John Kennedy Left a Good Record

Recalling that he started work-ing on a farm for $5 a month, thenjumped to the fabulous wage of$180 a day driving team In theold roast yard at Victoria Mine In1912, John Kennedy said, however,that good fortune really came afterhe hired on at the Copper Cliffmill. From there the Murray mine washis next stop on the way to Espa-nola, where he worked from 1921until the mifi closed.

During construction of the Cop-per Refinery he worked for FraserBrace, then decided to settle downwith Inco and get a job at theCopper Cliff mill in 1931. He wasa flotation boss there for manyyears. "Jim Parlee was the bestman I ever worked for, anywhere,"John volunteered.

Born at Eganville in 1894, hemarried Jenny Gareau in 1924. Oftheir family, Earl works at Creigh-ton, and William at Falconbridge;Evelyn-Rae Is married to Len Hir-vela of Murray mine and Margaretis Mrs. J. Casey of Montreal. Todate they have two grandchildren.

Residents of the Gatchell for 23years, the Kennedys have a com-fortable home complete with largegarden, and a wide circle of goodfriends.

Ten postgraduate fellowshipshave been awarded to Canadianstudents by the InternationalNickel Company as part of its$2,860,000 five-year program to aidhigher education in Canada it wasannounced recently.

Recipients of fellowships whichhave been renewed are Charles E.Beaulieu, Amqui Quebec, attendingLaval University; AIflo Corsini,Hamilton, Ontario, attendingMcMaster University; K. 0. Davis,Vancouver, B.C.., attending Uni-versity of British Columbia; RayLaakso, Timmins, Ont., attendingQueen's University, and John M.Patterson, Winnipeg, Man., attend-ing University of Manitoba.

New fellowships this year wereawarded to: E. P. Jones, Trail, B.C.,attending University of BritishColumbia; F. P. Gagnon, Quebec,Que., attending University of Mont-real; V. S. Papezik, Montreal, Que.,attending McGffl University; JamesH. P. Watson, Toronto, attendingUniversity of Toronto, and LeonardP. Sampson, West Vancouver, B.C.,attending University of Alberta.

The ten students are completingadvanced studies in a wide range ofsubjects, Including metallurgy,analytical chemistry, geology, phy-sics, mathematics and educationaladministration.

Inco's contribution to the field ofpostgraduate studies, the fellow-ships have a maximum tenure ofthree years, wifi provide an annualstipend of $2,000 and include anannual supporting grant of $500 tothe university. Since the programwas inaugurated in 1951, 37 fellow-ships have been awarded.

Inco's overall educational pro-gram has two major phases. Thethst Is concerned with the dJ.stribu-tion of approximately $2,000,000 inunrestricted grants to 146 Canadianuniversities and liberal arts collegesover a five-year period ending in1960-61 for use in strengtheningand expanding their educationalprograms.

The second phase covers a five-year commitment of approximately$860,000 for scholarships, fellow-ships and special projects.

In addition to the fellowships, 115four-year scholarships have beenestablished since 1956 for outstand-ing graduates of high schools andpreparatory schools. Twenty-fivenew scholarships are awarded an-nually and of that total 18 are ie-served for studies in the fields ofgeology, geophysics, mining, metal-lurgy, engineering, mathematicsand physics. The remaining sevenawards are reserved for children ofCompany employees, and permitfree choice of field of study.

Inco also sponsors grants whichenable high school teachers ofscience to take advanced or supple-mentary studies. Some 800 tea-chers have taken part in specialcourses since 1956, with Inco pro-viding grants totalling $120,000.

To be one's self and unafraidwhether right or wrong, is moreadmirable than the easy cowardiceof surrender to conformity.

Remote and automatic control has been accomplished to a high degree in the new Levack mill.Here's the elaborate panel for recording and controlling what goes on in the grinding section, frommill feed to pulp density. An alarm Is given when trouble occurs at any point in the circuit.

These five Dorr vacuum filters, four on nickel andconcentrates. The nickel filters are larger, 16 feetapproximately 800 tons in a 24-hour period. The-automatically controlled.

