Hi and welcome to a new year and another edition of The Link. It seems like it was just yesterday when we launched this publication, when actually it was seven years ago. And it seems like it was just yesterday when our sales representatives (including yours truly)

were taking orders in ink on three-part/carbon order forms, adding them up using calcula-tors, hand mailing them weekly (using stamps and envelopes!) and stopping by pay phones in between sales calls to set up more appointments. Imagine that!

Order forms gave way to laptops, and then netbooks. No adding necessary any longer, so no need for the calculator! Snail mail led to the fax machine, and that has almost become obsolete. Finally, mobile phones became cell phones, which segued to PDAs or smartphones. Whew! What’s next? Well, we certainly don’t claim to know, but rest assured, our agencies will be ready.

This issue of The Link features ad showcases from our outstanding vendors. Please take in the exhibits and inquire about the wide variety of wonderful products in The Southern Link, Link 2 Sales and Link Lifestyle. There is lot of “new” in our showrooms this year, and thousands of great products. The magazine also has a wonderful piece on social media and our industry, so please check it out.

We encourage all of our customers and vendors to be involved in the social media arena and to take advantage of the opportunities through technology. The Link is in prime position to be involved and embraces the opportunities. We want to help drive traffic to stores, get brand exposure for products, and push retail sales in a positive growth cycle using all aspects in the wonderful world of new media. Whether you’re a retailer or supplier, we trust you will be en-riched by our experience in this new area of branding, communication and business exposure.

The Link experience may now have interaction outside of sales reps visits and showroom appointments. It could involve e-blasts, Facebook posts, Twitter feeds, blog forums, e-news-letters and more. Whatever our correspondence, always know that we are working with you in a mindset of courteous assistance based in southern hospitality!

While technology has changed the face of business and social interaction, we believe that good, hard-working people are still the central force in the business world — and relationships are at the core of every aspect of life. Please contact us in any manner you wish. The people of our company are here to foster achievement. We hope you will visit our newly remodeled showrooms, visit with our outstanding regional managers, and stay in touch via the web. We plan on increasing our presence while striving to increase exposure for our customers and manufacturers.

The Southern Link of GA enters the year (our 27th) with extreme confidence after another campaign of solid growth. We plan on growing this year even more, and hope you will grow with us and have a tremendous 2012. Funny, the date seems very modern to us, but look around — times have certainly changed. It’s a far cry from yesterday.

Have a wonderful year! Thanks for your continued support.

Brad and Fred Rosenkampff

As technology continues to rapidly evolve and expand, so do the opportunities to implement it into your business. The Southern Link agencies and their ven-dors have embraced social media, email and other tools as ways to interact with customers and efficiently run their busi-nesses — and in doing so, they’re show-ing retailers how they, too, can use tech-nology to boost sales.

The Southern Link of GA and its vendors reveal the secrets for increasing sales with email, social media and other high-tech tools.By Stacey Closser

Emerson Street updates its Facebook page immediately following product shoots. By doing so, reps and fans are able to see new products before they’re even published in a catalog.

Page 11: The Link, Spring 2012

The Southern Link agencies have made it their priority to remain on the cutting edge of innovation. For instance, they recently upgraded the company’s website, w w w. thesouthernlink.com, with ordering function-ality that allows retailers to make orders, check availability and check order status in real time. Also, The Southern Link is actively developing its social media strategy to better communicate with retailers and to market products.

“Social media and the Internet are integral in a consumer-driven business,” says Brad Rosenkampff, COO. “In a shrinking market, how do we make those brick-and-mortar busi-nesses stronger? We can not only work with retail stores in person, but we can increase their exposure through social media and the Internet.”

Beyond raising awareness, these tools help retailers be more efficient in gaining and re-taining customers. Social media opens up the conversation among vendors, reps, retailers and consumers, giving everyone better access to information and customer service.

The Internet has also revved up the speed of purchasing. When parents find out that their little darling has a new obsession with Silly Bandz, for example, they hit the Web to find out not only what they are, but also where to buy them. By piggybacking on hot trends, retailers can quickly gain momentum with on-line marketing, email blasts and social media.

Technology in AcTionRosenkampff uses the popular Kountry Krys-tal wine glass as a example of how The Southern Link has used technology to help create buzz for a popular consumer product. “It’s essentially a mason jar with a wine-glass stem. We did an email blast and a Facebook posting and imme-diately had a great response, raising awareness

not only for our customers but for us as well,” he says. “It’s all about creating exposure for brands, which is good for everybody.”

