Notes for Roger de Leonne Sir Roger de Leonne, Knight, was born about 1040 in France. He was the son of a follower of William theConquerer who spelled the name LEUOINE.

Roger de Leonne went to England in about the year 1066 and went to Scotland in 1091. He "joined himselfunto" King Edgar, the son of Malcolm Canmore, in 1091. He received lands in Perthshire called called "GlenLyon."

Roger assisted Edgar, son of Malcom II, to regain theScottish Throne by defeating Donald Bane, Edgar's uncle, for which service Edgar granted Roger title to lands inPerthshire, later known as Glen Lyon...

Ingleram de Lyon (Lions) aka Ithleram Louvein (1)*...

There is a Lyon Family tradition which suggests that Ingleram's sister was "The Fair Maid o f Brabant", Adelicia,Queen of England, second wife of Henry I "Beauclerc", King of England.Source: The Internet, web site, (http://www.bodlak.net/html/genealogy.html)***Although Sir Iain Moncreiffe of that Ilk, perhaps the greatest Scottish herald and geneologist of this century,believed that this family were of Celtic origin and descended from a younger son of the Lamonts, the generallyaccepted view is that they descend from a French family called de Leon, who came north with Edgar, son ofMalcolm II, at the end of the eleventh century to fight against his uncle, Donald Bane, the usurper of the throne.Edgar was triumphant, and de Leon received lands in Perthshire which were later called Glen Lyon.

Roger de Leonne witnessed a charter of Edgar to the Abbey at Dunfermline in 1105. In 1372 Robert II granted to SirJohn Lyon, called th e White Lyon because of his fair complexion, the thanage of Glamis. Five years later he becameChamberlain of Scotland, and his prominence was such that he was considered fit to marry the king’s daughter,Princess Jean, who brought with her not only illustrious lineage, but also the lands of Tannadice on the Riv er Esk.He was later also granted the barony of Kinghorne. He was killed during a quarrel with Sir James Lindsay ofCrawford near Menmuir in Angus. The family have descended in a direct line from the White Lion and PrincessJean to the present day, and their crest alludes to this. His only son, another John, was his successor, and hestrengthened the royal ties by marrying a granddaughter of Robert II. Sir John’s son, Patrick, was created LordGlamis in 1445 and thereafter became a Privy Councillor and Master of the Royal Household. He had earlierdiscovered that bein g a courtier was not always an easy life, when he was one of those sent to England as a hostagein 1424 for the ransom of James I. John, the sixth Lord Glamis, was, according to tradition, a quarrelsome man witha quick temper. He married Janet Douglas, granddaughter of the famous Archibald ‘Bell the Cat’, and in the yearsfollowing his death she suffered terribly for the hatred which James V bore to all o f her name. Lady Glamis wasaccused on trumped-up charges of witchcraft and, despite speaking boldly in her own defence, her doom waspreordained. She was burned at the stake on the castle hill at Edinbur gh on 3 December 1540. Her death was muchlamented, as she was ‘in the prime of her years, of a singular beauty, and suffering all, though a woman, with a man-like courage, all men conceiving that it was not this but the hatred which the King carried to her brothers’. Heryoung son was also found guilty of conspiracy and sentenced to death, the sentence to be carried out when he hadcome of age. He was fortunate that he did not do so until after the king’s death, when he was released. The king tookpossession of Glamis and plundered it.

The eighth Lord Glamis renounced his allegiance to Mary, Queen of Scots and served under the Regents Moray andLennox. He was made Chancellor of Scotland and Keeper of the Great Seal for life, and his son, the nin th Lord, wascaptain of the Royal Guard and one of James VI’s Privy Councillo rs. In 1606 he was created Earl of Kinghorne,Viscount Lyon and Baron Glamis. His son, the second Earl, was a close personal friend of the Marquess ofMontrose and was with him when he subscribed to the National Covenant in 1638. He accompanied Montrose onhis early campaigns in defence of the Covenant, but despite his great affection for the Marquess, he could notsupport him when he broke with the Scots Parliament to fight for Charles I. In 1677 the third Earl of Kinghorne obtained a new patent of nobility, being styled thereafter Earl of Strathmore andKinghorne Viscount Lyon, Baron Glamis, Tannadyce, Sidlaw and Strathdichtie. He paid off the debts he inheritedfrom his father by skilful management of the estates and was later able to alter and enlarge the Castle of Glamis.John, his son, although a member of the Privy Council, opposed the Treaty of Union of 1707. His son was a Jacobitewho fought in the rising of 1715 at the Battle of Sheriffmuir in Tulli-bardine’s regiment. He died defending hisregiment’s colours. In 1716 James, the ‘Old Pretender’, son of James VII, was entertained at Glamis. Thirty yearslater another king’s son, but a much less welcome one, the Duke of Cumberland, stopped at the castle on his marchnorth to Culloden. It is said that after he left the bed which he had used was dismantled.

