by Plez HillFostering cats and dogs is an act of love for
those connected with the Calaveras County Hu-mane Society Adoption Center located at 576 E. St. Charles St. (Hwy. 49) in San Andreas. Most of the fostered animals have been saved from the county animal shelter in hopes that some-one will adopt them.
How much love does it take to foster? Ask Becky Hazleton of Valley Springs who is a vol-unteer at the Adoption Center. She currently has 19 fosters – all cats. On a recent visit to the Center I met one of Hazleton’s fosters. His name is McGee, a four-year-old Manx with medium hair. McGee has always lived indoors. He came from a home that went into foreclosure and the owners left him behind in hopes that he would fi nd a good home. All the animals at the Adop-tion Center have a history. Hazleton says she knows all of her fosters by name and can distin-guish between them by their colors and mark-ings.
While at the Center I found 10 fostered cats ready to be adopted, but was told there are some 80 cats and three puppies currently in foster care waiting for adoption. All of the animals are current on their shots and have been vaccinated.
Mary Pons, also from Valley Springs, is a volunteer who is helping to set-up the Center. She said volunteers and fosters are needed for new animals coming from the county’s animal shelter and elsewhere. Pons said the Center is operating at temporary hours on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but will expand its hours of operation once a schedule is put in place with newly recruited volunteers.
Pons said the Adoption Center is currently running a Christmas Special on adopting cats with a donation of $25 rather than the regular $50 per cat. Dogs can be adopted for a donation of $250.
For more information on volunteering and fostering, Pons can be reached at (209) 772-8882 or [email protected].
b y Plez HillSanta’s Express, a program sponsored by
the Resource Connection Food Bank and a community Santa’s Express Committee, expects to feed more than 1,300 families in Calaveras County over the Christmas holi-day, according to Jeannie Hayward, program director for the Food Bank.
Hayward said red Santa’s Express boxes have been located throughout Calaveras County where people can donate non-per-ishable food until Dec. 17. She credits the as-sistance of the Boy Scouts, schools, churches and businesses in helping to collect the food.
“Stuff Th e Bus” is a program that has also helped Santa’s Express receive donated food for the needy. “Jamie Azarvand, transit man-ager for Calaveras Public Works, approached the Food Bank with the idea of having Ca-laveras County Transit buses park at grocery

by Plez HillTh is past week Santa Claus drove his miniature sleigh with
tiny reindeer from the North Pole to our area so he could par-ticipate in local parades and other events. What a wonderful ex-perience it was meeting Santa! He is just as funny and nice as I thought he would be. He has the nicest laugh and he brings joy and happiness to everyone he meets and to those who have never seen him.
Santa told TLSN how much he enjoyed seeing and meeting all the boys and girls, and adults, too. He said he will never forget the warm welcome everyone gave him. Unfortunately, we did not get an opportunity to speak to Santa very long. He told us that he had to return to the North Pole so he could get ready for Christ-mas Eve. He said he would return then.
It was late at night when Santa and I arrived at a house oc-cupied by some of his friends. Santa shook my hand and said, “Good-bye.” He quickly made his way to the roof. In the darkness I could barely make them out, but sure enough, there was Dash-er, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. Looking a bit closer I could see something like a red light. “Th at must be Rudolph,” I said to myself.
Santa looked down at me and waved good-bye and gave out a jolly laugh. Th en, suddenly, Santa in his miniature sleigh with its tiny reindeer took-off and disappeared into the darkness. Th e noise from the reindeers’ hoofs, Santa’s laughter and the ringing bells attached to each of the reindeer must have awakened people residing in nearby houses. I saw their house lights go on just as Santa was leaving. Th ey will never believe what they just missed.
In this issue of TLSN you have an opportunity to see some of the parades Santa appeared in from Valley Springs to Lodi to Galt, plus the Sutter Creek Old Fashion Christmas Open House. All of us at TLSN hope you will enjoy the Holiday Spirit ex-pressed in this Special Parade & Events Issue.

