ARTHUR JAMES

AND THE LOST GOLD

If you take a walk with your dog, during the afternoons, down

the 5th Elmwood Street in Zurich, Switzerland you would see a

tangerine colored cat purring in front of a scarlet wooden door

waiting to be fed. You would also see someone in a long archaic

leather brown blazer and a hat who would pour some of the cat

food into a bowl.

If so, then you definitely saw Arthur James, the neighborhoodstrusted detective. He was very genial and though he is a huffy

person, and wouldnt work for finding lost small or useless

things, he would always work for finding lost kittens, because

he knew what is like if your kitten was lost.

He had a small house with green and white striped background.

There were fresh forget me not flowers growing near his front

door. He had Dark brown simple furniture, which scented like if

some fresh honeysuckles were inside them.

He wasnt an obscure person, because all the neighbor knew

him and his magnificent detective skills.

As a matter of fact, people would come to him every time, every

day, every year even from far towns and citiesjust to report

their cases for him to solve. He was a prodigy for detective stuff,

and would solve cases with prudence. He would be content to

do this, but one time a farmer came and reported that he lost

his tractor keys. It took a whilst to find those keys and after

what seemed liked days, they found out the farmer carried it all

along in his old overalls, and this made Arthur very cross, but he

never expressed his feelings to old people.

There was a small poster on the door of his house which said,

ARTHUR JAMES, WORKING HOURS 3PM TO 6PM (EXCEPT FOR

FRIDAYS AND MONDAYS) in bold red letters. Everyone would

read it, but one never asked Why not the weekends? Why

Fridays and Mondays? The reason behind this was, because onthese days Arthur James would relax in a boat at the lake side

and start fishing which was his avocation.

Next to Arthurs house you could see from his bedroom

window, lived Mr. Harry Wilson who was Arthur James best

friend and a very amiable and altruistic person. He had a huge

oak tree near his house from which a small swing was hanging,

and he would be delighted if the neighbor children came to play

in his backyard. Though he doesntknow anything about

detective stuff, but always comes in handy in some ways.

Every Thursdayshe and Arthur James would take a walk down

the flea market to find something useful or something at a low

price.

One sunny Thursday Arthur invited Harry over for lunch. Arthur

liked to eat in silence, but Harry didnt. He had to be silent

today, and they only spoke, Pass me the salador that gravy

bowl. After the lunch, it was not late when, Harry said Would

you like to use your time to come with me to the flea market?Maybe we could come around something useful?

Okay but we ought to come early, I have to proofread my

report said Arthurwhilst he took a gleaming pen out of his

pocket.

No problem, we would come by time replied Harry in a veryhumorless way. They went to the flea market just after a cup of

coffee.

Came here to get yourself a new jacket? said Arthurwhilst he

yawned a little.

Wellas you know I have no leather jackets, so it would besatisfactory to buy one Harry Wilson repliedswiftly.

They were searching for the shop which sold leather jackets,

and not cotton ones, because cotton ones are always crummy.

Suddenly Harrys eye caught something. Hesaw someone

selling raffle tickets on a small wooden stand.

HUNDRED SWISS FRANCS FOR 1 RAFFLE TICKET shouted the

man, with an absurd t-shirt and ripped jeans, who sold the

tickets, so loud that it pierced through Arthurs ears.

Who would buy a ticket for a whole hundred Swiss Francs?

said Harry Wilson.

Let me guess, them! replied Arthur James laughing and

pointing to a long line of people waiting to buy the tickets.

Harry hummed a little and went into his thoughts. After a very

long wait in the line quite long-, Arthur James and Harry

Wilson found themselves in front of the raffle stand.

I will give whatsoever I have in my pocket just to buy a raffle,

because I ought to win said Harry, Would you like a raffle

Arthur?

No, Im not interested in lotteries or raffles replied Arthur

James in a serious manner.

Okay thenone ticket please said Harryrapidly, What if you

give it for ninety five Swiss Francs?

Im sorry, but the price is fixed said the guyin a dull voice.

Dont haggle Harry, as he said the price is fixed said Arthur.

Dont forget to watch channel nine at ten o clock tonight,

because they will tell you the winner the raffle guy said in his

Indian accent.

They came back fagged and Harry forgotten about the leather

jacket they were going to buy. Forgot your leather jacketeh?

Said Arthur.

Ohthe jacket I forgot, I think I was too busy waiting to get a

raffle said Harry.

Well, you did, but I didnt said Arthur as he took a warm

leather jacket out of a large paper bag.

Thats great thanks Arthur! said Harry.

