Forbestperformance,youshouldhaveacomputerwithatleast1GBofRAM,a2GHzprocessor,and128MBofvideoRAM.

InstallationMacintoshToinstallThe Lord is My ShepherdonaMacintosh,inserttheCDinthedrive.Double-clicktheinstallericontobegintheprocess.TheinstallerplacesalltheLord is My ShepherdfilesinsidetheBranchoftheVinefolderinyourApplicationsfolder.ItwillcreateaBranchoftheVinefolderifnoneexists,anditwillcreateanaliasonyourdesktop.YoucandragthealiastoyourDockifyouprefer.

WindowsToinstallThe Lord is My ShepherdonWindows,inserttheCDinthedrive.Theinstallershouldstartautomatically.Ifyouhaveturnedofftheauto-startfeature,double-clickthesetup.exeicontobegintheprocess.TheinstallerplacesalltheLord is My ShepherdfilesinsidetheBranchoftheVinefolderinyourProgramFilesfolder.ItwillcreateaBranchoftheVinefolderifnoneexists,anditwilladdtheLord is My ShepherdprogramsandtheUser’sGuidetoyourStartmenu.

What’s on the CDInadditiontotheLord is My Shepherdprogram,theinstallerplacesthisuser’sguideandastorybookintheLord is My Shepherdfolder.Thisuser’sguidecontainsallyouneedtoknowtooperatetheprogram.

Thestorybookisafull-colorcompanionbookinPDFformattousewiththeprogram.

Youcanprinteithertheuser’sguideorthestorybookwithAdobeReader.

Running the ProgramMacintoshTolaunchThe Lord is My Shepherd,double-clicktheLord is My Shepherdicononyourdesktop,orclicktheiconinyourDock.Ifyouhavedeletedthealias,orifyou’relaunchingtheprogramfromadifferentuseraccount,openyourApplicationsfolder,thentheBranchoftheVinefolder,thentheLord is My Shepherdfolder.Doubleclicktheicontostarttheprogram.

WindowsTolaunchThe Lord is My Shepherd,selectitfromtheBranchoftheVinefolderintheStartmenu.Ifyouhavedeletedthisshortcut,openyourProgramFilesfolder,thentheBranchoftheVinefolder,thentheLord is My Shepherdfolder.Doubleclicktheicontostarttheprogram.

The Main MenuAfterashortintroduction,the Lord is My Shepherdmainmenuscreenwillappear.Themainmenuisthecommandcenteroftheprogram.

Youcanreturntothemainmenuscreenfromanyotheractivitybypressingthe“ESC”key.YoucanpressESCagaintoshoworhidethemenubarandrevealalltheprogramshortcuts.

Click“ReadtheStory”fromthemainmenuortype(Mac:⌘-RorWin:Ctrl+R)atanytimetobeginreadingthestory.Click“PlaytheSong”ortype(Mac:⌘-PorWin:Ctrl+P)tolistentotheoriginalsongbyBillDowney.

Clickonthe“Settings”icontobringuptheSettingsdialog.YoucanalsobringuptheSettingsdialogatanytimeduringtheprogrambytyping(Mac:⌘-KorWin:Ctrl+K).SeeSettingsonpage8foracompletedescriptionoftheprogramsettings.

Clickthe“Quit”icontoquitThe Lord is My Shepherd.YoucanalsoquittheprogramatanytimebychoosingQuitfromthemenubar,orbytyping(Mac:⌘-QorWin:Ctrl+Q).OnWindows,youcanalsoquittheprogramusingthestandardAlt+F4.

Read the StoryTheLordisMyShepherdstoryisdesignedforusersofallabilities.Thedefaultmodeisacauseandeffectmode,whereanykeypress,mouseclickorswitchhitwilladvancetheprogram.Oneachpage,thetextisfirstreadaloud,thenapromptliketheoneshownbelowindicatesthattheswitchshouldbepressed.

Eachpageofthestorycontainsabriefanimation.Thefirstswitchhitonapageplaystheanimation.Thesecondswitchhitturnsthepage.

Inthedirectselectionmode,leftandrightarrowsonthebottomofthescreenallowtheusertoadvanceorgobackattheirchoosingbyclickingthearrowwithamouseortouchscreen.Clickingonthetextcausesthesentencetobereadagain.

