EASY FOR ENBIHAAR INTHE LILLIE LANGTRY
With Manuela de Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) ruled out of
Saturday=s G2 Qatar Lillie Langtry S. at Goodwood, the way was
paved for last year=s winner Enbihaar (Ire) (Redoute=s Choice
{Aus}) to enjoy a saunter around the Downs and she duly
delivered with the minimum of fuss against two rivals. Last seen
finishing fourth in the 12-furlong G2 Princess of Wales=s S. on
her seasonal bow at Newmarket on July 9, Shadwell=s 1-2
favourite stayed close to the 3-year-old Snow (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})
throughout the early stages and once sent past that rival passing
the two-furlong pole drew away strongly to score by 3 1/2
lengths from Cabaletta (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}).
One of last term=s most improved performers, Enbihaar
proved a formidable runner when granted suitably lively
conditions and a distance of ground and went from success in
the G2 Lancashire Oaks to this win and another in Doncaster=s
G2 Park Hill S. in September. Third when undone by testing
ground in the G1 Prix de Royallieu at ParisLongchamp in
October, the same underfoot conditions meant that she was
below-par on her return at the July meeting but everything fell
perfectly into place for this repeat of 12 months ago. Despite
giving away weight-for-age to a younger duo with smart form,
the imposing bay never looked likely to become the subject of
an upset and is primed for a potentially profitable remainder of
the campaign. Cont. p2
CLASSIC WIN STILL A SUCCESS STORY FOR
SELLERSBy Emma Berry
There are good reasons for smaller trainers, owners and
breeders to do their equine shopping at the drafts of the major
breeding operations at horses-in-training and breeding stock
sales. If buying a filly or young broodmare there is the potential
for updates from well-managed families, members of which
likely remain in their breeders= broodmare bands. For the colts
and geldings there is always the hope that a slower-maturing
individual may well just have been deemed surplus to
requirements and can go on to be a star in another stable over
time. There are umpteen examples of thisCthe ,2,800 purchase
Sceptical (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) being just one who has
made headlines since being bought from Godolphin and
continuing his career for James McAuley and trainer Denis
Hogan. Cont. p6

Easy For Enbihaar In The Lillie Langtry cont. from p1
That could come over excess of this trip according to the
operation=s Racing Manager Angus Gold. AIt=s unlike Sheikh
Hamdan to keep an older mare in training and I=m glad to see
that rewarded with another group win,@ he commented. AIt=s
good to see her show her old enthusiasm and that amazing
stride of hers. I=ll talk to John and see what the options are, but
Jim said she=ll stay two miles any day. She doesn=t want the
ground too soft, but I would have thought the [G2 Qipco British
Champions] Long Distance Cup [at Ascot on Oct. 17] would be an
option.@
Pedigree Notes Enbihaar is a half-sister to Godolphin=s G2 International
Topkapi Trophy runner-up Silent Attack (GB) (Dream Ahead) and
to the listed-placed King Bolete (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}). They are
out of Chanterelle (Fr) (Trempolino), a full-sister to the G3 Prix

Masaka S. winner and G1 1000 Guineas third Vista Bella (GB)

Spectacular Joke (Spectacular Bid), whose leading performer
was the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Amonita (Anabaa).

RAABIHAH BACK IN THE GROOVE Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum=s Raabihah (Sea the
Stars {Ire}), who went untested as a juvenile, was up with the
larks for a Jan. 23 debutantes= heat win at Cagnes-sur-Mer and
doubled up with an impressive tally in ParisLongchamp=s May 14
Listed Prix de la Seine before posting a commendable fourth,
despite a troubled trip, pitched into Chantilly=s rescheduled July
5 G1 Prix de Diane in her latest outing. Sent off as the 2-5 lock
on a retrieval mission in Saturday=s G3 Prix de Psyche Sky Sports
Racing over 10 furlongs at Deauville, the homebred chestnut did
not disappoint her legion of supporters and booked a ticket to
France=s end-of-season gala with a performance which simply
oozed class. She was positioned several lengths off the
pacesetting Arriviste (GB) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) in fourth until
improving one spot as the field bunched on the home turn.
Overpowering toiling rivals once quickening in style for control
approaching the final furlong, Raabihah surged clear in hand to
easily dismiss Listed Prix Finlande victress Wangari (Ger) (Soldier
Hollow {GB}) by an impressive 3 1/2 lengths with Wangari=s
Andre Fabre-trained stablemate Alkandora (GB) (Nathaniel
{Ire}) emerging best of the remainder, finishing 3/4-of-a-length
farther back in third. AI think what we have seen here today is a
Group 1 filly,@ said winning trainer Jean-Claude Rouget, who
sent out Luna Kya (Fr) (Kendor {Fr}) to win this in 2001 and
subsequent MGISW distaffer Zagora (Fr) (Green Tune) in 2010.

