Dear Neighbours,

Here it is - issue 25. You might recall that last

issue’s profits were all donated to charity. I

divided them between Lossiemouth Youth Café,

Lossiemouth Youth Football Club, Melissa Carr’s

Project Trust Gap Year Project (see page 20),

Christian Aid’s Syria Crisis Appeal, The Refugee

Council, Conscience, Freedom from Torture, The

Neuroblastoma Society and Community Food

Moray’s Food Bank. This issue’s 10% donation

will be given to St Aiden’s Church, RAF

Lossiemouth, to be put towards their fundraising

projects next year.

Thank you to Crossroads Caring Scotland, whose

volunteers have delivered this issue. And thanks

too to Lossiemouth artist Elaine Renee Smith who

has kindly allowed me to use some of her artwork

for the front cover.

We have a few new advertisers to welcome on

board. Exciting developments seem to be afoot

at Silver Sands - see their ads on pages18 & 19.

If you’re thinking of buying or selling a property

turn to page 21 for CCL’s advert. I recently met

up with Coralie, one of their MDs, and was pretty

impressed with their customer focus. Harbour

Service Station is on page 33 - definitely my place

of choice to fill up on a cold winter morning as I

can stay in the car!

As usual there are a few things going on over the

next couple of months. Check out the ‘What’s

On’ section - you’re spoilt for choice on 30 Nov,

including the big Christmas Lights switch-on.

The Spring issue will be out round about the first

week of March. So make sure to get in touch if

you have a business to advertise, or have any

community information to submit. Full details at

Did you know that you could be entitled to a free eye test in your own home, and, perhaps more importantly, are you aware of just how important a regular eye examination is? Fortunately we have our very own optometrist living in Lossiemouth, Amanda, who has 25 years of experience. As well as being qualified to carry out the eye examination itself, she can also give you help in choosing spectacles and providing advice on the type of frames that will best suit your face shape, suitable lens types and the different types of coatings that are available. She has a wide selection of frames to choose from, all at very competitive prices, starting from £49.95 for single vision spectacles.

NHS guidelines recommend that everybody should receive an eye

test at least once every 2 years, regardless of whether your eyes are causing a problem or not. If you are over 60 then an eye test is recommended every year, which is free under the NHS. Furthermore, if you are housebound, you will be entitled to a free eye examination at home.

So why are regular eye tests so important? Most of us never even think to question the need for regular dental check-ups, so why should the health of our eyes be any different? Eye examinations are important not only to detect and correct vision problems, but also for early detection of common eye diseases such as Glaucoma and Cataract, many of which have no symptoms in their early stages. Glaucoma is a disease that patients often don't notice in

in the comfort of your own home

themselves until it's often too late. If left undiagnosed and untreated, it can lead to serious sight loss. Yet a simple eye test is all that's needed to detect glaucoma. In most cases early detection and treatment of eye disease can significantly reduce the risk of permanent vision loss. It's also possible to detect early signs of some other conditions and diseases by looking at the eye's blood vessels and retina, such as high blood pressure.

Amanda can carry out eye tests in the comfort of your own home to check the quality of your sight, look for signs of eye disease which may need treatment from a doctor or eye surgeon, and prescribe and fit glasses. She uses the very latest portable equipment to enable her to perform a full eye examination.

If you are unable to leave the house because you are housebound either due to a physical or mental disability then

you will be covered for a free NHS eye examination. Hopefully Amanda will be able to give your eyes a clean bill of health, but if she does find a problem then early detection could save your sight.

Even if you don't qualify for a free eye test, you can still take advantage of having an examination at home with Amanda for a very reasonable fee. Furthermore McClintock Home Eyecare are offering a 10% discount to Lossie Local readers - even more of an incentive to get your eyes checked out.

So don't delay - your sight could depend on it.

“As a local tradesman I have found it invaluable to advertise in this publication. It appears to me that many potential customers hold on to their copies of The Lossie Local, and refer

The Lossie Local - Why Advertise?

About The Lossie Local

The Lossie Local was established in May

2008, home produced by a Lossie resident, with the aim of disseminating community information and providing an affordable way for local businesses to promote themselves.

Community Focus

All of the community news, events and editorials included in the magazine is done so free of charge, a great way for local organisations to promote

themselves and normally only available

at great expense in other publications. Local groups deliver the magazine for a £300 donation, and 10% of profits each issue are given to local charities.

