The Life of Christ Lesson 1

Introduction:

Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.(KJV)

As we read the verse above, we need to ask ourselves, “ Who is this Jesus?” The answer to this question is what our study will be about. To understand who Jesus is, we must understand some things about the Godhead. Godhead means deity, or the state of being God.

Genesis 1:1 states: In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. The word “God” in Gen. 1:1 is the Hebrew elohim, the plural form of the Hebrew word el. When we read John 1: 1- 2 we learn that there was more than one person at creation. John 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. (NKJ)

The Godhead is made up of three persons: the Father, the Word (also called the Son, or Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. They are united in purpose, making them ONE. Yet, each one of them has different functions and roles. Each person in the Godhead worked to accomplish the same plan and purpose. The Father directed the plan that the Word come to earth in the flesh as a servant and die for the sins of all of mankind. The Holy Spirit’s role was to bring about by miraculous works the conception of the Word, testify, by miraculous works, that He was the Christ, and to give us inspired scripture so that we can know the mind of Christ. The role of the Word was to come to earth in the fleshly body of a servant and to die for all of mankind.

Although each person in the Godhead had different duties to perform, they did their duties as one, together. They worked in unison toward man’s redemption. This is illustrated in John 14: 26 and John 16: 13 – 15 that Jesus spoke:

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.(KJV)

John 16:13-15 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. (KJV)

All three persons in the Godhead functioned in unity to bring about man’s redemption, and at times their functions overlapped.

When Jesus was conceived in an earthly mother by the Holy Spirit, He did not change who He was. He never stopped being God. While on earth, Jesus lived perfectly. He claimed equality with God, He accepted worship from others here on earth, He forgave sin, He remembered that He had come from heaven, why He was here and when and how He would die. Because Jesus created us (remember, He was at creation with the Father and Holy Spirit – Gen. 1:1; John 1:1) He knows all about us. It is because He knows and understands us that He came here to earth. ( Ps 145:8-9 The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works. KJV Ps 78:38-39 But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away,

3

and did not stir up all his wrath. For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again (KJV)

His work here on earth was not done by Him alone. It included the other two persons of the Godhead. The position and authority of the Father was glorified by Jesus while He was here on earth.

As Jesus taught here on earth, some of the Jews realized who He was (Example: John 3:2, Nicodemus; John 9:33 Blind man, etc. ), but some of the Jews saw Jesus as just a man. However, Jesus did not have to prove that He was God on His own. (John 5:31-36 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. KJV) John the Baptist, the Father, the works He did, and the Holy Spirit all bore witness of the fact that He was God.

There are some people who may argue that being called “the Son of God” makes Christ a lesser being than God the Father, but it does not. “Son” is not used to describe Jesus as the offspring of parents, but rather is used to refer to Him as equal or the same with the Father ( John 5:17-18 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. KJV) “Son” is equal with the other terms that identify God in Isaiah 9:6: Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.

Jesus is also called the Father’s “only begotten Son”. “Only begotten” refers to Jesus being one of a kind, unique and of the same nature as another. Jesus was of the same nature as the Father.

As we study, remember the verse we started out with: Hebrews 13:8. God the Word never changed who He was ( Mal. 3:6; Heb. 1: 10 – 12). How did He become flesh and remain God at the same time? There are some things known only to God: Deut 29:29 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law. (KJV) Our responsibility is to have the faith, from evidences shown in the scripture, that it is so!

LESSON TEXT: John 7: 1 – 8: 20

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE YOU BEGIN…

When the scriptures refer to “the Jews” in these passages, they are talking about the Jewish leaders at that time ( i.e. Authorities, Pharisees, Saducees, Chief Priests, the ruling elite.)

4

“The People” refer to the common Jewish people of the day. This lesson takes place in the fall of the year. Jesus finished His Galilean ministry about six months ago, and He is to the close of His periods of retirements. It is time for the Feast of Tabernacles. The Feast of Tabernacles was a time of thanksgiving and celebration for the harvest that God had given the Jews (Lev. 23: 39; Deut. 16: 13 – 15). They were to remember the years that they had spent in the wilderness, and they did this by dwelling in booths made of tree branches ( Neh. 8:15 – 16). All Jewish men were told to go to the Feasts in the Law of Moses ( Ex. 23:14, 17; 34:23; Deut. 16:16). Jesus would have a good reason to be at the Feast of Tabernacles because the Law of Moses was still in effect while He was here on earth. Remember that He came to establish a new law or covenant.

John 10: 1 – 21

In this section of scripture, Jesus says, “ I am the door of the sheep.” And “ I am the good shepherd.” It is a beautiful analogy of how Jesus loves and cares for those who follow Him. However, the Jews still do not understand what Jesus is trying to tell them.

