PRESIDENT’S REPORT ------------------------------------------------------ Dean Scott

The End of an Era

Friday 1 July, 2011 marked the end of a fifty-year era for Lionism in South Australia and, in particular, for the Lions Club of the City of Adelaide. The members past and present can be justly proud of what has been achieved in service to the community from day one to the present time. The year just passed has been no exception; outstanding work in the community has continued to provide much-needed welfare for so many of our citizens requiring help. Our support of the homeless and Street Kids through the welfare agencies including: Fred's Van. Adelaide Day Centre, Hutt Street Centre, Westcare and CWYAN have benefited so many in need. Supplying blankets to eleven welfare agencies (they are not glamorous but are practical) provided much needed warmth for the recipients during the cold winter nights. The Children of Courage Awards continue to provide recognition to the many young people severely disadvantaged by a variety of life-threatening disabilities. What these young people have achieved is truly remarkable and highlights the dedication of parents and professional helpers. From comments made to me by the supporting institutions, they value highly these Awards as there are no other like awards in this State. We have continued to support the various Lions programmes during the year. In this day and age the cost of providing many services has become so expensive it is only possible if Clubs combine some of their resources to ensure that the best possible results can be achieved. The Club continued its programme of doing barbeques for worthwhile organisations; however, we need to re-think our commitment for providing these by placing more emphasis on doing those that will raise funds for the Club. Barbeques are great fellowship projects in which every member can be involved. Unquestionably, the highlights of the past year under review were the hosting of the Adelaide Five O2010 District Convention in October, 2010 and the 50th Anniversary Dinner in July, 2011. When the Club was approached by the then District Governor Elect, Ray Marks, the Board, at the time, accepted the challenge. I knew it would need 100% involvement from members and their Ladies if we, as a Club, were to maintain our reputation for doing a job and doing it well. As has been the spirit of the Club over its 50 years, we did DG Ray proud and every one of our members and their Ladies (including

widows of past members) are to be congratulated and thanked for the magnificent team effort in making the Convention a great success. The year finished with our 50th Anniversary Dinner celebration on Friday 1 July, 2011, a night which maintained our reputation for setting high standards, but without too much pomp and ceremony. I commend everyone involved in making it another memorable event in the 50-year history of this Club. When I was asked to be President for our 50th year, I accepted, knowing that the year would be extremely busy for all members. The majority of our members are ageing and the year has been very demanding on their time given to Lions, and many are looking to a reduction in involvement. It is an understandable sentiment, and in the coming year a total re-think of Club activities will be necessary to ensure we start the next 50-year period on a proper footing. In concluding this report of the year past, I wish to acknowledge the work of some members by making a few Awards:

SECRETARY’S REPORT ---------------------------------------------------------- Ray Dix

The Club started its 50th year with 33 members, plus 4 honorary members.

Early in the year we were fortunate to re-induct Lion Noel Gully, making a total of 38.

Shortly afterwards, Lion Noel passed away along with PDG Ben Gray and Lion Gary Loxton. All are sadly missed.

Lions Don Germein, Kuang Koo Sing and Sathi Sathianathan all resigned as Lions in good standing, leaving the Club with a total membership of 32 at the close of the year.

TREASURER’S REPORT ------------------------------------------------- Tony Pederick

2010/2011 was a successful financial year for the Club.

Funds in hand at 31st May 2011 were:

Administration Account $ 681.95 Activities Account $ 16,914.21 Charities Account $162,960.00Total $180,556.16

The Club spent $14,786 on Donations/Grants this year, compared to $10,208 last year.

Membership Dues were slightly down this year at $4,575 to $5,139 last year.

Net Surplus this year was $13,429 compared to $25,194 last year, but that figure included a contribution of $10,000 from the Australian Lions Foundation.

BULLETIN & ANNUAL REPORT ---------------------------------------------------Warren Wood

The Adelaide Lion was published through 5 editions (volumes 86 to 90), during the fiscal period. In addition, the Club’s history, Faith, Hope and Charity was produced to mark the 50th anniversary and for distribution at the special July 1st function.

Once again, editing and production aspects were greatly aided by the talents of co-editor, Lion Greg Kneale and his sister-in-law, Pam Carr, whose typing contributions are greatly appreciated.

Our personal appreciation is also extended to President Dean, Board members and others who contributed, either editorially or photographically, during the year, and to the publication of this, the Club’s 50th Annual Report.

During the year, the Club made several donations in kind to worthy charitable organisations including, from top:President Dean presenting a Perkins Brailler to Royal

Society for the Blind co-ordinator, Ms Iris Zierfusz; presenting Emergency Medical Information books to Sue

Shearer of the SA Ambulance service; and, with Lion Terry and Sharyn Goudie, examining the contents of the

Starter Kits the Club provides to the SYC.