Raabihah has her sights set on the Arc | Scoop Dyga
Rouget continued, AWe knew that before, of course, but we
missed the opportunity to win a big one in the Diane where she
had an awful trip and didn=t have enough experience to get
herself out of trouble. We have been in racing long enough to
know that these things happen. The pace was good today and
the further she was going the more she was opening up on the
rest.@
Rouget is now zoning in on targets back at the highest level
with October=s G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe the ultimate goal
this year. AFor me, she is the best French filly around and she=s
not even running over her distance. We know she is a genuine
mile-and-a-half filly, with her second and third dams both being
Oaks winners, and the plan is to now go straight to the [Sept. 13
G1 Prix] Vermeille and then the [Oct. 4 G1 Prix de l=] Arc [de
Triomphe at ParisLongchamp].@
Pedigree Notes Raabihah is one of two winners and the leading performer
produced by Garmoosha (Kingmambo), who was bred to Noble
Mission (GB) this year. The fourth of six foals, she is a half-sister
to Listed Wait A While S. third Filfila (Kitten=s Joy), a yearling filly
by Kitten=s Joy and a 2020 More Than Ready filly. Her dam is an
unraced half to G1 Fillies= Mile third Firdaws (Mr. Greeley) out of
G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Eswarah (GB) (Unfuwain), who in turn is
a daughter of MG1SW G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Epsom Oaks
heroine Midway Lady (Alleged). The latter also produced G1
Irish 1000 Guineas third Umniyatee (GB) (Green Desert) and G3
Princess Royal S. victrix Itnab (GB) (Green Desert), who in turn is
the dam of stakes-winning G3 Al Shindagha Sprint runner-up
Alazeyab (El Prado {Ire}) and Peruvian Group 3 placegetter
Madera de Guerrero (Street Cry {Ire}). Descendants of
Umniyatee include Argentina=s G1 Presidente da Republica
victor Maltes (Brz) (Red Runner).

Stalking the pace set by Wedding Dance (Ire) (Invincible Spirit

7-5 favourite was nudged along to launch her challenge off the

slender advantage at the eighth pole to deny that rival by 3/4-
of-a-length for a first black-type rosette. Coeursamba (Fr) (The