Your belief in yourself is the most telling factor in determining your level of success and happiness. I have this issue at times, es-pecially when there are so many life changes I want to make. I have to frequently remind myself that I have the power within me to make these changes. So here are some of my thoughts on what we can do to help us ac-complish our goals.
Th ink about something you are working on or wanting to improve in your life. Maybe you want to be fi t, more abundant in love, in a relationship or fi nd a better job. Just bring one to mind right now and ask yourself this question-where am I on the scale below?
1. I doubt it2. I hope so3. I believe it4. I know it5. I am itIf you are in doubt you must get yourself
out of doubt if you really want to succeed. Th e fi rst thing you must do is get yourself to hope. Feel the diff erence when you say to yourself, “oh I hope I can do this” instead of “this will never work”.
What you hope for, you will eventually believe. What you believe, you will eventually know. What you know, you will eventually cre-ate.What you create, you will eventually ex-perience.What you experience, you will eventually express. What you express, you will eventually be-come. (Th is is from the book Home with God
by Neale Donald Walsch)If you are at hope then move to belief.
Practice seeing yourself already doing it.It is really up to you. You can be, do and
have anything you want. You are blessed with the greatest creative power in the uni-verse and that is the power to think. Every thought you think over and over will become a belief. A belief is just a thought you have practiced over and over again. Whatever you think with passion and enthusiasm you will get more quickly. So if you are worrying, it is like praying for what you don’t want! Stop worrying! Stop doubting! Choose something else. Yes you can, just fi nd a way to do it. Use self control and don’t let your mind wander to doubt. If you practice doubt soon that doubt will manifest to be your reality. You are not the doubt-you are the doubter. Move to hope and feel the momentum begin to build in the positive direction.
Don’t try to get rid of the negative thought, just hold a positive one instead and the old thoughts will lose power because you are not giving them your attention. I would love to hear about your journey. You can contact me @ [email protected]
I hope I can! I know I can! I AM!Go for it!Celebrate your new journey! Blessings, Patti

When you think of things that run in the family, good customer service comes to mind when you are at Water Street Antiques & Interiors. While Holiday shopping I went into one of my favorite places to shop in Sutter Creek. Owner Christine O’Neill is always such a help in finding the perfect gift or decoration for my home. This day Christine was not in but Kevin O’Neill her son was working in the shop. What a pleasure he was, He had a knowledge of the products in the store and was more than happy to help me with my questions. His mother would be proud to know the professional way he does business when she is away. What a great place to shop I recommend it to every-one. If you don’t stop by, you’re really missing out.

I thought I had left Amador County and dropped into Italy. Nestled just off of Main St. in Sutter Creek with inside and outside seating. This was by far the best Pizza I have ever had. We had the Family Special which was an extra large Pizza, an order of Bread Sticks (which was really like a small cheese and garlic pizza) and 4 drinks. let me tell you, this pizza was loaded. 4 of us couldn’t finish what we ordered. This is an ongoing Special that they have. Where else can you go and feed your entire family out for $25.00. Most of the employees were teens they seemed to be working together and really enjoying their jobs. The Customer service was equally as good, as the food the service was fast and efficient. It’s worth the trip whether you live close by or not.

Lodi holds 16th Annual Parade of LightsWritten and photos by Paige Lampson
It was a magical night filled with thou-sands of lights as Lodi held its 16th Annual Parade of Lights, Thursday, December 1. While it was a tad chilly, the huge winds that had been blowing all day seemed to calm down just in time for the parade. Thou-sands of people came from all over Lodi and neighboring counties to enjoy the spectacle and brought chairs and blankets and warm clothes. 74 entries displayed all kinds of Christmas themes and lights in the annual parade that took over two hours from start to finish.
Councilwoman Joanne Mounce was the parade grand marshal and started off the parade in a magnificent white carriage be-
ing drawn by a Clydesdale. Onlookers were treated to all kinds of entries from semi-trucks, tree trimming trucks, golf carts, cars, marching groups, schools, clubs and equestrians. Since there is only one Santa, only one Santa was allowed in the whole pa-rade and he came at the end to usher in the beginning of the Christmas Season to the delight of all the children.
Jackie Bezley has been coming since the beginning.
“We come every year and are now bring-ing a second generation as we bring our grandchildren” says Bezley. “Its fun and the kids enjoy it and we look forward to it every year.”
The Tokay High Marching Band and football team win in the School Band category in The Parade of Lights.
Hundreds of Lodi Girl Scouts win first in the Walking Group Category as girls dress to rep-resent girl scouts from all over the world.
Tina Frazier and her daughters Shelby and Katie enjoy coming to the parade every year.
A royal Renaissance Christmas presented by Johnah Harper & Amy Pederson of Valley Springs. Riding a black Clydesdale and a rare English shire.
The Kiwanis Club of Greater Lodi and Key Club members from Tokay and McNair High Schools take first place in the Golf Cart Category.

Lodi Jr Flame cheerleaders are bright eyed as they wish the crowd “Merry Christmas”.

