Jonah – and the *****

No – don’t say it! There has to be more to Jonah than the ‘thing’ youremember from Sunday school. This year’s Bible Month in June is basedaround Jonah. There are four weeks in June and, happily, four chapters inJonah – so – one a week. Just don’t mention the … well, you know what.

There are some big themes in four chapters of Jonah which this month’spreachers will no doubt explore. Jonah finds God, blowing up a big storm –but is confident that he worships the God who made this creation. How dowe deal with God the creator when much of the creation is in chaos? Jonahruns away from God – I know his feeling! Do you? And what does it feellike when God comes searching for you? Jonah is sent on a mission to avery disreputable place, Nineveh, to talk about God.

Now, I know, we all struggle to talk of God in public – Jonah challenges usto do just that. Some say the book is trying to encourage the Israelites – orus – to be less exclusive and share their faith more broadly. And what aboutforgiveness? And God’s nature? Jonah is outraged that God might forgivethe people who have just repented – think elder brother in the ‘prodigalson’ story. Jonah challenges our perception of a vengeful God in the OldTestament. Above all, Jonah is a story, not of one who is called to turnothers back to God, but a story of how God calls Jonah – or you and me –to turn back to him. Big themes indeed.

The early Christians took Jonah’s three days in the stomach of a – no, Ican’t mention it – to be a metaphor for Christ in the grave, awaiting theresurrection; God’s forgiveness of Nineveh to be a sign of the new life inChrist.

“I called to the Lord out of my distress, and he answered me; out of thebelly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice.” (Jonah 2: 2)

There – and I didn’t even mention the ‘whale’!

Stewards’ NotesBrenda Syratt

How time flies by when kept busy. I still rememberwriting an article for The Link just after I became a Steward. This monthsees the start of my third year as a Steward and I am delighted to be able tosay that we are fortunate to have a full complement of Stewards with whichto start the year.

The past two years have been an interesting, informative, educational andmost of all inspirational time enabling me to grow my knowledge and faithat the same time. It is amazing the number of jobs that go on behind thescenes and, indeed, the number of people involved. I am looking forward tothis next year with interest and enthusiasm.

A new challenge for us all in this coming year is the new legislationregarding Data. Please read the advertisement for a Data Champion. Yes,again we need you to consider prayerfully whether you have the time andskills to assist with the first step of our compliance.

Are you a Data Champion? Can you help us to go

Men’s FellowshipDon Turpitt (8026 7128)

Our annual Church Service took place on Sunday evening6th May led by our President, Rev Peter Cornick.

The first reading was from Jeremiah 51: 15-19 read by Bill Mercer. Thisextract gives praise to God who created the world and heavens anddespises those who worship false gods. The second reading came from 2Timothy1: 3-14 and was read by Derek Hill. This was Paul’s second letterto Timothy in which Paul gives thanks to God as he remembers Timothy’ssincere faith. Paul encourages him not to be ashamed of the Gospel or ofPaul, but to take part in suffering for the Good News and to continue inwitnessing for our Saviour Jesus.

Peter referred to the three qualities of Thankfulness, Suffering andWitnessing in his sermon and also gave us his thoughts on his ministry atChandler’s Ford, and his coming ministry in London. Just as Peter thankseveryone for their support during his ministry here, so we thank him for hissincere and faithful witness to us and wish him, Helen and Daniel, God’sblessing in the continuation of their witness for Him. Our next mainmeeting will be our AGM on Wednesday 10th October and in themeantime we continue with snooker and bowls.

Women’s FellowshipBarbara Hillier

1/5 Janice Bennett spoke about some Hampshire ‘Follies’.These are buildings, usually in the grounds of large houses, which have noparticular use and come in various forms, some of which are described as‘Eye-catchers’, ‘Hermitages’ and ‘Grottoes.’

We heard the history and saw pictures of such buildings at Cranbury Park,Highclere Castle, Staunton Park and St Nicholas Church at NorthStoneham. We also saw a folly on the Hanger at Selborne, which waswritten about by Gilbert White.

