan needs is a strong back to carry that massive medallion around – it should have its own postcode !

Great work ! Something that really caught my eye this fortnight, was Lucas Yip in 2L who designed his own robot in his writing session, refined his process by including a picture of his robot and then proceeded to build it. What a wonderful process of hard work, determination and creativity Lucas – well done !!

Science and Maths Conference This was a very late decision, but I found out on Saturday 4 August that the annual Science and Maths conference for students wasn’t at capacity. I asked was it for primary aged students and was given a ‘yes’ and that 5 other primary schools were attending. I asked who was on the agenda and found that Eddie Woo (of “WooTube” fame) was presenting, plus there were workshops with a nationally known company ‘Fizzics’, which is an excellent intervention. It was only $5 a student (which I was happy to pay for), so we quickly organised a bus and 60 students from Stage 3 really enjoyed themselves. We will definitely have to make this an annual experience !

Watch out for our Coders ! We are sending two groups of Stage 3 students to camps where coding and design thinking will be the major skills required. The teams had to be made up of Stage 3 students, with two from year 5 and two from year 6. Also, the team had to be made up of two girls and two boys. The Scratch Code team will participate in an event at Oatley PS on Wednesday 29 August (Miss An will go with them) and the EV3 coding group will participate in their event at Berala PS (Mrs Pant will go with them). Congratulations to the following students for representing our school in this unique opportunity – we know you will do well ! Scratch Coders EV3 Coders Spencer Soejanto Ashley Clavecillas Keith Miller Issey Lee Zara Zanic Atticus D’Adam Riya Kumar Elizabeth Win Platinum Awards Being Green suggests that your child is behaving very well and is doing what our teachers expect

of them in the classroom and the playground. These awards in its current format have been running for more than 3 years now and over the last couple of weeks we added a few new people to our list so far this year. Recipients for: Week 3: Yakub Demiryurek (S3B), Malak Youne (S2L), Andy Kim (S2H) and Rafa Amir (S3U). Week 2: Ali Tellin (S2S) and James Lin (S2B). We will have our Platinum Party Morning Tea early this term. Well done students !

Outdoor Learning I was just walking around the school the other day, and it was wonderful to see a few classes making the most of the beautiful weather we are experiencing at the moment. Outdoor learning is a

great way to change things up in the classroom – the students love the fresh air too!

New Buildings – recent developments A Contractor has been appointed for the redevelopment of Lidcombe Public School, with Hutchinson Builders to commence site preparation works. As you have all seen, a security fence has gone up and site sheds have been installed. I implore everyone to keep well away from the area to keep out of harm’s way. Very soon, site ground improvements will begin. The Development Application was approved by Cumberland Council on 16th April 2018. We are continuing to work with the Project Reference Group to complete detailed design, ensuring the best design solution for the permanent home bases, administration building and library. The project team will be hosting talks with the students and staff early next term to brief them on the works and the importance of construction safety. A school information booth will be scheduled to allow parents to be updated on the project and its construction once term 3 commences. The project team will continue to provide ongoing consultation and engagement with you about the redevelopment including through Department of

Education’s website for the redevelopment, please visit: https://www.schoolinfrastructure.nsw.gov.au/projects/l/lidcombe-public-school.html. If you have any project enquiries you may send them to [email protected].

Newsletter All newsletters are emailed to our families each fortnight. Electronic distribution is a much better method of communication with families as it allows the school community to enjoy great images of students in full colour without the environmental impact of substantial paper usage.

Did you know???

For the safety of all students, toddlers, babies and adults, please do not bring dogs into the school grounds, even on leashes. Some children have a genuine fear and it can be quite distressing for them as well as for parents, particularly those with very young children. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Under the Companion Animals Act

1998 No 87 (14.1.e), dogs are

prohibited in school grounds,

(whether or not they are leashed

or otherwise controlled).

PEER COACHING

We had our second Peer Coach training day yesterday with our training peer coaches – Miss An, Mrs Park, Miss Wong, Mrs Harvey, Miss Zong, Ms Scott and Ms Pant.

Peer coaching is a process grounded in research through which teachers work with one another to share expertise and provide feedback, support and assistance. The teachers are coaching five teacher colleagues to successfully implement future focused learning in their classrooms. I am very thankful to these ten teachers who have freely given their time to actively participate in this initiative so they can engage their students in quality teaching and learning by focusing on collaboration to create solutions to real world problems using appropriate technology. This is in addition to our Early Career Teacher mentoring and Beginning Teacher Strategy.

SENTRAL PARENT PORTAL We are now organising access keys (or codes) so families can access the parent portal in Sentral. As we have 580 families, this is being in organised in batches. Please check your children’s bags for the letter with instructions and access keys.

TELL THEM FROM ME The parent, student (Years 4-6) and teacher surveys will be available again this term. We have signed up for a shorter survey for the Years 4-6 students. Please find more information about the testing and the non-consent form in the attachments to this email.

RESOURCE GROUP

With Kindy Transition coming up in a few weeks, we have a number of resources that we need to get ready to hand out to parents for these sessions. We would love it if we could find some mum who are free on a Tuesday morning from 9am-11am to come and help us work on these resources. It’s mainly cutting and laminating so nice and easy, there’s just a lot of it. It’s a good chance to sit and have a cup of coffee and a chat with friends. We do it in Lidbury Hall so toddlers are welcome.

If you are available please see Julie – day and time can be flexible if needed.

Don’t forget our Dress Like a Farmer / Sausage Sizzle Day next Wednesday. This is such a great cause to raise money for and these guys are doing it tough out there. They are the backbone of this country - without them you wouldn’t have the food on your tables, the clothes or your back and much more. It’s often very hard for us city dwellers to understand the plight of the farmer in drought but having been out to the bush many times and seeing the conditions out there now, it is just

heartbreaking. Let’s see if we can blow this fundraiser right out of the water and aim for $4,000 – can we do it!!!!!