14. What did Jesus say about the one who did not enter the sheepfold by the door? ___________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

PHARISEES

Pharisees were a sect or group of Jews who had a lot of influence among the Jews. Their name means “separatists” or the separated ones. They were good students of the sacred text and believed that the Messiah was coming. However, Pharisees adapted the Law of Moses to suit their own needs and developed traditions that became as important to them as God’s law. Although they kept the outward observance of God’s law carefully, they did it with the wrong motives. That is why Jesus called them hypocrites—they were basically “actors” in trying to keep the Law. They also tended to look down on anyone who did not agree with them and on sinners such as tax collectors and prostitutes. They trusted in themselves, and with them righteousness was an external thing. Jesus tried to teach them that righteousness started with a heart that was right. Observing the Law externally was important, but serving with the right heart was the thing most important to God.

The Life of Christ Lesson 3

LESSON TEXT: Luke 10: 1 – 12: 21

It is not known for certain when these stories in Luke occurred during Jesus’ life. However, it is thought that they occurred during the last six months of Jesus’ life. In the story of the sending of the seventy, we do not know from where He sent out His disciples.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: As you study this lesson think about the care Jesus had for His disciples. He cares for us the same way.

Also, Jesus emphasized what was most important – that their names were written in heaven. This should be the most important thing to us too!

The Life of Christ Lesson 4

LESSON TEXT: Luke 12: 22 – 13: 35, John 10: 22 – 39

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

As we study these scriptures, think about the attitudes, influences and the hypocrisy of the Pharisees. Jesus knew their very thoughts. This should make us think about our attitudes and influence. If God can know the very number of hair upon our heads, can He not know our thoughts?

What are our concerns? Where do we put our energy? Where is our treasure? Are we willing to put Him first, before everything? Are we ready for the Lord when He comes? These are all questions that we need to answer for ourselves.

How do we put these things into practice in our everyday life? Some of the ways are to study His word ( this includes preparing our Bible lesson), attend the assemblies of the church, and obeying Christ’s commands.

John 10: 22 – 39

The feast that is mentioned in the above scripture was not a feast mentioned in the Law of Moses. Secular history tells us that in 164 B.C. a man named Judas Maccabaeus took back the temple after it had been taken and profaned by the Syrians. The Life of Christ Lesson 6

LESSON TEXT: Luke 16: 19 -31; 17: 1 – 10; John 11: 1 - 5411

In this story Jesus points out that while we live is the time to obey God. After we die, it is too late! “Abraham’s bosom” refers to a place of rest and comfort. Those who obey God will go there when they die. Those who disobey God will go to a place of torments where they can receive no comfort or rest.

The next section of verses point out to us that as servants of Christ we are to be in the proper relationship to God. This proper relationship keeps us from the sin of pride. An offense is something that offends; something placed in the way that causes a person to fall. Luke 17: 1- 10

The next story is about the brother of Mary and Martha. His name was Lazarus. The miracle that Jesus performs on Lazarus causes many Jews to believe, however it causes many of the chief priests and Pharisees to worry about their control of the Jewish nation. This fear causes them to make plans to kill Jesus. We are introduced to the Sanhedrin in this lesson. The word “Sanhedrin” is not used in the scripture, but the word “council” is. The Sanhedrin was a council of 71 important Jewish men that included the high priest, members of the high priest’s family, scribes, elders, and leaders of the Jews. Important cases of the Jews were

brought before the Sanhedrin to judge. Later we will see the Sanhedrin take on a prominent role in the crucifixion of Christ. John 11: 1 – 54 11. How did Jesus feel about Martha, Mary and Lazarus? ____________________________________________

JESUS’ JOURNEY: Jesus traveled through Perea toward Jerusalem. He stopped at Bethany, where Lazarus was raised from the dead, then he went to Ephraim. From Ephraim, Jesus traveled back for the feast of the Passover, going through Perea and crossing the Jordan River at Jericho to finally come to Jerusalem.

The Life of Christ Lesson 7

LESSON TEXT: Luke 17: 11 – 18:14; Mark 10: 1 – 16; Matthew 19: 1 - 12

Note: As Jesus teaches, notice that He is trying to get His disciples and others to see that His words are authority and that His words are to be obeyed because they are from God. Jesus is also preparing them for the time that He is go back to the Father and will no longer be on earth. They are to understand that if they obey Him, they will be in His kingdom. Even though Jesus prepares His disciples for all of this, they do not understand the things that will happen to themselves and to the Lord. Luke 17: 11 -19 1. Why did the lepers stand afar off? Luke 17: 20 – 37

In this story some Pharisees ask Jesus when the kingdom of God will come. There were some things that Jesus wanted them to understand about the kingdom, and we need to understand those same things: No one can see Christ’s kingdom; it is not an earthly kingdom; it is a spiritual kingdom that is in the hearts of men; and obedience to that kingdom is how men become citizens of it.

