The Light Volume 10 Issue 9

September 2017

Are you a Christian?

It’s a simple question: Are you a Christian? Yet the answers people give can be surprising.

Some people reply, “Of course, I’m a Christian. I go to church every Sunday.” Other say, “A Christian? Sure. My parents were Christians.” Other people look preplaces, then offer, “I think I am. I’m a good per-son.” And others sputter, “ That’s a personal question you have no right to ask.”

Why do many people struggle to answer? Perhaps the confusion stems from misunderstanding what being a Christian actually means. Complicating the issue is that some people view Christians as pompous, nar-row-minded, hypocritical, and judgmental. Although in some instances those views may be true, such clouded perceptions make conversing about faith less than popular.

So what is a Christian?

A Christian is someone who realizes that in order to have eternal life, he or she must begin a personal rela-tionship with Jesus. With that step, he or she becomes a new creation, a child of God, a Christian

A Christian is someone who:

Recognizes he or she is sinful: “Everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard” (Roman 3:23).

Believes God helps those who admit their need of him: “When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and dies for us sinners” (Romans 5:6).

Asks God to extend his life-giving mercy: “God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead” (Ephesians 2:4-5).

Is aware that God will turn ono one away who comes to him “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13). “He gave his one and only Son {Jesus}, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

You aren’t born a Christian, nor can you claim to be one because you’re a good person. It requires a per-sonal decision.

Are you a Christian? You can answer this simple question with confidence. Make the decision to follow Christ today.

A word from our Pastor

I am pleased to announce my wife, Pat, will teach and I will assist her in the topical study of David Jeremiah’s book, “Slaying the Giants in Your Life”. We will take a look at one “giant” each month and encourage you to get the book to read if you like.

Please make plans to join us on the 3rd Thursday of each month @ 7:00 p.m. for this important Bible Study! May God’s Spirit give us spiritual insights to live victorious Christian lives!

Sunday School News

We had two with perfect attendance for the month of August!!! Tatum and Justin so when you see these two dedicated students please don’t forget to congratulate them for their efforts!!!!

I would like to have a meeting/training with all the youth Sunday School teach-ers! September 24, right after church…a light lunch will be provided. Please make every effort to attend.

We are still looking for volunteers to help with Children’s Church. Please don’t let your fear of not knowing what needs to be done for this part of worship keep you from serving. I will be glad to help you with preparation and give you ideas. I say this over and over ….our children are our future “church”….so let’s fill them with His word and “turn them on” to Jesus while there is still time.

Love and Blessings,

Deb