Affordable Advertising

The Lossie Local has deliberately kept prices low so local businesses can afford to advertise. Where else can you get a

quarter page advert from as little as £26!

It’s Win Win All Round!

Charity & community groups get great exposure and local businesses get

effective, affordable advertising.

RAF Lossiemouth Team Complete Charity Cycle

Challenge

On 20 Sep 13 a group of four personnel from RAF Lossiemouth headed south to embark on a charity Land’s End to John O’Groats bike ride in support of the Royal Air Forces Association

(RAFA) and MFR Cash For Kids.

Traditionally a 12 day challenge, the team, comprising cyclists Flt Lt Dave Hapgood, Sgt Lee Craig and Sgt Martin Jones, and support driver Cpl Chris Hill, chose to complete the 884 miles in just seven days, meaning an

incredible average of more than 125 miles per day. Cpl Hill also set a personal daily goal to do two press-ups for every mile completed; an

impressive feat in itself!

Setting off from Land’s End, the team were

faced with mist and drizzle, which stayed with them throughout Cornwall. That first day Sgt

Craig suffered not one, not two, but three punctures; not a great start. But unperturbed, they started strongly on the second day… strongly in the wrong direction! Interrupting his press up regime, Cpl Hill picked them up and set them off again from the start point, this

time heading north-east as planned.

Days three and four were the longest days, at 138 and 140 miles respectively. Day three, the most urban section, went well, and day four was looking promising too, particularly after Google Maps revealed a handy shortcut directly

to Gretna. Sadly the ‘shortcut’ turned out to be a rutted Landrover track, at the end of which was a five foot high barbed wire fence. An undignified scramble over the fence and down a steep muddy hill put them back on track towards the Scottish border with no miles saved

and wet feet.

Given recent events, the team weren’t too optimistic about navigating through Glasgow on the fifth day, particularly given that the Erskine Bridge was closed and an alternate

bridge shown in their 2010 road atlas was apparently now missing. After consulting a local, they found a small passenger ferry that would take them and their bikes safely over the Clyde so that they could

continue on, out of Glasgow.

The stunning scenery, good weather and the thought of sleeping in their own beds that night sustained the team through the near freezing temperatures of Glencoe, to Fort William and up the Great Glen to

Inverness.

The final leg, from Inverness to John O’Groats, although physically exhausting, saw lots of encouragement from friends and family, and

even a fly past from a Tornado returning to RAF Lossiemouth. A few mechanical mishaps overcome, and the team rolled into John O’Groats just after 6pm to be greeted by friends and

family, some celebratory whisky and some welcome comfortable seats to be driven home in.

Flt Lt Dave Hapgood says, “The team would like to thank everybody who donated towards our cycle challenge enabling us to raise a total approaching £3000, Asda and Tesco who allowed us to do fundraising outside their stores, Highland Bikes who provided our bike spares,

Lossiemouth Cleaning Fairies for their kind donation and lastly, to family and friends who helped with our fundraising efforts both before and during the event and allowed us the time to

train in readiness for the event.”

RAFA is committed to providing confidential, professional and fair services to members of the

wider RAF family from the youngest recruit to the oldest veteran and their families.

Cash for Kids is the official charity of Moray Firth Radio and provides a helping hand to

disabled and disadvantaged children around the Highlands, Moray and Aberdeenshire.

Ladybird Fundraiser Over the years the Medical Practice has maintained close links with Ladybird Developmental Nursery and has done a

number of fundraising activities for them. Two years ago we successfully raised money through a Christmas Quiz which we’re repeating this year. Quiz sheets can be found in the main surgery and also in Burghead and Hopeman, and in all of the

local chemists. The prizes are lovely Christmas hampers with goodies donated by staff of the Practice. The prizes will be drawn on Monday 16 December.

Flu Clinics So far this year we held our usual ‘flu day’ in the Town Hall on Thursday 10 October, when 886 people were vaccinated - up 100 on last year. As ever it was a good day with lots of chat and copious cups of tea

and biscuits served by St Gerardines High and St James Women's Guild. We also had a ‘catch-up’ day in the Practice on Saturday 19 October which saw a further 257 attending. As usual we’re eternally grateful to the help and support of the Patient Participation Group in ensuring that

these clinics run smoothly.

If you think you’re eligible for a vaccination

but have not yet had one then please make an appointment with the nurse at the Practice.

Text Message Reminders Did you know you can now register to receive information by text message on your phone regarding appointments and

health care? Fill in the consent form online at www.moraycoastmedicalpractice.co.uk.

