CAREERS: The Next Generation Loraine Anderton Award of Excellence in Health Services Loraine Anderton - Biography

Loraine’s commitment to education and learning, and helping individuals find their fit in the working world, has been at the foundation of her own education and professional career. These principles made her a natural fit and supporter of CAREERS: The Next Generation.

Her education focused on human resources, including an Administrative Management Diploma from NAIT, a Personnel Administration Certificate from University of Alberta, and a Bachelor of Administration Degree from Athabasca University.

Loraine has taught in the post-secondary sector through the Department of Extension/Business Administration at both NAIT and Keyano College, sharing her knowledge and passion for the field of Human Resources.

Throughout her career she worked in various Human Resources capacities in both the private and public sector, including 14 years with the Northern Lights Health Region, serving as their Director and later Vice-President of Human Resources.

As co-Chair of the Health Regions’ Provincial Human Resource Leaders Steering Committee, Loraine recognized the opportunity for the development of a Health Careers Steam in the CAREERS: The Next Generation (CAREERS) portfolio of offered programs. The model envisioned involved health regions sponsoring placement for interested youth considering health careers. The Health Regions enthusiastically endorsed this concept, recognizing the value of mentored health internships in helping youth explore their future career paths in a meaningful way.

Loraine chaired the Health Regions’ Steering Committee that worked with CAREERS in development of the Health Careers Stream. CAREERS and the Health Regions then worked to secure the funding to ensure that this vision became a reality.

Since that time, countless youth have explored careers in health, supported by their dedicated mentors. Many of those interns have gone on to enjoy rewarding health careers.

CAREERS: The Next Generation comments at Celebration of Excellence:

“Loraine Anderton is an experienced human resources professional in the health sector. In her role as co-Chair of the Health Regions’ Provincial Human Resources Leaders Steering Committee, Loraine chaired the committee that worked with CAREERS to craft what is now our Health Services Youth Initiative. It is impossible to overstate the importance of her contributions in forming CAREERS’ Health Services program portfolio. It is in her honor that we award two outstanding mentors and two dedicated interns in the health services.”