Classic Win Still A Success For Sellers cont. from p1 Juddmonte, Shadwell and Godolphin routinely have large
drafts catalogued for formal sales as well as conducting private
transactions for certain individuals and, while a number of
Ballydoyle trainees will be offered at the Tattersalls
Horses-in-Training Sale each autumn, many more will be sold
privately throughout the season. It is not uncommon for there
to be multiple runners from Ballydoyle in some of the top races
in Europe. The best fillies naturally eventually retire to the
Coolmore broodmare band, but only a handful of the very best
colts will secure a berth in
the stallion yard. Those
below that level, however,
can present some decent
opportunities for other
connections, as the recent
G2 Derby Italiano victory of
Tuscan Gaze (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}) highlighted. The colt,
who was bred by Coolmore
in partnership with Lady
Bamford=s Daylesford Stud,
was previously unbeaten in
two starts for John Gosden
and was bought by
jockey-turned-bloodstock
agent Freddy Tylicki for
Italian-based Mag Horse Racing SRL just weeks before his Classic
success. Jamie Moriarty of Coolmore=s racing office is in regular
contact with agents and trainers on the lookout for such
prospects. He says, ASome may be of the opinion that we
wouldn=t be overjoyed at selling winners like that but in fact
nothing could be further from the truth. Results like this bolster
the relationships we are continually seeking to develop and
maintain, and of course there=s also the pedigree update for the
horse=s dam and relatives at home. So all in all, we couldn=t be
happier for everyone concerned.@
He adds, ATuscan Gaze=s recent success in the Italian Derby has
received some great coverage, and rightly so. I suppose it could
be perceived as something of a fairytale, and for none more so
than Freddy Tylicki, but in reality we would like to think that this
fairytale is played out with increasing regularity.@
There has long been a flow of horses from Ballydoyle to the
Australian stable of leading owners Lloyd and Nick Williams,
whose thirst to win the Melbourne Cup appears to be
unquenchable. Rekindling (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}) provided
the father and son with their sixth victory in the Cup and was a
memorable first for Joseph O=Brien, whose stable he has
recently rejoined after a stint in Australia under the care of Liam
Howley, who now trains the G2 Herbert Power S. winner
Yucatan (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Last year=s eye-catching third-place
finisher Il Paradiso (Galileo {Ire}), who was just a neck behind
the winner Vow And Declare (Aus) (Declaration Of War), has
remained in Australia and has joined Chris Waller=s stable after
being sold to a syndicate which includes Ozzie Kheir. Among the
other Ballydoyle graduates now in Australia are Galileo=s sons
Southern France (Ire), who won the G2 Zipping Classic for Ciaron
Maher and David Eustace, and G1 Caulfied S. winner Cape Of
Good Hope (Ire), who is now trained by David and Ben Hayes
and Tom Dabernig.
AMany will remember
Rekindling and Johannes
Vermeer going head-to-head
in the Melbourne Cup, two
Coolmore horses that had
been sold to Australians
Lloyd and Nick Williams,@
says Moriarty. AThe
Melbourne Cup provides one
of the best examples through
the likes of Rekindling,
Johannes Vermeer and Il
Paradiso, a horse I suspect
will be very much in the
reckoning again this year.@
He adds, AAs we retire only
two or three new stallions each year to Coolmore, there are
plenty of horses for sale and this presents terrific opportunities
for clients old and new to get involved.
AOur team here takes calls and enquiries every day from the
most far-reaching countries about prospective sales of
racehorses and breeding stock alike. If clients have races they
would like to target, be it on turf or dirt, Northern or Southern
Hemisphere we will have plenty of options for them. Freddy had
a week to find an Italian Derby winner and we were able to
work it out.@

