Student Worksheet © NAME: Wardrobe A to Z From the wardrobe to Cair Paravel, Tumnus to Aslan, there’s a whole world inside The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. When you read the book, what did it make you think about? How did the story make you feel? Think about how the characters treated and spoke to one another. What words would you use to describe these things? Your task will be to comment on the story using each letter of the alphabet. For example, ‘A’ could stand for Aslan. It could also stand for Alliance. Like all the good creatures of Narnia working together. ‘A’ could also represent Anger. How the Witch feels toward the children. There are all kinds of possibilities. For each letter of the alphabet, pick one word that begins with that letter. This word should best represent the story. Her magic has made certain it is always winter (but never Christmas). Anyone who has opposed the Witch has been turned to stone. Edmund Pevensie finds his way to Narnia through the wardrobe. He finds himself face to face with the Witch. The Witch claims she is the Queen. She asks Edmund to bring his brother and sisters to her castle. She promises Edmund he will be a prince and one day, when she is gone, a King. In the end, Edmund is freed from the Witch’s control. He plays a big part in the battle against her evil army. Now, imagine Edmund has fully sided with the Witch. Your task will be to write an alternate reality version of the story. This version will detail what happens when Edmund betrays his family to become the King of Narnia. Your story should try to follow the same writing style as the book. The alternate reality version should explain what happens to Peter, Susan and Lucy after Edmund decides to side with the Witch. It should also discuss what Edmund plans to do to ensure the Witch doesn’t betray him once the others are out of the way. Try to give as much information as you can. Describe how Edmund is thinking and feeling. Explain why he makes the decisions he does. Your alternate reality should begin at the point where Edmund is rescued in the woods. Afterward, the Pevensie children fulfill an ancient prophecy by sitting on the four thrones of Cair Paravel. Peter and Edmund become Kings. Susan and Lucy become Queens. In Narnia, the children eventually grow to become adults and great rulers. But there’s one thing every great King and Queen needs that isn’t mentioned in the book: a coat of arms. A coat of arms is usually shaped like a shield. It has pictures of things that represent the history and character of a family. Your coat of arms for the Pevensies should have at least four separate parts. These parts will represent each of Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy. Make sure the coat of arms is colorful and fitting for the Kings and Queens. Both the shape and color of the coat of arms is important. Different colors have different meanings. For example, red can mean military strength. Gold or yellow can mean generosity. The coat of arms can also have any number of background designs or symbolic lines. On either side of the shield section, animals or creatures that support the family are often found. These are called supporters. For nobles, the shield is often topped with a crown and a knight’s helmet. Your coat of arms should also include a motto that represents the family. This should be just a few words. If you need help coming up with ideas, do some research online. Once you’ve finished drawing your coat of arms, write a few paragraphs explaining each element. Activity One

Activity SixCreature Draft

Have you ever wanted to lead your own mystical monster army? Now’s your chance. In this activity, you’ll get to make your own unstoppable Narnian army. To make your army, you’ll have to pick from all of the human, animal and mythical characters from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

From the wardrobe to Cair Paravel, Tumnus to Aslan, there’s a whole world inside The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. When you read the book, what did it make you think about?

How did the story make you feel? Think about how the characters treated and spoke to one another. What words would you use to describe these things?

Did You Know?

C. S. Lewislive Staples Lewis was born on November 29, 1898 in Belfast, Ireland. His mother was Florence Lewis, the daughter of a Church of Ireland priest. His father was Richard

Lewis, a solicitor. When Lewis was a boy, he decided he didn’t like the name Clive. He loved a small dog named Jacksie and took the name for his own. He refused to answer to any other name. He would be known as Jack to friends and family for the rest of his life. Lewis was close with his older brother Warren. The pair spent time imagining their own land of Boxen, which had its own history.

At age 10, following his mother’s death, Lewis’ father sent him to a series of private boarding schools. He went to Cherbourg House preparatory school. During that time, he drifted away from his Christian roots. He became more and more interested in mythology and spent a great amount of time studying Norse and Greek myths. In 1916, Lewis earned a scholarship to attend University College, Oxford. Shortly afterward, he joined the Officers’ Training Corps at the university. Within months he was shipped to France to do his part in the First World War.

In April 1918, Lewis was wounded by a British shell. In December he returned to Oxford. By 1925, he had graduated and became a teacher at Magdalen College. He stayed in the role

for nearly 30 years. There, he joined a group called The Inklings. This group also happened to include J.R.R. Tolkien. During this time, his faith in Christianity was restored. By the mid ‘20s, Lewis had begun publishing his own writing. His first book, Dymer was published in 1926. His first science fiction work, Out of the Silent Planet was published in 1938. In 1949, Lewis began writing what would become some of his best-known works, The Chronicles of Narnia. The seven book series went on to sell more than 100 million copies. Lewis succumbed to renal failure and died in November 1963.

Chapters 4 to 7Interview with a WitchJadis, the White Witch and self-proclaimed Queen of Narnia holds all its residents under threat of being turned to stone. All of Narnia suffers constant winter. All who speak of the Witch say she is vile and evil. But, we really don’t get to see the Witch’s perspective in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

In this activity, you will be playing the role of a reporter. You will be interviewing the Witch. Get together in groups of two. Between yourselves, decide who will be the Witch and who will be the reporter.

The reporter will write down questions to try to understand the Witch’s motivations. The person playing the Witch will come up with interesting answers to the questions. The finished product should be typed and follow a question and answer format.

Character Study Is there one character from the book that you really like? This is your chance. Pick a character from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Write a character study about that person or creature. A character study helps people get to know a character.

In your first paragraph, give some simple details about your character. This can be age, looks, likes, and dislikes. Give some information about the character’s background. Is your character smart? Shy?

Does your character have any weaknesses or strengths? Talk about them in your next paragraph. Write about how these details affect your character’s decisions. Your character study should also share some of the conflict your character faces. This will include both within their own mind and with other people.

Chapters 4 to 7Interview with a WitchJadis, the White Witch and self-proclaimed Queen of Narnia holds all its residents under threat of being turned to stone. All of Narnia suffers constant winter. All who speak of the Witch say she is vile and evil. But, we really don’t get to see the Witch’s perspective in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

In this activity, you will be playing the role of a reporter. You will be interviewing the Witch. Get together in groups of two. Between yourselves, decide who will be the Witch and who will be the reporter.

The reporter will write down questions to try to understand the Witch’s motivations. The person playing the Witch will come up with interesting answers to the questions. The finished product should be typed and follow a question and answer format.

Character Study Is there one character from the book that you really like? This is your chance. Pick a character from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Write a character study about that person or creature. A character study helps people get to know a character.

In your first paragraph, give some simple details about your character. This can be age, looks, likes, and dislikes. Give some information about the character’s background. Is your character smart? Shy?

Does your character have any weaknesses or strengths? Talk about them in your next paragraph. Write about how these details affect your character’s decisions. Your character study should also share some of the conflict your character faces. This will include both within their own mind and with other people.
