The ‘new year’ in Islam is marked in a way which perhaps no other nation or community marks their own ‘new year’. In fact most, if not all civilizations, take this as a time of happiness and joy in which the people party and celebrate, commit-ting sins most of the time. However in Islam, and particularly the school of the Ahlul Bayt, the new year is one which begins with grief and sorrow and a call to stamp out corruption, evil and sin – not to in-dulge in it! It is a time in which we not only call for the eradication of all forms of outward tyranny by whoever is enacting it over ANY op-pressed individuals, but it is also a time to purge the inner tyranny which our own lower passions and desires pull us towards.

This belief is best seen in the beautiful supplication which the Prophet used to recite when he saw the new moon of Muharram, a portion of which reads: “O’ Allah! You are the Pre-Existing Lord and this is a new year so then in this (new year), I ask you for protection from the Satan and strength against this lower soul which pulls towards evil and that you make me busy with that which makes me closer to You, O’ the Noble … O’ our Lord! Do not divert our hearts after You have guided us and grant us, from Yourself, mercy. Surely You are The Granter.”

The events which put the Ashura movement in motion stemmed from these two factors – the outward Satan – the likes of Muawiya, Yazid and some of their supporters who laid the groundwork for the destruc-tion of Islam, and the inner passions and desires which also affect us today. Without doubt, both of these have always worked in tandem with one another. It is the small instigation and whis-per of Satan which puts the wheels of the inner desires in motion – giving them the lubrication and energy to run on their own.

With the politics and climate of the world changing as fast as they are, this year, it becomes ever important for those who are participating in the Majaalis of Muharram to ensure that the message of Kerbala is not relegated to the year 61 AH. Yes, Imam Husain died in the plains of Kerbala on the 10th of Muharram, however, he ensured that his message was not limited to his time. When he was proceeding forth, he continuously reminded us that his mission was timeless and border-less. He sought to ensure that we too would be ‘Husaini’ in our outlook and efforts and that we would reject any “Yazidi” forces. For this reason perhaps, he gave Muhammad al-Hanafiyyah an important testament which to this day, remains the blueprint for his mission, and should also form the plan of our life. The Imam stated, “Now know that surely the aim of my stand is not inspired by vain exultation, nor is it for the quest of kingdom. It is not to cause dissension, nor to spread corruption. It is also not for the goal to wrong anybody unjustly. Rather, the purpose of my stand is the reformation the Ummah (nation) of my grandfather. I only intend to enjoin good and forbid evil (and in doing so), emulate my grandfa-ther, the Messenger of Allah and my father Ali ibn Abu Talib.”

He further spoke on this Divine movement and once again, generalized his struggle, a hint for us, by saying that, “The one who sees a tyrant leader making unlawful as lawful; violating the pledge (of God); opposing the Sunnah of the Prophet; ruling on the servant of Allah with sins and oppression, and by his words and actions does not oppose the leader and does not strive to reform the state of affairs, then it behooves Allah to hurl him into Hell along with that ‘leader’.”

This Muharram, if anything, we need to keep the movement of Abi Abdillah in mind and heart and make a conscious deci-sion to make a change in our lives and work towards a reformation within our own hearts and beliefs. Islam is in no need for reform – there is no ‘trouble with Islam’ as some ‘enlightened’ people will have us believe. Rather, it is the followers who need to heed the lesson learnt through Kerbala and the victory of truth over falsehood – and apply it to our lives and reform ourselves.

Hussain gave everything he had, including his life, for the greater good and for the benefit of those around him, and his epic legacy continues to inspire millions across the world on a daily basis. Hussain ibn Ali was born in 620 AD to a family famed for their values of equality, love and peace. Raised by his grandfather Muhammad (pbuh), Hussain was known for his integrity, generosity of spirit and blindness to colour and social class. It was for this reason that people flocked to him and his family.