Since the Jews rejected Jesus, Jesus would let the city of Jerusalem be destroyed. It would no longer be God’s chosen city. When it was destroyed no one would expect it.

The next two parables that Jesus teaches deal with prayer. Jesus also asks the question, “ When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?” We need to ask ourselves the question, “ If He comes while I am on earth, will He find that I have faith?”

So far in our lessons we have had to read only one text of scripture for each story. Starting here, many times we will have to read two or three of the gospel records to get the whole of what Jesus taught. Each writer wrote accounts of what Jesus did, and many times there are details in one account that is not in the other account.

The differing details of each account help us to see the authenticity of the accounts. If we all saw an event happen, each one of us would remember and recount the different things that we saw and remembered. This is exactly what the writers of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John do, and this is why we learn different details from each writer. To get the whole of what Jesus taught, we must compare all the accounts.

Mark 10: 1 – 12; Matthew 19: 1 - 12

Jesus teaches on marriage and divorce in this section. The Jews cite the passage in Deuteronomy 24: 1 – 4 to Jesus in trying to justify divorce for any cause. Jesus pointed out to them that God’s arrangement for marriage in the very beginning ( Genesis 2:24) was that a man and woman marry and stay married. The Jews argued with Jesus that Moses authorized them to divorce their wives, but Jesus pointed out that Moses permitted them to do so. Jesus points out God’s law from the beginning, and He also emphasizes His own authority by telling them, “ And I say unto you….” Matt. 19:9.

The Life of Christ Lesson 8

LESSON TEXT: Mark 10: 17 – 52; Luke 18: 18 - 19: 1- 28; Matthew 19: 16- 20: 28

HAVE YOU NOTICED? When Jesus taught the people He did not back off of what He said to them when they rejected Him. He stood firmly by what He taught and He would watch them go. He was consistent in His stand for Truth! We are to pattern ourselves after Him! Many times when Truth is taught people will not like it, but we are not to back off of it, or to compromise. Truth is to be supreme in our lives.

Mark 10: 17 – 31; Matthew 19: 16 – 20:16 ; Luke 18: 18 – 30

There are some things to notice in this story. When Jesus talked to the rich, young ruler He knew the young man’s heart because He is Divine! He also picked out commandments that had to do with human relationships in His talk with the young ruler. The young man had a choice to make in following Jesus, and we have to make the SAME choice. Are we willing to give up all to follow Jesus? Is the truth of the gospel realized ( or lived out) in our hearts and our minds?

We do not see begging much in our society today, but during New Testament days begging was done by those who, because of physical handicap, had no other way to provide food and necessities for themselves ( Matt. 20:30; Lk. 16:20; Acts 3:2). Begging had shame associated with it (Lk. 16:3).

NOBLEMAN JESUS

Was going to a far country. Was going back to heaven. Would return. He will return. Some don’t want him for their king. Some Jews didn’t want Him as their king. He gave his servants responsibilities. He gives us responsibilities. He blessed those who did his will. He blesses us when we do His will. He took from those who didn’t do his will. He doesn’t bless those who don’t do His will. He killed all who did not want him to be king. He will destroy all who reject Him in hell.

The Life of Christ Lesson 9

LESSON TEXT: John 11: 55 – 12: 19; Mark 11: 1 – 15; 14: 1 -9; Matthew 21:1 – 19; 26: 6 -13; Luke 19: 29 – 48

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

The city of Jerusalem was the religious center of the land. The Old Law required Jews to keep the feasts of Passover, Pentecost, and Atonement, and these feasts were celebrated in Jerusalem ( Lev. 23: Deut 16;16). Jews who lived far away did not go to Jerusalem every year, but would go as often as they could. The scriptures record the many countries people came from to the first Pentecost after the resurrection of Jesus Christ ( Acts 2: 9 – 11). In obedience to the Old Law, Jesus went to the feast days. Jerusalem was in the hill country of Palestine, high above the Jordan valley. If you will notice, the scriptures will talk about going “up to Jerusalem”, when the city previously talked about is North of Jerusalem ( example – John 11:55). They went “up to Jerusalem” because Jerusalem was higher in elevation.