Cont. from p6
Hong Kong has also been a happy hunting ground for former
Ballydoyle trainees, with River Dancer (Ire), the Sadler=s Wells
half-brother to Dar Re Mi (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}), having won the
G1 Audemars Piguet QE II Cup for The Hon. Ronald Arculli
following his export from Ireland. Four years later, Archipenko,
now the sire of Group 1-winning brothers Time Warp (GB) and
Glorious Forever (GB) in Hong Kong, won that same race after
he was sold to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum and
joined Mike de Kock=s team of globetrotters.
The same owner-trainer team also won the G1 Hong Kong Cup
with Eagle Mountain (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), who was
runner-up to Authorized (Ire) in the Derby when trainer by
Aidan O=Brien. A little closer to home, the one-time Derby fancy
Amedeo Modigliani (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is now in the stable of
Spain=s champion trainer Guillermo Arizkorreta and has won his
only start in Spain=s premier mile race, the Gran Premio Claudio
Carudel.
AIf you look at any of the bigger races across the globe, you will
note Coolmore graduates amongst the rolls of honour,@ says
Moriarty. AMaster of Hounds, Mikhail Glinka (GB), Stagelight
(Ire) and Viscount Nelson went on to score at the highest levels
in Dubai. Joshua Tree (Ire), Ballingarry (Ire), Frost Giant, Tannery
(Ire), Heatseeker (Ire) and Brahms were all at the top of their
game on the other side of the Atlantic. So whether it=s a
Canadian International, a Singapore, Hollywood, Hong Kong or
Italian Derby winner you=re looking for, we have been lucky
enough to have them
through our hands. Not to
mention of course the
Cheltenham and Group 1
winners over jumps.@
Ah, yes. For an outfit so
focused on winning
Europe=s top
middle-distance races,
there will be plenty among
them with sufficient
stamina to excel in the
National Hunt division,
such as G1 JCB Triumph
Hurdle winner Ivanovich
Gorbatov (Ire) (Montjeu
{Ire}).
AAs the primary focus of
Ballydoyle each year is to retire the next Sadler=s Wells or
Galileo we would rarely have a gelding in training there,
although in plenty of instances there will be improvement to
come from these animals when they are gelded,@ says Moriarty.
AWe don=t strictly sell colts only. The broodmare band takes
continual management and, like the racehorse string, we can=t
keep them all. There are a number of fillies that are offered
privately each year. In cases where we have the dam and maybe
a sister or two at home we would offer some for sale. This is
where some of the best opportunities lie.@
One recent fortunate beneficiary of this is the new owner of
Peach Tree (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who was already a Group 3
winner in her own right when sold less than 12 months ago.
Since then, her full-sister Love (Ire) has announced herself as
arguably the best 3-year-old filly in training.
Another daughter of Galileo was a similarly good purchase for
Australian breeder Bob Scarborough, whose purchase of
Cabaret (Ire) and her subsequent mating with Invincible Spirit
(Ire) resulted in him breeding the 2000 Guineas winner Magna
Grecia (Ire), who was bought by MV Magnier for 340,000gns.
Moriarty adds, AWe have since gone back to buy a couple of
her progeny, including Magna Grecia and the very promising St
Mark=s Basilica who looked a smart sort on his debut last week.@
ROTHSCHILD CENTRE STAGE ON SUNDAY Deauville stages the first of its August features on Sunday, with
the fillies and mares granted the opportunity to strike at the
highest level in the G1 Prix Rothschild. Alexander Tamagni-
Bodmer and Regula Vannod=s Watch Me (Fr) (Olympic Glory
{Ire}) sets the standard, having won last year=s
G1 Coronation S. and
finished third in the G1 Prix
de l=Opera and she looked
primed for another big
effort when taking the
course-and-distance Listed
Prix de la Calonne on July
12. Trainer Francis-Henri
Graffard is expecting a bold
show. AShe is in great form
and has improved a lot
since her seasonal
comeback three weeks
ago,@ he said. AIt=s a Group
1 and they are always hard
to win, but I could not be
happier with her
condition.@
Watch Me meets Godolphin=s >TDN Rising Star= Summer