Among the Jacobite relics now preserved at Glamis are a sword and watch belonging to James VIII, the ‘OldPretender’, and an intriguing tartan coat worn by him. The youngest daughter of the fourteenth Earl of Strathmoreand Kinghorne was the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

William Lyon, perhaps an orphan, is said to have been placed in care of Isaac Heath. There appears to be no reason to questionthe conclusion reached by Albert Welles in "American Family Antiquity" that this was the William Lyon who, was baptized atHeston, now part of the city of London, 12/23/1620, the youngest son of William and Anne (Carter) Lyon of Heston. In Roxbury, Mass. land records, the name William Lyon appears as Lion, Lyon and Lyons, and we find all three forms also in therecords of the Eliot Church. He seems to have written it himself sometimes LION. William Lyon married 6/17/1646 (Roxbury Church records) to Sarah Ruggles, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Curtis) Ruggles ofNazing, England. She was born 4/19/1629 and came to America with her parents. The death of Sarah is not found in Roxburytown or church records and probably occurred in Rowley for 11/20/1677, William Lyon of Rowley married a Mrs. MarthaPhilbrick Casse (Cass), widow of John Casse. William Lyon, in 1645, became a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Roxbury. He received in 1648 agrant of six acres of land in Roxbury, and in 1652 of another three acres "upon the common, by John Polly's." His name alsoappears as a grantee in deeds of land in Roxbury in 1651, 1658 and 1661, and as grantor in 1658 and 1672. When the newsettlement at New Roxbury, now Woodstock, VT, was determined upon in 1651, he was one of the "goers," and he was assigned alot there, although he did not actually occupy it. Several of his grandsons (William, Thomas, John and Jacob) were prominentmembers, however, of the new colony, and a stepson, Ebenezer Cass, received a grant of land there.

The "Nazing Christians" were distinguished for their devoted piety. ..... The Lyon homestead in Roxbury was on what is now Bellevue Avenue, formerly called Lyon Street. It was on the east side ofthe street, sothwest of Atwood Street. William Lyon was admitted to full communion in John Eliot's Church in 1655 and became afreeman in 1666. He, with John Bowles, et al, signed Roxbury petition 10/25/1664 to the General Court, praying it to "stand fastin our present libertys." He lived to age of 72 years. He was buried 5/21/1692, probably in West Roxbury cemetery, althoughthere is no stone there to mark the spot. His widow died a out 8/4.1694 (Roxbury town records). Notes Joseph Lucius Cincinnatus Pitt Lyon was the first Lyon of this branch to go to Louisiana. While the rest of his family went toDekalb, Illinois (see notes on Asahel III), Lucius chose to join his cousin, George Newell, in a move to Louisiana in 1849,apparently with the aid and support of George's brother, Henry (born 1828, died 1866). George had married a girl named Emily Davis Semple of Terrebonne Parish in about 1840, and they lived on Semple Plantationwhich was located near Bisland cemetery on Bayou Terrebonne. Henry Newell was quite active in local affairs. Henry and Emily had three children: 1) Mary Bisland (Molly), who marriedRichard Bagley on April 17, 1878 in the Episcopal Church, now known as St. Matthews, in Houma. Mr. Bagley was a schoolmaster at the time in Houma; 2) Laura Squires, who married James T. Sanders of Tennessee; 3) Henry George, who marriedEmma Temple. Records show that Semple Plantation was subdivided about 1900. Henry Newell is believed to be buried inSchriever. George and his family did not stay in Louisiana long, but left the state for California during the Gold Rush. Lucius stayed behind,however, and worked as an overseer on Woodlawn Plantation in Terrebonne Parish for the Cage family. It was there that he methis first wife, Elizabeth Drumwright of Boydton, Virginia, Mecklinburg County. Eliza was a friend of the Cages. Lucius and Eliza settled in upper Little Caillou in Terrebonne Parish, adjacent to the present Catholic Chapel on Little Caillou. On March 21, 1862, Lucius enlisted in the Confederate Army, Company H, 26th Regiment. He was wounded and captured atVicksburg, but survived and returned to Little Caillou. He signed the oath of allegiace to the United States and was released onJuly 14, 1866. Shortly after Eliza's death, Lucius swapped his property on Little Caillou for a larger acreage from a Mr. Duplantis. It was about25 miles down Little Caillou. He placed his baby son, Johnny, with a family named Brown, and Joseph, who was about sevenyears old, with his cousin Molly Newell Bagley and her husband, the school master. Lucius then married Caroline Whipple and had two more sons. When Caroline died in 1874, the boys were placed with friends,but never given for legal adoption. Lucius then married Eliza Michel and had two daughters. Lucius lived 58 years and had 12 children by three wives. He died on October 16, 1894, and is buried at St. Eloi Cemetery inLittle Caillou. At the time of his death, Lucius was living with Joseph and Letitia Lyons. *Note that Lucius and all of his ancestors wer named LYON. The "s" was added to the names of Lucius' children for the firsttime.
