The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out in the

Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was

full of bones. 2And he led me around among them, and behold, there

were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were

very dry. 3And he said to me, Son of man, can these bones live? And

I answered, O Lord God, you know.

11Then he said to me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of

Israel. Behold, they say, Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost;

we are indeed cut off. 12Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus

says the Lord God: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from

your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel. 13And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves,

and raise you from your graves, O my people. 14And I will put my

Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own

land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I

will do it, declares the Lord.

—Ezekiel 37:1-3; 11-14

7 OPENINg HYmN

"Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates"

Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates;

Behold, the King of glory waits;

The King of kings is drawing near;

The Savior of the world is here!

Fling wide the portals of your heart;

Make it a temple, set apart

From earthly use for heav’n’s employ,

Adorned with prayer and love and joy.

Redeemer, come, with us abide;

Our hearts to thee we open wide;

Let us thy inner presence feel;

Thy grace and love in us reveal.

Thy Holy Spirit lead us on

Until our glorious goal is won;

Eternal praise, eternal fame

Be offered, Savior, to thy name!

Words: Georg Weissel, 1642; tr. Catherine Winkworth, 1855. Music: Psalmodia

Evangelica, 1789.

7 CALL TO WORSHIP

Pastor: Let us worship God, who has done great things.

People: We rejoice in our God, who made a way

through the desert of this world.

Pastor: Let us worship God, who has caused streams of mercy

to flow in the wasteland.

ALL: We are the people God has formed through Christ;

we worship him, and we rejoice!

from Isaiah 43:19-21

7 PRAYER OF INVOCATION

Almighty and everlasting God, who, of Your tender love towards

mankind, has sent Your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon

Him our flesh, and to suffer death upon the cross, that all mankind

should follow the example of His great humility: Mercifully grant

that we may both follow the example of His patience, and also be

made partakers of His resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ

our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one

God, for ever and ever. Amen.

7SECOND HYmN

“Come, Thou Fount”

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,

Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;

Streams of mercy, never ceasing,

Call for songs of loudest praise.

Teach me some melodious sonnet,

Sung by flaming tongues above.

Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,

Mount of Thy redeeming love.

Here I raise mine Ebenezer;

Hither by Thy help I’m come;

And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,

Safely to arrive at home.

Jesus sought me when a stranger,

Wandering from the fold of God;

He, to rescue me from danger,

Interposed His precious blood.

O, to grace how great a debtor

Daily I’m constrained to be!

Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,

Bind my wandering heart to Thee:

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,

Prone to leave the God I love;

Here’s my heart, O take and seal it;

Seal it for Thy courts above.

Here’s my heart, O take and seal it;

Seal it for Thy courts above.

Words: Robert Robinson, 1758. Music: NETTLETON; Asahel Nettleton, 1825.

OLD TESTAmENT READINg

Psalm 130

A Song of Ascents.

1Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord! 2O Lord, hear my voice!

Let your ears be attentive

to the voice of my pleas for mercy!

3If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,

O Lord, who could stand?4But with you there is forgiveness,

that you may be feared.

5I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,

and in his word I hope;6my soul waits for the Lord

more than watchmen for the morning,

more than watchmen for the morning.

7O Israel, hope in the Lord!

For with the Lord there is steadfast love,

and with him is plentiful redemption.8And he will redeem Israel

from all his iniquities.

This is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

CONFESSION OF SIN

Pastor: Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make

you obey its passions. Do not present your members to

sin as instruments for unrighteousness…

Romans 6:12-13a

ALL: God of mercy,

you sent Jesus Christ to seek and save the lost.

We confess that we have strayed from you

and turned aside from your way.

We are misled by pride,

for we see ourselves pure when we are stained,

and great when we are small.

We have failed in love,

neglected justice,

and ignored your truth.

Have mercy, O God, and forgive our sin.

Return us to paths of righteousness

through Jesus Christ, our Savior.

7ASSURANCE OF PARDON Pastor: …but present yourselves to God as those who have been

brought from death to life, and your members to God

as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no

dominion over you, since your are not under law but

under grace.

Romans 6:13b-14

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and

remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of

life, and the grace and consolation of His Holy Spirit.

ALL: Amen.

HYmN OF RESPONSE

“Go to Dark Gethsemane”

Go to dark Gethsemane,

You who feel the tempter’s pow’r;

Your Redeemer’s conflict see;

Watch with Him one bitter hour;

Turn not from His griefs away;

Learn of Jesus Christ to pray.

Follow to the judgment hall;

View the Lord of life arraigned;

O the worm-wood and the gall!

O the pangs His soul sustained!

Shun not suff’ring, shame, or loss;

Learn of Him to bear the cross.

Calv’ry’s mournful mountain climb

There adoring at His feet,

Mark the miracle of time,

God’s own sacrifice complete:

“It is finished!” Hear the cry;

Learn of Jesus Christ to die.

gIVINg OF FIRST FRUITS

“Ah, Holy Jesus”

The Chancel Choir

Ah, holy Jesus, how hast Thou offended,

That we to judge Thee have in hate pretended?

By foes derided, by Thine own rejected,

O most afflicted!

Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon Thee?

Alas, my treason, Jesus, hath undone Thee!

‘Twas I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied Thee;

I crucified Thee.

For me, kind Jesus, was Thine incarnation,

Thy mortal sorrow, and Thy life’s oblation;

Thy death of anguish and Thy bitter passion,

For my salvation .

Therefore, kind Jesus, since I cannot pay Thee,

I do adore Thee, and will ever pray Thee,

Think on Thy pity and Thy love unswerving,

Not my deserving.

7 PASSINg OF THE PEACE

Pastor: The peace of the LORD be with you.

People: And also with you!