Th e program has been a success. Th e Calaveras Transit has partnered with the Santa’s Ex-press Committee and has had food drives at many of the local grocery stores in Calaveras County. Th e last “Stuff Th e Bus” appearance is scheduled to take place at Save Mart, 260 Main St., Angels Camp from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10. Paratransit Services and its drivers have volunteered their time and eff ort to help make the program a success, Hayward emphasized. Th e “Stuff Th e Bus” events have so far resulted $1,421 in monetary donations, 141 frozen turkeys and 6,165 pounds of non-perishable food have been donated through the program.
Hayward says volunteers are needed to pack the food. She says the food will be distributed Tuesday, Dec. 20 at three locations: Murphys Senior Center at the same parking lot as the Faith Lutheran Church, in West Point at the Blue Mountain Coalition for Youth and Families and in San Andreas at the Resource Connection Food Bank’s headquarters, 206 George Reed Drive.

e City of Galt was founded in 1969 when Dr. Obed Harvey was successful in getting the Central Paci c Railroad to lay track near his property. Rancher John McFarland was given the honor of naming the new city and named it a er a city in Canada, Galt, Ontario. Soon Front Street (now 4th Street) was the center of business as farmers brought their cattle and hogs to the stockyards located south of the railroad station, to be shipped to the east. Sacks of wheat and barley could be seen piled high waiting to be picked up for shipment to the local mills.
For years, Galt was the agricultural center of the Sacramento Val-ley. e Sacramento County Fair was even held for many years on what is now the Galt Market and Fairsite Elementary school grounds. Most of 4th street burned down in 1924 as the bucket brigade did it’s best, but was unsuccessful at putting out the re. Brewsters General Store was saved because there was an empty lot between it and the rest of the buildings. e empty lot is still there and has been turned into patio dining for the new Brewsters restaurant. ere are many charming businesses open in Old Town today including restaurants, beauty salons, bakeries, barbers, realtors, an antique store, grocery stores, a bakery, management companies and Estrellita ballroom which rents out for special events. Tanya Du y fell in love with the
building and opened Galt Beauty Supply and Salon. “I love vintage things” says Du y. “ is location is very visible and we have lots of room for all our services.”
With the help, advice and historic photos provided by e Galt Area Historical Society (GAHS) many of the buildings are being re-stored and new ones are being constructed to resemble that Galt so long ago.
Galt City Manager Jason Behmann shares some of the plans the city council is working towards. “We have some exciting plans” says Behmann. “ e City is looking to continue to change the entire Old Town by breathing new life into the area by adding entertainment op-tions, retail and additional restaurants. e City’s vision for this area is to create a unique entertainment, shopping and gathering place for the community that capitalizes on the great history and charm of Old Town Galt. We want to make this the heart and soul of our community again and create a sense of place. Before the State froze redevelopment agencies, we were in the process of acquiring nearly a dozen properties for future projects. We hope to get this process back on track a er the rst of the year a er the lawsuit pending before the California Supreme Court between the State of California and the Californian Redevelopment Association is resolved.” Be sure to visit Old Town Galt when you come into town. Just take the “C’” street or Central Galt exit and stop when you get to the railroad tracks.

e City of Galt has been lighting this tree for years, but this year is special be-cause it is the Inaugural Tree of Lights sponsored by Hospice of San Joaquin. Community members have the opportuni-ty purchase a light in memory or in honor of a loved one who holds a special place in their hearts. Proceeds will bene t Hospice of San Joaquin and anyone interested can
still make a donation for as little as ve dollars. e crowd was treated to lots of Christmas music from Galt Bible Church Choir, Galt Christian School Chime Choir and the talented Adin Selby. e family of Diane Gragg, who was serviced by Hospice before she died, was given the honor of throwing the switch and lighting the tree.
Galt Finance Director Inez Kiriu coor-dinated with Hospice to bring Galt the Tree of Lights.
“Hospice has been so successful in other cities and it just seemed like a natural tran-sition for Galt” says Kiriu. “In addition to the Galt community, we wanted to reach out and include other groups. I was thrilled at the support of the community and of the tree. is turn out seems unprecedented. I think there was a lot of support for Hospice here tonight.”

Kaehler Dairy put thousands of lights on their oat at the Lighting of the Night Parade.

The family of Diane Gragg, daughters Diana and Jody and grandchildren Andre, Codey, Katie, Nicholi and Vanessa are honored to light Galt’s Inaugural Tree of Lights.
The City Tots kicked o Galt’s evening tree lighting and Lighting of the Night Parade with a few Christmas songs.
Mikey Brixey, 3 can hardly contain his Christmas Spirit as he performs with the City Tots in Galt.
Galt’s rst Hospice Tree of Lights rises high over the crowd preparing to watch the parade.