Shown above Is one of the three 60-foot Dorr tray thickeners in which the nickel concentrate Isdewatered after flotation. A rotating rake slowly moves the thickened material to a discharge inthe centre of the tray, at which point it is 18 feet deep. The copper concentrate Is also thickened.

Official opening of the firstschool at Thompson in time for thecommencement of the fall termpointed up the very substantialprogress that has been made inestablishing this brand new com-munity alongside Inco's hugenickel project in northern Mani-toba.

Development of the town con-tinues to be pressed forward withall possible speed, both by the Com-pany, which is furnishing the com-plete basic municipal facilities ata cost of $8,500 000, and by privateinterests which are investing in theresidential, business and industrialsections.

Optimism and enthusiasm are ata high level among the town's firstresidents, who take an almostpersonal pride in each new sign ofprogress. In the southern part ofthe province Thompson is rapidlybecoming almost as well known forits community spirit as for its im-portance as the site of the world'ssecond largest nickel plant.

Some 250 houses have now beenbuilt or are under construction.Ten duplexes and 10 seven-suiteapartments are also underway.

The handsome new CanadianNational Railways station is almostcompleted, as is the freight shed.

The hotel to be known as theThompson Inn will be openedearly In November. Initially ithas 38 rooms with accommodationfor a total of 64 guests, as well asan attractive lobby, large diningroom, lunch counter and lounges.

The Hudson's Bay Co. will makethe excavation this winter for atwo-storey extension to its presentlarge retail store, which has beenin operation since last spring.

Foundation walls are being builtfor the movie 700-seat theatrewhich will also include eight bowl-ing alleys and a billiard room. Thetheatre is being built by a sub-sidiary of Famous Players.

Foundations will be started thiswinter for the shopping plaza to

be developed by Capital HoldingsLtd. The architectural work isnearing completion on this majorproject, and soil tests are nowbeing made. A complete directoryof business services for a moderncommunity will be represented inthe plaza, which has been designedfor construction in stages to meetthe needs of the town as it ex-pands.

Three banks. Toronto-Dominion,Montreal and Royal, are at presentoperating from temporary quartersand have made plans to establishpermanent offices in the town.

There has been keen interestshown by most denominational

church groups in Canada in estab-lishing facilities in Thompson.

A temporary curling rink withtwo sheets of ice will be in opera-tion this winter.

There ai'e nine miles of i'oadswithin the town either completedor under construction. It is esti-mated that town roads, curbs andsidewalks will cost Inco $980,000. Astart was made on sidewalk con-struction before the cold weatherset in.

it is expected that the stainlesssteel curtain walls of the townadministration building will behung by the end of November. Thisbuilding and the water treatment

and sewage disposal plants, arepart of the Company's contribu-tion to the town, The water treat-ment plant is completed. Thesewage disposal plant will be inoperation by the end of the year.

Two-thirds of the townsite'swater and sewer lines have beeninstalled. This system, along withother utilities, has been designedwith future demands in mind.

Midwest Diamond Drilling Co.have an impressive office, ware-house and shop building. TheMonai'ch Lumber Co.'s office andwarehouse is almost completed, anda good start has been made on asimilar establishment for BeaverLumber. The steel has been erectedfor the Cochrane-Dunlop Hard-ware warehouse.

Five oil companies have openedwarehouses in the town's indus-trial section.

The steel is up and the brickwalls of the Manitoba TelephoneSystem's permanent exchangebuilding are under construction.Work is also well along on thecombined garage, warehouse andoffice of the Manitoba Hydro-Electric Board.

Excellent progress has been madeon installation of the power distri-bution system in the town for theManitoba Power Commission.

Forty miles of the right-of-wayfor a highway south from Thomp-son has been cleared, and workhas commenced on the first con-tract for the grading of this high-way, to connect with provincialtrunk highway No. 10. It is ex-pected that within two or threeyears Thompson will be connectedby road to southern Manitoba.

the highway will pass near PaintLake and Ospwagan Lake, well-known in the area for fishing,beaches, and scenic beauty. Hunt-ing is also said to be particularlygood in this territory.