improved performance when taking Epsom=s G3 Princess

The Lir Jet | Scoop Dyga
Prix Rothschild preview cont.
Enjoying the run of the race there, she still managed to beat
three classy fillies in Cloak of Spirits (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}),
Rose of Kildare (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) and Onassis (Ire)
(Dubawi {Ire}) and Charlie Appleby is hoping she can build on
that confidence boost. AWe were very pleased with the
performance of Summer Romance at Epsom and she came out
of the race well,@ he said. AShe made the running there, but
doesn=t have to go from the front--it wasn=t the plan to make it
last time out but nobody else wanted to go on, so we took the
bull by the horns. We feel that this is a good opportunity to
hopefully step up to Group 1 level.@
Another who is looking to make a jump forward is Qatar
Racing Limited=s July 1 G3 Derrinstown Stud Fillies S. scorer
Know It All (GB) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}), but the manner of her
success in that Leopardstown mile contest suggests she can
make an impact. Trainer Johnny Murtagh said, AShe=s going
there in great form, hopefully. Sheikh Fahad picked this race out
and I=m glad he did because it=s a fillies= only Group 1 with six
runners. There are obviously some good ones in it.@ One of
those is Rashit Shaykhutdinov=s G1 Poule d=Essai des Pouliches
runner-up Speak of the Devil (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), who
is back over a mile having failed to stay the 10 1/2-furlong trip of
the G1 Prix de Diane at Chantilly on July 5. She is probably still
underestimated and this could be her chance to make amends
for her unlucky defeat in the June 1 Classic here.
In the G3 Darley Prix de Cabourg, which has been won in
recent times by Dabirsim (Fr) (Hat Trick {Jpn}), Ervedya (Fr)
(Siyouni {Fr}) and Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal), the 2-year-olds
get a chance to prove worthy of a tilt at the upcoming G1 Prix
Morny over the same six-furlong trip. There does not look to be
an Earthlight among the domestic contingent this year and, as
ever, there is a strong British challenge via the July 18 Listed
Rose Bowl S. runner-up Mighty Gurkha (Ire) (Sepoy {Aus}) and
the unbeaten Cairn Gorm (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}).
At Dusseldorf, there is Classic action with the 162nd renewal
of the 11-furlong G1 Henkel-Preis der Diana seeing a formidable
collection of foreign raiders. Francis-Henri Graffard has already
taken one of Germany=s Classics after In Swoop (Ire) (Adlerflug
{Ger}) caused an upset in the G1 Deutsches Derby and is back
again with another import from this country in Tickle Me Green
(Ger) (Sea the Moon {Ger}). Third in the G3 Prix de la Grotte at
ParisLongchamp on May 11 and ninth in the G1 Poule d=Essai
des Pouliches at Deauville on June 1 when under the care of
Andre Fabre, Gestut Gorlsdorf=s homebred made her debut for
Graffard a winning one in the Listed Prix Madame Jean Couturie
over 10 furlongs at Vichy on July 20.
Gary Barber and Team Valor International=s Silence Please
(Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) beat her stablemate and subsequent
G1 Nassau S. runner-up One Voice (Ire) (Poet=s Voice {GB}) in
the 10-furlong Listed Salsabil S. at Navan on June 10 before
finishing third behind Even So (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) under a
penalty in the July 4 Listed Naas Oaks Trial. That form may be
good enough in this context with no stand-out among the
German brigade. One of the least exposed of them is Gestut
Wittekindshof=s Elle Memory (Ger) (Maxios {GB}), the Peter
Schiergen-trained daughter of the prolific Elle Danzig (Ger) (Roi
Danzig) who captured this in 1998 when it was a Group 2. The
second dam of Saturday=s Listed Chalice S. winner Katara (Fr)
(Deep Impact {Jpn}), her Shamardal filly Elle Shadow was second
in this in 2010. Although it would make a nice story if Elle
Memory is to go one better, she has to progress some way from
her narrow defeat of Sister Lulu (Ger) (Jukebox Jury {Ire}) in the
10 1/2-furlong Listed Preis Dusseldorf on June 21.
THE LIR JET HEADED TO PHOENIX
G2 Norfolk S. winner The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince Of Lir {Ire}),
beaten a head when second in the July 19 G2 Prix Robert Papin,
is set for next Sunday=s G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. at The Curragh.
The Qatar Racing colourbearer was originally slated for the Aug.
21 Nunthorpe S. against elders, but trainer Michael Bell said that
is likely off the table now.

FIRST-SEASON SIRESWITH RUNNERS
Lir Jet to Phoenix cont.
AThe Lir Jet worked well this morning,@ Bell said. AHe is likely to
go to Ireland now for the Phoenix S. as plans have been made to
get him there. We were thinking of the Nunthorpe, but we
thought while he is in great order we may as well give him
another chance [at six furlongs]. He just got beat in France on
the nod and it was a case of one having its head up and the
other having its head down. We could end up dropping back
down to five with him, but there are no Group 1 2-year-old-only
five-furlong races around and with the penalty he would have to
carry in other races we thought it was sensible to try him at six.@
He added, AYou can never rule anything out, but I would say it
is highly unlikely he would run in the Nunthorpe as well, as he
would have been to France and Ireland and then coming back
for a Nunthorpe would be quite a lot for a 2-year-old. If he was
to win we would rest on laurels for a bit, if he finished a good
second or third we could then look at the Flying Childers.@
FORMER JUMPS JOCKEY MELLOR DIES Stan Mellor, who was the first jumps jockey to ride 1,000
winners, has died aged 83.
Mellor retired from the saddle in 1972 after riding 1,034
winners and went on to a successful training career with jumps
and flat horses, training more than 700 winners.
Brough Scott, who started as an amateur rider when Mellor
was in his prime and has since gone on to a career in sports
writing and broadcasting, paid tribute to his former colleague,
saying, AHe was a pioneer and a mentor, and a worker for other
people. But he was a brilliant, brilliant champion jockey--the
ultimate brain over brawn. He could do things others couldn=t--
people have a particular shot they can play in cricket, or a move
at football. Stan Mellor, wow. He was amazing.
AHis particular thing, over fences--to do with his show-jumping
background--he would wind a horse up and launch it at the last
fence with a rhythm and power that would be a match-winning
leap. They never missed--he had it down to a tee, and when he
wound them up like that, he knew what he had beneath him,
and he timed it for an unbelievable match-winning blow. It was
absolutely extraordinary, a byword--no one else did it like that.@
Scott said Mellor also enjoyed mentoring young riders and
advocating for jockeys= welfare.
AHe did more for jockeys than anyone else has ever done, or
ever will,@ he said. AAt the time when jockeys were only just
getting themselves organised, he was the pioneer for
everything; new helmets, backpads, concrete posts, insurance.
The Jockeys= Association had only just started, but he=d be the
brightest person at the meeting with the head of Levy Board and
such.
AHe was very, very good at training youngsters. He always
wanted to share his knowledge--he was a tremendous person to
go and talk to. I=ll rejoice in his life, although it=s infinitely sad to
think of him not being there any more.@