The scene shifted, and Harry was sitting with exhilaration in his

bedroom, in his red Santa Claus pajamas with a teddy bear in

his hand. His eyes glued to the television screen, watching

channel nine. He waited from eight o clock, until on ten, when

the show started. Good evening everyone, hope all of you are

waiting for us to tell reveal the lucky winner.

Here we gothe lucky winner is with the number said the guy

in the show with excitement. He took out a papers on which

numbers were written. TwoEightFiveThreeand the last

he said briskly. Then he showed a small paper with numberfour.

YahooI won! I won! cried Harry and he jumped on his bed,

and screaming so loud that the whole neighborhood would

wake up.

The next morning, when Arthur James was in his kitchen trying

to cook some chicken though he had terrible culinary skills,

because all the restaurants were closed today. Mr. Harry

dashed in saying I won! I won!with jubilation.

What did you win, Harry? replied Arthur in amazement.

Ten gold biscuits! he shouted.

Shhhwe dont want anyone to hear about this replied Arthur

in a hushed voice, but where are the biscuits?

John Wood said that hell go and take those biscuits todayand

give them to meandI have something to tell you, I have to

leave this town for a couple of days, and I guess I will be back

on 25th

January, and that let me know if anything happens, I will

perhaps leave this afternoon.

Well, have a good tripand keep those gold biscuits with

diligence replied Arthur.

Ohmy chicken! he shouted, and ran to the stove on which a

small chicken was burning black.

That is somefoul thanks giving turkey said Harry.

Its chickenchicken snapped Arthur trying to tell Harry the

difference between a chicken and a turkey.

Whatever said Harryin a lukewarm way, I have my ten gold

biscuits to get said Harry and darted away.

It was raining hard that night, probably a predicted rainstorm.

Arthur James wasengrossed in working on a plan to capture

the guy who robbed the bank and stole a lot of gold last week.

The rain made the house snappy, and that it was one of the cold

evenings January.

When Arthur went to his wardrobe to get a sweatshirt to wear,

he saw someone coming out of Harrys house wearing a long

black raincoat and had a suit case in his hand, from the

window. Perhaps its Harry Wilson he said to himself, but he

couldnt tell for sure as the street lights were out this night due

to the heavy rain. But didnt he say that he was leaving in the

afternoon? Perhaps the train was delayed or something.

Suddenly there came a knock on his door, which was hard to

hear because of the sound of the heavy rain drops hitting the

window. Whoever is there, please come tomorrow, sorry but I

dont work after 6 said Arthur James from within the room.

IdiotpeopleCant they read the poster on the door? he

asked himself.

Then there came another knock. He went there and saw that it

was the mailman holding an umbrella and keeping a hat under

his arms and smiling a bit.

Well hello there Mr. JamesHere is your mail said the

mailman with his clothes all wet.

Thank you I really appreciate of you coming during this heavy

rainstormWould you like some tea? asked Arthur.

No thank youI have to leave now said the main man and

left. Arthur was so fagged that he couldnt do anything but to

sleep, in despite of the plan he was going to make to capture

the thief.

On the morning of 25th

January, the day when Harry was going

to come back. Mr. John Wood came to meet Arthur. John was

Harrys friend, but they usually never talked to each other.

SoArthur James, what do you have for me today? said John

whilst he scratched the right side of his head.

Wellyour lost fountain pen was found under your beds

pillow, and your car keys found on top of your fridge Arthur

said in a boring manner, because he was very bored this

morning.

Well, Well, excellent he said. May I have a cup of coffee?John said. Well sure replied ArthurWhy not?

When John was going to start his conversation, a knock on the

door stopped him.

Well, hello there Harry.

Hello Arthur said Harry.

How are you doing? You are looking a bit disconcerted, why is

that?Arthur asked.

When I came this morning, and when I checked my safe, there

was nothing said Harry.

Oh no replied Arthur James and stood up straight.

Perhaps I may go nowthank you Arthur said John and went

as if he had to do something with this. Arthur and Harry sat on

the sofa,

I knew you were being overwroughtby the way, where were

your safes keys? said Arthurconcerned.

Under my bed.

Well that was a good place to keep safe keys he said in a

sarcastic manner, so sarcastic that even Harry kept silent for

some time.

But I dont get it, who could ever find out? said Harry slowly,

later after a minute.

So did you leave the house at night, and with a black

suitcase? said Arthur.

Well, no I left the house in the afternoon,as I told you, and

wasnt holding any suitcase, and rather a brown small bag.

I think I saw someone out of your house on that day, and with

a suitcase, in the middle of the night during the rainstorm said

Arthur.

So what are we waiting for, lets go there replied Harry

briskly.

They reached there and saw that same black suit case near the

tree next to Harrys housewhich was half opened. My gold!My gold! Harry cried.

