Real Talk with EdFall FestBarbie Bungee
TheKensingtonWoodsseniorsfirsttackleofEnglish12IntergratedArt,wastoreadtheheroictaleofBeowulf.Beowulfisastoryfilledwithbattlesofseamonsters,devillikefigures,andcrazyoverprotectivemothers.Thestoryisfilledwithentertainmentofbatttles,drunkennights,foreverfriend-ships,andheroicacts.Afterreadingandgettingafirmgrasponthestory,seniorsdoveintotheartportionoftheclass.Thecriteriaoftheprojectwastomakeapiecebasedinthestory,whileconnect-ingittomoderntimes.Theyalsohadtoreferenceanartistintheirwork.Theanswertoalltheirques-tionsareintheartiststatementnexttoeachpiece.Theclasswentineverydirectionfromcomputerdesigntobuildingboats.Thegalleryiscurrentlyinthe7-8room.Whilewalkingaroundthegallery,itisinterestingtoseeallthedifferentwaysthestorycanbeinterpreted.NexttocomefortheseniorsisaphotographyandmixedmediaprojectbasedoffofthestoryCanturbeyTales.StaytunedfortheEnglish12integratedArtnextbigprojects.
BEOWULF
TheBreakfastClubTheprincess,thebrain,thejock,thebasketcase,thecriminal.That’showitallstarts.IfyouhaveseentheBreakfastClub,youknowwhatI’mtalkingabout.Ifyouhaven’t,wellyouneedtostopreadingthis,getoffyourbutt,gotoFamilyVideo,andrentit.Meanwhile,whenyougetback,Iwillbeheretotellyouaboutit.TheBreakfastClubwasreleasedin1984,andbeforeyougetallirritated,letmejusttellyou,itmayjustbethebestmovieyouhaveEVERseeninyourlife.ItwasdirectedbyJohnHughes.HedirectedHomeAlone,theBeethoven’s,andifyou’rereallyinterested,FerrisBueller'sDayOff.(Thisapparently,isanothergreatmovie.)Butenoughaboutthat.Let’stalkBreakfast.ThismovieisagreatmovietowatchwhileyouareinyourcrapyearsofHighSchool.Anddon’tlietoyourself.Everyonehashadthatbaddaywhentheyfeellonely,badaboutthemselves,orfulloutmad.YoucanreallyrelatetoJohnBend-er,orpoormisunderstoodAllison.Butmostofall,youcanrelatetothefeelingthatthismovieputsout.(nottogetallweirdonyouorwhatever)ItisoneofthebestmoviestocreatearealHighSchoolexperience,withoutthecastbreakingoutintosong.Youwillalways,nomatterhowoldyouare,beabletocomebacktoyouroldfriends,Bender.Andrew,Claire,Allison,andpoorgeekyBrian.Sowatchthismovie.Yourlifewillbebetterforit.Andtoimmortalizethemovieslastthreewords, Sincerely, TheBreakfastClub
TheBreakfastClubReview“Saturday,March24,1984.ShermerHighSchool,Shermer,Illinois,60062.DearMr.Vernon,WeacceptthefactthatwehadtosacrificeawholeSatur-dayindetentionforwhateveritwaswedidwrong.Whatwedid*was*wrong.Butwethinkyou'recrazytomakeuswriteanessaytellingyouwhowethinkweare.Whatdoyoucare?Youseeusasyouwanttoseeus-inthesimplestterms,inthemostconvenientdefinitions.Youseeusasabrain,anathlete,abasketcase,aprincessandacriminal.Correct?That'sthewaywesaweachotherat7:00thismorning.Wewerebrainwashed.”TheBreakfastClubisateenclassicdirectedbytheoneandonlyJohnHughes.Althoughitwasreleasedin1984,nearly30yearsago,itstillcap-turestheheartsofpeopleinthisgeneration.Thisfilmfocusesinonthetypi-calstereotypessetforhigh-schoolers.ThestereotypesbecomebrokendownwhenonepersonfromeachsideofthespectrumenterSaturdaydetention.ThesepeopleincludeJohnBender,the“criminal,”ClaireStandish,the“Prin-cess,”andothers.Thethingthatreallystoodouttomewhilewatchingthiswashowthroughthemovieeachstereotypewasdissolvedanddismem-beredbecauseeachofthecharactersfoundouthowtheyarealiketheytrulyare.Iwouldrecommendthistoallagegroupsmainlybecause,despiteitsage,itshowstherealityofteenagelife.Thisismostdefinitelyaclassicthatisworthyourtime.
InFreshmanSeminar,the9thgraderswatchedthemovieBreakfastClubandwrotereviewsonwhattheythoughtofthemovie.Therewasaclasspic-ture,butapparentlythatdidntcomeouttoowell.Imnotputtingnamesonherebecauseilikethefeelofitbeingtheclassasawholethatdidthisprojectandtheyeachcontributedalittletoeachproject.

