The Little Bugs That Do A BIG Job!™

Our goal was to create the best fly repellent of any kind, but retain the benefits of Essential Oils. In the past, Essential Oils never kept up with synthetic chemicals.

Bye Bye Insects active ingredients are primarily Essential Oils, including Geraniol, Rosemary, Citronella, Peppermint and Lemongrass. All ingredients meet EPA’s 25(b) Minimum Risk requirements.

Smells GreatBesides great performance, Bye Bye Insects also smells and feels terrific. Pyrethroid fly sprays warn against use on human skin and few people like the smell of them. By comparison, Bye Bye Insects has a pleasant scent and can be used on yourself, your family and your horses.

Bye Bye Insects Is Also A Great BuyIt’s a concentrate so you can adjust its performance to what you need. You can use it full strength, but we expect many will find a 50% dilution will provide sufficient repellency.

After you use up your first quart spray bottle, don’t throw it away, instead refill it from our 3 quart pouch. Doing that and diluted by 50%, your cost per quart is only $7.49 delivered. Bye Bye Insects page 8 or spalding-labs.com/bbi19

1 Quart $22.95

3 Quart $44.95

Delivered + tax There are two versions of Bye Bye Insects. The 3 quart pouch and 1 quart sprayer are optimized for flies, but still effective for mosquitoes. The smaller pocket size 3 oz. and towellets, coming this summer, are optimized for mosquitoes.

All The Best Products!

This small pouch of Fly Predators is enough for 5 horses for one month and costs just $21.95 delivered, plus sales tax.

Fly Predators are tiny beneficial insects you sprinkle near manure areas once a month during warm weather. Fly Predators kill flies before they emerge, saving you from battling them all summer long.

They’re the safe, easy-to-use natural alternative to spraying gallons of spray (even ours) or hanging endless traps, only to have flies keep coming back. And they will keep coming back because sprays, baits and traps only affect the adult fly stage ignoring the 85% yet to emerge.

By comparison Fly Predators fix the problem rather than just treat the symptoms. They’re the ounce of prevention that’s worth pounds of cure. There’s no downside, only upside, as Fly Predators do not bother either people or animals.

So, if flies drive you and your horses crazy, try Fly Predators. You’ll soon know they’re the real deal in fly relief. The difference

is remarkable and chances are you’ll spend less than you did before.

For 43 years we’ve helped hundreds of thousands of horse and livestock owners control flies the smart, safe and easy way. Let us help you this year.

— Tom Spalding, Chief Fly Guy

wonderful little bugs.”—Terri K. Alexander, AR

Why Wait Another Year You know you’ll have flies again this summer. Rather than wait for the inevitable this year, make a change and see how much more enjoyable a “hardly-a-fly” summer can be.

Once someone tries Fly Predators for at least three shipments, most use them for as long as they have their animals. More than a few are now in their third decade of using Fly Predators.

In fact, the boarding stable featured in the first article about Fly Predators in 1978 is still a customer. See that article at: spalding-labs.com/awc9y

Too Many Flies Last Year? Fly Predators Can Fix That

"I've used Fly Predators for 40 years and

they have done a superb job on my place.” —Robert M. Miller, DVM Thousand Oaks, CA

robertmmiller.com

When you stop and think of all the things you bought last summer to help with flies, it probably added up to real money and a lot of effort. And did it work well?

This year don’t do the same “ole” thing and get the same “ole” results of too many flies. Use Fly Predators® brand beneficial insects. You’ll have fewer flies for sure and will probably spend less too.

Quick and Easy-To-UseEvery three to four weeks during warm months you will automatically receive a Fly Predator shipment. After they begin hatching, spend a few minutes sprinkling them where flies reproduce.

These are places where there is (or was) fresh manure or other rotting organic matter like spoiled hay or grass clippings. Just getting close to these areas is good enough since Fly Predators can travel 150 feet.

If your horses are pastured, put the Fly Predators out near their “favorite” potty spots as well as near the manure pile, corrals and barn area. No property is too big for Fly Predators.

No Pesticides, No Larvicides, No WorryUsing Fly Predators avoids any potential side effects from pesticides or feed thru larvicides. Just reading a pesticide warning label is perhaps the best advertisement for natural, organic Fly Predators. By contrast there is no warning label for Fly Predators.

The three species we ship in an optimized mix are: Muscidifurax raptorellus, Muscidifurax zaraptor and Spalangia endius or Spalangia cameroni. These are found naturally throughout North America so you likely already have some, just not enough for full fly control. You’ve never noticed them since they don’t bother people or animals or become a nuisance.

Easy-to-use. Just sprinkle

Fly Predators near all manure areas.

It just takes a few minutes and you’ve done your fly control for the

month.

Hardly A Fly All SeasonIf you make Fly Predators and perhaps a little “picking up” your primary fly control, your animals will enjoy far fewer flies all the time rather than just after you spray them. Your need to resort to sprays will

become occasional or even eliminated. However, sometimes you have no choice, so if you’re going to spray be smart about it, see page 8.

A Great ValueThe pouch above is enough for five horses

for one month and costs just $21.95 delivered plus sales tax. Larger pouches for more animals are available (we have customers with thousands of animals.) For most situations, the amount per horse at left provides excellent control. Fly Predators are great for other animals too. Varying climates, starting late, neighboring animals or manure management can affect quantities required. We urge you to call us for advice, particularly if you have any questions. We can almost always fix even the most miserable fly situation.