Winning her third start by five lengths on the Polytrack at
Kempton at the start of last month, Katara continued her
upward trajectory to register an impressive first black-type
success. Tracking the early pace in mid-division, the homebred
was sent to the front passing the two-furlong pole and stayed on
strongly on the uphill climb to stamp her superiority on affairs.
ASir Michael liked her coming into the race and she is
progressing,@ her rider commented. AHer dam stayed a mile and
six, but this filly is not short of gears. We will see what Sir
Michael wants to do, but she could stay at a mile and a half for
the moment. I=m sure Sir Michael will go step by step with her.
She could end up getting to a high level.@

Showing what a resolute stayer he is when recording an
emphatic success in the Listed Rose Bowl S. on the Rowley Mile
over two miles here in September, the 2017 Cesarewitch H.

his weight in Ascot=s G1 Gold Cup June 18 and the G3 Henry II S.
at Sandown July 5. Sent on by Oisin Murphy from the outset
here, the strapping bay saw off his three rivals one by one in
another stamina-packed display. Assistant trainer Harry Charlton
said, AWe could go and have a look at the [G2] Lonsdale Cup at

miles might be more suitable. We will have a discussion with the
owner as he may want to go to Australia again afterwards.@

Get Shirty, unraced as a juvenile, won one of eight sophomore
starts last year and notched a May 18 Chantilly handicap score
going 15 furlongs on seasonal return before running third back
over that course and distance in the June 14 G2 Prix Vicomtesse
Vigier on black-type bow last time. Stalking the leading duo in
third for most of this marathon, he was angled to the far-side
rail for his challenge with 350 metres remaining and was not for
catching once seizing control soon after to claim a career high.
AHe took a lot of time to mature and only now is able to give
his best,@ commented winning trainer Christophe Ferland. AI
think he won quite well today, even though he lost a shoe
during the race, and the plan is to come back here for the [G2]
Prix Kergorlay. If all goes well and he makes the race and we can
travel, we=ll then take him to Australia for the [G1] Melbourne
Cup.@

