the Lord is gracious and merciful.

Mary Jane Seanor

“People Need the Lord”

UMH #466

Come, my Light, and illumine my darkness.

Come, my Life, and revive me from death.

Come, my Physician, and heal my wounds.

Come, Flame of divine love, and burn up the thorns of my sins,

kindling my heart with the flame of thy love.

Come, my King, sit upon the throne of my heart and reign there.

For thou alone art my King and my Lord.

Amen.

Psalm 111

Praise the Lord!

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,

in the company of the upright, in the congregation.

Great are the works of the Lord,

studied by all who delight in them.

Full of honor and majesty is his work,

and his righteousness endures for ever.

He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds;

the Lord is gracious and merciful.

He provides food for those who fear him;

he is ever mindful of his covenant.

He has shown his people the power of his works,

in giving them the heritage of the nations.

The works of his hands are faithful and just;

all his precepts are trustworthy.

They are established for ever and ever,

to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.

He sent redemption to his people;

he has commanded his covenant for ever.

Holy and awesome is his name.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;

all those who practice it have a good understanding.

His praise endures for ever.

Pastoral Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us,

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

As we recall our Lord present with us, we give our thanksgivings of

hearts and resources, to God’s glory. Here are the ways you can

financially support our church if you are able:

“Meditation on ‘Martyrdom’”

Prayer of Thanksgiving

God of unending grace, we give you thanks again for all that you have

given us. We take this time to gladly and freely return these and all gifts

into your hands. Guide this church and guide its leaders that You might

use these gifts to bring about your kingdom in our church, in our

community, and in our world. Amen.

Mark 1:21–28

They went to Capernaum;

and when the sabbath came,

he entered the synagogue and

taught. They were astounded

at his teaching, for he taught

them as one having authority,

and not as the scribes.

Just then there was in their

synagogue a man with an

unclean spirit, and he cried

out, “What have you to do

with us, Jesus of Nazareth?

Have you come to destroy us?

I know who you are,

the Holy One of God.’

But Jesus rebuked him, saying,

“Be silent, and come out of

him!” And the unclean spirit,

throwing him into convulsions

and crying with a loud voice,

came out of him. They were all

amazed, and they kept on asking

one another, “What is this? A

new teaching—with authority!

He commands even the unclean spirits, and they

obey him.” At once his fame began to spread

throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

Pastor Matthew Tate

UMH 882

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,

is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Amen.

Tomorrow (Monday) morning, Wade will send an all-church email

with a link to RSVP for NEXT Sunday’s In-Person Worship Service!

We are limiting our In-Person Worship Services to 18 “families” per

service. Please, only one person per household should register.

When you register, the first screen should give you a list of

checkboxes for your immediate family. PLEASE DO NOT check

any of those boxes except the one by your name. THEN click ADD

MEMO (or whatever the exact words are) and in that field you can

list the names of people who will be sitting with you in the pew.

If you need help accessing Realm, click here to email the church office.

In the event of a severe snowstorm or other winter weather, a notice will be

sent via our Facebook page, Realm, and an all-church email if in-person

worship will be canceled. Do not call the church as there will be

no one available to answer the call. One of the great benefits

of streaming technology is that Pastor Matthew will be able

to share that morning’s sermon from home

on our YouTube channel!

The schedule keeps changing! FREE MEALS for

breakfast, lunch, and dinner for school days are

available from SMCPS for children 18 & under. Check

with SMCPS for the current schedule. Meals are distributed on Monday,

Wednesday, and Friday from 11:00 AM–1:00 PM. Meals can be picked up

from any school site even if your student attends a different school. Meal bags

include breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack; plus, milk and/or water for each

student. On Friday, January 29, all schools will be closed; meal distribution

on Wednesday, January 27, will include food for three days (Wed—Thurs—

Fri). Beginning February 5, Friday’s meal bag will include food for three days

(Fri—Sat—Sun). The meal distribution schedule for Fridays will continue until

a plan has been established for students to return to in-school instruction.

Join Pastor Matthew on a new Lenten Study of Adam Hamilton’s

book CREED. You’ll have two choices each week: during Lunch

Bunch on Wednesdays at noon and on Wednesday evenings at 6:30.

The evening session will be available in person and on Zoom!

Get your copy—and support HUMC with your purchase—by

Then click here to email Pastor Matthew to let him know you’ve

ordered the book and are planning to participate, and include Lunch

Bunch or evening session.

As it was for many in many ways, 2020 was a challenging year for our

church finances, but a challenge we were able to meet in many ways. For the

year 2020, we had a church budget around $344,000. In the beginning of the

pandemic, understanding the changes ahead, the leadership was able to

implement various financial controls to faithfully continue the mission of

the church in the face of great uncertainty. So while our income at the end

of the year did not meet the budget we had expected, our spending was also

less. While we qualified for the Paycheck Protection Program (and did

consider it), our leadership believed the faithful act was to not apply and

leave the funds for other organization that were more in need. As the year

progressed, the generous support of 30–40 of our members continued to

show us that we made the right decision. Thank you so much for your

generous support, especially in the midst of a pandemic!!

At the end of November, our spending and income were equal, and the

incredible generosity of some of our members in December left us closing

the books on 2020 having received more than we spent! We do not take your

generosity for granted. With this surplus in mind, the leadership has made

the decision to begin supporting other local organizations that are doing

incredible work feeding the hungry. After all, the one miracle story that

appears in all four Gospels is the multiplying of the loave and fishes. This

work begins with HOPE of Southern Maryland and Feed St. Mary’s each

receiving $3,000 checks to help them continue their ministry. We pray that

the Lord will do with our gifts what he did with those loaves and fishes.

This pandemic has brought about many challenges and moments of

uncertainty, but the Church has always thrived during times of adversity.

Thanks to your financial support and personal time given to HUMC, we

continue to be able to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation

of the world by knowing Jesus and making Jesus known. We may not know

what 2021 has in store for us, but we walk by faith every step of the way.

May God watch over all of us in the year to come.