The criminal left his credentials right on the place where the

crime took place lets not open it here said Arthur. They both

went to Arthurs house.

Open itOpen it cried Harry as if he was going to have hisgold.

There is no gold inside, Mr. Harry! Arthur said. Harry sighed,

and sat on the sofa. But I guess I found something about him

said Arthur.

This person has initials of J.W, the crime took place at two fifty

six in the night, and this person stayed at Louis Luxury Suites for

5 days from fifteenth January to twentieth January. He has a

dog in his house too and that he likes to eat chocolate. He stole

the gold not because he had a shortage of money, but for some

other reason said Arthur.

But how do you knowabout this information? replied Harry.

You see, at the back of this golden watch, it is written J.W and

that must be his initials. The crime took place at two fifty six,

because the front glass of the watch is broken and so the time is

stuck on two fifty six. We can assume that its A.M. because I

saw that person in the middle of the night. There is a

reservation ticket in this bag which says that he stayed in the

hotel for 5 days and the last, there are dog bites on this

suitcase. Finally, he didnt steal the gold, because he was poor,

because the manufacture of this brown suitcase and this lovely

silver pen, which I found, is Zurichexpenses and we all know

how expensive this is, and that he stayed at Louis Luxury Suites,

and thats an expensive hotel, too.

How do you know that he likes chocolate said Harry.

Because it is chocolate, no one loathes it Arthur Replied.

Why would someone steal my gold and not be poorI am so

confused.

I dont know, but I think we should first check at Louis Luxury

Suites said Arthur.

They took a cab, and reached Louis Luxury Suites in no time.

Excuse me sir, can I have a look at your hotels register? said

Arthur. He searched every page and then he was left with 6

names starting with a J and ending with a W. All of these name

reserved their hotel last week said Arthur.

Now well never find him replied Harrygloomily.

With a melancholy expression on their faces they went to a caf

and ordered an extra chocolate with whipped creamed toping

coffee and seven freshly baked raspberry cinnamon rolls.

But wait the golden watch! Arthur said.

What are you going to do with the old silly watch? Which is

even broken.

No you dont understand, we can go to the person who made

this watch and ask him instead! Its written Jacob Watches at

the corner of this watch said Arthur.

Ok, what are we waiting for? Lets go then replied Harry, and

they left the cafe and their seven cinnamon rolls. The waiter

came and took them back at the kitchen and gave it to another

customer. Its like ten Swiss francsfor free! he said. Arthur

and Harry had other things to do than to save their ten Swiss

francs and they took another cab and went straight to Jacob

Watches.

They were at the counter of the shop when they noticed there

was no one at all. There was board on the wall, BREAKING

DOWNCONSRTUCTION IN PROGRESS. Excuse me, but is this

Jacob Watches? Arthur asked.

Well, it certainly isbut Im afraid they are going to break this

building down so we are having a clearance sale. So what are

you looking for, Swiss, American?

We are not here to buy something said Harry.

Wejust wanted to know the name of this person to whom you

sold this watch said Arthur.

I dont rememberwait I have a registerplease read me the

number written on the watch said the guy.

Zero, one, triple three said Harry.

The guy was muttering some names and then he said Sorry,

but Im not allowed to tell you the name of the owner of thiswatch.

Okay then said Harry and placed 10 Swiss Francs on his

counter.

another 20 Swiss Francs on the counter. OhI see you are

The guy quickly took the money and placed in his pocket in case

someone sees him. The guys name isJohn and I swear I dont

anything about him, but I know that he said that he will leave

this country on first of February to go to Australia and he likes

chocolate said the guy.

But how do you know he likes chocolate? asked Harry.

Because it is chocolate, no one can hate it he replied. Both

Harry and Arthur looked at each other and laughed.

No seriously no one hates chocolate said the guy.

After another cab to Arthurs house, they werefagged and were

starving. Who could it beJohn. We procured what we could

said Arthur whilst scratching his short curly hair.

If only we could know someone named wait John! John

Wood! said Harrybriskly.

Well I guess you could be a bit right Harry.

A bit? No, a hundred percent right Arthur.

Hmmbut why would John steal your money, hes not a

artifice as from what I knowthere are hundreds of people

would he stay in Louis suites when he has a house of his own?

said Arthur.

I dont know, but it wouldnt hurt anyone if we ask him

replied Harry.

Harryas from my twenty five years of detective experience, I

learned that no criminal says that he is the criminal unless or

until you give him some chocolate! Arthur Replied.

Why chocolate? asked Harry. Because it is chocolate, no one

can hate it and hence the criminal confesses that he is the

criminalArthur replied.