Aftertheanimationisplayed,a“repeat”arrowappearsinthemiddleofthescreen.Theusercanclicktherepeatarrowtoreplaytheanimation.

Adirectselectionoptionallowstheusertousetherightandleftarrowkeystoselectanarrowonthescreen,thenpressRETURNorENTERtoselectit.

Anothermethodofcontroliscalledscanning.Acoloredrectanglehighlightsanobjectonthescreenasyouseebelow.

Theuserusesswitchestoeitherselectanobjectortomovethecursortoadifferentobject.

Formoreinformationontheselectonmodesandalltheoptionsforreadingthestory,seeSettingsonpage8.

Attheendofthestory,incauseandeffectmodetheprogramreturnstotheMainMenu.Withdirectselection,theusercanchoosetoreadthestoryagain,playthesong,orreturntothemainmenu.

Play the SongToplaythesong,select“PlaytheSong”fromthemainmenuortype(Mac:⌘-PorWin:Ctrl+P)fromanotheractivity.Thesongwillloopinthebackgroundaslongasyouleaveit.Tostopthesongandreturntothemainmenu,pressakeyorswitchorclickthemouse.

SettingsTheSettingsdialogallowsyoutosetalltheoptionalsettingsinThe Lord is My Shepherd.TheSettingsdialogisautomaticallyopenedthefirsttimeyourunThe Lord is My Shepherd.YoucanalsoopentheSettingsdialogbyclickingthe“Settings”icononthemainmenu.Finally,youcanopenitatanytimebytyping(Mac:⌘-K,orWin:Ctrl+K).Adialogsomethinglikethisonewillappear(thisexampleisfromtheMacintoshversion):

Direct SelectionDirectselectionallowstheusertodirectlychooseanitemwithamouseorotherpointingdevice.

Mouse/Touch ScreenAllpointingdevicesworkthesamewayfordirectselectioninThe Lord is My Shepherd.Simplyclickonanitemtoselectit.Directselectionisthefastestandeasiestwaytousetheprogramsforthoseplayerswhocandoit.

Arrow Keys ThekeyboardcanbeusedfordirectselectionwhentheArrowKeysboxischecked.Acoloredcursorwillhighlightanobjectonthescreen.Usethearrowkeystomovethehighlighttothedesiredobject,thenpressRETURNorENTERtoselectit.

ScanningNumerousscanningoptionsareincludedinThe Lord is My Shepherd,andthesettingsarequicklyandeasilycustomizedtomeetindividualstudentneeds.Whileinscanningmode,thecomputerwillscanallpossiblechoicesforthestudent.Afterachoiceismade,scanningresumesatthenextavailableitem.

Selectthenumberofswitches,typeofscanning,andthescanrate(fortimedauto-scanning).Theplayercanuseone,twoorthreeswitchestocontroltheprogram.

Withtimedscanning(sometimescalled“autoscanning”),thecomputerscanstheavailablechoicesatthescanrateyouhavechosen.Withstepscanning,thestudentusestwoormoreswitchestoscanthechoicesandmakeaselection.The Lord is My Shepherdofferseachofthesemethods.

One Switch Timed Auto-ScanWhenusingasingleswitchfortimedauto-scanning,thecomputerwillscanattheratespecifiedintheSettingsdialog.Thestudentusestheswitchtoselectthecurrentchoice.

Oneswitchauto-scanningisthemosttediousofscanmethods,andcanbefrustratingforauserwhocanhandlemorethanoneswitch.Oneswitchscanningisbestforuserstooyoungtounderstandtwoswitchscanning,orthosewhoareonlycapableofaccessingasingleswitch.

Foroneswitchauto-scanning,configureyourswitchinterfacetosendamouseclick,spacebar,RETURNcharacter,number“1”orletter“Y”whentheswitchispressed.Thesamekeysonthekeyboardcanalsobeusedas“switches”.

Two Switch Step ScanningWhenusingtwoswitchscanning,thefirstswitchselectsthecurrentitem,justlikewithoneswitchscanning,andthesecondswitchcausestheprogramtoscan.Thestudentmovesthroughthechoicesattheirownpace(thescanratedoesnotapply).Twoswitchstepscanningistheeasiestwayforswitchuserstousetheprogram.