Hussain was a man of great love and compassion Despite cultural expectations of him as a ‘prince’ of his tribe and a prominent figure in the Islamic Empire, Hussain would shun the grandeur of his status in favour of breaking bread with the poor and needy. He broke all cultural moulds, brought people together and helped where he could. A celebrated example was when he and his brother Hassan cared tirelessly for a poor blind man they came upon in their city, in spite of traditional social expectations. Not long after the passing of Muhammad (pbuh), the leadership of the vast Islamic Empire had fallen into the hands of the corrupt. The good values that Muhammad (p) had spent his life instilling into society was slowly eradicated as the new ruler, Yazid, from the Umayyad dynasty was determined to gain complete control. Hussain (as) made a selfless stand for social justice Hussain (a) witnessed the fundamental human rights of his fellow citizens being usurped and the morality from his society being drained under Yazid’s rule. He knew something had to be done. Yazid ruled with an iron fist and demanded Hussain (a) pay him an oath of allegiance, to lend credibility to his rule or be killed. It was here Hussain faced his dilemma… Should he give his oath of allegiance to a tyrant – and stand aside as the people around him were being oppressed? Or should he make a stand and risk great personal loss? The timeless words of his grandfather Muhammad (p) echoed in his heart, and Hussain (a) knew what he had to do: “The greatest stand is to speak the word of truth in the face of a tyrant.” Hussain (as) made the ultimate sacrifice Hussain (a) choose to take a stand against Yazid and was forced to leave his home city under the threat of assassination by Yazid’s men. Along with his family and loyal companions, Hussain made his way towards the East in an attempt to avoid any violence. It was on this journey Hussain (as), his family and companions were forced to stop by an army of over 30,000, on the hot plains of a land called Karbala. Hussain (a) choose to take what was the macrocosm of his life and demonstrate it in a single act of extraordinary devotion. In 680 AD, after three days of no water and food in the scorching heat on the deserts of modern day Iraq, Hussain (a) stood and fell valiantly to defend those around him being oppressed and whilst standing for his principles. What’s all the more extraordinary is Hussain (a) choose to stand against this mammoth army despite having only 72 companions with him. Read more of the story here. Hussain’s legacy of compassion and integrity lives on Through this tragic end but heroic act of sacrifice, Hussain (a) inspired millions around the world. His legacy is that despite being killed for what he stood for, ultimately he was victorious as his death became the catalyst for changes and led to the collapse of Yazid’s tyrannic rule. From people who volunteer at their local charities to civil rights leaders like Gandhi, millions of people across the world are inspired by his selflessness, courage and determination. The story of Hussain ibn Ali stands as an inspiration to all, no matter what colour or creed. This is simply not about personal beliefs or social class. It is about our collective humanity, our common causes towards goodness, and the prospect of the beautiful world that’s within our grasp, if each of us were to give back what little we can. The Rally of Imam Hussain (a) will take place on Saturday Oct 24th on the day of Ashura in Calgary to commemorate his sacrifice .The Peace and unity rally will start at 1:15 pm from Shaw millennium

Those who die for (Allah) God live forever; those who fight against God perish forever. Blessed are those who sacrifice their lives for the pleasure of God. Rest assured that you can never succeed in misleading and misguiding me. You are aware of my connection with the Prophet. A son of Ali, the Lion of God, can neither tremble nor retreat. He can never submit to evil forces. He can never be afraid of any enemy however strong and powerful he may be. Remember that the secret of a man's greatness lies in his unshakeable faith in God. He should always be grateful to the Almighty God in whatever circumstances he may be; God's ways are inscrutable. Whatever He does is always the best. I am not in the least displeased with my fate. I am fully conscious of whatever lies in store for me. I can never weep over the loss of this world and try to escape death when it comes to me I will rather welcome Death if it comes to me in the way of Allah. I shall submit to Death cheerfully, joyfully and happily, for Paradise Is a much happier abode than this world. This world is not a place worth living. Fortunate is he who dies for Islam.” Hazrat Abbas (AS) on the day of Ashura.

Every year on the 8th day of the Holy month of Muharram we all gather at the mosque to listen to the tragic heartbreaking events of the martyrdom of Hazrat Abbas (AS). We hear about how he was the defender and protector of Imam Husayn (AS), the women and children of the camp of the Imam. However, have we ever sat back and pondered over what we can learn from this great personality that is Abbas Alamdaar, the standard bearer of the army of Islam, justice, truth and equality.