Fifty-three miles to the south-east of Thompson, construction ofthe Manitoba Hydro-ElectricBoard's Kelsey generating stationon the Nelson River is proceedinglight Ofl schedule. First powerfrom this mighty plant will bedelivered to Inco next May. Capa-city of the station Will be 210,000horsepower from five units, withprovision for expansion.

Power will be transmitted fromKelsey to Thompson on a doublecircuit transmission line mountedon steel towers. The station willbe operated by remote control fromThompson, although a duplicatecontrol system will permit opera-tion at the site.

The power station is named afterHenry Kelsey, the first white manto explore the northern section ofManitoba, who ti'avelled the areain the years 1690-1692.

In addition to its importance insubstantially increasing the freeworld's supply of nickel, Inco'sThompson project is considered ofspecial significance to Manitobaand to Canada in opening up agreat new frontier.

The influence of the Inco projectwill undoubtedly be felt in theyears to come throughout the 150,-000 square miles of northern Mani-toba which up to now has beenaimost entirely without industrialproduction.

The increased population andestablishment of local governmentin the Thompson area, the avail-ability of ample power from Kelsey,and the natural resources to bedeveloped are a few of the Un-mediate advantages that mightattract other industries.

It is thought likely, too, thatmany who have passed throughThompson, or have taken part inits construction, will be inspiredby the opportunities for industrialdevelopment that exist in northernManitoba, and convey their ideasto those who can make themrealities.

In the meantime fast-growingThompson is keeping its date withdestiny.

In 1923 Steve married MaryPakaluk and they have one daugh-ter Olga whose husband, JulianKulson, works at Stobie. They havea small farm at Verner and Stevespends a good deal of time therehelping out with chores and en-joying his three grandchildren.

A little gardening at home, keep-ing his wood cut, visiting oldcronies and taking life easy makesfor pleasant retirement days forthis long-time Coniston employeeand resident.

Small of stature but not of mind,and gifted with quiet good natureand a puckish sense of humor,George has always been popularwith his workrnates, as well asholding their respect.

Born in Michigan in 1894, hegraduated from Houghton Schoolof Mines in 1916. After a wideswing through mining camps inMichigan, Quebec, Colorado andOntario he returned home in 1918.

His Ontario sojourn was a 10-month stint at Garson, which wasa half-day $5 trip from Sudbury byhired livery rig in those times,George recalled.

For the next several years heworked at the Mesabi and C'uyunairon ranges in Michigan and aschief engineer at the latter had, atone time, eight mines and pitsunder his charge. It was here hegained much of his early open pitmining know-how.

Later he set up as a consultingengineer but chose a bad time tostart - 1928.

That same year he returned toOntario and joined the Inco mineengineering staff at Copper Cliff.Harold Keast was in charge of thedepartment then. After almost 10years there, the latter part spentIn plotting and planning the futureFrood-Stobie open pits, he wentout to the scene of operations andwith a gang of men started clearingthe site. From then until his re-tirement this year George was ad-dicted to two things, his pipe andthe Pit, and was never very farfrom either. Of late years he tookLawson Quarry under his wing andgave that operation the benefit ofhis long engineering experience.

It was at Duluth in 1919 that acertain charming Miss GladysHolmes consented to become Mrs.George Holmes. Their two daugh-ters are Beth, wife of Levack per-sonnel officer Bob Wotton, andFrances, Mrs. B. Drulak of Trenton.Their four grandchildren are allboys.

With a new home on GilmanAvenue to remodel and repair,George has been rather busy thepast few months though never toobusy to reminisce for a couple ofhours, given the opportunity andright company.

A contented man is GeorgeHolmes who in retirement has ahost of friends and countless happymemories.

WHERE IS HE NOW?We're still worried about the

reporter who wrote: "The deceasedwas the father of five sons. Fourof them are respected citizens ofVancouver and the fifth lives inOntario."

Part of the equipment installed to date in the machine shop at Thompsonincludes the three lathes shown above. The 28-inch lathe in the fore-ground has a tracer attachment for following a template In repetitivemachining operations. Among the other installations in the machineshop will be a 48-inch lathe, a large boring mill, wheel press, 8-footradial drill, 72-inch shaper, and various saws. The plate, welding andblacksmith shop, the electrical shop, and the carpenter shop will alsohave the most modern equipment available.