SILVANO STARS AGAIN AT NATIONAL SALE Saturday=s second and final session of the Bloodstock South
Africa National Yearling sale saw seven additional seven-figure
(Rand) lots added to the top of the price list. Maine Chance
Farms=s champion sire Silvano (Ger) had been the star of day
one, responsible for the top four lots including the sale-leading
R7-million colt (,313,406/i348,135), and he once again
provided the top two on Saturday. The leading light was Maine
Chance=s colt (lot 329) bought by Anthony Beck for R2.3-million
(,102,976/i114,387). He is the second foal out of the G1 SA
Oaks winner Pine Princess (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}), who has an
as-yet unraced 2-year-old full-brother.
Wilgerbosdrift sold the sale=s two highest-priced colts on
Friday and they provided another highlight on Saturday in the
form of lot 251, a Silvano half-brother to Group 3 winner Folk
Dance (SAf) (Tiger Ridge) and the Classic-placed Capoeira (SAf)
(Oratorio {Ire}). He was bought by Form Bloodstock for R1.6-
million (,71,635/i79,573).
Young sire Gimmethegreenlight (Aus) was the one to break up
Silvano=s momentum on the leaderboard, with a colt (lot 366)
sold for R1.4-million (,62,681/i69,627) to Form=s Jehan
Malherbe. Malherbe paid the same price for lot 453, a rare
offering in this country by Uncle Mo. The colt is the second foal
out of Ubiquitous Mantle (Ire) (Alhaarth {Ire}), a three-time
winner in Ireland the U.S. and a granddaughter of the G1
Yorkshire Oaks winner Roseate Tern (GB) (Blakeney {GB}).
Unsurprisingly in the COVID era, figures were slightly off from
last year=s returns. From 478 yearlings catalogued over the two-
day sale, 341 were offered and 294 sold for an aggregate of
R86,915,000 (,3,891,393/i4,322,601). Last year, 438 had been
sold over three days for R139,380,000
(,6,240,377/i6,931,877). The average dipped 7.2% to
R295,629 (,13,236/i14,702), while the median was down 8.6%
at R160,000 (,7,163/i7,957).

IMPROBABLE GIVESBAFFERT BACK-TO-BACK
WHITNEY VICTORIES
>TDN Rising Star= Improbable (City Zip) scored back-to-back
Grade I victories and provided his conditioner Bob Baffert with
his second straight renewal of Saratoga=s prestigious GI Whitney
S. Saturday with a dominant score in this >Win and You=re In=
event for the GI Breeders= Cup Classic. Baffert won last year=s
renewal with McKinzie (Street Sense), who was entered in
Saturday=s GI Bing Crosby S., but was scratched.
Heavily Favored Tom=s d=Etat (Smart Strike) missed the break
and was relegated to last early as native New Yorker Mr. Buff
(Friend or Foe) took command, loping through early splits of
:25.12 and :49.74 with 3-1 shot Improbable keeping close tabs
from second. Improbable seized command from Mr Buff as
three-quarters went in 1:13.36 with MGSW By My Standards
(Goldencents) charging up behind him. Improbable powered
clear at the top of the lane and it was all over from there as the
flashy chestnut rolled home to a two-length victory. By My
Standards held on for second over Tom=s d=Etat. Last term=s
GI Runhappy Travers S. hero Code of Honor (Noble Mission
{GB}) could only manage fourth over a tiring Mr. Buff.
"He got up really quick and he put me in the race,@ said
winning pilot Irad Ortiz. AI just took a little hold because Mr Buff
looked like the speed of the race. I put him in second in the
clear, like we wanted and went from there.@ Cont. p3
ECHO TOWN SCORES BREAKOUT WIN IN
JERKENS L & N Racing=s Echo Town (Speightstown) registered his first
win at the highest level with a 7-1 upset in Saratoga=s GI H. Allen
Jerkens Memorial S. Presented by Runhappy Saturday. The bay
raced in mid-pack early as recent GI Woody Stephens S.
Presented by Claiborne hero No Parole (Violence) doled out a
first quarter in :22.67 with MGSW Mischevious Alex (Into
Mischief) pressing from second. Mischevious Alex turned up the
heat on No Parole as the half went in :45.31 and Tap It to Win
(Tapit) ranged up menacingly on their outside turning for home.
Echo Town swung out four wide at the top of the lane and
swiftly inhaled the top three in mid-stretch, charging clear to a
dominant 3 1/2-length victory. Tap It to Win held second and
>TDN Rising Star= Shoplifted (Into Mischief) completed the
trifecta. Favored No Parole faded to ninth. Cont. p5