Greet one another with words of peace and reconciliation such as

those above.

PREPARATION FOR COmmUNION

The “passing of the peace” precedes the Lord’s Supper as a liturgical reminder

of our unity as members of Christ’s body. 1 Corinthians 11:18-19 implores us

to not let factions and divisions remain in our midst. Thus, the peace calls us

to move toward our brothers and sisters as Christ moves toward us.

All who are united in Christ Jesus by faith and are baptized, communing

members of His visible Church are invited to come to the Lord’s Table. If you

are not communing but would like to participate, come forward and fold

your hands, and you will receive a prayer of blessing from the server.

mORNINg PRAYER AND LORD'S PRAYER

And so Lord, we pray as Christ taught:

ALL: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in

heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us

our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the

kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever, Amen.

gOSPEL READINg

John 11:1-46

Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary

and her sister Martha. 2It was Mary who anointed the Lord with

ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus

was ill. 3So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love

is ill.” 4But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead

to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be

glorified through it.”

5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6So, when he

heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place

where he was. 7Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to

Judea again.” 8The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just

now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” 9Jesus

answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks

in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this

world. 10But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because

the light is not in him.” 11After saying these things, he said to

them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken

him.” 12The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he

will recover.”

13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he

meant taking rest in sleep. 14Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus

has died, 15and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that

you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16So Thomas, called the

Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die

with him.”

17Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been

in the tomb four days. 18Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two

miles off, 19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to

console them concerning their brother. 20So when Martha heard

that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained

Page 19: The Lord’s Day in Worshipcovenantdayschool.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/CovPres-WG-Ap… · O Lord, who could stand? 4But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared

seated in the house. 21Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been

here, my brother would not have died. 22But even now I know that

whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” 23Jesus said to her,

“Your brother will rise again.” 24Martha said to him, “I know that

he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25Jesus said

to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in

me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26and everyone who lives and

believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27She said to

him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God,

who is coming into the world.”

28When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary,

saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. 30Now

Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place

where Martha had met him. 31When the Jews who were with her

in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they

followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep

there. 32Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him,

she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my

brother would not have died.”

33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come

with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and

greatly troubled. 34And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They

said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus wept. 36So the Jews said,

“See how he loved him!” 37But some of them said, “Could not he

who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man

from dying?”

38Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a

cave, and a stone lay against it. 39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.”

Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this

time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” 40Jesus

said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see

the glory of God?” 41So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted

Page 20: The Lord’s Day in Worshipcovenantdayschool.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/CovPres-WG-Ap… · O Lord, who could stand? 4But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared

up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the

people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice,

“Lazarus, come out.” 44The man who had died came out, his hands

and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth.

Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

45Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had

seen what he did, believed in him, 46but some of them went to the

Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

This is the gospel of the Lord.

Praise be to you, O Christ.

gOD WELCOmES US TO HIS TABLE

INVITATION

The Apostle's Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;

who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;

he descended into hell;

the third day he rose again from the dead;

he ascended into heaven,

and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church;

the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins;

the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.

Amen.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

from 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Mark 14:22-25

PRAYER OF HUmBLE ACCESS

ALL: We do not presume to come to this your Table, O merciful

Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your

manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much

as to gather up the crumbs under your Table, but you

are the same Lord whose property is always to have

mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the

flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink His

blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by His

body and our souls washed through His most precious

blood, that we may evermore dwell in Him, and He in us.

Amen.

CONSECRATION OF THE ELEmENTS

Celebrant: Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon

us and upon these your gifts of bread and wine,

that the bread we break and the cup we bless

may be the communion of the body and blood

of Christ. By your Spirit make us one with Christ,

that we may be one with all who share this feast,

united in ministry in every place. As this bread

is Christ’s body for us, send us out to be the body

of Christ in the world.

HYmNS FOR THE EUCHARIST

“O Sacred Head Now Wounded”

O sacred Head, now wounded,

With grief and shame weighed down,

Now scornfully surrounded

With thorns, Thine only crown:

How pale thou art with anguish,

With sore abuse and scorn!

How does that visage languish

Which once was bright as morn!

What Thou, my Lord, hast suffered

Was all for sinners' gain;

Mine, mine was the transgression,

But Thine the deadly pain.

Lo, here I fall my Savior!

'Tis I deserve Thy place;

Look on me with Thy favor,

Vouchsafe to me Thy grace.

What language shall I borrow

To thank Thee, dearest friend,

For this Thy dying sorrow,

Thy pity without end?

O make me Thine forever;

And should I fainting be,

Lord, let me never, never

Outlive my love to Thee.

Words: Bernard of Clarivaux, 1091-1153; tr. By Paul Gerhardt, 1656; tr. by James W.Alex-

ander, 1830. Music: PASSION CHORALE; Hans Leo Hassler, 1601;

“Christ is Made the Sure Foundation”

Christ is made the sure foundation,

Christ, the head and cornerstone,

Chosen of the Lord and precious,

Binding all the church in one;

Holy Zion’s help forever,

And her confidence alone.

All that dedicated city,

Dearly loved of God on high,

In exultant jubilation,

Pours perpetual melody;

God the One in Three adoring,

In glad hymns eternally.

To this temple, where we call Thee,

Come, O Lord of hosts, today;

With Thy wonted loving-kindness;

Hear Thy people as they pray,

And Thy fullest benediction

Shed within its walls always.

Here vouch-safe to all Thy servants

What they ask of Thee to gain.

What they gain from Thee, forever

With the blessed to retain;

And hereafter in Thy glory

Evermore with Thee to reign.

Laud and honor to the Father,

Laud and honor to the Son,

Laud and honor to the Spirit,

Ever Three and ever One:

One in might, and One in glory

While unending ages run!