Optimum Start Is Just Before Flies The optimum time to start Fly Predators for your area is when the daytime highs get into the 60s. It’s always before the flies are a problem. By starting prior to the first fly hatch there will be relatively few viable fly pupae that survived the winter, so the ratio of Fly Predators to fly pupae (cocoons) is high.

This allows the Fly Predators to reduce the initial fly breeding population to a very low level, which can mean fewer flies all summer. Then continue with Fly Predator shipments every three to four weeks, stopping a month before the daytime temps drop down into the low 60s. If you start after the pest flies have built up to high levels, an initial shipment of two to three times the normal quantity will be needed.

Optimum Starting Time For Fly Predators: February March April May

“Two farms with adjoining property lines showed a dramatic difference. The horses were actually a “crow’s mile” apart, but the ones with the Fly Predators defending them had hardly a fly problem all summer, while the other horses were standing in the darkest part of their run-in shed, stomping and swishing their tails.” —Horse Journal

Actual Size

Female Fly Predators stop pest flies by laying their eggs in the fly’s pupa (cocoon) killing the immature fly.

By keeping the “good” Fly Predator population elevated, with regular releases, the “bad” pest fly population can be nearly eradicated.

Get The Real DealMake sure you get “Real” Fly Predators. Others advertising “cheaper” fly bugs ship 90% Nasonia, a species that published studies show is ineffective for large animals. By comparison dozens of studies over 40+ years have shown good efficacy for animals, large and small, with the species you get with real Fly Predators.

Stop Future Flies with Fly Predators®

Stop flies from reproducing by cleaning up the areas they breed in and adding Fly Predators. You simply sprinkle them near all fly reproduction areas, manure and rotting vegetation, every three to four weeks until the end of warm months. Fly Predators kill flies before they emerge. Start with a double or triple dose of Fly Predators for the first few shipments if flies are bad.

When used alone Fly Predators can take 3-4 weeks to control flies, as the existing adult flies (which Fly Predators don’t effect) need to die off. When used with traps or bait you can see a difference much sooner. It’s OK to spray your horses, just don’t do it near manure areas.

Fly Predators Are Highly Effective For All Kinds Of Animals Our satisfied customers range from the nation’s largest equine facilities to backyard horse folks as well as dairies, poultry and pork producers, kennels, zoos, feedlots, show and rodeo grounds, fairs, and more. Anyone with rotting organic matter on their property can benefit from using Fly Predators.

75 Fewer Flies

Fly Predators break the fly’s life cycle. The hard working Fly Predator finds and kills roughly 75 pest fly pupae before they hatch. Every female pest fly that doesn’t make it means potentially up to 900 fewer bothersome flies.

You may wonder what are the bug guys doing offering fly spray. Quite simply

this is a continuation of the past 43 years where we have been helping animal owners control flies the natural way with Fly Predators. For many of those years we’ve also

offered complementary products like our Bye Bye Odor and other companies’

Fly Traps and Fly Spray. Providing the full tool kit needed for great fly control better helps our customers. Now we are introducing Bye Bye Insects, our own Fly Spray.

Fly Spray Hasn’t Improved Much For DecadesMost popular Pyrethroid based fly sprays were registered in the 1980’s and 1990’s. UltraShield Red is an exception, it was registered in 2011. If you look closely at the label, they mostly have the same active ingredients.

We Wanted Ours To Be BetterOur first goal was to create the best fly and mosquito repellent. Second, we wanted to retain the benefits of using primarily Essential Oils. In the past, Essential Oils never kept up with synthetic chemicals in performance. The chart on the next page shows how Bye Bye Insects compares to popular fly sprays on horses.

And Smell Better TooBesides matching performance of Pyrethroid horse sprays, Bye Bye Insects also smells and feels terrific. Pyrethroid fly sprays warn against use on human skin and few people like the smell of them. Bye Bye Insects has a pleasant scent and can be used on yourself, your family and your horses.

Bye Bye Insects Has Been Rigorously TestedWe’ve been working on Bye Bye Insects since 2016 and are still improving it. As of December 2018, this has involved testing over 32 different formulations, with 6,000+ equine fly counts in 6 field studies conducted in two states. We’ve also completed over 15,000 human mosquito counts in 30 studies. Bye Bye Insects has been tested for repellency with Flies and Mosquitoes. We will be testing for other insects this summer.

Bye Bye Insects’ performance on horses was also judged by surveying almost 1,000 early release customers. Of those responding, 44% said it worked better and 45% said it worked the same as their current (mostly Pyrethroid) fly sprays. 47% said Bye Bye Insects would replace their current spray, 41% said maybe it would. This was before they knew how cost effective it was. Absorbine’s UltraShield Green and Red, Farnam’s Tri-Tec14 and Bronco, Pyranha’s Spray & Wipe, SmartPak’s OutSmart, Spalding’s Bye Bye Insects are trademarks of those respective companies. shown below with Sr Jordy

You Can Adjust Bye Bye Insects’ Performance To What Is Needed

Bye Bye Insects is a concentrate. It can be used at full strength, but we expect many will find a 50% dilution will still provide sufficient repellency. On your first quart spray bottle, use the full strength until half is gone, then

refill with tap water and see if you notice a difference. In our tests, half strength lasted

roughly 1-2 hours less than full strength.