Jim Sadek, owner and president of An-drea by Sadek, has focused his marketing energy into email blasts and the company’s website. “We have a great fully-functional wholesaler Web site and have made constant improvements to that,” he says. Meanwhile, the company’s email list has continued to grow over the years as customers move toward the Web for communication and information gathering.

It’s that information gathering that com-pels Hatley to constantly update its website. Chris Oldland, president of the Montreal-based apparel company, is devoted to ensur-ing that every customer’s first impression is the right one.

“For companies that care about their brand and people’s first impression of them, their website has to be spectacular and interactive,” he says. Hatley’s Web site has a company blog, customer pictures and YouTube clips of kids in featured outfits. What began as a part-time project for one employee has turned into a job worthy of three full-time positions.

“The Web is like another free-standing store. You have to dedicate the same amount of energy you dedicate to your brick-and-mortar store,” Oldland says. “We overhaul our website once a year — destroy it and bring it back up again. Ev-erything changes so fast, you have to keep people interested in coming back.”

FAcebook is A FAvoriTeOldland says Facebook provides a great op-portunity to retailers. “It’s the only focused place on the Web that’s free and legitimate,

where people can really say how they feel about a company or a product,” he says. “It can take small companies and make them big.”

Hatley posts relevant product information on its Facebook page as well as special cam-paigns to drive traffic. November is pancreatic cancer month, so the company has invited its fans to send in pictures of themselves with crazy mustaches. Whoever wins will be given $500 to donate to a charity of their liking that supports pancreatic cancer. They’ll also receive the “ultimate Hatley men’s wardrobe.”

Such campaigns draw people in with hu-mor and the promise of free products, while also demonstrating the company’s altruistic culture.

Kameleon Jewelry hosted a similar cam-paign for breast cancer awareness month. The company donated one dollar for every new “like” it received on Facebook. The result was 1,000 new fans and $1,000 for cancer research.

“Once we have a ‘ like,’ we do things to keep them interested and coming back,” says Allison Smith, director of media and com-munications at the Nova Scotia-based jew-elry company. The page will prompt users to suggest product names and choices, each of

Kameleon Jewelry’s jewel pops have been a popular addition to the company’s Facebook page. Fans of the page can vote on their favorite new pop and suggest product names.

“By piggybacking on hot trends, retailers can quickly gain momentum with online marketing, email blasts and social media.”

which might draw hundreds of responses.Carol Zaccour, vice president of sales Pa-

vilion Gift Company in Bergen, New York, says Facebook has been helpful in product development. Fans offer advice on favorite products and upcoming ideas. “I’d rather have 20 people ‘like’ me that communicate with me,” versus 1,000 fans who never visit your page again, she says.

Pavilion combines e-blasts with social me-dia by advertising its Facebook and Twitter pages on all outgoing communication. By targeting customers who already have a re-lationship with the company, it gets more dedicated fans and followers.

leT’s TAlkDon’t overlook the networking that social me-dia can provide between vendors and retailers, not just retailers and consumers. “Recently we visited a customer, took some pictures of her store and will link them to her Facebook page,” says Joanne Jennings, national sales manager at Emerson Street.

Similar to tagging friends in party pictures, businesses can link to each other through campaigns and product previews. Your fans can become their fans and vice versa. Jen-nings likes the way Facebook allows her to get product images out immediately after a photo shoot, months before a catalog is published. “It’s a good way to get opinions on products,” she says.

One area that Smith and Jennings would both like to grow in is Twitter. It’s a com-

mon sentiment as companies try to de-termine how best to use the popular

social media outlet. While it seems like everyone else might have it all figured out, that’s not the case. According to a study of Fortune 100 companies, only 20 percent of the major international companies are using all four major platforms of social media (Face-book, Twitter, corporate blogs and YouTube).

Picking one and doing it well ensures you don’t spread yourself too thin. The important thing is to jump in somewhere. “We want to build stronger relationships and improve communication with our customers. Social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook are just a couple of tools that help us do that,” says Tammy Hickel, executive vice president at Magnet Works in St Louis.

Magnet Works’ Facebook posts usually prompt fans to respond or provide valuable tips. For example, on Halloween their page featured a link to free pumpkin carving printa-bles. “Whether we like it or not, our customers are using these tools — to recommend, refer

and, in some, cases criticize our businesses,” Hickel says. “At the minimum, it’s important to know what customers are saying, and, ide-ally, to create a positive community and have a strong presence.”

Adds Hickel: “Social media is bringing us closer to the days where reputation and person-alized customer service rule, not low prices.”

The Southern Link has a passion for in-novation that attracts like-minded vendors. Though it’s had success for the past 26 years, the Rosenkampffs are looking toward the next 25 years as some of the company’s best. And however customers choose to commu-nicate with them, The Southern Link and its vendors are sure to be there with a website, social media page — and good old-fashioned hand shakes.

Hatley uses Facebook to communicate its values and company culture. By creating compelling campaigns and ways for fans to interact with the company, Hatley has strengthened its relationships with customers.

Quick Tech Tips

h Start small. Pick a couple of platforms and commit to them.

h Staff your team appropriately.

h Keep your audience in mind.

h Be sincere and live up to the expecta-tions you set.

h Be patient.

h Remember that just as quickly as they like you, they can dislike you.

Magnet Works has committed all its profits from the sale of the Hope Flags to Siteman Cancer Center. A recent promo for October Breast Cancer Awareness encouraged customers to hang the flag in their store and submit a picture of it to MagnetWorks’ Facebook page. Such campaigns not only raise awareness for companies’ philanthropic ventures but give customers a way to participate.

The Southern Link of Georgia has been serving gift and home décor retailers in the southeast region for more than 25 years. We sat down

recently with Chief Executive Fred Rosen-kampff Jr. to discuss the company’s successes and the road ahead.

Why does The Southern Link of GA have three sales agencies? When we started The Southern Link, we didn’t have intentions of creating multiple divisions or agencies. We expanded to two agencies in 2002 when we saw an opportunity in the market. In 2009 and 2010, we acquired two agencies — Fox Premier and Southern Exposure. Through those acquisitions, we brought in great people like Scott Lankford, and solid reps and lines. We formed a lifestyle division that focuses on a different segment of our market.

Marc Rice came in and immediately took over sales management of The Southern Link. This move freed up my brother Brad to con-centrate on all aspects of daily operations, with an emphasis on marketing and media presence. It also allowed me to be more in-volved with our key account team.

The recession has hit every industry hard in recent years. How do you see the gift and home décor industry faring in the coming years? The gift industry will be fine for the long haul. The way we do business may change, even dramatically in some areas.

Obviously, the economy has taken its toll the past three years. Also, technology is play-ing an increasing role in everyday sales, from social media to email and online ordering. But

there will always be a need in our business for the person-to-person interaction that we feel is our strength. You can have all the online ordering, e-blasting, great showroom space and Facebook interaction, but without great reps you will not survive in our industry.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that 75 per-cent of our industry sales are on the road, and we can’t see the forest through the trees in terms of what each company really needs to be successful.

The Southern Link is a second-gener-ation business. Can your customers expect to see a third generation soon?

Wow, it’s hard to know what kids will do. Brad has two boys, Brock and Grady, who would undoubtedly be good reps and are only a few years from being on their own. His two-year-old son, Pace, is a long way from working. I don’t see my oldest daughter, Whitney, or my oldest son, Trey, ever being involved in the business, as they both have other avenues they are pursuing. My youngest son, Scott, is only 13 but he could sell ice to an Eskimo, so there is always that possibility.

If you had asked me in college what my plans were, I would have said my father would be a one-generation owner. Now 26 years later we are talking about a third generation. That is frightening but exciting as well. We must be doing something right!

There has been dramatic change in the 26 years this company has been in busi-ness. How do you prepare for the next 25 years when there’s no guarantee how it will turn out? There was no guarantee 26 years ago when we started with six reps and no lines that had

ever been sold in the southeast. I don’t look for guarantees or I wouldn’t be in the business now. No entrepreneur, and that includes our sales reps, asks for guarantees — they just want opportunity.

You give me reps who want an opportu-nity to succeed and a driven management team, and we will be successful for the next 25 years. It won’t always be easy, but as long as we are working toward a mutual goal, we will be successful.

How has your company managed to not only survive but thrive over all these years? What is it that sets The Southern Link apart from the rest of its competi-tors?In the grand scheme there are many things that lead a company to be successful over a long period of time. But in the end, you have to have the right people in place. We have always believed in strong reps who can make a good living. We have managers for each division of our business, which allows them to focus on growth and potential.

We also, as a company, look outside the box in our sales techniques, incentives, goals, training and bonus structure. We want ev-eryone to be moving in the same direction and have the same feeling of being part of something that is bigger than themselves.

We all strive for that — to be part of a team that can accomplish something bigger than the individual. That’s why we love sports, concerts, political elections, etc. It’s that in-ner drive to be part of something bigger that drives us all.

At The Southern Link of Georgia, we want to have that focus and drive for our entire team.

Fred Rosenkampff, CEO of The Southern Link of GA, talks candidly about the role of technology in retail and the keys to succeeding in a challenging industry.