MyParents:WhileIamaliveIwouldalwaysneedmyparents.TheywillalwayslovemeandIknowthat.TheytrustmeandItrustthem,too.AsIgooninlivethehavetheadviceIneedbe-causetheyhavegonethroughitbefore.Icanexpectthemtotellmethetruth.Theyhaveliedtomebutitwasformyowngood,buttheytellmelaterorIjustfindout.Theyprotectmefromthebadthingsinlife.Theybothhadhard,troubledlivesgrowingup,sotheyknowtheworstoftheworld.Icanalwayscountonthemtohelpmeunderstandthings,learnnewthings,talkaboutthings,andgivemeadvice.Iwillalwayslovemyparentsandtheywillalwaysloveme.
ThemostexcitingthingthathashappenedtomewaswhenmyteamwonGLCCnationalchampions.Allofourstuntshitandnonefell.Ourjumpsweawesomeandourroutinewasperfect!
Ilikereallylikeridingmybikebecauseitisreallyfunandactive.
MostExcitingThingThatHappenedToMe:Winningourhockeychampionshipsforthefifthtimeinarow.Shootingmyfirstdeer.Winningourbaseballchampionships.Catchingafiftypoundhalibut.Catchingsixsharksinonedaywithmydad.
Itrytostaystrongwilledandhappyallthetime.
Igotthegoodsportsmanshipawardinbasketball,Iwasawardedoutoftengirlsfortheawardandmycoacheschoseme.ThisawardwasinthehonorofaplayerwhopassedawayinacarcrashafewyearsagoandIamhonoredtohavegottenthisaward.
OnelessonI'velearnedis,“Dreamasifyou'llliveforever,liveasifyou'lldietomorrow.”

Thethemeofmylifeistonotcareaboutwhatpeoplethinkaboutyou.Theyhavenoinfluenceinwhoyouwanttobe,orwhoyouare.Justbeyourself.You'llbebetterforit.
WhenIwasbornIwasbornwithaheartdefectandhadtostayinthehospitalforabout6months.Mybrotherwantedtotrademeforanotherbaby.

InanotherFreshmanSeminarProject,the7/8gradershadtocomeupwith15reasonswhytheyfeltthattheywereimportant.Theonethatiusedbelowisa25reasonswhy,asthisistheonlyonethaticouldfind.Itriedtochosepicturesthatwentalongwithwhatwassaidinacoupleofthestatements.

AParthasbeenworkingtheirbuttsofftomakeaportfolioof20-25amazingpeicestoturnintocollegesandMrs.Prattattheendoftheyear.Theyhaveworkedallschoolyearandevenallsummertomakealltheirpeicesperfect.APartisfilledwithstudentswhoallusedifferentmediumstomaketheirartandlovewhattheydo.ChristianaEisen-hutsays“AsstressfulasAPartseemstobe,itisreallyalearningexperienceandhelpsourartgrow.”

National Portfolio Day OnOctober27ththeKWoodsartstudentsracedtoDetroittogetcritiquedontheirportfoliosbymanycol-leges.Manyofthesestudentshavebeenworkingontheirportfolioforyears!Andsomeonlyafewmonths.Aportfo-lioisthestrongestpiecesthatthestudentshavecreatedandwishtoshowtocollegesoftheirchoice.Somecol-legesthatthekidstalkedtowereTheCollegeforCreativeStudies,KendallcollegeforArt&Design,andeventheParisCollegeofArtfromParis,France.TheyalsosawpresentationsfromCCS’salumni’sChrisHoughton,ScottLange,VeronikaScott,BridgetSullivan.Theygavelotsofadviceandtoldthemhowtheygotstartedandhowmuchtheyhavegrown.
FallFestisabouttheschoolgettingtogether,havingfun,andgettingtoknoweachotherbetter.Somekidssaythatthisyears’FallFestwasthebestyearyetbecauseofthememoriestheyhavefromit.Itwasanincredibletime,especiallywatchingtheteachersandthestu-dentsplayafootballgameagainsteachother!
WiththeSeniorswinning withthehauntedhouse inthebigroom,itwas stillanamazingweekfor everybodywhopartici- patedinthemakingofthefun!Thespirtdaysincludedthecharacterday,collegeday,crazyday,schoolspirtday,andnauticalday.Itwasalotofhardworkforeveryone,buttheworkpaidoffanditwasaveryspookyweek,walkingthroughthehallwaysofKensingtonWoodsHighSchool,leadinguptoFridaynights’FallFest.Waytogostudents!
AfteragoodsitdownwithEd,IaskedhimaboutaspectsofhislifeinsideandoutsideofKensingtonWoods.Edishap-pilymarriedandthefatherof4children.Hisinterestsincludewatchingfootballandhockey,Edalsocoacheshisson’sbaseballteam.Ed’sfavoriterestaurantisMexicaliAl-ley,andhealwaysordersenchiladaranche-ros.HispreviousjobwasworkingatGMandEdprettymuchdideverythingrangingfromproduction,assembly,manufacturing,andteamleader.Interestinglyenough,hehasneverlivedoutsideofthestateofMichigan,althoughhedoeswanttogoonatriptoNewYorktoseeallthesights.OneofhisfavoriteHighSchoolmemoriesisplaying“DonkeyBasketBall,”andtheconceptbehindthatishalftheteamgetsondonkeysonthebasket-ballcourtandtheotherhalfleadsthedon-keysaroundthecourt.Thisgamewasmostlyplayedbystudentsvs.theteachers.

Thisyearthephotographyclassconsistsoffirstyearstudentsallthewayuptothirdyear.Theyhavebeenworkingaonnumberofprojects.Theirfirstprojectwasaprojectbasedoffwhattheyseeintheirdailylives,thiswasthenturnedintoatriptic.Atripticistakingthreephotosandcreatingoneimage.Thenextprojectwascreatingaforcedprospectivebydealingwithproportion.Studentsthenbeganresearchingtheelementsandprinciplesofdesigntohelpthemcre-atetheirnextproject.Whichtheyusedtheelementsandprinciplestotellastoryinoneimage.Theclassiscurrentlyworkingonaprospectiveprojectofaplace.Theyhavetoshowtheplaceinmultipleprospectivesofdifferentpeople.Staytunedfortheirnextprojects.