Hazrat Abbas (AS) was born into the family that was the embodiment of Islam, he was guided and bought up by his father for 14 years, his brother Imam Hassan for a further 10 years and finally by Imam Husayn for another 10 years, making him the chest that held the treasure of the knowledge of the Imams. This spiritual guidance and knowledge given to him made Abu Fadl Abbas (AS) a great scholar in his own right. He was the one that had the knowledge of the gate of the city of knowledge of RasulAllah (SAW).

Abbas (AS) lived a simple life having no attachment or desire for this (world) dunya. He was bought up in the household whose linage was from the man that was sent as a ‘mercy to mankind’. For this reason Hazrat Abbas (AS) was filled with the light of God on Earth in which this world has little importance but instead he based his life in devotion to Allah (SWT) and love for humanity, dedicating his time to helping the poor and needy, just like his father who was known as the ‘father of the orphans’.

However, Hazrat Abbas (AS), is most commonly known for his bravery, courage and loyalty in defending Islam and the Ahlul Bayt (AS) at every opportunity, for it was not only at Karbala where Hazrat Abbas (AS) valour was demonstrated. He also defended his father at battle of Siffin, stood by Imam Hassan (AS) throughout his struggle with Muawiya and was a constant shield for his beloved Imam Husayn (AS). Therefore, just as his father, Imam Ali (AS), had been the loyal protector of our beloved Prophet (SAW), Hazrat Abbas (AS) was the defender of Islam through defending the Imam’s message of Islam.

The bravery and courage of Hazrat Abbas (AS) came about due to his tremendous loyalty and love for Imam Husayn (AS). Loyalty is one of the noblest characteristics of a human. However, it was the loyalty of Hazrat Abbas (AS) demonstrated throughout his whole life which reached its peak at Karbala, where he refused to take a sip of water from the cool Euphrates due to the cries of thirst of the children and the knowledge of the thirst of his beloved master Husayn (AS). It was these acts of self-sacrifice of Hazrat Abbas (AS) which makes him a beacon of light in a world full of selfish desires, where loyalty will be sacrificed for worldly conquests of fame, fortune and status. It was the loyalty of Hazrat Abbas (AS) which prevented his lips from momentarily drinking the cool water of the Euphrates but instead earned him the reward of drinking from the cup of eternal martyrdom. For a human love is an emotion that is one of the strongest emotions a human possess. It can either be used for extreme good or extreme bad. There are two types of love in the world, conditional love is love which is temporary, based on needs, when once fulfilled is no longer existent.

However, unconditional love is not based on needs and is love for the sake of Allah, an eternal love with no boundaries of space and time and will always result in success in this world and the next. A love that will neither be lost or be betrayed, but will be reciprocated with the greatest blessings from Allah (SWT).

This is the love that Abbas (AS) had for Husayn (AS), a love which was unbound from the time that Hazrat Abbas (AS) was born and will last for eternity. A love that was demonstrated along with loyalty on the plains of Karbala, making Hazrat Abbas ‘Baab al-Hawaij’ for the whole of humanity for eternity, so that all of our heart's desires can be fulfilled.

There are many lessons to be learnt from the life of Hazrat Abbas (AS), such as how to shun this world for the devotion to Allah. To love and hate only for the sake of Allah, and that ultimately only with the truth and loyalty to Islam and each other, and the courage and bravery to stand up for the truth, even if it is against ourselves, will we be truly successful in this world and the next, and gain us our eternal place in paradise alongside Hazrat Abbas (AS) and the Ahlul Bayt (AS) Insha'Allah!

Hazrat Abbas (AS) throughout his life was the protector of the Imams and the standard bearer of Islam, he was able to do this through the tremendous qualities of bravery, loyalty, love and courage. It is these qualities that we must implement in our lives, as we too have an awaited Imam (AS) whose army Insha'Allah we will fight behind and who we will have to protect. Insha'Allah with these qualities of the Abbas (AS) we too can become the standard bearers of the army of the awaited saviour of Islam

May Allah give us all the bravery, strength and courage to defend Islam just like the the ‘moon of the Hashemites’, Abu Fadl Abbas (AS), may He always strengthen the love and loyalty for the Ahlul Bayt (AS) in our hearts.