1st VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT ---------------------------------------------------Warren Wood

With the Club providing $24,000, in support of 1,910 hours of voluntary service rendered to the community by its members, our 50th year, like the 49 preceding it, has proved as active as it has been successful. With due appreciation to President Dean and our ageing, but none-the-less dedicated membership, the Club continued to assist the various charities, causes, Lions projects and individuals worthy of its support during this historic period in review.

Major Projects

Prior to the start of the year, three major projects were nominated:

(1) Refurbishment of the Cora Barclay Centre at North Adelaide.

(2) Mounting a charity golf day in aid of the Neil Sachse Foundation.

(3) Hosting the Lions District C1 Adelaide Five OConvention in October 2010

Whilst for various reasons beyond the Club’s control, sadly the first two had to be delayed, Adelaide Five Oprogressed to schedule, culminating in a very happy and highly successful Convention for D.G. Ray Marks. Chairman Robin and his dedicated, hard-working committee of fellow members and their LLs really put on a great show, spearheaded by Lion Graham’s spectacular opening!

Lions M.D. and International Projects

ALDAF - $100 and $75 donations – plus $35 for DVD purchase. LCIF - $650 donation, plus separate donations of $500 each in respect of the Pakistan and Christchurch relief appeals. Support for Lions Queensland Flood relief has also been pledged, but has yet to be paid. “Operation Smile” – assisted by Lions - $150 donation. Lions Medical Research Foundation - $500 donation. Lions Eye Health Programme - $150 donation. Lions Cord Blood Foundation - $500 donation. Lions Hearing Dogs - $500 donation. Lions Quest Programme – offered sponsorship to two city colleges which, unfortunately, were not taken up.

Youth of the Year Quest Despite the valiant attempts of Chairman Ray Najar, plans to finally, once again hold judging at Club level failed, when earlier promises of three candidates did not eventuate. We were fortunate, however, to recruit Ms Christina Peek of St Dominic’s Priory School to represent the Club at the Regional Final at Modbury on February 5th. Whilst she was not successful on that occasion, we were favoured with her presence at the Club Luncheon on Thursday, April 7th, when she addressed the meeting - $260.

Girl Guides CampThe Club sponsored one of the participants and her carer to this popular, annual event - $240.

CWYAN and SYC Inheriting some $4,000 from our daughter Club, Adelaide Community Lions which handed back its charter in June, 2010, we agreed to carry on the financial and other support it rendered to the above-mentioned organisations, both of whom work in tandem to assist the city’s homeless and troubled youth. Lions Christmas Cakes

The sale of Christmas Cakes is a major fund-raiser and gives our Club the ability to undertake projects in the community and to make donations to worthwhile causes throughout the year.

This year our sales were $36,600, a modest increase on 2009/10. Our purchases totalled $27,800 giving us a tidy profit. The result is even more pleasing as we provided Cakes as donations to a number of city centres for the homeless, at Christmas and Easter. Happily, we were awarded the District prize.

Once again our major selling outlet was the stall in Gawler Place, where sales were $9,000. Special thanks go to Lion Graham Higgs who manned this stall on a daily basis. Thanks also to other members who assisted. With the good graces of Dr Harold Clarke we are hopeful of maintaining our site there for the coming year.

The Bendigo/Adelaide Bank again provided good support and, from discussions with one of their staff, we are confident of their assistance again this year. In acknowledgement of their help, our Club again donated $750 to the Bank’s Community Enterprise Foundation, which was presented to Ms Rachel Hawkins at the May 19th Luncheon Meeting.

Our thanks also go to Grant and Jane Minervini for providing space in their warehouse to store the bulk supply of Christmas Cakes and Puddings.

For the coming season the price for 1.5kg Cakes will increase from $13 to $14. The 1kg Cakes and Puddings remain at $10 and $11 respectively.

Mint sales for the year were $8,000, a drop from $11,500 last year. The impact here was a decision by State Government to not allow the sale of (so called) junk food in public hospitals. Purchases were $3,400 and so a reasonable profit was still returned.

Wine

During the year President Dean arranged the purchase of varieties of red and white wine, primarily for sale to members. Wine was also used at the Convention and at our recent 50th year birthday celebration. As well as arranging wine purchase, Dean kindly provided his garage for storage.

Melbourne Cup Luncheon - another winner!

The 2010 Cup Luncheon was certainly another fund-raising winner for the Club, yielding $1,350 for our charities. Below: Best Hat winner, Pam Whittle (standing centre), and those who suitably dressed for the annual Hat Parade.

3rd VICE PRESIDENT'S REPORT -------------------------------------------------------------- Geoff Fox

In February, the Chinese New Year Banquet at the My Yen Restaurant on Belair Road went down very well. We were down on numbers, but the food was excellent and there was plenty of it. We served our own wines there and the last minute auction of the remaining bottles was a success.

The only setback in my portfolio this year was the proposed Neil Sachse Foundation Lions Golf Day. After a number of meetings with President Dean, Lion Bob and myself, with the staff of the Foundation, at the end of the day we had to cancel, due to circumstances beyond the Club’s control.