Our Refill Pouch Is A Smart BuyAfter you use up your first quart ($22.95 delivered+tax) don’t throw it away. Instead refill it from our 3 quart EZ refill pouch. The ecological and stay fresh 3 quart pouch costs $44.95 delivered+tax.

That’s like buying 2 quarts and getting the third one free. Thus, each full strength refilled quart is only $14.98. Diluted to 50% it’s $7.49 per quart delivered.

That’s one of the lowest costs on the market for far better performance than other low-priced sprays.

The pouch is also far easier to use than the typical gallon size rigid bottles. Just put the tap in the opening of the quart bottle and squeeze the valve. It’s easy to create the concentration you need. Refilling is quick and spill free. Buying fly spray by the quart will seem silly after you try our pouch.

Bye Bye Insects Aroma Is Very Pleasant: Floral and Peppermint But, like perfume, a little can go a long way and too much can be overwhelming. So spray less Bye Bye Insects than you do with normal Fly Spray the first few times. If the aroma is OK, but you need it to last longer, spray heavier.

Also, like anything new to you and your horse, apply to a small area first to make sure there is no adverse reaction. It’s not likely, but there is no reason to find out you’re the one.

A Spray For People As Well As HorsesYou can use Bye Bye Insects on yourself as well as equines. Who hasn’t needed that? By comparison all Pyrethroid pesticide sprays, including Pyrethrins, Permethrin, Cypermethrin are NOT labeled for use on humans.

Why You Should Prefer Essential Oils Over Synthetic ChemicalsBye Bye Insects active ingredients are primarily Essential Oils, including Geraniol, Rosemary, Citronella, Peppermint and Lemongrass. These have been used for centuries with negligible adverse impact. Our Rosemary, Peppermint, Vanillin and Lemongrass are food grade quality as well.

The EPA has a list of ingredients known as 25(b) Minimum Risk which includes those Essential Oils. A product that only uses 25(b) ingredients (and Bye Bye Insects does) needs not to be registered with the EPA. This means the EPA has not reviewed Bye Bye Insects, but we have registered with every state requiring a license to distribute in their state.

Shake Before Each Use Or RefillThe Essential Oils in Bye Bye Insects can separate to the top with the aqueous solution at the bottom, much like an oil and vinegar salad dressing, Since the sprayer pulls from the bottom of the bottle, if you don’t shake it before use, you’ll be spraying mostly water which won’t repel anything. Also give the refill pouch a good shake before dispensing.

Have We Made The Perfect Spray? Getting close but not yet. One issue is with slight yellow staining on white and grey hair. If used lightly, the staining is minimal and will wear off over time. Other than on white and grey hair, this is not noticeable. We are working on fixing this for next year. More on Bye Bye Insects at: spalding-labs.com/bbi19

Amazing Bye Bye Odor®

spalding-labs.com/19bbo • 1-800-560-1103

Easy-to-Use, Just a Light MistThe most popular Bye Bye Odor is the 4 oz. concentrate. For stalls simply pour the 4 oz. bottle into a clean 2 to 3 gallon garden-type, pump-up sprayer and add tap water. Clean stalls as you normally do, spray a light mist of Bye Bye Odor on the wet spots then re-bed. Regular daily usage is suggested for best results. Within a few days of daily application (sometimes just overnight) the unpleasant smell and dangerous ammonia will be gone.

Cost EffectiveOne 4 oz. bottle of Bye Bye Odor Concentrate costing $19.95 will treat 5 horse stalls for one month. For larger facilities, a 32 oz. bottle ($119.95) treats 40 stalls for one month.

Bye Bye Odor Is Great For: Stalls, Trailers, Pens, Saddle Blankets, Kennels, Dog Beds, Cages, Sweaty Shoes, Cat Litter and More! The microbes used in Bye Bye Odor are effective against manure, urine, perspiration and many other funky smells.

Customers are finding uses that we never imagined, like the black water tank of live-in horse trailers, for winter blankets, dog beds, sweaty gym clothes and shoes, musty closets, around toilets, truck floor mats, carpets, furniture, kitty litter boxes, skunked dogs and more. If it pees, poops, sweats or is moldy, Bye Bye Odor will help their areas and things not smell. More info at: spalding-labs.com/19bbo

4 oz. 32 oz. Concentrate Concentrate

Bye Bye Odor® is a safe microbial solution that can substantially reduce or eliminate odors and ammonia vapors caused by urine and manure. The Bye Bye Odor microbes, when wet, consume and break down the organics that cause the smell and ammonia vapor, unlike other products that simply soak up urine for removal or try to capture the ammonia vapors.

That Familiar Barn Smell May Be Putting Your Horses At RiskVeterinary research has indicated that ammonia levels in a horse stall or trailer can exceed 200 parts per million (ppm). For humans, OSHA has set the 15-minute exposure limit for ammonia at 35 ppm. This means that both horses and horse owners can be exposed to very high and unhealthy amounts of ammonia when inside barns or trailers. Without realizing it, you can be adversely affecting your horse’s health and performance.

We’ve measured stalls at 120 ppm ammonia (cleaned only two days earlier), yet the owner didn’t think their stalls smelled bad. After an application of Bye Bye Odor, 24 hours later the ammonia levels were reduced to 10 to 15 ppm. Ammonia is heavier than air so it’s near ground level where your horse’s nostrils can be.

To appreciate how bad ammonia might be in your barn, kneel down and take a whiff.

Eliminates Barn Odor That’s Attracting FliesAnother benefit of a clean-smelling barn can be fewer flies. That’s because flies’ amazing sense of smell lets them find stinky rotting organic matter (the good stuff) from a long way away. If you ever wondered why there are more flies in your barn than elsewhere, guess what, it might be a super-sized stinky fly magnet. Use Bye Bye Odor to eliminate harmful ammonia and barn odor. Let the flies find someone else’s stinky barn instead.

“Within days of starting to use Bye Bye Odor, our barn smelled terrific.”

“Although it takes a couple of days to really notice the difference, once that was done we became nearly addicted to using this spray. A daily light mist was all it took to keep the stalls fresh, as well as any equipment we wanted to deodorize. It has a fresh, natural scent, it simply keeps working. We could deodorize virtually anything. Our Best Buy is Bye Bye Odor. It’s inexpensive and easy-to-use”. —Horse Journal

PreStrike® Mosquito Torpedoes are used extensively by the mosquito control pros, FEMA, DOD and County abatement districts etc. They are more effective than the common Bti mosquito dunks you buy in hardware stores. Mosquito Torpedoes can stop 95% of mosquitoes from successfully developing where Bti dunks stop roughly 35%. Simply plop them in all water troughs, small ponds, stock tanks, etc., and you’re protected for up to 60 days.

The active ingredient in Mosquito Torpedoes is (S-Methoprene) an IGR (Insect Growth Regulator) that affects mosquitoes at every life stage prior to emergence. This ingredient is very specific to Mosquitoes and does not harm any creature with a spine. So it’s

safe for people, livestock, fish, frogs, birds, etc. Torpedoes are approved for use in stock tanks in the US (Bti dunks are not). In many tropical countries with severe mosquito problems, Torpedoes are used in human drinking water.

The advantage for horse owners, compared to dunks, is one little Torpedo tablet will provide control for 300 gallons for up to 60 days, they don’t cloud the water, they sink to the bottom so they don’t become snack food and as long as you can still see them, they are active. ($9.49 for a five-pack.) More mosquito info at: spalding-labs.com/pa3mk Also check out our Bye Bye Insects Mosquito repellent on page 8.

Traps can complement Fly Predators as they’ll get the adult flies coming in from neighbors and the few flies your Fly Predators might not have stopped in time. First, identify what kind of flies are bugging your animal: Bothers (House Flies) or Biters (Stable Flies). Second, you need to pick the right trap as no single trap will catch every kind of pest fly. Third, you need to put those traps in the right locations.

Most Horse Owners Usually Need At Least Three Different TrapsUse Odor traps for House Flies (A, C, D, E,), the stinky ones you add water to, and put those away from your animals, never in the barn. Also use Sticky traps (B.) in the barn to catch House Flies and many other flying insects. For Biting Stable Flies the only one that catches the leg biters is the Bite Free (F.).

House Fly Odor TrapsOur choice for House Fly odor traps is Starbar’s®. Use the reusable Terminator Pro® (E. $23.99) if you want the highest performance. Use the disposable Giant Fly Relief™ bag (D. $5.99) if you are hanging traps—it’s double the size of the regular Fly Relief™ bag, also available for $4.99. The Trap ‘N Toss® (C. $5.99) can sit on the ground or hang. The Milk Jugg traps (A. $10.99 for two) are the lowest cost and most ecological. Extra attractant $8.95 for 8 Pods. Free gloves included with every trap shipment.

House Fly Sticky TrapsThe yellow EZ Trap® (B. $9.99 for two) has more surface area to catch more flies and other flying insects than messy coils and looks far better. This can be rinsed and re-used a few times.

Biting Stable Fly TrapsThe Bite Free™ Stable Fly trap (F. $10.49) is a trap that almost every horse owner should have but most don’t. This was the most effective trap tested in an USDA report on Biting Stable Flies. It’s essential if you have horses stomping and twitching. It can be rinsed off a few times too.

Horse and Deer Fly TrapHorse Flies, Deer Flies and Green Heads are of the Tabanidae family. These Bad Boys (actually Bad Girls since the males don’t bite) are the largest flies with the most painful bite. Horses hate these flies and will do anything to get away from them. Since these are water breeders, Fly Predators cannot stop their reproduction. The only control available are specialty traps that are designed to attract Tabanid flies.

Place the H-Trap in a sunny area between the source of Tabanid Flies, typically ponds and streams and your animals (and beyond your animals’ reach). Horse and Deer Flies are

attracted to the dark ball, thinking it is an animal and a blood meal. When the flies hit the ball, they fly up and get trapped in the collection cup at the top. Note this trap only catches Tabanids.

One H-Trap will cover a 5 horse outdoor paddock of about 2.5 acres. This trap is sturdy, chemical free and with its one leg, is easy to set up and move. It’s UV resistant and wind stable

with a gyroscopic upper bracket plus anti-rotation ground anchor. Assembly is not difficult and it has a two year warranty for mechanical defects. It will last for years

if brought in during winter and high wind storms.

Buy From Those Who Know TrapsLots of places sell fly traps, but few know much about them. The type of trap and where you put them make a huge difference in their effectiveness.

If you know more than the sales person about traps after reading just this, call us instead.

Protect Your Horses From The Meanest Flies Out There

New H-Trap Lure Attracts Even More Horse & Deer FliesThis lure contains 1-octen-3-ol, a chemical which has been proven to attract Tabanid flies and can increase the catch rate of the H-Trap from 3 to 5 times. It will last for about 1 month. $16.95 for one, $44.95 for 3. Available only for CO, CT, IN, FL, GA, KY, LA, MA, NC, NJ, NY, NH, OH, PA, TN.

The Most Effective Tabanidae TrapA research study on the H-Trap found it collected almost four times as many flies as the Horse Pal trap and over twice as many flies as the Nzi trap. $299.95 + sales tax & shipping. More info at: spalding-labs.com/qmvrq

A Five Minute Read To Few FliesOften the simple release of Fly Predators, plus modest improvements in manure management, perhaps a few traps and occasional spraying, is all that will be needed

Don’t Make Your Spreader A Rolling Fly FactoryA common mistake is keeping the manure spreader next to the barn and not spreading until it is completely filled. If that takes more than 8 days you are creating a fly breeding hot spot on wheels. Run the spreader at least weekly no matter how full it is. You have an extra few days beyond the 5th day when the pupae are formed, as the mechanical action of spreading will likely damage most pupae that might have successfully formed in the spreader.

By gaining some basic understanding of House Fly and Stable Fly biology, particularly what encourages and discourages their reproduction, you can dramatically reduce fly numbers to very tolerable or hardly noticeable levels.

Basic Fly BiologyFlies are nature’s decomposers. When keeping and feeding animals in relatively small areas, we produce an overabundance of material that needs to decompose (manure, hay, spilled grain, etc.), which can lead to an

overabundance of flies.

Flies have four life stages (chart right), the time spent in each stage depends on temperature. The fastest total time, from egg to adult is 8 days at temperatures around 85°F and rotting organic matter remaining between 40%-60% moisture content.

Adult flies only make up about 15% of a total fly population at any given time. The other 85% are eggs, larvae, and pupae.

Adult House Flies lay eggs on or near rotting organic matter. Eggs hatch within

hours into larvae (maggots). The larvae feed on the rotting organic matter for about 5 days before they pupate (form a cocoon).

The pupa is light to dark brown and looks very much like a dark grain of rice or a rodent dropping. Over about 3 days inside the pupa the larva metamorphose into an adult fly. Like a caterpillar turns into a butterfly inside its cocoon.

Pupae are generally found just a little under or to the sides of the rotting organic matter. The more pupae you see, the worse the coming flies will be.

The pupa is the life stage the Fly Predator attacks to kill the developing fly. The pupal stage is important for the flies long term survival, as this stage protects the fly through winter. When temperatures start dipping below 47°F, the pupa goes

into diapause (hibernation). At this point they become vulnerable to ground temperatures lower than 32°F.

The mortality rate is affected by the environment. Too hot or too cold or too wet or too dry will dramatically reduce flies survival. The other factor is predation. A number of creatures prey on flies in their various life stages including Fly Predators, beetles, mites, birds and ants. Add more predators, such as Fly Predators, free range chickens or Guinea Hens and you’ll have fewer flies.

Identify The FlyThe first step is to identify the insect(s) that are bothering you and your animals. With horses, the bothersome flies will likely be House Flies (typically 80% of total) and Biting Stable Flies (typically 20%). House Flies will be the ones going for the moisture in the eyes of your horse, but can also be anywhere on the animals. Biting Stables Flies will be on the fore legs and flanks causing your horse to stomp and twitch. Identification is

important because these two flies can come from dramatically different places.

Preventing Flies Fixes The Problem Using a preventive solution like Fly Predators or making the area less “fly friendly” requires that you treat the locations where the pest flies are reproducing.

In many cases this is NOT where you see the adult flies that are bothering you or your animals. While you may often see large numbers of flies in the barn, if it is being cleaned regularly, they are unlikely to be breeding there. Instead they most likely are coming from manure areas in pastures/corrals, a manure pile, or other moist rotting organic matter. Those are the areas you put your Fly Predators.

Manure ManagementFor most animal owners, manure management is THE most important variable in any fly control

program simply because this is the largest single source of (from a House Fly’s perspective) “the good stuff.”

Collecting manure daily, or at least once every 3-4 days is ideal.

If you live in a drier climate with little summer rain or humidity, you can spread

House Fly The most likely fly on your horse’s face as it goes for the moisture in the eyes. They can be elsewhere on your horse and in your barn, but will be the only ones heading to your house.

Bot Fly Lays eggs where the horse can reach with its mouth as this is an internal parasite. Best defense is to remove egg masses with damp towel.

the manure thin, so that it dries to less than 40% moisture within a couple days, effectively killing fly larvae.

If your area has high humidity or regular rain in the summer, it is better to collect your manure on the same schedule, but then stock pile it rather than spread it. When properly managed, manure piles will generate a lot of heat, effectively killing the flies developing within. Because of this, one big pile is better than several small piles as the bigger pile generates more heat, leaving only about the outer 6” suitable for fly development. Turning the edges of the pile up onto the top once a week can even stop those few flies from developing. If you are dealing with a smaller pile, try covering it in black plastic to increase the heat.

Do not apply fresh manure to gardens or yards and then water it. That will create a perfect fly breeding hot spot. Properly composted manure or manure 90 days or older

will not produce flies even if damp.

Eliminate Potential Breeding Materials This includes rotting round bales, loose

straw, mulch, leaves, spoiled hay, grass clippings, manure, garbage, and moist soil with animal manure. Avoid leaving moist pet foods outdoors and remove fallen, fermenting, or over-ripe fruits from the ground.

More Rain Equals More FliesIf you have more rain than normal you will likely see more flies. This is because more material is staying in the ideal 40%-80% moisture range for longer, leaving more material perfect for fly breeding than normal. This is one of the reasons why there are “good” and “bad” fly years. Also, it only takes one burst of wet weather, in an otherwise dry year, to yield a larger than normal hatch of flies, which can then hang around for nearly

a month. Often, quickly adding extra Fly Predators, plus more Traps can bring the pest flies back under control. Use Fly Spray to provide relief until the Traps and Fly Predators catch up.

General SanitationIn addition to manure management, there are lots of other places flies reproduce or are attracted to. It sounds simple but overall sanitation is an important and effective way to control flies too. A little extra work “neating up” can yield a big fly reduction.

All outside trash and manure areas should be kept clean. Use garbage cans with tight fitting lids. Locate the garbage cans as far away from the house or buildings as possible.

Clean Up Weeds Surprising as it may seem, flies need a place to rest and get out of the hot and cool temperatures. Weeds and tall grasses are perfect for this, so if you remove weeds from

around buildings you can “encourage” pest flies to hang out elsewhere.

Reduce Inward MigrationIf your neighbors have animals, some of the flies you’re seeing are likely from them. The closer they are and the more animals they have the bigger the problem. Two horses 1/4 mile away are not a big issue, but a feedlot across the street is. Biting Stable Flies can travel much farther, particularly if there is a strong prevailing breeze.

The best solution is to get your neighbors to control their flies, which means there will be fewer visiting you. If it’s only a few animals, purchasing some extra Fly Predators for their animals may be the most pragmatic solution. If you can’t get your neighbors to control their flies, then put multiple traps, of the correct type, between you and the source of those unwanted visitors. You can also use Bye Bye Odor in your barn and around garbage and dumpsters to reduce the smell that attracts flies.

Fly BaitsIf you are not adverse to using pesticide fly baits, they can be effective for House Flies and are far better than premise spraying. This is because

development.

Dung Beetle populations can be decimated by the toxicity of manure from the use of de-wormers. Select a de-wormer that offers lower toxicity to beetles.

MitesTiny Mites (1/32 inch or less in length) are found practically everywhere, including the breeding sites of the Stable Fly and House Fly. Predaceous mites, such as those in the family Macrochelidae can be important natural enemies of these pest species. By feeding on eggs and young maggots, one mite can kill up to 36 House Flies per day.

Mites are among the first predators to colonize manure because they disperse by phoresy; i.e., they “hitch-hike” on other insects. Mites can be best used by conserving their natural populations by keeping manure dry with good ventilation and good drainage. Avoid the use of larvicides unless their effects are known to be limited to just the pest flies.

attractants in fly bait do not interest Fly Predators or any other Beneficials, whereas most sprays are indiscriminate and kill all the good Beneficials more effectively than the pest flies. This will make your fly problem worse in a few weeks.

Normally baits will only be needed to quickly reduce an existing House Fly population until the Fly Predators take control.

Other Beneficials You Want to EncourageDung BeetlesDung Beetle is the common name for beetles that are members of the Scarabaeidae family. These beetles breed, feed and tunnel in dung deposited on pastures. Through their activities, these beetles break up and bury the dung pat. This dries up the pat and removes it as a breeding site for pest flies. Hence, Dung Beetles are most efficient in reducing numbers of flies if the beetles disperse and bury the dung within a few days of its deposition before the flies can finish their

Actual Size

Background on the Biting Stable FlyStable Flies resemble House Flies with their dull appearance and their 4 dark stripes on the upper body. These flies are 3/16” to 5/16” long. The abdomen has dark spots. “Checkerboard” markings are obvious on the top side of the abdomen. Stable Flies have a needle-like, stiff, piercing mouthpart called a proboscis.

Both sexes of Stable Flies feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals, including people, dogs and horses. They are often a pest on farms that have cattle in pastures and feedlots. They can often bite through clothing, especially on the ankles. Dogs that are kept outdoors can be tormented and severely bitten, especially on the ears. Adult flies do not feed at night. After a blood meal, they fly to a vertical surface to digest their food.

Females lay 40 to 80 eggs per batch and 10 to 12 batches in a lifetime. Larvae can develope in urine-soaked straw, chicken manure, compost piles, wet hay bales and grass clippings. The Stable Fly also breeds in vegetation strewn along the shorelines of lakes and bays and in accumulations of wet grass clippings from yards and golf courses.

Maggots burrow into the breeding material, following moisture inward as the substrate dries. Under favorable conditions, the entire egg-to-adult lifecycle is from 21-25 days. This can be as long as 78 days in unfavorable conditions or in cool climates. Before pupation, the mature larva crawls to drier parts of the medium. Stable Flies overwinter as larvae or pupae.

Stable Flies can move great distances. This often occurs when they are picked up by weather fronts and carried aloft for several hundred miles. Uninfested areas thus can become heavily infested almost overnight.

Fly Predators parasitize Stable Flies and are effective at control. Proper sanitation and management of breeding areas will also help control this pest. Research at Texas A&M University has shown that over 1 million Stable Flies may develope from the residue of one round bale feeding site. By cleaning any straw and hay and spilled feed that accumulates in horse pens and spreading it out to dry or disposing of it in a compost pile, Stable Fly numbers can be significantly reduced. Stable Flies are not attracted to “odor” traps. Since after a blood meal the adults fly to a vertical surface to digest their food, residual pesticide applied to those surfaces are often effective in decreasing Stable Fly populations.

Actual Size

Background on the House FlyHouse Flies are 3/16” to 5/16” in length and black with four dark stripes on their thorax. The abdomen is greyish or yellowish at the sides and has a dark stripe down the middle. These flies have fleshy sponging mouthparts and do not bite. The eyes are reddish and are well separated in males. The eyes have a golden stripe around the outer edge. The legs are hairy with adhesive pads and sharp claws. The wings are clear and are held level and straight back.

The House Fly is probably the most common fly found around horses. Most flies caught in houses are House Flies. The House Fly causes problems in stables, poultry farms, dairies, sanitary landfills, or other sources of rotting organic matter of plant or animal origin that attract egg-laying females.

House Flies have been implicated in the spread of over 30 bacterial and protozoan diseases. Fortunately, House Flies do not transmit many of these diseases with great frequency. But because they could transmit serious diseases, House Flies are considered to be a greater threat to human health than most other insects.

The female lays each batch of approximately 150 eggs on wet, decaying organic matter lying in the open (i.e., on wet garbage, animal manure, spilled feed, bedding, decaying fruit, compost piles, rotting plant debris, landfills). She can lay 4 to 6 batches in a lifetime.

These eggs usually hatch within 24 hours into tiny, creamy-white maggots that feed in the waste. Mature maggots migrate away from their food sources in search of suitable sites for pupation (forming their cocoons). They change into the pupal stage from which the adult flies emerge. It takes about 2 weeks for a fly to go from the egg to adult stage, but at the optimum summertime temperature this can be as few as 8 days. Males live for 2 weeks and females for up to 3.5 weeks.

Adult flies feed on a wide range of materials, including manure, garbage, fresh and decaying fruit, and most human food. Adult flies are very strong fliers and can travel ¼ mile and sometimes much farther. However, usually they develope at the same facility where you see the adults.

This species normally is one of the main problems in animal operations. Fortunately they are very effectively controlled by Fly Predators.

Actual Size

Background on the Deer Fly and Horse FlyTabanidae include both Deer Flies and Horse Flies. Deer Flies are smaller than Horse Flies (1/2 inch long). Their wings are tinted smoky brown or have dark patterns. Their thorax is greenish-yellow with dark stripes. The eyes touch each other on the top of the head in males and are separated in the females.

Horse Flies are like Deer Flies but much larger and heavier-bodied (1/2” to 3/4” long). Their wings are clear and their thorax is usually brownish-grey striped. The abdomen may be orange-and-black patterned or similar to the coloration of the thorax.

Deer Flies are strong fliers going many miles. They are painful blood feeders and frequently become serious pests of livestock and humans. They are also known as “cedar flies” in parts of the United States. The males are found on flowers and feed on nectar and pollen. The females are usually seen circling your head.

The larvae of Deer and Horse Flies are semi-aquatic and are mostly found in shallow water or moist soil along the edges of ponds, dug-outs, small streams and cattail areas of some ditches.

The Horse Fly, like the Deer Fly, is extremely difficult to control. They cause intense pain at the site of their bite, which is very annoying to the horse as well as the rider. Unlike the Horse Fly, which lumbers around you before biting, Deer Flies zoom in, circle fast and bite quickly. If repellents or insecticides are used, some decrease in feeding may occur but many will still feed.

Fly Predators, House Fly traps and baits have no impact on these pests. The H-Trap is effective for Horse Flies and Deer Flies, as well as Greenheads, and all members of the Tabanidae family. These large biting flies are attracted visually to the black ball and when they discover the ball is not a source of blood, they fly upward to leave, eventually ending up in the collection cup at the top. Cost is $299.99 plus tax and shipping.

Deer and Horse Fly Horn FlyBackground on the Horn FlyAdult Horn Flies are slender, 3/16” long and are about 1/2 the size of a typical House Fly.

Horn Fly adults typically occur only on cattle ranches and grazing dairies but they may also attack horses, sheep, goats, mules and dogs that are close. The flies spend most of their life on the host animal, usually congregating on the back and shoulders. During very hot or rainy weather, the flies move to the underside of the belly.

Large numbers of flies (more than 200 per animal) cause lower weight gains and milk yields. Animals become so annoyed that they may injure themselves while attempting to dislodge the flies. Horn Flies seldom bite people. Females leave the host briefly to lay eggs only on very fresh, undisturbed manure of cattle grazing on forages. Hence, Horn Flies (Face Flies too) always come only from pastured cattle. Normally, after cattle are removed, Horn Fly and Face Fly populations rapidly decrease. Fly Predators will have some effect on Horn Flies but have to be distributed in the pastures where cow pats are.

For dairies we offer the very effective Cow•Vac® for Horn Fly control. See spalding-labs.com/hf7fq

Face FlyBackground on the Face FlyThese small (1/4 inch long), non-biting flies are greyish-brown in color with 4 dark stripes on the thorax and a grey-black patterned abdomen.

Face Flies superficially look like House Flies but they lay their eggs only on fresh undisturbed cattle manure in pastures. The life cycle takes about 2 weeks. Face Flies are pests of cattle in pastures. The adult female flies tend to feed on secretions from the eyes, nostrils, and mouths, causing extreme annoyance and allowing for the transmission of pinkeye and other eye diseases. The pupal case is extremely hard and difficult for the Fly Predators to penetrate; therefore, research would indicate they should have little impact on this species. However, some customers have reported a reduction in Face Flies with use of Fly Predators.

Mosquitoes Bot Fly

An adult Bot Fly laying an egg on a horse’s leg.

Actual Size

Background on the Bot FlyMost horses in the U.S. are infested with one to three different species of Bot Flies sometime during the year. Bots may damage horses directly and indirectly. The adults resemble a honey bee and may cause some horses to hurt themselves or their handler while trying to flee from the egg-laying adult. The larval stage also may cause a variety of digestive tract problems.

Bots mate in the vicinity of horses and lay eggs while in flight by darting in and laying a pale yellow or grayish egg, usually attached to the forelegs (primarily G. intestinalis), but can be found in other areas. Adult females may lay 500 to 1,000 eggs. Incubation is about 5 days, after which they are stimulated to hatch within a few seconds from the warmth

and moisture of the horse’s tongue and lips.

All species penetrate the soft tissue of the horse’s mouth, where they spend approximately 3 weeks, which causes pain and irritation to the horse’s mouth, causing rubbing. They then migrate to the stomach or small intestine, where they attach and feed for several months.

In the digestive tract severe damage can be caused in the form of edema, blockage, ulcers, rupture, etc. When conditions become right, Bots detach and pass out with the feces. Pupation takes place usually in the top layer of soil under the dung pile. Adults emerge 2 weeks to 2 months later and repeat the process. MOSQUITOCulicidae

Quick Tips—Mosquitoesu Remove all

unnecessary standing water, unused troughs, wheelbarrows, pots, pools, buckets, etc.

u Empty and refill all necessary standing water receptacles every week

u Add Mosquito Torpedo or mosquito fish to stock tanks, water troughs, ponds

u Add Blue Bird houses — they consume many insects, including mosquitoes

u Wear white shirts and hats, not dark

u Call your county vector control for help and tips specific to your area

Background on MosquitoesLike pest flies, mosquitoes have very specific requirements to survive, so minimizing mosquito reproduction almost always offers the biggest benefit.

All the mosquito species in the U.S. fall into two types. The Floodwater Mosquito reproduces in intermittent water such as rainwater runoff that pools in depressions or flood irrigated fields that only have standing water periodically (lasting more than 3 days), then dry out. The Semi-Permanent Mosquito reproduces in continuous still water locations like catch basins, ditches, stock tanks, ponds, and marshes. None reproduce in moving water.

If you are getting bitten during the daytime, and only occasionally, then it's most likely Floodwater Mosquitoes that came from intermittent water. If getting bitten constantly and mostly just before dusk, those probably are Semi-Permanent Mosquitoes from continuous water that is nearby.

Floodwater Mosquitoes can go quite a distance, drifting with the breeze. The Semi-Permanent Mosquitoes do not range as far, typically 1/4 mile, so they are likely reproducing near to you which means you, can prevent them.

Prevention comes from either removing or changing any standing water frequently or stopping the reproduction in that water by adding a Mosquito Torpedo (page 17), Bti or mosquito fish. Be aware that if you dump out your horse’s water trough frequently, you could be creating a fly factory, if you dump it on manure that now will be kept damp. Dump the water away from manure, or put a Torpedo in trough once every 60 days. (Note: The round Bti dunks you get from a hardware store should not be put in animal water.)

Like flies, mosquitoes use weeds to rest in out of the sun, so keep things well trimmed near you and your animals and force the bugs to rest elsewhere. Mosquitoes don’t tolerate wave action, so removing the plants growing in the shallow water at

the edges of ponds and lakes is helpful.

For mosquitoes that are coming from afar, or if you happen to be in their territory, repellents help and so can wearing

a white shirt and hat, instead of dark colors. Mosquitoes and many other biting flies don’t see white, but are attracted to dark shapes. Never use DEET on your animals. Mosquitoes cannot fly well at wind speeds above 7 mph so try fans. More at: spalding-labs.com/pa3mk
