President Wendy’s Message
Hello everyone
Hello Everyone
I trust this finds you all well?
Gary and I attended a special District Convention held at the Workers Club in Goulburn on the 19 March - all motions were passed.
You have probably missed your opportunity to attend the next National Convention which will be held in Hobart 4-9 May. If you find that you are unable to attend could I please suggest that you attend the next District Convention which will be held in Queanbeyan from the 20-22 October 2017 as it is so close to home.
As you may have read in the paper the NSW and ACT Government have realised the importance of the Snowy Hydro Southcare service. There are changes happening with the new helicopter that is being supplied so there is now different funding of the organization. I am unsure what our roll will be with future commitment to fundraising.
Please look at the attached video which is on Utube from the email sent to you on March 24—it looks at the future of our organization.
If you are able please assist with the Farmers Market many hands make light work.
All the best.
President Wendy

Wendy’s Drama
A few weeks ago I organized a tradie to come and give me a quote. On leaving my home I discovered that my unlocked front door had jammed into the lock position the tradie undid the mechanism to see if it would unlock to no avail. He had to climb the back fence to leave he kindly tried to deal with the lock from the outside to no avail. I called the locksmith who was scheduled to attend within the next two hours as always when theses things happen I had an appointment that I needed to attend. He fixed the front door which took a great deal of elbow grease figurative speaking and had not had such a problem since he started working trust my door. As he was here I choose to have my back door looked at and that door knob was also replaced. During the week I was working in the back yard and you guessed It the back door closed and even though it was in the unlock position it jammed into the lock position. I positioned the outdoor setting stool to the back fence and tried to climb the fence to no avail. I looked over to my neighbour’s to discover the back bedroom window wide open hooray someone is home. I called out hello number 6 for a period of time and was finally heard when he removed his headphones. We had a chat and I gave him my keys and he unlocked the glass doors I was very greatful. Hooray rescued. After a phone call to the locksmith he returned the fol-lowing day I believe he got some stick from the office. Those blasted jammed locks.

WE SAID OUR GOOD BYES TO LION GEORGE
12 Club Members and 5 Partners were at
the Funeral Service to acknowledge the life
of Lion George Kelly and say farewell. There
were another four or five Lions members
from other clubs present.
Past members Robert Needham and Jim
Lole caught up with members Tony Marburg
and Roger Bean after the Church Service in
Pearce. They were not able to convince
them to re-join our Club.
NOMINATIONS NIGHT
The dinner meeting held 2 March 2017 was the
Club Nominations Night. All positions were filled
and the meeting on the 16th March will be the Club
elections.
A request has been received from LL Shirley Sutton
for some assistance to clean up the gardens at the
home of Leo and Shirley as Leo was not able to do
the work. A working bee was organised for the 1st
April with a number of members available to assist.
Special thanks were given to PP Peter Heathwood
and PP Tony Marburg and Andy Galley for the work
they had done painting the buildings at Lions Youth
Haven. The generous donation of equipment
thanks to Hunter Cocks and his work place Asset
Hire was acknowledged.
Approaches have already been made to 3 schools
for their involvement in the Youth of the Year com-
petition for next year.
Lion Sam Wong acknowledged the contribution
made by past member Lion George Kelly when he
drove the bus for many years and the service given
to the Chinese Community by taking elderly
members to the Show, Floriade and other venues.
In the lucky corne we had President Wendy win the
Lucky Door prize, Lyn Hull gained $6 from Joker
Poker and Trenton Lee was last man standing for
Heads and Tails.
Morning after Zoo’s Annual Party
ELECTION MEETING—16th March 2017
Lion Laurie McCreath outlined the 2017—2018
Board of the Lions Club of Canberra Valley.
Details appear elsewhere in this bulletin. The
new Board members were congratulated for their
commitment to our club for the next year.
There was a motion that adopted the 3 Office
Bearers—President Secretary and Treasurer as
the signatories for the Club Accounts with the
addition of PP Ross Thomas with any 2 to sign.
David McKenna had attended a seminar based
around the theme of a Festival of Ambitious
Ideas. The presentations were supposed to be based on the idea of someone born today living
to be 100 years old. There apparently were some interesting angles to the ideas.