Improbable | Sarah Andrew
The Whitney winner=s circle | Sarah Andrew
Whitney cont. from p1
Ortiz continued, AHe was comfortable. By the backside, we felt
pressure but by his own he started picking it up. I let him do his
thing because they were going really slow so I let him go early.
When I asked him turning for home, he responded really well.
ABig race. Big race,@ said co-owner WinStar Farm=s Elliott
Walden. AObviously, we had to get over the gate [issues] a little
bit and Irad and the gate crew did a wonderful job. He broke
great, Irad had him in a super position and felt great all the way
around there. Bob had him ready to go, as usual, when he
comes East. When he got in the position that we had hoped for,
which was kind of tracking Mr. Buff, we felt really good. Then
they throw up kind of easy fractions. But, he's just a different
horse this year. That's his second Grade I in a row. He got beat
by Tom's d'Etat in his first start at Oaklawn, but he's set up for a
big year and we're just excited to continue that.@
As for the beaten favorite, Tom d=Etat, jockey Joel Rosario said,
"He stumbled coming out. There was a lot going on. He was
standing fine, he just missed the break. It changed my plan
because I had to really get riding from there. I couldn't take my
time. I thought the pace was fine. Even after that, I was not too
far from the lead. It looked like I was in a good spot. But
stumbling coming out of the gate, I lost ground right away."
A perfect three-for-three as a juvenile, including his first top-
level success in the GI Los Alamitos Futurity, Improbable faced
his first defeat when second in last term=s GII Rebel S. and filled
the same spot behind Omaha Beach (War Front) in the
GI Arkansas Derby last term. Fifth, but promoted to fourth as
the tepid favorite in the GI Kentucky Derby, the $200,000
KEESEP buy finished sixth in last year=s GI Preakness S., after
which he was given a brief freshening. Making a successful
comeback in the Shared Belief S. at Del Mar, he was fourth in
the GI Pennsylvania Derby in September and could only manage
fifth in the GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile Nov. 2. Coming up just 3/4
of a length short of Tom=s d=Etat in the Oaklawn Mile Apr. 11,
Improbable flashed signs of his impressive juvenile form when
running off to a 3 1/4-length success in the GI Hollywood Gold
Cup S. going 10 panels in Arcadia June 6. Cont. p4

Echo Town runs away from the Allen Jerkens field | Sarah Andrew
WHITNEY DAY GENERATES RECORD ALL-
SOURCES HANDLE Saturday's 12-race GI Whitney S. Day card generated an
all-sources handle record of $35,796,435, eclipsing the previous
Whitney Day record of $31,835,863 set in 2019.
2019 Whitney Day, which was held Aug. 3, saw paid
attendance of 40,791 with fans on the grounds of Saratoga
wagering $4,658,622.
Jerkens cont. from p1
AHe ran an excellent race,@ winning trainer Steve Asmussen
said. AIt's extremely significant winning the Allen Jerkens.
Ricardo [Santana] did a great job with him today. I think the
timing for him was better going into today than the Woody
Stephens, and he showed it today. I thought 22 and 3 was soft
for this group. I thought Echo Town ran the race of his life and
Shoplifted, who was second in the [GI] Hopeful last year here
obviously likes this track.@ Cont. p6

Steve Asmussen & Ricardo Santana | Sarah Andrew
Echo Town | Sarah Andrew
The Hall of Famer continued, AIt was great to see him put it all
together when it matters so much on this stage. He ran solidly
here. He ran really well into the Woody Stephens, but I thought
the timing of this race was better.@
AHe broke really sharp today and when the dirt started hitting
him in the face, he was jumping a little bit but he was really
comfortable,@ Santana said. AI took him outside and he gave me
a nice kick at the end. He was traveling really well. I knew there
was plenty of speed today and I just wanted to sit behind the
speed. I'm really happy with the horse.@
A debut winner at the Fair Grounds Jan. 18, Echo Town was
third next out at Oaklawn Feb. 23 and returned to winning ways
in the slop there Mar. 13. Missing by a head in the Bachelor S. in
Hot Springs Apr. 25, he captured a Churchill Downs sprint
May 25 prior to his effort in the Woody June 20 at Belmont.
Pedigree Notes:
Echo Town is the 18th Grade I victory for his sire Speightstown,
as well as the 56th graded winner and 113th black-type scorer
for the WinStar stallion. Out of GSW Letgomyecho, the winner is
a half to Grade III victor J Boys Echo and GSP Unbridled Outlaw
(Unbridled=s Song). The 18-year-old mare is also responsible for
the 2-year-old colt Burrow (Candy Ride {Arg}), a $200,000
OBSAPR buy; a yearling filly by Gun Runner; and an American
Pharoah filly born May 8 of this year.