Fortwoswitchscanning,configureyourswitchinterfacetosendamouseclick,RETURNcharacter,number“1”orletter“Y”whenswitch#1ispressed.Configureyourswitchinterfacetosendaright-click,spacebar,TABcharacter,number“2”orletter“N”whenswitch#2ispressed.Thesamekeysonthekeyboardcanalsobeusedas“switches”.

Three Switch Step ScanningWiththreeswitchscanning,thestudentusesanoptionalthirdswitchtoscaninreverse.Asbefore,switch#2scanstothenextchoice,andswitch#1selectsthechoice,andthescanratedoesnotapply.

Threeswitchscanningisthefastestwayforanaccomplishedswitchusertousetheprogram.

Forthreeswitchscanning,configureyourswitchinterfacetosendamouseclick,RETURNcharacter,number“1”orletter“Y”whenswitch#1ispressed.Configuretheinterfacetosendaright-click,spacecharacterornumber“2”orletter“N”whenswitch#2ispressed.ConfiguretheswitchinterfacetosendaTABcharacterornumber“3”whenswitch#3ispressed.

Flashing Cursor Whenthe“Flashing”buttonison,thescanningcursorflashesoncepersecond.Thisvisualcuedrawsattentiontothelocationofthecursor.

Solid CursorWhenthe“Solid”buttonison,thecursordoesn’tflashatall,butalwaysremainsonthescreen.Therearetwomainreasonsforusingthisoption.First,ifthestudentisdistractedbytheflashingofthecursor,youcanturnitsolid.Second,ifthescanrateissetveryfast,like1or2seconds,itcansometimesbeeasiertofollowwithasolidcursor.

Scan SoundThescansoundisthesoundthatisplayedwhentheprogramscansthroughthechoices,eitherautomaticallyforone-switchscanning,orwhentheuserscansmanually.Theprogramcanplayaclickorabeepsound,averbalprompt,ornoneatall.

Theverbalpromptisanaidtolow-visionorpre-readingstudents.Thisfeatureiswhatistypicallycalled“auditoryscanning”.Itpromptsthestudentwithanauditoryclueastowhatactiontheselectionswitchwillperform.Thepromptforatextobjectmightsay“Readit.”Foranarrow,itmightsay“Nextpage”or“Goback.”

Click Sound

Theclicksoundisthesoundthatisplayedwhentheusermakesaselection,eitherbyclickingthemouse,pressingakey,orpressingtheselectswitch.

Highlight Options

ThehighlightoptionscontrolthewaythatThe Lord is My Shepherddrawstherectanglethathighlightsthescreenitemswhenscanningorusingthearrowkeys.Youcanadjustthesesettingstoprovidethemaximumvisibilityforyourstudents.Lowvisionstudentsmaybenefitfromhighcontrastsettingsobtainedbychangingthebackgroundcoloroftheentirescreen.

Clickonacolorswatchtobringupastandardcolorpicker.Choosethenewcoloryouwantforthehighlight.

ClickonNarrowLinesorWideLinestoselectthewidthofthehighlightrectangle.

Auto-Advance Options

The Lord is My Shepherdoffersanauto-advancemodefortheuserwhocannotcontroltheprogramwithothermeans.WhentheAuto-advancestoryboxischecked,theprogramwillautomaticallybeginthenextanimationorturnthenextpageattheratespecifiedintheAdvanceAfterfield.

Note: When auto-advance is turned on, the normal input method still works. To avoid confusion, this setting should not be turned on for a user who can use one of the other methods. It is intended for the student who is unable or uninterested in controlling the program themselves.

Animate TextWhenthisboxischecked,theprogramhighlightseachwordofthesentenceasitisread.Youcanturnthisfeatureofftolimitdistractionsfortheuserwhocannotreadorwillneverread.

Play Background MusicCheckthisboxofftoturnoffthebackgroundmusicthatplaysduringReadtheStory.ThisdoesnotaffectthemusicplayedbyPlaytheSong.

Default SettingsClickthisbuttontorestoreallThe Lord is My Shepherdsettingstotheirdefaultvalues.