What Non-Muslims Say About Husayn, The Third Successor of Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings be Upon Them Both) Think not of those who are slain in God's way as dead. Nay, they are living, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord. (Holy Qur'an 3:169) Imam Husayn was the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon them both, who was martyred by the evil forces of despotism. This is a collection of short quotations about him from a wide variety of Non-Muslim notables from around the world. Peter J. Chelkowski Peter J. Chelkowski Professor of Middle Eastern Studies, New York University. • "Hussein accepted and set out from Mecca with his family and an entourage of about seventy followers. But on the plain of Kerbela they were caught in an ambush set by the … caliph, Yazid. Though defeat was certain, Hussein refused to pay homage to him. Surrounded by a great enemy force, Hussein and his company existed without water for ten days in the burning desert of Kerbela. Finally Hussein, the adults and some male children of his family and his companions were cut to bits by the arrows and swords of Yazid's army; his women and remaining children were taken as captives to Yazid in Damascus. The renowned historian Abu Reyhan al-Biruni states; "… then fire was set to their camp and the bodies were trampled by the hoofs of the horses; nobody in the history of the human kind has seen such atrocities." [Ta'ziyeh: Ritual and Drama in Iran, New York, 1979, p. 2] Simon Ockley Simon Ockley (1678-1720) Professor of Arabic at the University of Cambridge. • "Then Hussein mounted his horse, and took the Koran and laid it before him, and, coming up to the people, invited them to the performances of their duty: adding, 'O God, thou art my confidence in every trouble, and my hope in all adversity!'… He next reminded them of his excellency, the nobility of his birth, the greatness of his power, and his high descent, and said, 'Consider with yourselves whether or not such a man as I am is not better than you; I who am the son of your prophet's daughter, besides whom there is no other upon the face of the earth. Ali was my father; Jaafar and Hamza, the chief of the martyrs, were both my uncles; and the apostle of God, upon whom be peace, said both of me and my brother, that we were the chief of the youth of paradise. If you will believe me, what I say is true, for by God, I never told a lie in earnest since I had my understanding; for God hates a lie. If you do not believe me, ask the companions of the apostle of God [here he named them], and they will tell you the same. Let me go back to what I have.' They asked, 'What hindered him from being ruled by the rest of his relations.' He answered, 'God forbid that I should set my hand to the resignation of my right after a slavish manner. I have recourse to God from every tyrant that doth not believe in the day of account.'" [The History of the Saracens, London, 1894, pp. 404-5] Reynold Alleyne Nicholson Reynold Alleyne Nicholson (1868-1945) Sir Thomas Adams Professor of Arabic at the University of Cambridge. "Husayn fell, pierced by an arrow, and his brave followers were cut down beside him to the last man. Muhammadan tradition,

which with rare exceptions is uniformly hostile to the Umayyad dynasty, regards Husayn as a martyr and Yazid as his murderer." [A Literary History of the Arabs, Cambridge, 1930, p. 197 ]

Sir William Muir Sir William Muir (1819-1905) Scottish scholar and statesman. Held the post of Foreign Secretary to the Indian government as well as Lieutenant Governor of the Northwestern Provinces. • "The tragedy of Karbala decided not only the fate of the caliphate, but of the Mohammedan kingdoms long after the Caliphate had waned and disappeared." [Annals of the Early Caliphate, London, 1883, pp. 441-2] Edward G. Brown Edward G. Brown Sir Thomas Adams Professor of Arabic and oriental studies at the University of Cambridge. "… a reminder of the blood-stained field of Kerbela, where the grandson of the Apostle of God fell at length, tortured by thirst

and surrounded by the bodies of his murdered kinsmen, has been at anytime since then sufficient to evoke, even in the most lukewarm and heedless, the deepest emotions, the most frantic grief, and an exaltation of spirit before which pain, danger and death shrink to unconsidered trifles." [A Literary History of Persia, London, 1919, p. 227]