There are two grinding units,each consisting of a 15-foot rodmill, a 14-foot ball mill, and twocone classifiers of which one is aspare. Mill discharge is whirledaround Inside the cone classifier,and the centrifugal action forcesthe coarser material to the outsidewhere It spirals down to the bottomoutlet and returns to the mills forfurther grinding. The finer ma-terial is drawn to the centre andoverflows at the top of the cone,ready for the flotation process.

A nickel concentrate and a cop-per concentrate are produced byselective flotation, this section hav-ing 90 Denver cells and 60 Fager-gren flotation cells.

for shipment to the smelters atCopper Cliff and Coniston.

Mill tailings are pumped to thesand plant 1,500 feet distant, forthe production of sand fill for themine. Primary and secondarycones and centrifuges are used inthis section to recover a maximumamount of the plus-800-mesh ma-terial from the tailings for fill. Theminus-BOO-mesh slimes are de-watered In two 100-foot Dorr thick-eners and pumped to the tailingdisposal area.

The mill is brightly lighted andattractively decorated. Color codeswere followed in painting processlines and safety installations.

In designing the plant, full ad-vantage was taken of the mostrecent developments In the field ofInstrumentation to equip the millfor centralized control and, wherefeasible, automatic control of theprocess.

Automatic and remote control ofthe operations begins in the crush-ing section. The crushing processIs controlled from a central panelon the Rod-deck screen floor. Theore hoisted in No. 2 shalt is con-veyed to the mill crushing plantand distributed in the coarse orebin by an automatically operatedtwo-way distributor. The stoppingof the distributor, or a high levelof ore in the bin, sounds an alarmon the control panel and gives avisual indication of the trouble.

The crushers, crusher oil pumps,screens, feed conveyors, and vari-able speed ore feeders are alloperated and controlled from thecentral panel, lights Indicatingwhat equipment is in service.

An indicating and recordingweightometer on the panel showsthe crushing section throughput.Oil temperature recorders are pro-vided for the crushers, and hightemperatures or low oil pressuressound an alarm and give a visualindication of the condition.

At the chip screen a blockage ofthe ore chute automatically shutsdown the section and gives a signalat the panel showing the trouble.

In the grinding circuit an im-posing central panel located be-tween the two grinding units con-trols the whole operation. All orefeeders, feeder conveyors, con-veyors, grinding mills, and mill oil

In the sand plant where Levack mill tailings are used to make fill foruse in the mine, there are two of these storage tanks, 70 feet high, toensure an adequate supply of sand fill ahead of the mine requirements.The fill is drawn off from the bottom of the tanks through 6-inch valves,and is piped directly down No. 1 shaft into the mine.

Six classifying cones are used in the production of sand fill from Levackmiil tailings, and shown above is the cluster of valves controlling thecones. The gauge registers the pressure in the manifold.

In this closeup nickel concentrate is shown as it leaves one of thevacuum filters, dewatered and ready for shipment to either CopperCliff or Coniston smeller. Thirty or more railroad cars of nickel andcopper concentrates are shipped each working day from the newLevack mill.

Weightometers automatically re-cord and control the rate of feedto the grinding units. Water ad-ditions to the rod mills are con-trolled from the panel, and therate of flow Is shown by watermeters.

The density of the classifier over-flow Is measured by radio-activeIsotopes and indicated on a record-ing Instrument which in turn con-trols the density by regulating thewater additions to the classifier.

Kilowatt-hour meters Indicatethe horsepower being drawn byeach grinding mIU. The amount ofmill lubricating oil in the headtank and storage tank Is shownon oil level guages. The level ofwater in the return water sump isindicated on a recorder which inturn automatically maintains thelevel by controlling the fresh wateradditions to the sump.

An alarm system, both audibleand visual, Is activated by failureof the oil or water pressures andby high temperatures in the mIUbearings.

In the flotation section aLso acentral operating panel provides fora measure of control over thevariables in the process. Thetemperature of the circuit Is re-corded and maintained by auto-matic adjustment of the steamsupply.