Q: I loved seeing a different side of Bill Pull-man in “Torchwood: Miracle Day.” Where
else can I see him? -- Betty T., via e-mail
A: Bill is headlining TNT’s Mystery Movie Night by starring in “Scott Turow’s In-
nocent,” which is the sequel to “Presumed In-nocent,” picking up the lives of Rusty and Bar-bra Sabich two decades later. The movie opens with Rusty being accused of murdering his wife, mirroring the accusation he was cleared of years before with his mistress.
You can catch your favorite stars this winter in crime-novel adaptations of books by authors like Scott Turow, Mary Higgins Clark, Sandra Brown and more. While Bill himself is not a big television watcher, he loves the artistic oppor-tunities it presents to actor and viewers, telling me: “I like the image of people on their sofas on a winter night just getting down with a good, compelling thriller. Makes me want to watch more television.” Check your local listings for the date and time of each movie’s airing during TNT’s Mystery Movie Night series. And stop by celebrityextraonline.com for my entire inter-view with Bill.

Q: What is the lovely Annabeth Gish up to lately? I loved her on “The X-Files.” -- Ga-
brielle V., Portland, Ore.
A: Annabeth is starring alongside Pierce Brosnan in A&E’s miniseries “Bag of
Bones,” which is based on the Stephen King novel. In the miniseries, best-selling novelist Mike Noonan (Pierce) can’t stop grieving after the death of his wife, Jo (Annabeth). A dream inspires him to return to the couple’s lakeside retreat in western Maine. Of course, mysterious things are going to happen. Go to celebrityex-traonline.com to read my full interview with Annabeth about her role in this series, which premieres Dec. 12 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
Q: I was reading that Universal is going to pull the “Harry Potter” movies from the shelves
soon. Is this true? -- Andrew R., via e-mail
A: On Dec. 29, Universal is indeed pulling “Harry Potter” movies from the shelves --
right after the Christmas rush -- and offer them only on a sporadic basis, like Disney has done with its animated classics. If you can, I’d hold off on buying the eight-disc boxed set featuring years one through seven. It contains only the movie discs with no special features or extras. At the end of 2012, Universal plans to release a more comprehensive boxed set of all eight mov-ies, with the extras and special treats we’ve all been waiting for.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Cowboys and Aliens” (PG-13) -- When an amnesiac stranger (Daniel Craig) rolls into a Wild West town, he gets rough treatment from the local boss (Harrison Ford). What the townsfolk don’t know is that they’re unwit-tingly setting the stage for a reluctant alliance with the stranger against a common enemy. The movie just can’t seem to make up its mind between grimacing action flick and an adven-ture that knows just how ridiculous it is. In-deed, there are cowboys and aliens, but such a title also sets high expectations for other things -- like gags, gunfights and silliness. This gunslinger gets so caught up in a cowboy tough-guy routine that it just misses the target that matters: fun.
“The Hangover Part II” (R) -- When “The Hangover” came out, fans loved the original comedy. The jokes were fresh, the comedy tal-ent wasn’t the same overexposed clowns, and played-out themes of bromance were rekin-dled with in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way. Fans demanded more of the film’s stars and
more original comedy, so Hollywood made the same movie again. This time, the guys are in Thailand, and again they find themselves hung over, confused and missing an important member of a wedding party. Not to worry, though, the last film maps out where to go and what to expect. It feels like there are fewer jokes and more moments of the guys just being really upset over the whole thing. I don’t know if this makes the film darker, but it doesn’t make it any funnier.
“Mr. Popper’s Penguins” (PG) -- In this fam-ily comedy, Jim Carrey plays a driven, ruthless New York businessman who is separated from his family. Clearly, somebody is in need of a crew of computer-animated critters to turn his world upside down and show him what is really important. The film boasts that it was shot with real penguins, but most of the adorable antics are products of animation -- you can expect only so much out of the little guys, after all. The kids won’t remember this one. Whatever it was that made the book so lovable has been substituted with a mild solution of computer hijinks and Carrey’s physical comedy.
“The Help” (PG-13) -- This film about issues of race, class, gender, respect and friendship has been kicking up critical acclaim from the start. Set in the 1960s in Mississippi, Skeeter (Emma Stone) is a young reporter who forms a connection with Aibileen (Viola Davis) and takes an interest in the lives of the black housekeepers employed by the ladies of high-society.