When We Are Closed If you need urgent medical advice out of hours dial 0845 337 1190 as usual. You’ll be transferred through to NHS 24 who will

triage your call and advise whether you need to be seen either by a nurse or doctor at the out-of-hours service - GMED - based at Dr Gray’s. Call 999 in an emergency. Chest pains, and/or shortness of breath, constitute an emergency.

Finally, all the staff of the Medical

Practice wish you all a Happy Christmas and a healthy and

prosperous 2014.

Fifty years ago this was a non-question. We just started to tap into the vast reserves of local oil and gas here on our doorstep in the North Sea. It was convenient and cheap. For many homes it meant an end to the hard graft of shovelling

hundredweights of coal into open fireplaces just to keep warm in winter. Having instant heat from a thermostat or timer controlled oil boiler was much more convenient and cleaner.

Now we’re being told to become more energy

efficient. Our fuel bills have become a lot more expensive. And many experts and politicians talk about the threat from climate change. In fifty years from now it’ll be a non-question

again. Oil and gas will still be around, but so scarce and expensive that we wouldn’t dream of just burning it for heat or transport. It will be treated like any rare and precious material.

We’re lucky to be around just at the right time to have such a convenient source of energy. 50 years either side of now and it wouldn’t be available to us. And there’s another point that

gets rarely mentioned in renewable energy

discussions. In addition to the threat of rising sea levels, higher temperatures and more unpredictable weather, there’s also the fact that

we’re consuming something that cannot be brought back. We’re depriving our children from having access to a material they might need for the creation of important things or medicine that

could not be made without it.

It took our planet Earth millions of years to

‘make’ oil and gas. And we just burn it all in a fraction of that time. In any other situation in life our instincts would tell us this can’t be right. But because we’re so used to the convenience of oil

and gas we think nothing of it.

This is why we do have a need for renewable energy. We have to find a different source for our energy needs. In fact, we have to find many new sources of energy, because there aren’t any

that are so plentiful and easily controllable as fossil fuels have been. Of course, there are many arguments against most forms of renewable energy. But most of the time they’re

not fairly discussed. Anybody that criticises the poor utilisation rate of wind turbines at about 25% to 30% should first consider the utilisation rate of their own car, typically less than 5%.

People who point out that wood pellets, being a ‘manufactured’ fuel, are not really renewable, have not really grasped the extent of ‘manufacturing’ required for fossil fuel.

Comparing a pellet factory with an oil refinery is like comparing a bicycle with an Aston Martin.

Unfortunately sometimes the industry and politics don’t do the renewable agenda any favours either. For example, as long as the majority of electricity is produced from fossil

fuels, air-source heat pumps are not really a renewable technology. And the poorly executed feed-in-tariff has only raised the expectation in people’s mind that they need to be paid for

installing a renewable technology. Has anybody ever asked for a payback period of an oil boiler?

It’s time that we discuss the real issues. The question isn’t whether or not to have a wind farm. It’s where our energy should come from if

not from this wind farm. The easiest solution would of course be to use a lot less energy in the first place. But who’s prepared to do this?

Hi, my name is Melissa Carr and

I’m a 6th year student at

Lossiemouth High School. During

August 2013 I travelled to the Isle of Coll for a hands on

selection course with Project Trust, a

registered charity which sends about 250

volunteers aged between 17 and 19 to 23

countries annually. Their main philosophy is

to provide young people with an opportunity

to understand a community by immersing

themselves in it; living and working there for

a year. They have the expertise and the

infrastructure to ensure all volunteers are given a challenging and exciting opportunity

to develop themselves, and all the support

available to them when the need it. I am now

going to be a volunteer in South Africa for 12

months where I will be working and living with

orphaned children, taking care of them on a

day-to-day basis and supporting their

emotional and physical needs, as well as teaching them basic English communication

skills. I am currently the only pupil from my

school who has ever been on this project.

South Africa is an extraordinarily diverse

country; ethnically, geographically and

economically. It still has a long way to go to

becoming a fully developed country, with

many still living in absolute poverty. The gap

between rich and poor is one of the highest

in the world. An estimated 5.6 million

of the population are

living with HIV, of

which 1.2 million of

those are orphans.

To fund this year of volunteering and this

once in a lifetime experience I need to

fundraise £5,600. I am organising many

fundraising events to help me meet my

target, such as a charity bottle bingo, car

boot sales, quiz nights and a ceilidh, coffee

mornings and working part time. I’m just

about half way there at the moment, partly thanks to a successful 2 wks in the Queen

Street charity shop in October.