Ignaz Goldziher Ignaz Goldziher (1850-1921) Famous Hungarian orientalist scholar. • "Ever since the black day of Karbala, the history of this family … has been a continuous series of sufferings and persecutions. These are narrated in poetry and prose, in a richly cultivated literature of metrologies - a Shi'i specialty - and form the theme of Shi'i gatherings in the first third of the month of Muharram, whose tenth day ('ashura) is kept as the anniversary of the tragedy at Karbala. Scenes of that tragedy are also presented on this day of commemoration in dramatic form (ta'ziya). 'Our feast days are our assemblies of mourning.' So concludes a poem by a prince of Shi'i disposition recalling the many mihan of the Prophet's family. Weeping and lamentation over the evils and persecutions suffered by the 'Alid family, and mourning for its martyrs: these are things from which loyal supporters of the cause cannot cease. 'More touching than the tears of the Shi'is' has even become an Arabic proverb." [Introduction to Islamic Theology and Law, Princeton, 1981, p. 179] Edward Gibbon Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) Considered the greatest British historian of his time. • "In a distant age and climate the tragic scene of the death of Hussein will awaken the sympathy of the coldest reader." [The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, London, 1911, volume 5, pp. 391-2]

Hussaini Association of Calgary warmly welcomed the Beth Tzedec Congregation from 1325 Glenmore Trail SW at Hussainia on Sunday October 11. The congregation from the Jewish synagogue comprising over 40 people was led by their rabbi Shaul Osadchey. Their visit to our Imambargah/Centre was a part of the ongoing interfaith educational program in which Hussaini Association is actively engaged. Upon the arrival of the congregation, the president of the HAC brother Shabbir Rizvi welcomed them and shared a brief history of the Imambargah. After this, our resident Aalim Maulana Syed Hadi Hasan made a PowerPoint presentation in which Maulana explained different types of our religious buildings and sacred sites, what and why we do therein, the distinct features of a mosque and Imambargah, brief history of Karbala and the backgrounds of the monuments we keep in our center. The Azan and Salah with English translation were demonstrated by Afeef Hasan, a Hussaini School student. The session was extremely engaging and generating the tremendous interest among the attendees which reflected in many questions from them. Here are two Q&A as an example: Why do you keep male and female separate in your mosque? It is for the convenience of the both genders. Islam always promotes morality and modesty, however does not prohibit men and women worship Allah (st) together while observing the full Hijab as it is a common practice during Hajj season around the most sacred place in Islam, the Holy Kaba. However, at the centre/mosque/imambargah as men and women come in families, with kids and stay for long periods, the separate sitting arrangement works for both more effectively. Women in their own private gathering are not bound to cover their heads, hide their beauties, jewelry and makeups, also they can more comfortably reach to their breast-feeding babies. Why Women cannot lead the congregational prayers? This is the same ruling in original Jewish and Christian religions too. Women, if qualified, can lead the women’s congregational prayers freely. However they cannot lead men. Probably the wisdom can be traced in the both genders controlling capacity. Men are physically stronger but in controlling themselves are usually weaker. Hence the women standing behind a man can easily focus on their prayers while men if standing behind a woman, might not be able to fully concentrate in their prayers. The presentation was highly appreciated and very well-received by the visiting tour. This journey will embark upon a series of five lectures on Islam by our Aalim Maulana Syed Hadi Hasan at the above mentioned Synagogue in upcoming months. This kind of warm interfaith relationship will definitely lead all the communities toward better understanding of each other and enjoying utmost peaceful co-existence among all religious or even none-religious human societies. This will also provide us a solid platform of minimising the stereotypes and mounting misconceptions about Islam and will allow us to show the world the true face of Islam through sharing the pure teachings and sacrifices of Muhammad and Aali Muhammad (as).

In the Name of Allah, the most Kind the most Merciful Dear Readers, Peace and Mercy of Almighty be on you. After summer break we have just reopened our religious school (Hussaini School). In this column I am briefly sharing with you the structure of our supplementary school for the children. All praises belong to Allah (ST), the Creator and the Nourisher of the Universe. We beseech Him to send His greatest blessings to all the Prophets particularly to Prophet Muhammad (S) and his pure Household (A), the fountain of Allah’s Favours, Guidance and the Source of our inspirations. Interestingly, the Noble Quran commenced with these verses: ‘Read in the name of your Lord who created, He created man from a clot, read and your Lord is most Honorable, Who taught with the pen, taught man what he knew not’ (Quran: 96: 1-5). No doubt, today’s world is fully focused on education and knowledge, however, it seems to be missing “in the Name of your Lord”, and possibly this disconnection is one of the culprits behind the numerous miseries and atrocities of the world despite the tremendous achievements in science and technology. We run our Hussaini School only on Sunday from 10.00 to 15.00 for the children from Grade 1 to Grade 10 educated by 34 volunteering yet dedicated teachers. We have got approximately 140 students of different age groups. For the convenience of the teachers we have divided the teaching sessions into morning and afternoon sections. Usually the teachers only teach in either of these timings, it allows them not be bound with School for the whole day. All the five sessions are delivered in 40 minutes by five different teachers. The 40 minutes give the teacher enough time to recap of the past week’s lesson and present the new lesson in interactive and inclusive fashion by utilizing different types of engaging activities. Five different teachers bring a new life, fresh energy and loads of innovative ideas and valuable experiences in the classroom. Subjects Covered in HS -Holy Quran. From grade 1 to 5 we aim at teaching how to read the Holy Book in Arabic Language. No Muslim is required to speak Arabic, but all are responsible to read and recite at least a few short Quranic Chapters which must be read in Daily 5 Prayers in Arabic Language. Though Holy Quran has been translated in all living languages, but to protect it from any kind of distortion, it is always desired to read in its original or with original language. Children born or raised in the West, struggle to articulate Arabic letters and words. Nevertheless, practice makes perfect. From Grade 5 to 11 we focus on reasoning the meaning and exegesis of Quran. -Aqaid. Beliefs and the tenets of Faith. In this section we focus of 5 main notions, commonly known as ‘the roots of religion’ consisting of Oneness of God, Divine Justice, Prophet hood, Divinely appointed leadership, and the life Hereafter. -Fiqh. This subject covers the practical laws and rules that every Muslim ought to observe in his/her daily life. 10 Furu al-Deen, generally called ‘the branches of religion’ remain the focal areas of this section which include: Salah, Fasting, Hajj, Zakat, Khumus (alms), Striving for the sake of God, enjoining good, forbidding evil etc. -Akhlaq. Islamic ethical and moral system and code of conducts. Generally through all the subjects but especially here we inculcate equality, justice, fairness, diversity, inclusion, integrity, peaceful co-existence etc. among all our learners. -History. History of all the 25 Prophets named in Quran, the history of Islam and its divinely appointed leaders (Infallible 12 Imams AS), the immense sufferings of these leaders and the Shia community on the hands of the tyrants, so called Muslim Caliphs and the areas of interest i.e. the holy places and the shrines for Shia Muslims. -Urdu Language. This subject is optional, but the good news is that most of the students actively participate in Urdu classes. Further Opportunities As most of the teachers are devout volunteers, neither professional teachers, not educated in proper religious seminaries, definitely they need and in fact deserve the required supports in mainly two areas; teaching skills and the content knowledge. For developing the teaching skills we have introduced a short course of a five day workshop of which the first workshop was conducted on Oct 3 at Hussaini Association of Calgary. The workshop was well received and engaging. After the Muharram commemorations we will resume the remaining workshops and will begin the Hawza style courses focusing on the core subjects being taught in Hussaini School. This will inshaAllah improve the content knowledge quality of the teachers in their subject areas. Instructions for the Parents We ask all the parents to appreciate the Hussaini School and its dedicated teachers by: -Making sure that their children attend the school regularly and in time. -they are doing all the homework or research projects assigned by the teachers. -ensuring that the children observe the Islamic ethics all the times and respect their teachers, School, classmates and all the students. Any type of bullying will not be tolerated at HS. -sparing sometimes ideally 40 minutes each week to discuss with them all the topics covered in Hussaini School. Through this practice, the parents will be able to fully monitor the progress of their children, gain some knowledge for themselves and give them the sense of importance of the religious education. Wassalam Syed Hadi Hasan Hussaini School of the Hussaini Association of Calgary