After a long time, when their hunger was gone and they were

ready to do some detective stuff, they both went to Johns

house. Well, Well, Well, whos hereMr. Wilson and Mr. James

said John.

Harry and I have a few questions for you said Arthur.

Okay come in.

Well as you know Harry lost his ten gold biscuits, so I thought

you would know anything about it.

Well noI dont, as a matter of fact I have made these

chocolate biscuits for you guys, dont worry have some

chocolate biscuits instead of gold ones said John and guffawed

so hard that he almost blew up. They had some tea and later on

were served with mash potatoes and macaroni. OkayI think

we must go said Harry.

Go now? This early? John said. YesI have some business to

finish said Arthur.

On their way toArthurs house Harry saidI think its him, he

stole my gold.

Well I guess so, but wasnt he the one who brought the gold

for you because you were busy in your packing, on twentieth

January?

I dont knowIm so confounded.

Me too, but I think we should wait till first February, and waitat the airport in case we catch him going away said Arthur.

On the first of February, early in the morning, Harry and Arthur

found themselves at Zurich Airport waiting for the bird to be

caught. They waited and waited, and Harry also took a small

nap, but then after what seemed like ages, someone in long

black coat came by the entrance and resembled like John Wood

because he was also very plumwith a suitcase. Look Arthur,

there said Harry. Harry and Arthur ran to him, but he wasnt

John Wood.

John! Harry cried.

It wasnt John wood, nor anyone I can remember thought

Arthur.

Johnmy younger brother! Harry cried again. It was John

Wilson, Harry Wilsons brother.

How could you brother cried Harry.

I have nothing that is yours said John Wilson. Harry took his

suit case.

There is no gold in it said Harry.

Gold? What are you talking about? said John Wilson.

I know you stole the gold, where is it? Harry shouted, and left

John confounded.

Hey look there said Arthur.

It wasnt Andrew Paul who was Harrys relative-, nor anyone I

can rememberthought Harry. It was John Wood running to get

to the airplane as fast as possible. Arthur, John and Harry ran

towards him trying to stop him. Unfortunately, they were late

because at the time they reached the airplane, he had gone

inside, and they didnt had any boarding passes, and so they

couldnt get to him.

We lost, there is no way to get to him this fast as before he

lands to Australia said Harry. Im sorry my brother, how could

I blame you for this, and havent thought that you were my

brotherand placed his hand on his right shoulder.

No problem, you are my elder brother, its not a big issue if you

thought that I stole the gold, that is how elder brothers are

said John.

Such a heart-touching moment said Arthur and took out his

cyan handkerchief and dabbed his eyes.

John Wood such a diabolic and duplicitousperson said

Arthur.

Wait, I have an idea, we can buy a private jet and before he

lands, we can get there, and when he gets there we can catch

him at the spot said John. They all dashed to the counter,

which sold private jets for rent. We want one that goes to

Australia as fast as possible said Arthur.

I have three planes, which one would you like? said the guy at

the counter.

One that goes really fast said Harry. Okay, this one is for

twenty thousand nine hundred Swiss Francs.

Any low priced plane? Arthur said.

Yes, there is one for fourteen thousand eight hundred Swiss

Francs.

Okay, but wait I want to decide said Arthur. We cant afford

fourteen thousand eight hundred Swiss Francs, and for only a

small trip to Australia said Arthur.

Oh no we cant replied John.

Waitmy friend, Alexander, he is in the army said John

Wilson, We can tell him to stop John from there and later send

us the gold.

Well, maybe he would run away with the gold? asked Harry.

He wont, hes in the army said John.OhI see replied

Harry.

After two days, they were all waiting at Arthurs houseand

enjoying some freshly baked turkey with mashed potatoes,

when suddenly there came a knock, it was Alex. So what about

the goldDid you get it? asked Harry.

The gold was found,but unfortunately you wont get to keep

it.

But why? Harry said.

Because, that gold was stolen from the bank a couple of days

ago, and I think the guy wanted to blame you for the gold and

so when it was time he would run awayso who gave you the

gold? said Alex.

Mr. John Woodreplied Harry.

Can I have your raffleticket? When Harry gave Alex the raffle,

he said Oh myit says that you won a new car, not

goldPerhaps John Wood or something, stole the gold from the

bank and gave it to you in case the police catches him with the

gold, and when it was time to go back to Australia he would

steal it back.

Yes, I guess thats true said Arthur.Well, all is well because

the end is well said Arthur and all laughed.

Would you like some turkey with mashed potatoes? asked

Harry.

I think I would like some chocolate said Alex.

But why chocolate, why not turkey with mashed potatoes?

asked Harry.

Because it is chocolate, no one can hate itreplied Alex, and

everyone laughed and laughed, until the day faded away.