John 11: 55 – 12:11; Matthew 26: 6 – 13; Mark 14: 1 – 9

We are now to the section of the last week of Jesus’ physical life here on earth. You will see that many things will happen in this last week – much more than can be studied in one or even a few lessons. Keep in mind that Christ is eternal, and although His physical life on earth ended His spiritual life did not have a beginning or an end. He was raised from the dead to go back to the Father with the glory He had before coming to earth, to sit on the right hand of God. As this lesson begins, it is six days before the Passover. Jesus is in Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. John’s account tells us that Jesus was at Bethany from Friday evening until Sunday morning. Mary anointed Jesus with a very expensive perfume. As she did this, Jesus accepted her worship and told the disciples that she was doing this for His burial. Did Mary understand what was to happen to Jesus? We do not know.

No evidence in the scriptures tells us on what day before the crucifixion the story below happened. Some Greeks had come to worship at the Feast of Passover. A Greek person would not have been a Jew, but a Gentile. There were some Gentiles at that time that were proselytes (a non-Jew who accepted the Law of Moses), or some of them just feared God (they accepted the God of the Jews, but not all of the Law). Perhaps these Greeks fit into one of these categories.

Keep in mind during your study that Jesus’ ( the Son of Man’s) time to be glorified has come.

THINK!

We see over and over in our study how the Jews rejected Jesus and His message. Jesus preached, He worked miracles, He lived a perfect life, yet the Jews, as a whole, did not believe in Him. The Jewish rulers saw the same glory that Isaiah had seen hundreds of years before, yet they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.

Can we be the same way? YES! When we learn about Jesus in God’s word and we reject His message today, we are no better than the Jews were in the New Testament days. We can also love the glory of men more than God. If we think more of what men will say of us than of what God does we love the glory of men first, and that will damn our soul. Each of us has to do some self examination to make sure that we are putting God’s word first in our lives, and that we do not become hardened by rejecting the Word.

John 12:48 "He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him-- the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. (NKJ)

The Life of Christ Lesson 11

LESSON TEXT: Mark 12: 18 – 44; Matthew 22: 23 – 23: 39; Luke 20: 27 – 21:4

SADDUCEES

Like the Pharisees, the Sadducees were a Jewish sect who opposed Jesus. However, the Sadducees were very different from the Pharisees. The Sadducees were composed of people from leading families in the Jewish nation—the priests, merchants, and aristocrats. They were among the more wealthy people and enjoyed political positions of privilege, making alliances with the Herodian sect of the Jews and with Roman rulers. The chief priests usually came from the sect of Sadducees, however they were not primarily concerned with the religious laws of God, but were more concerned with whatever political power they could gain through the priesthood. Notice that Jesus did not have as many dealings with the Sadducees as He did with the Pharisees. That is because they were mainly a political sect. Jesus warned His disciples about their influence in Matthew 16: 6, 11. In Mark 12: 24, Jesus rebuked the Sadducees by telling them that they did not know the scriptures or the power of God. The Sadducees denied the resurrection of the body (Matt. 22:23). Acts 23: 8 tells us that they also denied that there were angels or spirits. As Jesus claims to be the Messiah, and has more conflicts with the Pharisees, the Sadducees become involved with the Pharisees in trying to destroy Jesus. Neither the Pharisees nor Sadducees had an accurate view of Jesus’ kingship or His kingdom. They viewed it as a physical kingdom, not spiritual. This wrong view of Christ’s kingdom would have made the Sadducees fear the loss of their prominence and influence over the Jewish nation. In this lesson, the Sadducees come to Jesus with a question about the resurrection. As you read, notice that their question is not borne out of a sincere wish to find out truth, but out of the desire to ridicule Jesus’ teaching on the resurrection. Up until this time, Jesus had avoided debating the Jewish leaders. He knew that they wanted to kill Him. Notice that Jesus was always in control. He did things at the time He wanted to. When the time for Him to die came, it would not be because the Jews caught Him, but because He allowed Himself to be put into their hands. The time Jesus had left on earth was short. He was not afraid of the Jewish leaders and He condemned them in this section of scriptures. Luke 12:22- 26

22 Then He said to His disciples, "Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on.

23 "Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.

24 "Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds?

25 "And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

26 "If you then are not able to do the least, why are you anxious for the rest?

The Life of Christ Lesson 12

LESSON TEXT: Mark 13; Matt 24; Luke 21: 5 – 36

This lesson deals with a private discussion that Jesus has with His disciples. As the lesson begins, Jesus is leaving the temple. He and His disciples’ journeyed across the Kidron Valley, and up to the Mount of Olives. It is there that Jesus told them of the destruction that would come upon the city of Jerusalem and the temple.