If you would like any further information please feel free to contact me. Any

donations, no matter how small, will be

greatly appreciated. You can donate by

BEFORE AFTER

ROTARY TO THE RESCUE!!

Elgin Rotary Club enjoys a membership of over 80 ladies and gentlemen from all over Moray, including several from Lossiemouth. In looking at new ways to serve its communities, the club heard

that Lossiemouth Youth Café was in need of a spruce up, and immediately offered its services to give the venue a new lick of paint. Little were they to know that the intricate woodwork, multiple rooms, toilets and surfaces would take the entire club the whole summer holidays to complete the task!

Hundreds of hours, tins upon tins of paint, and the most varied array of overalls (!) were used to complete the task in time for the new term opening and the later Grand Opening in November.

Community Convener and Rotarian Margaret Stenton said, “it certainly was a bigger task than we

anticipated, but in true Rotary style they all rolled up their sleeves and got it done, and really enjoyed doing it.” Youth Café volunteer Craig

Mackay commented, “It was amazing to watch the transformation and the almost military style of operation

that the club implemented – the place looks brand new again.” Elgin Rotary Club President Bill Ross said, “We’ve supported Lossie Youth Café before financially, but this time it was great to actually get hands on – the

venue is so well looked after by the young people that I know our members were very proud of them and proud to help in this way.”

Lossiemouth Youth Café is now almost 6 years old and is used by hundreds of young people from the Laich area every

week. Rotarians were extremely impressed at how well looked after the venue is, with no graffiti or damage, and wanted to give this current generation of users a boost by making it brand new again. The refurbishment programme was entirely funded

by the club and the young users assisted the project at various stages in making the venue ready before and afterwards.

Lossiemouth Youth Café would like to extend their sincerest thanks to Elgin Rotary Club for what they have achieved, and looks forward to returning the favour in some way in the future!

If you have a child aged 3-5, you should be

aware that shortly after Christmas you’ll have the opportunity to register them for pre-

school. Depending on their birthday, they’ll be entitled to up to two years of part-time pre

-school education, funded by the Government. A funded part-time place offers up to 5 sessions (2½ hours per session) of pre-school

education per week. Pre-school education is not compulsory, you decide whether you want

your child to participate.

In January each year, an ad appears in the

local press, and posters are displayed locally, inviting parents to register their child at their preferred pre-school education centre during

the registration week (which is normally mid-January).

Here is a list of pre-school providers in our area. Note that the funding is not restricted to

council nursery classes (in local primary schools), you can register at one of the privately run centres, it’s entirely up to you

which you choose.

Take time to visit the different pre-schools, then register at the centre you would prefer to

attend. Each centre will have a limited number of places available. The registration form asks you to list a second and third choice

of centre, including choice of morning or afternoon, and the council will contact these

centres on your behalf if you don’t get your first choice.

For further information, see the Moray Council

website, or contact them directly on (01343) 563267.

Finally, if your wee one is not yet eligible for

funded places, there’s a 2-3 group at Lossiemouth Community Centre. Little Angels offers 90min sessions for unaccompanied

toddlers every weekday morning, contact the Community Centre (815299) for more

information.

As I sit here writing the winter edition of the Lossie Local I cannot believe over a year has

passed since the GladiatorFit Studio opened.

With Christmas and the New Year fast

approaching, we are often occupied with all the festivities that come at this time of year. Often we set aside our usual weekly routine to make sure everything gets done on time, and that

means we can neglect our planned workouts.

Everyone knows that once the New Year is done and dusted, we plan to start eating healthy and commit to a new exercise regime. However, we all know how hard it can be to stick to our

resolutions. These are often broken before you’ve even given them a chance. Sometimes what you need is a little guidance. It may just be that you haven’t found the right Gym, Circuit

Class, or Personal Trainer, and that’s where I can help.

If you’ve been thinking for some time that you

would like to get fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle, but aren’t sure where to start, GladiatorFit has so much to offer. Whatever your

targets are, I know there’s a service here that can work for you.

Consultation is key to ensuring the correct programme is tailored to your needs. It’s a great opportunity to meet and discuss exactly what you’re looking for, whether it’s a one-to-one

based session, a circuit class or boot camp environment.

So let me tell you a little about each, so that you can decide what would be best for you.

Personal Training. This is usually done on a

one-to-one basis, although you can come along

with a friend and do partner sessions if this suits better. The great thing about Personal Training is your sessions are designed especially for you. At consultation we sit and go through short and

long term goals and I make sure that we’re on the right path to achieve these. The ultimate goal of course is to make a happier and healthier you. There are morning, afternoon, evening and

weekend sessions available.

about trying new classes. Are you looking for a fitter, more toned, leaner you? If the answer is yes, then come and try GladiatorFit! The Circuit

Classes are on 4 days a week. All classes last for 1 hour and suit all levels of fitness. I design the programme so that whatever your fitness levels everyone can participate, you just go at

your own pace. Due to the number of classes I make sure there is lots of variation, but one thing is for sure you will work all the areas of the body and most importantly have fun. The classes are

pay as you go with no booking requirements, leaving you flexible to fit them in around your weekly routine.

Boot Camp. The monthly Boot Camps are

great if you’re looking to achieve maximum results in a minimum amount of time. The first

Boot Camp started last November and has been booming ever since. You will be weighed weekly and measured at the start and end of the boot camp. I will also help you with your diet and any

other health related questions you may have.

For maximum results, I recommend 4 sessions a week. However, I know how precious time is, so now you have the flexibility to do 2,3 or 4 sessions. Also don’t be scared by the word

“Boot Camp.” Often people think if you’re not ultra fit already then it will be too tough. No matter how fit you are, this type of training will boosts your levels of fitness very quickly. Don’t

think military fitness, think Gladiator Fitness! Let GladiatorFit get you in the best shape of your life and Make 2014 your fittest year yet!

In fact what a great New Year’s Resolution – 2014 to be fitter than I have ever been!

So don’t just read about what’s on offer, let’s set up a consultation and make it happen. Don’t just

think fit, think GladiatorFit!

A King is Born What excitement was evident on the 22nd of July this year as the world awaited the arrival of a new baby, born to be king! How quickly the news spread across the world when Prince George

arrived safely to the delight of his parents, the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge. Although Prince George has been born into a very favourable environment and is destined to be king, it is likely to be many years before he actually ascends to the throne. Unfortunately the present - more senior royals - will have to pass into eternity before he can be crowned king.

The birth of Prince George stands in marked contrast to another King born just over 2000 years ago. Although the birth of the Lord Jesus was in humble circumstances, He was actually born a King. When the Wise Men visited Him they asked, “where is He that is born King of the

Jews?” (Matthew 2:2)

The Lord Jesus was not born to parents who were celebrities. His father was a carpenter from Nazareth and His first bed was a cattle manger. The Creator of the

Universe was born into extremely humble surroundings.

Like Prince George, the Lord Jesus’ birth was only the start of

a life of service. He spent His early years helping His father at the carpenter’s bench. At the age of 30 we read in the bible that He began to preach and teach, travelling around the country healing people of many diseases. Sin is like a disease that affects everyone, indeed the bible tells us that, ‘all have sinned and come short of the glory of God’ (Romans 3:23), but

the bible also tells us, ’the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord’ (Romans 6:23).

The Lord Jesus was the only one ever born who was sinless and therefore exempt from the penalty of death. But because of His love for us He voluntarily laid

down His life at the cross of Calvary so that if we trust Him as

our personal Saviour we can be sure of eternal life in heaven. You have a choice - you can either accept or reject this wonderful offer, your eternal destiny depends on this choice. So when you see Prince George

growing up and moving towards his own destiny, perhaps you can take time to think of the other King born in completely different circumstances. Trusting Him is the only way that anyone of us can be sure of our eternal salvation.

Gospel of Luke 2:4-7 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with

child.

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and

wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11

TH E FACT OF T HE M ATT ER IS — Lossiemouth is an ideal centre for picnics and

excursions.

Strangers from the south too often remain

unacquainted with the beauty and interest of the surrounding district. Too much devoted to golf, perhaps, they neglect to inquire, for the benefit of the non-golfing portion of their families, what

inducement the place offers to those that would drive or walk.

To most visitors the caves of Covesea are already known by repute. West of the village, which consists of a few thatched houses on a bold rocky headland,

are the caves. The most westerly is called ‘The Cove’ or ‘Hell’s Hole,’ and is constantly tenanted by tinkers. Another is believed to have had its terminus in the workshop of the wizard of Gordonstoun, or in

some of the damp dungeons of Duffus Castle. In a cave near the Gow’s Castle, almost at the eastern extremity of the series, and having a regularly built entrance, Sir Robert Gordon, son of the famous

wizard, concealed his horses during the rebellion of 1745. From his circumstance it is called Sir Robert’s Stable.

LO SSIE N OTES AN D N EWS The herring fishing yesterday was very poor, hardly

an average of one cran for the fleet, and the prices ruled from 10s to 12s per cran.

During the week the s.s. Alacrity, from Sunderland with 230 tons of coal to Messrs J. Christie & Son, and the s.s. Earnholm with general goods, arrived in the harbour.

A meeting of fellow-townsmen has been called by

Provost Brander, Bailie Grant, and Mr Geo. Smith, in the ante-room of the Town Hall, for eight o’clock to-night, to consider what steps ought to be taken to assist the widow and family of Alexander Smith, who

lost his life in the boat Toiler in the gale of last November.

FOOT -B R ID GE AC R O SS TH E LO SSIE Dear Mr Editor, - In The Bulger of 18th July, several

improvements are suggested for the advantage of visitors, but there is one thing which seems to have

escaped your notice. A high wall has been erected opposite the station by the Great North of Scotland Railway Company, depriving holiday-makers of the fine rocks and sands, which before were to many a

most pleasant resort. I think the least the Railway Company should do by way of compensation is to put up a small foot-bridge across the river Lossie to the splendid sands that stretch from Lossiemouth to

Garmouth. There is still a sufficient part of the old harbour left to support one end; and the bridge would be a great boon to pedestrians, and to nursemaids and children, as the sands are perfectly safe, and most

agreeable to walk on. Besides, quantities of beautiful shells are to be found there. - Yours, &c., BESSIE.

One of the few irritations during my recent studies has been the background pressure to get a smartphone. Or an iPad. Or some other piece of over-hyped technology.

I’m not technologically illiterate, but I don’t buy tech tat, and I don’t get excited about every new Apple product on the market. Interestingly, some of the people who do get

excited then seem to use technology ineffectively. In the end, despite the glitz, IT is just bits of metal and plastic; if you don’t use it properly it’s nothing more than expensive bric-a-brac.

Partly this is a matter of simple practicality. I can’t afford expensive phones and tablets, and I don’t like carrying a valuable object that risks

getting broken or nicked. So I don’t. But there are also bigger, more important reasons why I don’t buy (into) such stuff.

One: generally speaking, the more a device

does, the more energy it consumes. Better

energy efficiency means this isn’t a straight-line increase, but we still get headlines about a smartphone using as much energy as a fridge. I’ve heard a lot of smartphone owners complaining that their devices need recharging daily, whereas my elderly mobile can hold out

for several days. And it’s not just a matter of expense. What about peak oil and climate change? Does the ability to play games and check emails in the back row of lectures really warrant the additional energy use?

Two: name me an electronics brand whose

products aren’t made in disgusting sweatshops in China and other ‘developing’ countries,

Why I’m not getting a Smartphone (for as long as possible)...

By Sarah Irving

Ethical consumer? Would you like to be an

Page 35: The lossie local winter 13

where people, sometimes children, work long hours for poor pay in dangerous conditions. When some are driven to suicide. Where some of those workers are children. Is your ability to

waste your time on yet another gadget really worth that measure of human pain? Really?

Three: The world is getting very excided about

the war in Syria, which is as it should be. But when did we last hear anything about the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo? The death toll in Syria is perhaps 100,000, which is appalling. But something like 6 MILLION

have died in Congo in the last decade, and one of the main drivers of conflict is the quest for rare metals needed to produce miniaturised electronics - like smartphones and ipads. That’s another way in which your gadget increases the overall sum of human misery. And if those

metals don’t come from Congo, perhaps they come from Malaysia or Brazil, where scientists have warned of the rising dangers of toxic and radioactive waste from processing plants.

Four: What kind of culture do we live in where

everyone is expected to be available, online, all the time? The last thing I want is a phone that follows me with email and Twitter and Facebook. When is a person supposed to think,

to notice and experience the world and other human beings? It drives me nuts when friends check every text and break off from coffee or lunch to take calls. It’s bad manners, and implies an underlying disrespect for face-to-face communication. And it gets worse as the stream

of information available through mobile devices gets faster and faster.

Five: so much of what happens on mobile

devices is consumption, not production or creation. My husband pointed this out when he acquired a tablet. He’s found himself using it only rarely, because he feels it transforms him into a passive consumer, only able to interact or

produce by using a cumbersome onscreen keyboard. The point was reinforced by a twitter exchange with a friend who fancied a mini-ipad. I suggested (jokingly) a pad of paper and pencil. He was surprised; he wouldn’t be writing anything. True, you can buy keyboards for most

tablets, but the fact that they have to be bought separately underlines that they are very much a secondary function. One is meant to use this device to consume, to be

passive - the modern version of ‘bread and circuses’, the time-wasting ‘opiates of the masses’ that keep us diverted from things that really matter.

Sarah Irving is studying for a PhD in Middle Eastern history at Edinburgh University. This is an extract from her blog at www.sarahirving.co.uk. It also appears

on page 20 of Ethical Consumer Magazine (EC145 Nov/Dec 2013), along with mobile phone company profiles, detailed information on alternative and ‘greener’ providers, health and environmental impacts and consumer action on conflict

minerals. There’s also a report about Fairphone - a smartphone with ethics at its core. So if you’re similarly concerned about the ethical and social impact of your phone, check it out.

HOME MADE BROTH

"Good broth will resurrect the dead," says a South American proverb. A cure-all in traditional households and the magic ingredient in classic

gourmet cuisine, stock or broth made from bones of chicken, fish and beef builds strong bones, assuages sore throats, nurtures the sick, puts

vigour in the step and sparkle in love life - so say grandmothers, midwives and healers. For chefs, stock is the magic elixir for making soul-warming soups and matchless sauces. Meat and fish stocks

play a role in all traditional cuisines - French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, African, South American, Middle Eastern and Russian.

I recommend everyone make bone broth and incorporates it into their dietary routine. Here’s why:

1. It heals a leaky gut. The gelatine in bone broth protects and heals the

mucosal lining of the digestive tract and helps aid

in the digestion of nutrients.

2. Fights infections such as colds and flu.

A study published in the journal Chest shows eating chicken soup during a respiratory infection reduces the number of white blood cells, which are the cells that cause flu and cold symptoms.

3. Reduces joint pain and inflammation. The glucosamine in bone broth can actually stimulate the growth of new collagen, repair damaged joints

and reduce pain and inflammation.

4. Produces gorgeous skin, hair and nails.

The collagen and gelatine in bone broth supports hair growth and helps to keep your nails strong.

5. Helps with bone formation, growth and repair.

The calcium, magnesium and phosphorus in bone broth helps our bones to grow and repair.

6. Saves you money.

Homemade bone broth is cheaper and healthier than store bought.

7. Super easy to make. All you need is a large pan, ovenproof dish with lid or slow cooker. Throw all of the ingredients into the pot let it cook while you get on with other things.

8. Healthier than buying supplements. Homemade bone broth contains all nutrients and

minerals found in bones and tendons rather than just one or two found in pills. Slow cooking preserves the nutrients better than the high heat extraction used to make supplements.

9. Fights inflammation. Bone broth is very high in the anti-inflammatory

amino acids glycine and proline.

10. Promotes sleep and calms the mind. The amino acid glycine found in bone broth can be

very calming.

Gut-Healing Chicken Broth Recipe Ingredients:

1 organic whole chicken, or even just the bones etc left over from a roast chicken/turkey/duck/goose 8 cups water

½ teaspoon sea salt ½ teaspoon of apple cider vinegar

Directions: Place all of the above ingredients in lidded pan/dish/slow cooker and cook on

low heat for 3 - 5 hours. I like to cook mine until the meat is falling away from the bones. You can store any excess broth in the

freezer and defrost for a later time.

In the last issue I talked about the benefits of drinking alkaline water, and mentioned that tap

water is acidic. What I should have said is that tap water can be slightly acidic. Drinking Water in Scotland should be in the range of pH 6.5 to pH

9.5, where pH 7 is neutral. Waters that are naturally low pH (i.e. more acidic), which applies to most Scottish supplies, may need to be conditioned

in order to ensure they comply with the regulatory standard (dwqr.org.uk)

This Winter Edition of The Lossie Local marks the start of change for RAF Lossiemouth, as our Station Commander, Group Captain Ian Gale hands over to his successor Group Captain

Mark Chappell.

Since the last edition of the magazine, as

always, a lot has been happening here at RAF Lossiemouth. The Station has held a number of Exercises, sent 617 Squadron and 51 RAF Regiment Squadron to Afghanistan and

welcomed 12 (Bomber) Squadron back from their final tour on Operation Herrick. In September the Station hosted 6 Apache

helicopters from 673 Squadron, Army Air Corps. They are an Apache training Squadron based at the Army Aviation centre, Middle Wallop, in Hampshire. The role of the Squadron is to: train

new pilots, pilots returning to the aircraft after a

period of non-flying related tours and newly qualified instructors. The helicopters flew from RAF Lossiemouth from 2nd September until the

11th on Exercise Panther’s Peak. The Squadron conducted mountain flying training in the Scottish Highlands so newly qualified instructors can be taught how to train students in

challenging conditions. Apache pilots learn to fly in mountainous areas as part of their pre-deployment training before deploying to Afghanistan.

Throughout the rest of September and October, 51 RAF Regiment Squadron and 617 Squadron

continued with their pre-deployment training and held their mission rehearsal weeks to ensure they were prepared for their deployment.

Fifty one Squadron departed for Afghanistan on one of the RAF’s newest aircraft, the Voyager, on 13 and 14 October, whilst 617 Squadron

deployed a few weeks later on 25 October to takeover from 12 (Bomber) Squadron, who returned safely to the Station.

RAF Lossiemouth held Exercise Joint Warrior from 7 - 18 October, which saw participation from the French and Canadian Air Forces, Navy Hawks and Cobham Falcons. The Exercise was

a great success for all involved and RAF Lossiemouth looks forward to holding Joint Warrior again next year. The Station also held an aircraft

enthusiast morning and media facility during the Exercise, if you are interested in attending our public events next year, be sure to

follow us at http://facebook.com/raflossiemouth and on our Twitter account: @RAF_Lossiemouth.

The Filling Station

Lossiemouth

“TFS” You may have seen the road signs? … You may have seen the flags outside the Town Hall every month … You may have heard the music from miles away! … “what is this?”… I hear you say??

It’s Lossie TFS - a gathering of people from churches all over the North of Scotland who wish to celebrate their faith in God in an informal and authentic fashion. It’s not a new Church! - and is run by people from various congregations in Lossiemouth who wish to welcome people into an informal environment to enjoy a cosy night in with music, food, presentations and a chat about the deeper things in life.

There are teams of qualified people who are gifted in prayer and introducing healing to people’s lives. There are some who offer dream interpretation and will assist with seeking God’s guidance for those who have questions about their lives and those they care about.

There is free food, a Christian book and CD shop, arts and crafts and information stalls for various local ministries.

Whatever you need - Lossie TFS would like to help - but most of all it promises you will meet with the touchable and powerful presence of God … come and see for yourself!

The next gathering is on Saturday 14th December 2013, and whilst the main Worship event kicks off at 7pm – the Town Hall is open ALL DAY!! – offering a coffee morning, a chance to buy some Christmas presents, books, CDs, crafts, artwork and also offering prayer and God’s help from the various ministry teams present throughout the day.

LOSSIEMOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB

Lossie began October with a trip to Mosset Park

for a game against local minnows Forres Mechanics. Following a goalless first half,

during which the ball only briefly touched the ground, Forres stole

into the lead early in the second period, and a late second goal helped Forres to their second win of the season over Lossie.

The Coasters recorded their first league win of the season against bottom placed Fort William.

The Claggan Park side arrived at Grant Park with only a point to their name, but an early goal game them hope of adding to their tally. A Willie Mathers equaliser hauled Lossie level,

and further goals from Scott Miller, Kevin Flett, and a pair from Jamie McKinnon ensured Lossie were victorious.

Lossie couldn’t make it two wins in a row, suffering a heavy loss at Keith on their next outing. Lossie conceded two early goals in

miserable conditions at Kynoch Park, and the Maroons plundered another three in the second half before consolations from Kevin Flett and Grant Mitchell gave the travelling support

something to cheer.

Title chasing Inverurie Loco Works were the

next visitors to Grant Park, and Lossie more than coped with the attacking prowess of their

lofty opponents until well into the second half. A Callum Dunbar

equaliser had Lossie level and

looking good for a point until ten minutes remained, at which point the Locos found an

extra gear and three more goals to seal the points.

Lossiemouth got back to winning ways with a victory over struggling Strathspey Thistle. The Seafield Park side were winners in Grantown last season, but Lossie got off to a flyer when

Ryan Farquhar scored in the third minute. Strathspey levelled soon after, but Scott Miller’s penalty put Lossie into the lead for a second

time and there was no way back for the hosts on a grim day in Grantown.
