The Loyalist College Foundation – 2014-2015

Message from the Chair of the Board of Directors

It is my privilege to report, on behalf of the Board of Directors, another successful year for The Loyalist College Foundation. The fiscal year 2014-15 saw the endowment grow to $9.3 Million at March 31, 2015. Student support remains a key objective of the Foundation, and during the past year, 339 awards, with a total value of $201,511 were presented at Convocation and at Awards Ceremonies held in November and March. Donations from supporters continue to bring growth to the endowed fund. For example, long-time supporter Ben Murphy made a donation of $50,000 to the Carol Bell Murphy Endowment Fund, bringing that endowment to a total of more than $162,000. This fund provides support for students from Atlantic Canada who are studying at Loyalist College. Certainly, a highlight of the year was the recognition of the success of the College’s Capital Campaign, which grew to $6.378 Million by December 11, 2014. The overall Campaign results had topped $6.5 Million by the end of March 2015, thanks to donations from over 700 donors. This is a remarkable achievement and I was pleased to serve as the Co-Chair of the Campaign, along with the Honorary Chair of the Foundation, Wilf Wilkinson. A heartfelt thank you again to our community partners and the many individuals who helped achieve this result to support the students and programs at Loyalist College.

Bernie Ouellet, Chair May 27, 2015

The Year in Review 2014-15

At the Annual Meeting of The Loyalist College Foundation held May 28, 2014, Bernie Ouellet was re-elected as Chair for 2014-15 and Susan Scarborough was re-elected Vice-Chair. Executive Committee Directors for 2014-15 include: Chair Bernie Ouellet, Vice-Chair Susan Scarborough, College Board of Governors Chair Brian Smith, and Director Kristin Crowe. Ex-officio members of the executive include: College President Maureen Piercy, Treasurer Allan Ross (April-December 2014) Treasurer Cathy Rushton (January-March 2015), and Secretary Dianne Spencer. We are privileged to have the following individuals act as Honorary Directors: Wilfrid Wilkinson - Honorary Chair, Kathryn E. Burns, Dorothy Davies-Flindall, Hugh P. O’Neil, Dr. Nick Quickert, Ian Reilly, Ted Rutter, June Surgey, Roli Tipper, Beverley Townsend, Audrey Williams and Dr. Evelyn Williamson. Three hundred and thirty-nine (339) awards were presented through the Foundation endowment during the year, with a total value of $201,511. During the year, $572,834 was added to the Endowment fund balance, bringing the total to $9,308,995. Individual donors and/or supporters are identified in the recognition list in this report on pages nine and 10. The donors listed have made contributions to support students through financial awards or to complete the Sustainable Skills, Technology and Life Sciences Centre or other capital projects. All donations are recognized as support for the Campaign for Loyalist College. Thank you! The annual golf tournament realized net proceeds of $28,650, which were directed to the Campaign for Loyalist College. A complete list of sponsors is found on page seven. Plans are underway for the 2015 tournament on September 18th at Trillium Wood. Thanks to the generosity of supporters, Loyalist College surpassed the $6 Million milestone for the Campaign for Loyalist College, designed to complete and equip the Sustainable Skills, Technology and Life Sciences Centre, and to establish awards and student financial assistance. A celebration event was held on December 11th at the College to recognize the contributions of community partners. The Campaign for Loyalist College, which launched on June 5, 2012, raised $6.378 Million from a wide range of community supporters including students, alumni, faculty and staff, foundations, municipalities, and business and industry partners. The Skills Centre, which opened in 2011, comprises 121,800 square feet – including 50,950 square feet of repurposed ‘green’ space, and an additional 70,850 square feet of new, flexible space for teaching, laboratories, shops, research labs and classrooms. LEED® Silver certification was awarded in 2014. After years of advocacy by area manufacturers and economic development partners, and a successful proposal by the College, the multi-use facility was built with a $16.6 Million investment from the provincial and federal governments. Support from all sectors made it a reality, with funding from the federal Knowledge Infrastructure Program and matching funds from the provincial government.

“I want to thank our Board of Governors for their foresight in identifying this strategic path, over five years ago. There have been so many positives during this initiative – in bringing focus to skilled trades, to the wonderful opportunities that careers in this area offer – and in increasing collaboration with our partners, and awareness of Loyalist’s impact in the Quinte region and beyond. We have increased our program offerings, and enrolment in our skills programs. We have built, with the help of our partners and communities, a Centre which is outstanding and leads the way for our region, helping to build the economy of our communities. We’re so delighted with the results of this phase of the Campaign – with a concentration on skills, life sciences and technology training – but we know that the reality is that we will continue to require funds for equipment and capital needs, as well as for ongoing student financial assistance. The Campaign for Loyalist will continue in the future and we know that we can count on you to continue to advocate on our behalf for your community College. Thank you again.”

- Maureen Piercy, President and CEO, December 11, 2014 “On behalf of the Board of Governors, I would like to say how very pleased we are to have such wonderful support for this Capital Campaign. The $6,378,188 total has allowed us to leverage additional support – for example, donations to the endowment fund for student financial assistance enabled the College to access $804,000 in matching funds, through the provincial government’s Ontario Trust for Student Support program. The total impact of the Campaign then is close to $7.2 Million – over and above the federal and provincial funding of $16.6 Million to build the Skills Centre. This initiative is actually an impressive $23 Million project overall! We commend the marvelous work by our Campaign leadership team, Co-Chairs Wilf Wilkinson and Bernie Ouellet, Past Board Chair Stuart Wright, and everyone who has contributed to this success.”

TREASURER’S REPORT, 2014-15 To the Board of Directors of The Loyalist College Foundation I am pleased to review the financial results of The Loyalist College Foundation for the year ended March 31, 2015. The Endowed Fund has a balance of $9,308,995, an increase of $572,834 or 6.6% on a market value

basis from the prior year’s balance of $8,736,161.

Net Investment income for the year, measured on a accrual basis, was $311,349, down by $43,261 from last year’s level. Commencing with fiscal year 2007/08, accounting requirements included reporting of investment portfolios on a market value basis. On this basis, investment yield for the year would be increased by a $302,976 unrealized capital gain (2014 unrealized capital gain $86,001) resulting in a net investment yield of $614,325.

During the course of the audit of this year’s financial statements, it was determined that the unrealized

gain on US equity investments for the year ended March 31, 2014 was overstated by $84,511. Accordingly, the March 31, 2014 financial statements have been restated.

Fixed income securities and cash held at March 31, 2015 represent 51.4% of the total investment

portfolio, while the balance is invested in Canadian, US and international equities. The overall cash return before fees on the investment portfolio, based on the quarterly average cost, was 4.1% (2.64% when excluding capital gains) for the 2014-15 fiscal year.

Net income from fundraising activities after direct expenses, was $28,650 compared to $28,188 in

2013-14.

Scholarships and bursaries provided to students this year from endowed funds amounted to $201,511 compared to $123,494 in 2013-14; the number of awards in 2014-15 was 339, up 54 from the prior year (285); the average amount per student was $594 ($433 in 2013-14).

2014-15 was a rewarding year for the Foundation, with a positive investment yield, and a successful year of fundraising. Important financial assistance to students, which is the essence of the Foundation’s activities, was maintained throughout. In closing, I confirm that the banking and investment activities of the Foundation were in compliance with legislative requirements in force during the year. Respectfully submitted,

Cathy Rushton, Treasurer May 2015