Can I carry a shotgun and a low-powered rifle at the same time tohunt partridge?

Yes, if you are in possession ofthe one dollar hunting Ucence.Under the Game and Fisheries Act,there are no restrictions on thenumber of thearms that you maycarry, but such is not the caseunder the Migratory Birds Conven-tion Act. While hunting a migra-tory game bird, no person shallhave with him for his own usemore than one shotgun and notlarger than No. 10 gauge.

Other loadshave spaces left at set intervals sothe fork-lift may simply pick up alift and place it on either truck orpile. In boxcar unloading much ofthe timber has to be piled by handin pallets in the doorway for thefork-lift to remove.

Standard equipment for timberhandling is a set of forks. Eachtruck is also equipped with a 1-yard sUp-on bucket for handlingmaterial such as sand and gravel,and also a 4-yard snow and saw-dust slip-on bucket.

"The United States SteelCorporation produced the pictureafter a great deal of research, andthey have done a wonderful job,"he said. two years oldand his familyhad just movedfrom Ottawa toVictoria Minewhere his fa-ther workeduntil 1913.

Sandy has lived in Copper Clifffor 30 years. He married Berna-dette Hamilton there in 1929. TheIrfamily Include an adopted son, DonMcNabb of Copper Cliff, R.edversof the Copper Refinery, Robert ofSudbury, and Gayle and Ricky athome. Six active grandchildrencomplete the happy roster.

In fine health Sandy is planningon getting a small business to oper-ate, something that won't tie himdown too much, since he has everyintention of enjoying his pension.

After a couple of pretty leanyears at farming in Quebec, Andyagain took the advice of his mentorJohn Weir and came on to CopperCliff. Starting in 1929 he workedalmost all of his Inco career on

the coiivert'rs, For the last 10years he was valued member ofsupervision. Curling was his sport.

Born near Glasgow in 1903, Andyworked in coal mines from the timehe was 13 years of age until heleft for Canada. He made a tripback to Scotland in 1954 and maygo again next year.

However, n a handsome newhome, built with real assistancefrom his five sons-in-law, and with75 acres of bush and farm to workwhen he gets the urge, Andy isquite content to stay put. Andthere's excellent hunting and fish-ing right in his own back yard!

charge. He worked in the steamplant of a colliery until coming toCanada In 1928.

Arriving in Sudbury he hired onas a pipefitter at Frood No. 3 shaft,and remained there as pipeman,powderman and fireguard until1950. The last nine years he workedat Stobie as a steel sharpener.

The Browns have lived in thesame house in the "Little Britain"section of Sudbury since their ar-rival. "We were the first house onthe hill here," Bob said. A veryfine garden sets off their comfort-able home. Their son Ken Is inOwen Sound, and their daughterBetty Is Mrs. H. Hickey of Toronto.Seven grandchildren give Bob andMrs. Brown a lot of pleasure, andso does relaxing, making minorrepairs on his home and planningnext year's trip back to the oldcountry.

Married 57 Years

Mr. and Mrs, 0. A. Chisholm ofPort Arthur this year celebratedtheir 57th wedding anniversary.Formerly an employee at Conitonsmelter, Mr. Chisholm has been anInco pensioner since 1936. They areboth 88 years of age. Their oldfriends and acquaintances in theSudbury district will be pleased tolearn of their good health andhappiness.

The best crops In Rayside township 4H Potato Club's annual competitionwere grown by Roger Trottier, Ronald Methe, and Rejean Couture.The three young Chelmsford farmers are shown above with one of thecontest judges, C. A. Young of the Inco agricultural department. Prizesfor the club's achievement day are donated jointly by Inco and theprovincial and federal departments of agriculture. Nineteen of the 21members entered exhibits of potatoes. They were entertained at dinnerand a theatre party by the Sudbury Rotary Club.

It was the ninth annual ladies' night of Copper Cliff Branch of the Canadian Legion, but the first in theirhandsome new building, so it was a very special occasion indeed. Cabaret tables were set up in both thebi auditorium and the cosy members' lounge down3ta1r, where more than 200 enjoyed dancing to RickyLainoureux's orchestra.
