During the months of February, March, and April the students in third and fourth grade were invited to attend Math Ninja Nights. This afterschool activity was attended once a week by 53 students over a series of 8 weeks. Several students asked if they could bring a ninja sword to Math Ninja. The answer was “No, you will only need your razor sharp math skills and your ninja like math brain.” The head ninja, Mrs. Diaz, collected data from the classrooms, analyzed the data and determined the areas where review would most benefit the students. She then recruited the most amazing team of ninjas ever seen. Mr. Corsi and Mrs McMahon were the fourth grade ninja team. Mrs. Diaz, Mrs. Fleming and Miss Vanslyke were the third grade ninja team. Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Reakes and Mrs. McGrath all stepped in to be substitute ninjas when they were needed. If you had walked in during a Math Ninja event you might have seen fourth graders outside racing through a multiplication fact fluency relay or walking a fraction number line taped to the floor. You might have seen third graders working cooperatively to solve a word problem or you might have found them rotating though a series of different centers that all focused on multi digit subtraction. Each week we had a different theme. One week was pirate week, for example. During this week several students and teachers dressed like pirates while solving math problems. One student, wearing a pirate eye patch, even brought a paper parrot to sit on her shoulder and check her math work. It was reported that Miss VanSlyke’s math ninja students enjoyed a math activity that involved “walking the plank”. Students received a snack and a theme related prize each week that they attended. They especially enjoyed the goldfish snack and shark tooth necklace that were treats during shark week. Many thanks go to Miss. Allen, Mrs. McGrath, Mrs. McMahon, Mrs. Diaz and Mrs. Clements who all supplied snacks. Special thanks also go to Miss Allen, Mrs. McMahon and Mrs. Diaz for donating enough money

to cover the cost of the prizes, and to Mrs. Langer who covered some end of the day duties so that ninja instructors could get started with their students. The ninja team also wishes to thank Mr. Durkot for being supportive and available during the activities. Mr. DeLia was indispensable as he coordinated all the weekly transportation changes that had to be made in order to make this opportunity available to our students. The ninja students were AWESOME and parental support for this ninja adventure was amazing. Math Ninja was a big hit with the students……math CAN be fun! All the adults involved truly enjoyed providing our students with an opportunity to sharpen their math skills.Submitted by: Trish Diaz

Students in 6th grade math with Mrs. Latta were able to use their math skills in order to “plant their garden of knowledge” in the school courtyard. They measured perimeter, area, and volume using their skills and worked collaboratively to celebrate Earth Week. Real-world math application is truly fun! Submitted by: Mrs. Latta

Some elementary students surprised our school nurse, Mrs. Potter, on National Nurse's Day with a wallful of thank you notes. Many students included a personal message. How thoughtful of these students!

On May 7th, National Honor Society hosted their annual Senior Citizens breakfast. They served about fifty people and had a great turn out! On the menu was bacon, french toast sticks, pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, oatmeal, bagels, toast, danishes, fruit, coffee, juice and tea. The breakfast lasted from 8 am to 10 am. Mrs. Skeval was thankful for all who came to support to NHS and hopes to see everyone, plus more, return for next year’s breakfast. Thank you to Mrs. Skeval and NHS for hosting this fantastic event. Also thank you to Mrs. Skeval for allowing one of our Lion’s Roar crew members to have a plate as well! Congratulations on a wonderful turn out.

The Cincinnatus Envirothon teams competed in the Cortland County Envirothon on May 2 at Camp Owahta. Teams from around the county gathered to answer questions, solve problems, and identify all sorts of environmental phenomena. The stations addressed soils, aquatics, forestry, wildlife, sustainability, and an oral problem station where students had to come up with a solution to an environmental problem. At the end of the day, the two teams from Cincy had won four of the six stations and the Red team had accrued enough points to win the county and advance to the state finals for the fourth year in a row! Congratulations to Liz Golicki, Luke Graham, Emilio Diaz, Buster Waltz, and

Mrs. Sustad’s Geometry class created zoos for the town of Cincinnatus this year! Their goal was to create a model to present to a developer to attempt to obtain a loan to create their zoo. Their models must have included cages for tigers, lions, monkeys, elephants, giraffes, pandas, zebras, and penguins. The students worked in groups of twos and threes and had two and a half weeks to create their models. They had some in class time, but this project was mostly outside of school work. Students used their skills they learned this year to create their blue prints and models. The blue prints were in 2D using surface area and volume. The models were in 3D made out of paper and tape. Some groups took advantage of the creativity bonus by putting concession stands, trees, toy animals, and benches. Students were graded on mathematical accuracy, for example students had to use specific dimensions and shapes for their visitor center. They were also graded on fitting requirements, creativity, and much more. In past years other faculty and community members came in to “judge” the models that were created. Written by: Kim Jenney

The Cincinnatus Central School District works to convey information to students, parents, businesses and community members in a variety of ways. One major source of information is the school district website which can be found on the Internet at www.cc.cnyric.org.

Another method of communication within the district is this publication, The Lion's Roar, which is produced by students enrolled in the high school course, Computer Publications. The newsletter is published entirely by students and the printing completed by OCM BOCES. In addition to the website and newsletter, there are also a variety of classroom newsletters, grade reports and parent memos sent home via students and/or mail.

The purpose of these communication tools is to share information about our district, to showcase student, faculty, and staff endeavors, as well as provide resources for students, parents, community members and faculty. We welcome input from all of the school community in making this communication more efficient and more valuable. In utilizing new technologies the district may want to post children's work or pictures on our website and/or in district publications. This could include photos, writings, artwork, or videos recorded for our in-house TV station. Parents or guardians who do NOT wish to have their child’s name and/or photograph on the district web site, in student video productions, in the newsletter or other publications, must notify the district in writing of their wishes. This must be done each school year. Please send any related correspondence to:
