Club Activities.

From our President….Finally, because it never hurts to end with a laugh, here's The Four Types of Dog Vomit(author unknown):

Yellow Urka-Gurkas: Dog runs around the house and hides under furniture while making a prolonged"uurka-guurka, uurka-guurka" noise (the only noise guaranteed to wake up a dog lover who is hung overfrom a 3:30am post-dog-show celebration). After a mad scramble to capture the dog and drag him outside, the episode ends with an indelible line of slimy yellow froth from the living room rug to the back door.

Blap Disease: Dog exercises hard and a) eats large mouthfuls of snow (winter blap disease) or b) drinks abucket of water (summer blap disease). Within two minutes of returning inside, the dog spews out largeamounts of clear, slimy liquid, making a distinctive "blap" sound and sharp percussive noise as it hits thelinoleum.

Garks: Dog suddenly clears his throat with loud and dramatic "gggark, gggark" noises, followed by aprolonges "iiksss" and then loud, satisfied smacking noises. There is nothing on the rug.Don't investigate, you don't want to know.

Ralfs: The dog strolls into the dining room and waits 'til the innocent dinner guests are all watching him. Then, with a single deep gut-wrenching "raaaallff", disgorges the entire week's contents of his stomach on the rug.Variation: He eats it.

In all of the above events, the dog is entirely healthy and, indeed, deeply pleased with himself.

Our winter Obedience/Rally trials and our first ever AKC Scentwork trial were both successes.Kudos to all who helped out.Next month I hope to have some photos of both events to share.

The next activity for many of our club members is the HumDog Expo at Redwood Acres, Eurekaon Sunday March 4th. Even if you are not exhibiting your breed, you can still come and help out,or just enjoy the day. A wonderful opportunity to participate in promoting responsible pet ownership.

The judging panels for our summer Conformation/Obedience/Rally shows are now up on theAKC site and InfoDog.

From CathyWright:

Well... we did it! First ever LCKC Scent Work Trial is behind us.

Deb St. Myers said, "We have a fabulous group of people surrounding us in our Clubventures. This was truly an event that if we had not had our Non-Running Dog Workers,we would not have been able to offer this trial. I hope you all know it takes a village, andI'm so pleased to be surrounded by this village... Sincerely and truly thankful to you all."

The trial weekend was a big success. There were a few wrinkles which were learningmoments, but over all I think we did it! I'm almost certain that financially we are very much in the black.

We had a full entry, the weather was about perfect, nice judges, wonderful Trial Secretary,Debi Best (who was learning the ropes along with us), good location, and nice participants.

The searches were fun and the hides sometimes challenging. Lots of qualifying scores andplenty of new titles.

So many thanks need to go out, and we hope that nobody is left out! (Please forgive us if we do)

First, tremendous Kudos to Deb St. Myers, without whom we wouldn't have had a SW trial,at least not in the near future. Deb gave advice, suggestions, and gentle prods for seeminglycountless details. She's been a tireless leader.

The event team of Deb, Jill, and Cathy were in constant communication trying to help eachother figure out all aspects of this event which is brand new to AKC.

The hospitality and lunch were wonderful, thanks Debbie T... Just right!

Raffle table was very pretty with Valentines theme, thanks to Marilyn and helped byDebbi S and Esther. I think the raffle and merchandise brought in a pretty good amountto help fund continued SW Trials.

Thanks for help at Sniff N Go and Set Up Deb, Pat, Cheryle, Debbi, Linda, Suzi, Debbie T,Sara, Jill, Sandra, and new member, Rachel.

The actual trial days are just a blur... We especially appreciate you who didn't have dogsentered and just worked your butts off all day - Roxy, Cheryle, Janet, Suzi, Linda, and Bruce,Sandra's brother.

And to all you guys who entered and worked - buzzing here and there in almost constant motion -checking in, answering questions, emptying trash, helping with running order, selling stuff, score sheets, filling in wherever needed - Mette, Marilyn, Jill, Cathy, Sara, Debbi, Pat, Sandra, and of course, Deb.

To those who stayed through to the bitter end of cleaning upmore giant thanks, and you know who you are.On behalf of the Scent Work Event Committee, Thank You !

Have you heard?

From Kris and Bayard Smith:

The Smith Deerhounds went to the first race meet of the year in Redding on February 10 and 11.Opal pulled out a win for both LGRA on Saturday, and NOTRA on Sunday, although there is ayoungster running now who is pushing hard, and even won one oval race.It was a bittersweet weekend for us, as Tillie officially retired herself, after 10 years of coursingand racing. We have been entering her in the straight racing, and just letting her run the firstprogram. She is thrilled to participate, but is willing to sit out the second and third. This time, she was enthusiastic as usual, but didn't get to the finish line. Her hearing, vision, cognition, and strength are fading, and as a result, she lost the lure, got confused, couldn't heareither Bayard at the start or me at the finish, and had to be "rescued" by someone else. She's had a good run.

Here is Tillie from her running days.

From Jill Otto:

At his first AKC Scent work trial, Scotch earned 2qualifying legs in Interior, 2 legs in Buried, 1 leg inContainers, and3 legs in Exterior, which earned him a title (SEN)in Exterior.Very proud of this boy.

Tippet went to SDS nosework trial inPetaluma Feb 17.We we're at the stunning Flying Horse Ranch.Wow! What a venue!

He did a beautiful job on all three searches. His container search for three hides was fastand solid. His buried search for two hideswas quickly done. His area search was last, a nice courtyard. At the start, I ran him all the wayto the far end of the area so he would be downwind. He was blazing fast to the two hides.

Nicely done, Tippet!