President Wendy presented David Logan with a membership certificate for 25 years while David
McKenna was acknowledged for his 7 years as a member. Lion Phil Dodds has registered 54
years as a Lions Club member—well done.
Members had provided a clean up exercise at the home of Leo and Shirley Sutton in recent
times. President Wendy thanked those involved for their good work and the excellent outcome
that was achieved.
Members were advised of the 40th anniversary celebrations for the Canberra Kambah Club on
the 29th April. Also coming from the Zone meeting was details of the Canberra Brindabella
Clubs’ Fashion Parade on the 12th August and then on the 13th August Queanbeyan Club will
celebrate 60 years as a Lions Club.
Lions Youth Haven has a new Treasurer who is a member of the Canberra Belconnon Club.
Discussion was held regarding the Club’s ongoing commitment to Maureen Caelli for assistance
with her medication costs. The matter is to be further investigated before a recommendation s
made as the details of the Club’s commitment has obviously changed along the way.
We have been able to negotiate an alternate arrangement for our meetings at the Canberra
Southern Cross Club. Commencing April 16 we will have a meeting only in a separate room and
then move to the Bistro for a meal. This is similar to the arrangements that were being negotiated
by PP Tony Marburg but does not involve us having to relocate to another club. There will be an
adjustment period as we work through how the new arrangements will operate for the benefit of
club members.
Lion Maria advised that Lion Lyn Hull had been co-opted to drive the LYH Bus to assist with
getting students to the Schools Porgram being conducted at the farm.
Lion Roger Bean presented the Stan Sly Memorial trophy for the Under 12 Cricket Competition
to this years winner Eastlakes. An invitation has been extended for them to attend our Club’s
Junior Cricketers Night on the 6th April.
In the lucky corner this meeting we had Bob Baldwin winning the Lucky Door Prize while Glenn
Littlejohn took away $5 from the $70 kitty in Joker Poker and then for Heads and Tails Bob
Baldwin was the last man standing.

NEW POSTAL ADDRESS FOR CANBERRA VALLEY
The PO Box has changed—effective 1 April 2017 our postal address is:
PO Box 823, Mawson ACT 2607.
Since 1986 our club has used the Kingston Post Office for our mail delivery but it now inconvenient to use Kingston and we feel Mawson will be easier
to access for the time being.
The Training Wheels are On.
Lion David McKenna was a recent assistant for the Sunday
Markets BBQ. Ventured behind the hotplate and found new
skills such as egg juggling and bacon flipping good additions
for the CV. His biggest challenge though was cooking the
sausages when he does not even eat them. Maybe we should
bring the corn back!!
You will find the BBQ a nice friend during the winter months.
CLUB PROJECT WORKING BEE
The Club Legacy Project will be carried out at Lions Youth
Haven on Saturday 8th April 2017.
More details to come from Lion Andy Galley
Lions Want to Have Fun - Touchstone Story No. 91
Having fun while doing good has been a Lions specialty from the beginning.
In the early 1920s, many U.S. clubs had pep committees charged with enlivening rou-
tine club meetings. Lions soon entrusted the merrymaking function to a single energetic
and enthusiastic officer, known as the Tail Twister.
Students of Tail-Twisting lore will find rich veins of anecdote and remembrance among
longtime Lions and also in Lions publications.
How did the name Tail Twister come about? The World’s Biggest Doers, a 1949 history
of the Lions, described this origin story, as recounted by Lions founder Melvin Jones:
“One Sunday afternoon three or four of us were discussing this matter of putting pep into the meetings. One fellow
who had been born on a farm said we needed to do what used to be done on the farm. When a cow refused to go
through the gate, someone would grab her by the tail and twist. We all laughed, but one of the boys said, ‘Why isn’t
that a good name–tail twister?’”
The fact that lions–real lions–also have tails gave the name another amusing twist.
Now optional for all Lions clubs, the role of Tail Twister had been an established office under charter bylaws for dec-
ades. But as a 1941 article in LION Magazine made clear: “Of all the officers in the club, he [the Tail Twister] has no
rigid code, no well-defined plan of action. He must be a Lion of originality.”
Indeed, Tail Twisters have been remarkably creative in promoting fun and fellowship and boosting club treasuries by
“twisting” small fines from members for minor breaches of club rules, such as not wearing a nametag or talking dur-
ing a guest speaker’s presentation.
The fines system is both autocratic and democratic. No member can appeal a Tail Twister’s levy, and no member is
above paying it.
“President Westfall Fined on Southern Trip,” ran a banner headline over a full-page story in the April 1927 issue of
LION Magazine. While visiting the Columbia Lions Club in South Carolina, USA, International President William
Westfall forgot his Lions pin when changing “from his train clothes to his speaking clothes.” An alert Tail Twister
named Goldschmidt spotted Westfall’s bare lapels and fined him 10 cents, the going rate for such infractions in the
1920s.
Contests, quizzes, brainteasers, jokes, lighthearted songs and poems are time-tested tools of the tail-twisting trade.
Today’s practitioners can find and share fresh material on several club websites and on a Tail Twister page on Face-
book.
Concepts of humor do not always transfer across different cultures and times, and that has led to a gradual decline
in the tail-twisting tradition as Lions have expanded around the world. But every day in countless other ways—from
pancake breakfasts to picnics with needy kids to big parades at convention time—Lions still know how to have fun.
Shortest essay ever
This is a story of a 16 year-old boy from Tamworth who won the World's Shortest Essay competition. He was awarded a scholarship at the University of Sydney for his imagination and humour…Here it is… Shortest Essay: An English creative writing class was asked to write a concise essay containing the following elements: 1. Religion 2. Royalty 3. Physical Disability 4. Racism 5. Homosexuality The prize-winner wrote: 'My God,' cried the Queen, 'That one-legged coon is a poofter’.
TRANSITION TO CHANGE
Members of the Canberra Valley Lions Club are about to make a transition from the way that they conduct
their club meetings. The circumstance and demands of our venue has brought about the change and now we
need to move forward and build on the positives associated with this change.
Starting this meeting we will work a format for the business of the Club which will be inclusive of the
normal decisions made at the Board meeting. The Board will only need to meet as a separate body when the
matters for discussion require additional information to be gathered before they are reported back to the club.
The current practice of the club to report matters via the Secretary, Treasurer and Vice Presidents will now
form part of the Business of the Club and minutes will be presented for adoption at the next meeting.
The logistics of having guest speakers may need to be a bit of “suck it and see” approach as to how we
manage bringing outside people into the new environment. It is possible to have the speaker first and then if
they do not wish to stay for a meal then they are free to leave and the “business” of the club continues.
The usual items such as lucky door prize, joker poker and heads and tails can still be conducted.
It has been a normal thing for members to pay an administration cost each meeting and this would stay. The
amount has to be decided.
BOARD BITS
Meeting held Thursday 2nd March at Canberra southern
Cross Club.
10 present 1 apology
Draft copy of the Policy Minutes amendments were made
available. Copy to be sent to all club members for
discussion at a club meeting.
Membership Sub Committee—Lion Andy Galley has prepared a discussion paper for the
committee to use as a starting point .
Centennial Legacy Project working bee set for 8 April.
Alternate Venue—Lion Tony Marburg had been negotiating an alternate venue for our
meetings which would allow us to have a meeting room and then move to the Dining Area
for our shared meal. The move would allow for members to pay an administration charge
each meeting and then they would purchase a meal to their own liking. This matter has
been over ruled as a similar arrangement has been negotiated with the Southern Cross
Club taking away the need for the Club to relocate. The first meeting of the new arrange-
ment will be April 20.
Discussion took place regarding the Club’s current commitment to assist the medication
cost for Maureen Caelli. Matter to be presented to Club meeting on 16th April.
Club made a $300 donation to the Mt Druitt Club project for the Lions Deaf Camp. This is
an annual commitment made by our club.
Board endorsed the payment of $503.00 for additional paint on the Lions Youth Haven
building required by Lion Peter Heathwood. This would form part of the Clubs annual do-
nation to the Lions Youth Haven project.
The current Canberra Phone book has a listing for Lions Club of Canberra Valley showing
the old home address of the Kelly’s. To be actioned prior to the next phone book. Matter
has been sorted—we believe.