8/5 Edward Piggin, a retired Police Inspector, gave us a brief history ofpolicing in London, the involvement of women in the Metropolitan Police, and the changes since he was a police cadet in 1966. He told us about theBow Street Runners, established by the author and magistrate HenryFielding in 1749.

They had reinforced top hats on which to stand when extra height wasneeded. Improvements were introduced by Sir Robert Peel, known as thefather of modern British policing, when he was Home Secretary in 1829.With the loss of so many men in WW1, female officers joined theMetropolitan police in 1919 with limited duties. The first womansuperintendent was Sofia Stanley, and in 2017 Cressida Dick wasappointed the first female Commissioner in the London police force’s 188-year history.

15/5 We celebrated our 88th Anniversary with a Service led by BarbaraHillier, who told us about the founding of the group in 1930. Solos weresung by Margaret Smithson, and Helen Cornick played the organ. Ourspeaker was Rev Peter Cornick, who spoke on verses from the story of thefeeding of the five thousand, which had been read by Wendy Chalk.

Brian Burnage helped with the sound and visuals and, following theService, tea was provided by the committee and others and served byCaroline Husain, Diana Masters and Heather Francis. About 70 peopleattended the event and we thank all who made the afternoon a greatsuccess.

22/5 Joyce Meader is a historical knitting expert who owns an extensivecollection of original knitting patterns, books and knitted items rangingfrom 1800 to 1945. From swimming costumes, stockings, jumpers andunderwear to shopping bags, tea cosies and children’s toys, there seemsnothing that couldn’t be rustled up with a ball of yarn and a pair of needles.

Joyce showed us a huge range of knitting needles made of differentmaterials, knitting cards and patterns, and she demonstrated the types ofstitches and materials with which to knit. She also has a collection ofaccessories including the bell to measure the size of knitting needles anddarning mushrooms.

Joyce is preserving a bygone skill. She has a talent for making the pastcome alive and her presentation was entertaining and engaging.

Have you heard about Trafficking?Helen Cornick

If your answer is yes, how much do you know about this dreadful crime? If your response is no, should you as a Christian be concerned

about this?

On Thursday 5th July in the Church, you have the opportunity to hear aspeaker talk about trafficking, having worked in this context for around 12years.

Sister Imelda Poole is coming from Albania, where she is the President ofthe Mary Ward Loreto Foundation, to tell us about the work she does withyoung people to educate them in the hazards of human trafficking. Albania, like the UK, has some of the highest reported cases of this crime in Europe. How does the work she does aim to eradicate people trafficking?

Mary Ward Loreto is planting hope with a human rights approach tocombating modern day slavery. This challenging mission is implementedthrough works of justice, education, grass roots action and systemicchange. The aim is to eradicate poverty, the prime cause for humantrafficking.

Drinks will be served from 10 am with the day starting at 10.30 am andfinishing at 3 pm. Please bring your own lunch. Drinks will be provided.Cost for the day is £3. This is being arranged by Methodist Women inBritain, in partnership with Albania Hope, although we hope that morepeople – both men and women, and not necessarily Methodist – will comeand find out more. If you are able to come just for part of the day, I'm sureyou will find it enlightening and educational.

If you want to find out more, please speak to Helen Cornick.

The Gardener’s Hymn

All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small,All things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all.

But what is never mentioned, though gardeners know it’s true,Is when He made the goodies, He made the baddies too.

All things spray and swattable, disasters great and small. All things paraquatable, the Lord God made them all.

The greenfly on the roses, the maggots in the peas,Manure that fills our noses, he also gave us these.

The fungus on the goose-gogs, the club root on the greens,The slugs that eat the lettuce and chew the aubergines.

The drought that kills the fuchsias, the frost that nips the buds,The rain that drowns the seedlings, the blight that hits the spuds.

The midges and mosquitoes, the nettles and the weeds,The pigeons in the green stuff, the sparrows on the seeds.

The fly that gets the carrots, the wasp that eats the plums,How black the gardener’s outlook, though green may be his thumbs.

But still we gardeners labour, midst vegetables and flowers,And pray that what hits the neighbours, will somehow bypass ours.

All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small,All things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all.
