In trying to collate all the available information relating to recordings of Liszt t s music, I suffer from disadvantages that do not face the collator of scores and publications. Firstly, all Liszt' s music has been written so that such scores as there are already exist, whereas every record collector knows that new records appear every month, and many fine records of Liszt's works probably remain to be made. Secondly, the accuracy and authenticity of Liszt publications can be precisely commented on by reference to manuscripts and first editions, whereas there were no gramophone records in Liszt's day -which brings me to another point: even if such records did exist, would it be fair or profitable to judge eve1~ other recording by reference to the minut.iae of the composer's interpretation'? This is sometimes done with records of Rachmaninoff's music, for Rachmaninoff, the last of the great pianist composers, lived well into the 20th century and left many records including records of all his wor·ks for piano and orchestra. But as soon as a composer becomes a performer· he is just another interpreter of his works - unique, perhaps, and for that reason to be closely studied in his interpret~tiv~ ~ole. But, because of his very uniqueness, a composer's performance should never be blindly imitated hy another artist, for uniqueness is by definition inimitable and every artist worthy the name must sooner or later conceive everything he plays for himself, for a good performance is always a re-creation of the music. Uncritical imitation is always at best a pale reflection of the original and mere imitators of great artists have never r·eached the top of the musical tree and never will. . In any case, a composer's recorded performance is full of traps for t.he unwary: in the first place, a recording captures only ~ performance made in artificial sturlio conditions which are not natural to a musician used to the concert platform, and a studio performance may well be considerably different from a concert performance. Secondly, because no artist plays anything precisely the same way twice, a composer's recorded performance may not reflect his own later conception of the same music. Arising out of this is the fact that some composers do not, in performance, treat their own scores with the almost religious reverence that many writers on music encourage us to adopt: recordings made by Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky are often most intriguing in this respectt But the writers on music are right: a composer has proprietary rights in his scores, but lesser mortals are in general better advised to pay heed to what a composer writes in prl"lference to what he playst For t.hese reasons, I do uot regard any recording of any music as a paragon of accuracy and authenticity, for there is no such thing in music. Nor do I propose to set out here every recording of tiszt' s music from every possible source. I cannot do this in any case because I do not have access to every record catalogue throughout the world, and I think

there is little point in referring to recordings where the performance or recording is sub-standard. Fortunately there are enough good recordings and performances of those works of Liszt that are recorded to enable me to ignore second rate ones with no qualms of conscience! Some of the records I shall refer to are deleted from certain catalogues but can be found by diligent search in second hand record stores or foreign catalogues, and it is quite easy to order records from abroad. Deletion of a record does not necessarily mean that it will never again be obtainable, for deleted records are sometimes reissued, as in the case of Alfred Brendel's fine Vox records which have reappeared on the Turnabout label.

A vast amount of Liszt t s music still remains to be recorded and, in listing available recordings, I shall number the works of which there are records according to the 'Complete Catalogue of Liszt's Works' commencing on page 393 of 'Franz Liszt, The Jvran and his ~1usic' edited by Alan Walker {Barrie & Jenkins). If a work referred to in that catalogue is not listed here, that means either that that work is not recorded or that there is no recording known to me or that any recording there is is for some reason unrepresentative of the work due to a poor standard of performance or recording. Where any record seems t9 me in some- way outstanding, because of the work it.self or of performance or recording, I shall mark it with asterisks, one star for unusual interest, two for outstanding performance or t"ecording and three for something altogether exceptional. As I am primarily interested in the quality of the wor~ and the performance of it, the excep~ional grading will occasionally be given where the recordin~, though adequate, is not of the highest standard: in such cases a minus sign (-) will be placed beside the asterisk.