The Christmas Luncheon held at the Public Schools’ Club was also, as usual, a great success with a good attendance which included Lions family members and friends of the Club. Lion Graham (Mr Entertainment) again proved his worth as a “major organiser”, and Lion Warren led the Christmas carol singing.

The Ladies’ Melbourne Cup Luncheon had a large attendance of Club members and friends, enjoying this event: in fact, the attendance could have been near our record. All the usual programme events, i.e. Raffle, Punting and Hat Competition took place and, generally, a good time was had by all.

Last, but my no means least, we had our 50th

Anniversary on July 1st. This was a great success, a great night with a good attendance from Club members, both from our own Club and our Sister Clubs. Official guests included: H.E. the Governor and Hon Lion Kevin Scarce; Adelaide Lord Mayor Stephen Harwood and his wife, Emily; Member for Adelaide, Rachel Sanderson and her partner, Peter Rowe; and DG Ray and Lion Peggy Marks. Ex Lions, Ladies and friends also attended, and some of those Ladies were helpful in the organising and setting up of the venue. I think, as the Club, we were happy with the venue at the North Adelaide Football Club’s new function rooms, as well as the food and the service.

Overall, I think the year catered well on the entertainment side but, of course, we would also like more – perhaps next year.

Valé Lions Ben, Noel and GaryValé Lions Ben, Noel and GaryValé Lions Ben, Noel and GaryValé Lions Ben, Noel and Gary While reflecting on the positive achievements of our Club during its 50th year, it is with great sadness that we must also record the passing of three, long-serving, dedicated Lions. President Dean and Club members extend their sincere condolences to their Lions Ladies and families. We shall long remember the friendship and camaraderie we shared with them over the years.

His dedication and leadership qualities soon propelled him up the ranks, when he became the Club’s President the following year (’72-’73). He was to accept the Presidency on three further occasions (’82-’83, ’86-’87 and ’94-’95). Rising from Zone Chairmanship in ’76-’77, Ben was appointed as Deputy District Governor in ’77-’78, and then elected the District Governor for the ’84-’85 year.

His was a truly remarkable record of dedicated service to Lionism and those it assists. It included 20 years of perfect attendance; sponsorship of 15 new members; and as the recipient of numerous awards. Most notable of these were the James D. Richardson (‘91) and Melvin Jones Fellow (’93) Awards and, later that same year, with Life Membership of Lions International. Upon the sad demise of the Walkerville/North Adelaide Club in 1998, Lion Ben transferred to the Campbelltown Lions where he continued to serve until that Club also ceased in 2006. Finally, this senior Lion found a welcome home at the City of Adelaide Club in May of that year.

Valé Lion Valé Lion Valé Lion Valé Lion Noel Gully, Noel Gully, Noel Gully, Noel Gully, 15151515////03030303/192/192/192/1929999 –––– 24242424/0/0/0/01111/2011/2011/2011/2011 Having joined the City of Adelaide in 1980, Lion Noel moved swiftly through Club ranks and was elected its President for 1983/84. Two years later (‘85/’86) he became Zone Chairman and also Deputy District Governor the year after that (‘86/’87). He received numerous Club and District honours, most notable of which are the James Richardson (’96) and Melvin Jones Fellow (’98) Awards. He maintained perfect attendance throughout 18 very active years of community service with both Club and District.

As a professional Ocularist, it was only natural that Lion/Former Deputy District Governor, Noel Gully, took a great interest in the Lions Save Sight project, both at Club and District levels, where his expertise proved invaluable in Foundation and Eye Bank affairs. Following an untimely resignation in 2002, C.O.A. members were pleased to welcome Lion Noel back to the Pride in October last year. Sadly, his return to the fold became all too short, when he died from respiratory problems on January 24th.

Valé Lion Valé Lion Valé Lion Valé Lion Gary Loxton, Gary Loxton, Gary Loxton, Gary Loxton, 5555////11112222/1938/1938/1938/1938 –––– 1111/0/0/0/03333/2011/2011/2011/2011 Gary was inducted to membership of The City of Adelaide Lions Club in 1983, by then President, Noel Gully. His active interest of, and participation in, the Club’s various community service projects were promptly recognised and he was elected as a Director of the Board throughout the subsequent three years.

During the 1987/88 fiscal year he became the Club’s 3rd V.P. and then in the following years served as its 2nd (twice) and eventually its 1st V.P. for 1991/92. Accepting the Club’s Presidency for 1992/93, Lion Gary led the C.O.A. Lions with distinction throughout its 32nd year. While heavy business commitments and travelling partially restricted his participation in projects, he none-the-less remained as busy as time permitted, serving as a member of the fund-raising; social and welfare; and the community service committees. Whilst debilitating cancer sadly took its toll on his health, Lion Gary remained as active as possible, limited only as his deteriorating condition allowed.
